The Tiger Moms Chat is a series of unfiltered hard-hitting (sometimes) conversations. As Searmi and Vaish wonder what it is to be a tiger mom - they think that being a tiger mom partly means pushing past comfort zones. We discuss a few controversial topics in this episode - including the Telepathy Tapes - both for and against. From Vaish: "The question is not if telepathy is real. It is - is it necessary to sensationalize an already marginalized group?" We discuss if presuming competence is the same as presuming genius and more. Please check out Episode 171 for more on Apraxia.

Join self-proclaimed Tiger Moms Searmi Park and Vaish Sarathy as they discuss: a) Why Searmi has never joined a support group, and b) Why Vaish repeatedly leaves every group she joins. Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is a lighthearted, yet not overly fluffy novel with a reality-TV hook. It's called Big in Sweden, and author Sally Franson really did compete on a TV show in Sweden. Mentioned: Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.Terri's random recommendation is on hiatus for the moment as we return to the DWTS ballroom for two nights of ridiculous wigs and ridiculous scoring. However, we can say that the appropriate stars were shown the door at the end of the second evening. Mentioned: Stephen Nedoroscik's shelter cat. In the archives, we returned our 2018 episode, "Beyond Tiger Moms and Helicopter Parents."Next week's lineup: Lost S1 E15, "Homecoming," on Tuesday, October 15Only Murders in the Building S4 E8, "Lifeboat," on Wednesday, October 16Weekly roundup on Thursday, October 17Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

We discuss a study entitled: The mediating role of Korean immigrant mothers' psychological well-being in the associations between social support and authoritarian parenting style by Seo, Cheah, Özdemir, Hart, Leung, & Sun published in 2018. Many of us are familiar with strict parenting and may know of others who had a "tiger" mom growing up. What if the mother's "tiger mom-ness" was partially due to the mother's psychological well-being? Moreover, what if her psychological well-being was because of the loss of social supports after immigrating to the US? This study looks that the relationship among the mother's social supports, well-being, and authoritarian parenting style. You can find the abstract here: https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2017-51188-001

You've all probably heard of Twitter and Reddit, two popular social media platforms. But what if I told you there was another platform which has more active monthly users than either of those platforms? I'm talking about Pinterest. Pinterest's user demographics make it an especially attractive marketing opportunity for independent ESL tutors who are focused on the young learner market. It's the platform of choice for Tiger Moms. Pinterest user demographics skews toward women (and higher income brackets than average). So today we are going to learn a lot more about “Marketing Your ESL Service on Pinterest”. My guest, Melanie Boyd, helps entrepreneurs design a career and lifestyle, with purpose and passion through Pinterest management and strategy. Her educational background is in Communication Disorders and in E-Learning. She has almost 5 years' experience working with young language learners through VIPKID. She is currently the owner of Melanie Boyd Creative where she offers support as a Pinterest Account Specialist.

Tarlin and Mike return again. This time to run it back to the history of dominant sports dads who built cultures and drew fire as their offspring rose to unprecedented heights in the sports world. We begin by looking at the story of LaVar Ball who is attempting to build a family business in the NBA with Lonzo Ball and likely 2021 Rookie of the Year LaMelo Ball already thriving. From there, we run it back to the narratives around Earl Woods raising Tiger Woods and Richard Dove Williams Jr raising Venus and Serena Williams. What do these stories have in common and what lessons can we learn about parenting, leadership, and family? We explore all of this and also look at the frequently unsung roles of the mothers in these sports families. Are we really talking about Co-CEOs as the key to building a sports legend? How are these alpha Dads reminiscent of Steve Jobs? And is Kultida Woods truly the Tiger Mom of all Tiger Moms? Listen in to find out. MIT undergrad. FAANG internships. Antitrust economic consulting. Stanford PhD candidacy. No question Allison Koenecke is an academic force. Beyond impressive institutional associations -- which she seldom spotlights -- what has made her a true force of nature (or shall we say, software?) is the research she's leading to address equitability in mainstream technologies. Specifically, Allison's bringing visibility to the blind spots tech companies have been operating with while training their machine learning models. For instance, did you know voice assistants (i.e. Siri, Alexa) register twice as many errors when processing African American colloquial English? Allison is a researcher who's working towards a tech future that is built on the foundation of a more diverse set of colors, creeds, and communities. Beyond chatting about her journey to and within her PhD candidacy at Stanford's Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering, we talk about parental expectations, leading teams, and quick tips to getting more done during the day. The TITT Talks Podcast - Modern Women Living in a Mama World
This is it – the final episode of our first season! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for continuing to tune in. We’ve heard from so many of you that you can relate to our stories, have learned from our experiences, and/or have simply been entertained! We are humbled, and we are so grateful! Throughout our Season 1 episodes, you have heard some tales of the powerful womxn who bore and raised the members of TITT Talks. This episode is an ode to our moms. We discuss their journeys, their quirks, their strengths, and their all-around badassery. We are forever thankful for their unconditional love and to have them as role models as we navigate this crazy world of motherhood. ____________________________________________ ABOUT TITT TALKS TITT Talks was “conceived” in January of 2020 during one of TITT’s many friend/family (“framily”) get-togethers. In conversation, it came to light that there was a lack of representation of womxn like TITT in, among other forms of media, the podcast world. In particular, there was no podcast that TITT could subscribe to that would enable them to feel seen, heard, or understood as modern Asian Pacific American working mothers. The womxn of TITT Talks knew that this void was one they could fill by sharing their voices and experiences through their casual conversations, which were already taking place on a routine basis. Thank you for the positive feedback we have received since our launch in early June 2020. We are delighted to hear that we are bringing you content that you can finally relate to as mothers, professionals, millennials, and Asian Pacific Americans. ____________________________________________CONNECT WITH US Sign up for our NEWSLETTER – TITT Talks Tea IG: titt_talks FACEBOOK: TITT Talks E-MAIL: TITTtalks@gmail.com YOUTUBE: TITT Talks Podcast ____________________________________________ WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU What topics would you like to hear discussed on the show? Tiger parenting. Many of us joke about it. Many of us compare, share stories, and even compete on who had the most tigerest parents of them all. Janet and Brian look back on some of their experiences with Tiger parents and Janet even brings up the Korean social influence of a tiger society (?). The outcome can lead to some mental health issues that are difficult to address. Tune in to hear more! At first glance, Generation Z (youth born after 1997) seems to be made up of anxious overachievers, hounded by Tiger Moms and constantly tracked on social media. One would think that competitors in the National Spelling Bee the most popular brain sport in America would be the worst off. Counterintuitively, anthropologist Shalini Shankar argues that, far from being simply overstressed and overscheduled, Gen Z spelling bee competitors are learning crucial twenty-first-century skills from their high-powered lives, displaying a sophisticated understanding of self-promotion, self-direction, and social mobility. Drawing on original ethnographic research, including interviews with participants, judges, and parents, Shankar examines the outsize impact of immigrant parents and explains why Gen Z kids are on a path to success.
Right now, you’re thinking about what all the other parents are doing. What schools they’re getting their kids into. What the best strollers are. You’re thinking about how to get them to do their homework or how to keep their rooms clean. How to manage your life and career and staying in shape. It’s overwhelming and you’re stressed.Every dad is. So maybe it’s helpful to sit back and really think about what parental success really looks like. First, of course, it’s having healthy kids who survive to adulthood—that’s obvious. But second, when you flash way forward into the future, what is it? It’s that beautiful phrase captured in The Highwomen hit—it’s having a crowded table. At Thanksgiving. On birthdays. At some summer house on the beach you all rented as a family. That is: having kids who you get to see, who you have a good relationship with, who you want to spend time with...for the rest of your days. Tiger Moms and Tiger Dads might raise Harvard grads, but will they have crowded tables? Snowplow parents might feel important for the first eighteen years of their kids’ lives, but will those kids resent them for spoiling and sheltering them? Instead of a crowded table, might their house be crowded with kids who have failed to launch? Some of the best lyrics in the Highwomen song capture the path forward for a dad who is looking forward to those crowded table days:If we want a gardenWe're gonna have to sow the seedPlant a little happinessLet the roots run deepIf it's love that we giveThen it's love that we reapIf we want a gardenWe're gonna have to sow the seedIf you want a crowded table, you’ll need to plant the seeds. You’ll need to make the decisions now so they’ll want to make the decision to fly from their homes to yours when they’re older and have families of their own. That means listening without judgment. That means being a fan and a supporter. That means loving unconditionally. That means managing your temper. You’ll need to set the table today to have the one you’ll want tomorrow.
This week, we’re excited to release our newest podcast with guest Megan Dolan. Megan is an actor and writer who self-identifies as a “lemur mom” -- because, in her words, “we can’t all be tiger moms.” We had a great conversation about what it means to be a lemur mom, how Megan has worked through her own diagnosis along this journey, and balancing home life with her wonderful creative work. Dear tiger moms, we love you and we know that parenthood is not easy. While some of us may have fond memories of choosing the colours of our canes and learning to outrun them, how many of us truly managed to outgrow it? Tune in as we explore the topic on gaslighting and tiger moms, and hear our experiences growing up in an Asian culture.
Throughout this show, we've always discussed how conservative values are defined, and how progressivism has taken control of our societies. When God is removed, and religion is stamped out, it allows for people to be more easily manipulated. Darwinism is an example of this, not just with the theory of evolution, but racism via the advocacy of a superior race.
Topic: In prior episodes, we’ve discussed Free-Range Parenting. There are other styles including Helicopters, Tiger Moms and the like. Today we will be discussing Snowplow parenting. From the cited Today’s Parent website, this is a fairly newer ‘parenting technique’ that has caused controversy regarding its practice. They want to remove any pain or difficulties from their children’s paths so that their kids can succeed. Should we (as parents) be removing obstacles for own children? Why/not? Is the snowplowing style a reflection of current parents own upbringing? What has changed? Momologist of the Week: Antonia Michaela. #175: Journalist/parent educator Katherine Reynolds Lewis and I bond over our love for our strict, hyper-achieving Tiger Moms, our fear of disappointing them, and our strong need to parent our children differently. In The Good News About Bad Behavior: Why Kids Are Less Disciplined Than EverAnd What to Do About It, Lewis writes, “we are facing a crisis of self-regulation”. Kids today are spiraling out of control. We talk about how to address the emotional needs of our children and ourselves, how to get our kids on board for household work, the neurological side-effects of critical mothering, the apprenticeship model of parenting, and our soulful mission as mothers. Are we pressuring kids into the wrong kind of success? What are the implications for healthcare? And why does Tom have a 1.6 GPA??
I’ve often told the story of a newly minted teacher considering her first job. She had several offers, but in the end there were two that were intriguing to her. One in a difficult and struggling inner city school district; the other in a very wealthy, upper middle class suburban enclave. She said that she felt like it was a decision between difficult students or difficult parents. In that choice, we come to understand one of the dilemmas of today's educational system. The extremes between parents who simply don’t have the time or knowledge to engage in their kid's education, or parents like those portrayed as Tiger Moms, or the Upper East Side moms of Primates of Park Avenue, who take helicopter parenting to a new extreme. Worse yet, it generally reaches its apogee at precisely the time in Middle School when kids could most benefit from personal responsibility, social emotional development and yes, even owning their failure. This is what NY Times and Atlantic contributor Jessica Lahey writes about in The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed. My conversation with Jessica Lahey:

The trend in parenting that seems to be getting the most attention these days is that of the Tiger Mother: the super-strict, no playtime, achievement-oriented, hard-driving parent. But many in our culture have a problem with that approach, and our panel is here to discuss different means of parenting. Guests are Armin "Mr. Dad" Brott, author of The Expectant Father, psychologist Dr. John Duffy (author The Available Parent), Lynette Louise (author Miracles Are Made—A Real Life Guide To Autism), psychologist Dr. Nancy Buck (creator of Peaceful Parenting and author of Why Do Kids Act That Way), CPA Cheryl Smith, and real life parent Paula.
1. Alex Chua has been getting death threats since her recent op-ed/excerpt appeared in the Wall Street Journal espousing the value of being a “Tiger Mom.” She’s a Yale University professor of law, she has raised two daughters that would be outstanding young women by nearly any measure. So why do you think she has gotten such push-back in writing her memoirs? 877.573.8446.2. The new TV show SKINS debuted and has the Parents Television Council screaming “Child ” to all the appropriate legal and judicial authorities. In all likelihood MTV will scrape by with some sort of “skin of teeth” legalism. Taco Bell has dropped it’s advertising, but will this action be enough to get the network to whip its act into shape? And who’s responsibility is it for your teens? The networks? Or the parents?
