By the time Sam Apple pulled up with his goldendoodle, Steve, to their resting place, he was tired from the long drive and already second-guessing his plan. He felt a little better when they stepped inside the Dogwood Acres Pet Retreat. The lobby, with its elegant tiled entrance, might have passed for the lobby of any small countryside hotel, at least one that strongly favored dog-themed decor. But this illusion was broken when the receptionist reviewed their reservation — which, in addition to their luxury suite, included cuddle time, group play, a nature walk and a “belly rub tuck-in.”Venues like this one, on Kent Island in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, didn't exist when Apple was growing up in the 1980s. If you needed a place to board your dog back then, you went to a kennel, where your dog spent virtually the entire day in a small — and probably not very clean — cage. There were no tuck-ins, no bedtime stories, no dog-bone-shaped swimming pools. There was certainly nothing like today's most upscale canine resorts, where the dogs sleep on queen-size beds and the spa offerings include mud baths and blueberry facials; one pet-hotel franchise on the West Coast will even pick up your dog in a Lamborghini. Apple knew Dogwood Acres wouldn't be quite as luxurious as that, but the accommodations still sounded pretty nice. So he decided to check his dog in, and to tag along for the journey. Join us as we sit down with Sam Apple, the author of the compelling book, "Ravenous: Otto Warburg, the Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet Connection."Our guest, Sam Apple, tells the hidden story of Otto Warburg, a Nobel laureate who in spite of his Jewish heritage, not only survived Hitler's Germany, but uncovered the link between  sugar and cancer. Sugar, Cancer, and the Rise of Cancer RatesWe kick off our conversation with a startling revelation: Germany's financial ruin and desperate quest to compete with sugar-cane-producing European powers drove the mass cultivation of sugar beets for table sugar production. Sam Apple points out how this historic shift in diet and the rampant consumption of sugar may have played a pivotal role in the alarming rise of cancer rates over the past two centuries. Prepare to be astounded by the unexpected connection between sugar, cancer, and world history.Hitler's Sugar Addiction and Ironic PhobiaAs we dig deeper into the narrative, we explore the eccentricities of history's most infamous dictator, Adolf Hitler. The irony of Hitler's profound fear of cancer while he indulged in a sugar-laden lifestyle serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers lurking in our diets.Warburg's Survival and Post-War OstracismOtto Warburg survived Nazi Germany, only to find himself and his work shunned by the post-war cancer research establishment in the United States. This unfortunate political reality led to a nearly 100-year delay in connecting the dots between diet and cancer. Sam Apple's Personal TransformationOur guest, Sam Apple, shares the profound impact Otto Warburg's work had on his own lifestyle choices. He holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from the University of Michigan and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Columbia University. Apple is the author of Ravenous American Parent, and Schlepping Through the Alps. He has published short stories, personal essays, satires, and journalistic features on a wide range of topics. In this episode, Sam talks about the inspiration behind his book Ravenous: Otto Warburg, the Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet. We dive into Otto Warburg's work and how the Nazis protected him for his cancer science. Sam explains how sugar can promote cancer growth and what steps you can take to lower your insulin levels. Plus, Gary Taubes inspired him. Sam was really surprised to learn that that cancer was associated with diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. He wanted to dig further on the connection between cancer and metabolic disease.  [02:10] The Nazis Protected Warburg For His Cancer Research In 1923, Warburg makes this famous discovery called the Warburg Effect. Cancer cells take up a lot more glucose than other cells and burn it without oxygen; they ferment it, just like microorganisms do. Warburg also has made other discoveries about how cells breathe and use oxygen. He wins the Nobel Prize in 1931. In 1933, the Nazis come along. Despite having a Jewish father and being openly gay, the Nazis protected Warburg because they were interested in his cancer research. [06:50] Warburg's Studies Started To Disappear After The War After the war, Warburg's cancer research really starts to disappear. Australia in the 1950s famously discovered the structure of DNA. Eventually, we had a new sort of genetic understanding of cancer where we can now identify specific mutations. So, how cells take up glucose and shift their metabolism was considered irrelevant because of the study of genetics. Warburg's studies take peoeple back to diet, and there's a huge bias against taking diet seriously. [12:20] What Sugar Does To Promote Cancer Growth If cancer is about these metabolic shifts inside of a cell, what is it about the way we eat that affects the way a cell eats? In America, one out of three women are diagnosed with cancer within their lifetime. For men, it's about one in two. Cancer is closely linked to obesity. 13 of the deadliest cancers have been solidly linked to obesity. Sam wanted to know if obesity was causing cancer or if something was driving both. Elevated levels of the hormone insulin are responsible for obesity and give microscopic cancers a chance to grow and thrive. What is it about our diet that causes insulin to rise? Sugar! The increase in sugar consumption maps pretty closely to the rise of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. [19:30] How A Keto Diet That Will Help You Prevent Cancer Sam is a huge believer that keto is a logical way to prevent cancer. The single most important thing you can do to improve your odds for cancer prevention is to keep your insulin levels low. Hyperinsulinemia promotes the growth of cancer. So, it's important to follow a diet that keeps your insulin levels down. [22:20] Intermittent Fasting Is Another Great Way To Lower Insulin Intermittent fasting is one very successful strategy for keeping insulin down. If you can fast consistently, it seems to work quite effectively on lowering insulin. Fasting can lead to weight loss because it lowers insulin levels in the body. Sam wants to point out that thin people can still have insulin resistance. In some ways, being naturally thin can actually be a disadvantage because you can't store subcutaneous fat. [26:30] How To Optimize Insulin and Glucose Levels To Be Proactive Instead of Reactive You can't outrun a bad diet. However, exercise can help you feel better and make you more inspired to follow a low-carb diet. After workouts, you can be inspired to eat healthily and continue to feel good. Once you understand that sugar is linked to cancer, it should help you ditch it during mealtime. [38:30] Finding Therapies To Target Specific Cancer Mutations When cancer can eat lots of glucose, it's no longer thinking about dying; it's thinking about doing a lot more things. Based on which particular mutation you have, the oncologist will devise a treatment. Unfortunately, targeted therapies to specific mutations haven't been as successful as we would have liked. Sam Apple joins us to discuss his fascinating book 'Ravenous: Otto Warburg, the Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet Connection'. We discuss the connection between diet and cancer, and the Warburg Effect, which states that cancer cells thrive on dietary glucose, and why Sam thinks it's not entirely accurate because it ignores the role of insulin resistance. We also discuss Hitler's fascination with cancer research, which allowed Warburg to survive the Nazi era even though he was Jewish and gay, and Hitler's infamous addiction to sugar. We further discuss why this enormously important work has been ignored in modern science, why alternative genetic hypotheses are woefully inadequate, whether modern medicine can be reformed to focus on dietary causes of disease, and, of course, how bitcoin fixes this!References (All links are available on saifedean.com/podcast/150-the-cancer-diet-connection-with-sam-apple)Sam Apple's official website.Buy Sam's book on Amazon, The Book Shop and Norton.Chris PalmerEcontalk with Gary TaubesThe Nazi War on Cancer by Robert N. Otto Warburg was a Nobel-Prize winning German scientist during the era of Hitler and the Nazi's and he was the first person to put the metabolic story of cancer on the map. The famous “Warburg Effect” that shows how cancer cells have an increase in glucose uptake even in the presence of oxygen, is named after him. It was a fascinating conversation talking about how the story of cancer research has evolved - how cancer cells eat to the discovery of oncogenes to coming full circle and making the connection between the two, and what the debate still holds in the story. We also talk about how cancer cells take up a lot of glucose, feed on sugar, and the connection between obesity and cancer. I hope you enjoy the conversation! Sam Apple is the author of the book Ravenous: Otto Warburg, the Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet Connection, published in May 2021. In this episode, Sam describes the fascinating life story of Otto Warburg, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who, despite being both Jewish and gay, survived Nazi Germany because of his valuable research on cellular metabolism and cancer. Sam describes Warburg's observation that cancer cells consume large amounts of glucose anaerobically – a phenomenon subsequently known as the “Warburg Effect” – and relates how Warburg's seminal work on this topic was largely forgotten after the discovery of oncogenes, only to regain relevance decades later within the field of cancer biology. Sam sheds light on the current debate around Warburg's interpretation of the causes of cancer, and Peter gives his personal take on the matter. Finally, Peter and Sam tie it all together with a discussion about cancer prevention, the role of hyperinsulinemia, and the link between dietary sugar and cancer. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Sam Apple. He is on the faculty of the MA in Science Writing and MA in Writing programs at Johns Hopkins. Prior to his arrival at Johns Hopkins, Apple taught creative writing and journalism at the University of Pennsylvania for ten years. In recent years, he has primarily written about science and health. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Wired, The Los Angeles Times, The Financial Times Magazine, ESPN The Magazine, The MIT Technology Review, and McSweeney's, among many other publications. Schlepping Through the Alps was a finalist for the PEN America Award for a first work of nonfiction. Tune in as we chat about fasting, therapies for cancer, and the importance of exercise. However, there are some cases where therapies will successfully target mutations. [42:25] The Best Preventative Measures To Preventing Cancer In The Future Eliminate sugar from your diet. Definitely eliminate liquid sugar from your diet. If you are insulin resistant, you need to reduce those insulin levels. Stop smoking. Cut out refined carbohydrates. Before he arrived at Johns Hopkins, he taught creative writing and journalism at the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from the University of Michigan and an MFA in Creative Non-fiction from Columbia University.  Sam has written many books. His most recent is called Ravenous: Otto Warburg, the Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet Connection. It is about the German biochemist Otto Warburg and his new developments in cancer science. Warburg was a unique individual. He was a Jewish man who managed to keep doing his biochemical research despite living in the extremely challenging time of Nazi Germany. In this episode, Sam talks about Otto Warburg's incredible discovery regarding cancer cells and the research done by Nazi scientists. He also discusses the shift in the focus on cancer research in the post-war period, how insulin drives cancer and metabolic diseases, and how to make better dietary choices. Stay tuned to hear what Sam has to share about his book, Ravenous, and the connections between diet and cancer.  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: What motivated Sam to write about Otto Warburg? Otto Warburg's fascinating discovery about what makes cancer cells unique. Nazi researchers were way ahead of their time in discovering the link between environmental toxins and people developing metabolic diseases and cancer. What happened to much of the advanced research done by German scientists during the war years? What happened in the 1950s that entirely changed the direction of medical research on cancer? The accidental and surprising discovery that was made about the benefits of mustard gas. Insulin drives metabolic disease and causes cancer cells to grow. Why most Americans could develop cancer. Why do you need to get your fasting insulin checked? What does fructose do in the body that differs from what is done by other sugars? Some of the changes that Sam made in his life after researching his book, Ravenous. The cancers that you will be more likely to develop if you eat too often. Modern medicine has dominated the way we treat cancer today. However, there was a time when truly groundbreaking discoveries were being made by a man who was truly not expected to make that type of impact, especially being a Jewish, openly gay man in Nazi Germany. That man was the Nobel laureate Otto Warburg who discovered how cancer cells eat. His story is told by Sam Apple in his new book, Ravenous. Sam shares this historical account along with investigating the dangers of sugar and the link between obesity and cancer.

On today's episode of the LLVLC Show, Jimmy welcomes Sam Apple for an exciting conversation about his new book RAVENOUS. “He found out that all these pathways that are activated in cancer are activated by insulin.” Sam Apple In this interview, Jimmy talks to a science writing professor from Johns Hopkins named Sam Apple who recently released a book about the life and work of Otto Warburg entitled RAVENOUS: Otto Warburg, the Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet Connection. The book is spellbinding and reminds people of the history of Warburg's Nobel Prize-winning ideas surrounding the metabolic connection to the treatment and prevention of the development of cancer. Jimmy and Sam go deep into the topic of sugar, insulin, metabolism, cancer, and more in this engaging interview! https://www.amazon.com/Ravenous-Warburg-Search-Cancer-Diet-Connection-ebook/dp/B08L6Y3W2B/ In Ravenous, Sam Apple reclaims Otto Warburg as a forgotten, morally compromised genius who pursued cancer single-mindedly even as Europe disintegrated around him. While the vast majority of Jewish scientists fled Germany in the anxious years leading up to World War II, Warburg remained in Berlin, working under the watchful eye of the dictatorship. With the Nazis goose-stepping their way across Europe, systematically rounding up and murdering millions of Jews, Warburg awoke each morning in an elegant, antiques-filled home and rode horses with his partner, Jacob Heiss, before delving into his research at the Kaiser Wilhelm Society. Hitler and other Nazi leaders, Apple shows, were deeply troubled by skyrocketing cancer rates across the Western world, viewing cancer as an existential threat akin to Judaism or homosexuality. Ironically, they viewed Warburg as Germany's best chance of survival. Setting Warburg's work against an absorbing history of cancer science, Apple follows him as he arrives at his central belief that cancer is a problem of metabolism. Though Warburg's metabolic approach to cancer was considered groundbreaking, his work was soon eclipsed in the early postwar era, after the discovery of the structure of DNA set off a search for the genetic origins of cancer. Remarkably, Warburg's theory has undergone a resurgence in our own time, as scientists have begun to investigate the dangers of sugar and the link between obesity and cancer, finding that the way we eat can influence how cancer cells take up nutrients and grow. Rooting his revelations in extensive archival research as well as dozens of interviews with today's leading cancer authorities, Apple demonstrates how Warburg's midcentury work may well hold the secret to why cancer became so common in the modern world and how we can reverse the trend. A tale of scientific discovery, personal peril, and the race to end a disastrous disease, Ravenous would be the stuff of the most inventive fiction were it not, in fact, true.

Have you ever read a riveting, page-turner of a book about the metabolic theories of cancer?   Yeah, me neither...until this one, and in the latest episode of the podcast, my co-host, James Connolly, had the chance to chat with Apple.   They dove into Apple's latest book, Ravenous: Otto Warburg, the Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet Connection, and all of the research that was involved in telling this important story of Warburg and his work on cancer.   In the book, Apple tells the extraordinary story of Otto Warburg, a Nazi-era scientist who discovered how cancer cells eat.   He breaks down the current scientific literature in an easy way and interweaves colorful interviews that make this book hard to put down.   By the end, you'll have a better understanding of not just how cancer cells eat, but also what it means for how we should.   Give this episode a listen and check out the book here.

BOOTH ONE - Celebrating Culture and Conversation

Gary and Roscoe are in full Halloween mode as they pay tribute to the holiday with some last-minute costume ideas. Check out Sam Apple's hilarious suggestions for ways to be the talk of the party here. We begin with a heartwarming (yes!) story about a shark in Florida who may have saved Eugene Finney's life. Finally, a friendly shark tale! full story Gary talks about Carly Fiorina's declining poll numbers and wonders how much longer she will remain relevant enough to keep the "Keys to the Carly" segment topical. Roscoe thinks "not much longer." Unless she starts spending her money on something other than very questionable hair styling. see up to date polling numbers here Further developments in the case against former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert and the money laundering case against him. Could it be that his recent guilty plea will provide the means to cover up his alleged child sexual abuse crimes?  Sounds like a betrayal of the public trust to us. Ross reminds us that his sister, who lives near Yorkville, may have a theory about the identity of Individual A.  read more After 46 years, the Chicago Christmas Tree will not be in the Daley Plaza but on a specially built platform in Millennium Park. Maybe not a big deal to some, but a huge deal to born-and-raised Chicago-ans. Roscoe and Gary agree that this could be a marvelous new beginning for a great holiday tradition. Gary gets Roscoe's reaction to reviews of The Humans review  and Therese Raquin review on Broadway. Having seen both and commented on them in a previous episode, we'll find out how the critics' opinions stack up to Roscoe's. Gary reviews Marjorie Prime, the very last production to be held at the famous Books on Vernon bookstore in Glencoe, IL, home to Writer's Theatre.  read more about the play Roscoe has a Booth One experience at local piano bar and cabaret club Davenport's when he went to see the immensely talented Karen Mason read more here. Roscoe shares some stories about Ms. Mason over the years and recounts his encounter with her at Davenports. Gary stuns Roscoe with the news that the never-revived, seldom seen musical Funny Girl is to get a new production at the Savoy Theatre in London's West End.  We're saving our frequent flyer miles!! Gary gives a shout out to to the Therapy Players, a group of psychologists who perform Second City-like improvisation around the Chicago area. We have heard they are hilarious! Will give a full report in an upcoming episode. get more info here   Kiss of Death We briefly pay our respects to one of the last film legends of Hollywood's Gold Age, the strikingly beautiful Ms. Maureen O'Hara. Gary plans to binge watch The Quiet Man, McClintock, and How Green Was My Valley immediately after the podcast. MO MagazineOur featured KOD this week is Marty Ingels - comedian, actor, and celebrity advertising booker.  Friend of the show, Margalit Fox details Marty's outrageous antics were famous in Hollywood, and he was a source of constant consternation and joy to his long-time wife, actress Shirley Jones. Roscoe tells of a personal encounter he had with Mr. Ingels and Ms. Jones at Cinecon some years ago.  June Allyson and "Depends" feature prominently in Mr. Ingels' story.    read full obit
