Vaish and Searmi return for another Tiger Moms Chat—they talk about “Non Linear Education”. From abandoning division to rediscovering the power of poetry, Vaish shares the personal story behind the name Non Linear Education, and both moms reflect on what happens when you stop chasing curriculum and start chasing connection. Whether you're new to presuming competence or have been supporting a non-speaker for years, this episode is your permission slip to step out of the box—and into the zone. What you'll hear in this episode: – Why learning doesn't have to be (and often shouldn't be) linear – The myth of the “fluke” and how it holds our kids back – What flow states and horse training have to do with math and poetry – Why scaffolding doesn't always mean breaking things down – How to shift from building a bridge to weaving a web ✨ Ready to rethink how your child learns? Non Linear Education is now open for enrollment. This course is for parents of autistic and neurodivergent learners who are ready to teach real academics—with joy, flexibility, and full respect for how their children think, move, and grow.

The Tiger Moms Chat is a series of unfiltered hard-hitting (sometimes) conversations. As Searmi and Vaish wonder what it is to be a tiger mom - they think that being a tiger mom partly means pushing past comfort zones. We discuss a few controversial topics in this episode - including the Telepathy Tapes - both for and against. From Vaish: "The question is not if telepathy is real. It is - is it necessary to sensationalize an already marginalized group?" We discuss if presuming competence is the same as presuming genius and more. Please check out Episode 171 for more on Apraxia.

Here is a common view on human development: In the beginning, children can only think about themselves. Slowly, they learn to care about others — or more cynically, they learn to pretend that they care about others. Variations of this view have been promoted by thinkers from Sigmund Freud to Richard Dawkins. This view has then been used to make predictable conclusions about ethics: human morality is either a social construct — fearfully internalized — or a clever tactic, used by selfish individuals to reap the benefits of teamwork. But what evidence do we actually have about young children's motivations? Do they genuinely not care about others? To discuss these questions I have Dr Amrisha Vaish on the show. Vaish is a developmental psychologist at the University of Virginia, famous for her work on pro-social motivations in young children. We discuss issues such as: How spontaneous is it for young children to help others? Why do children help others? Do they want praise or do they genuinely care about others? How early does empathy emerge? Different forms of empathy; or the subtle difference between matching others' emotions versus caring about others' emotios? What should parents do to help children grow to be more caring? Neurodiversity and empathy in autism Is anyone born a psychopath? Where does mundane cruelty (e.g. to animals) come from? The difference between sympathy and guilt; and why does the latter emerge later? What decades of studying young children has taught Vaish about our species _________ Please consider becoming a supporter of On Humans. Even if I am with her, I am constantly thinking about what needs to be done- work, podcast, chores. When I play with her, I feel that I don't teach her and when I teach her, I feel that we could be having fun.I also feel dissatisfied by my husband's contribution in parenting and feel that he can do more. And because I feel so much guilt, I am too lenient with Idhaya sometimes and too strict at others so we don't have proper boundaries.Though some amount of guilt might be ok as it motivates us to do better but many of us have a lot of it. This might overwhelm us and feelings might come out in an unexpected way.In this episode, Clinical psychologist Prachi S Vaish will help us in managing this feeling. Prachi is a relationship and trauma therapist and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. Prachi will tell us about--mom-guilt and mom-shaming-how shaming ourselves affects our mental health-how to overcome the feelings of guilt and shame-how to create healthy boundaries with kids-how to have better understanding with our spouse in terms of parentingConnect with Prachi S. This week's episode is a special one as it is the one year anniversary of this little project I started so I had to pull out all of the stops to make this episode as exciting as possible. This meant that I was not only joined by one guest but TWO special guests talking about the only (valid) topic a group of three can talk about, iconic pop culture trios! Join Kiran, Vaish and I as we breakdown the purpose of trios within media that we consume today as well as where the future of trios would potential go. In between that, we talk about comedic trios, love triangles and heroic trios as well as how we relate to specific trios. This episode was incredibly fun (and longer than usual) to record! Enjoy :) P.S. To everyone who has been listening to the podcast, thank you! Your support means so much to me and I promise you that this is only the beginning for Deets With Dita! Hope to see you in more years to come :))
In this episode Vaish and Jodi Cohen talk about how essential oils can be that "bypass" or "magic bullet" that can stimulate the vagus nerve, calm fight-or-flight, and bring children (and adults) into a parasympathetic state. Essential Oils can work when more traditional foods and supplements don't, because they can diffuse through the skin, and reach the brain quicker through the olfactory system. If you have a child that is a resistant eater, or with significant GI inflammation, this podcast may be of use to you.

As you know, here at The Brain Possible, we're all about the possibilities for your child, not their limitations. That's why Dr. Vaish(VIIISh) Sarathy, with a background in chemistry and functional nutrition, speaks our language. We're drawn to her work at Functional Nutrition for Kids, where she works with families of children with Down syndrome, autism, and other “intellectual disabilities,” helping them to optimize health, behavior, and learning. That term “intellectual disabilities” is in quotes on purpose, as another key to Vaish's story is her own journey with her differently-abled son. After being told her son would never be able to learn, today his progress is astounding. He even writes poetry! In today's discussion, we'll learn about Vaish's personal journey--and how she uses that passion and robust knowledge to help her clients.Support the show (https://whoiscarter.z2systems.com/np/clients/whoiscarter/donation.jsp)

Dr Vaishnavi Sarathy is a Functional Nutrition Practitioner, a TedX speaker and Podcast Host. She is passionate about giving kids a fair chance at life through nutrition that sustains them, food that prevents autoimmunity, nutrients that boost brain function, and a digestive system that works with a thriving microbiome. That also means an equal education and assuming competence regardless of appearance. Vaish is a Functional Nutrition Educator, with two Masters and a Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry! Her life changed when her son was born with Down Syndrome and was later diagnosed as being Autistic. She explored conventional options for the first 4 years of his life including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, communication therapy, horseback riding and doctors. Every practitioner she met told her that genetics could not be helped, and that she must resign to having a child who would experience extreme intellectual delay with minimal chances at life! She decided to train herself in nutrition. She knew how every kid could learn and that labels were mostly for the convenience of the system. Her son is 13, he does algebra, he writes poetry, and yes, he is still non-speaking! She believes that an equal accessible education and sound nutrition are the birthright of every child! In this episode, we dive into: “Sleep & Children with Special Needs” Vaish's journey with her son who has Down's, Autism & Cerebral Palsy. The impact of disability and denial and the resultant loss of time to acceptance of his ability to thrive. Is sleep poor for children with disability? What is seen typically? Is it that they cannot fall asleep at all, or struggle to stay sleeping or do they have an unnatural rhythm? What are the four primary reasons why children with disabilities struggle with sleep? What are some of the practices that have not worked? What is the popular sleep nutrient that may actually make sleep challenges worse in children with disabilities? When it comes to sleep supplements, can method of usage actually make sleep worse? You cannot even diagnose a child with learning disabilities if the child is not sleeping well. Sleep is critical. Is it the other way around as well, where poor sleep increases symptoms and behaviour challenges and learning? Where do you try and break that vicious cycle? What are some of the practices that have worked more often than not? Does Dr Vaish see some sort of a pattern? Does she find herself intuitively knowing what will work at a specific time? How can other parents tune into that intuition? What can parents actually do to support their child's digestion? How does Dr Vaish see sleep playing a big role in managing special needs in terms of symptom challenges, behaviour patterns, learning and more? What is the best sleep food plate for children with special needs that is sleep supportive? What is on that plate? Is there a difference between animal based and plant based diets for children with disabilities? What are some speciality diets for children with disabilities? What is the idea behind low carb diets for children with disability? What is the best tool to use for better sleep for children with disability? Dr Vaish's mantra is assume competence. What does it mean for a parent to assume competence? If sleep is the new medicine, then ………… Here are the links mentioned on the show: 1)Rhythmic Movement: https://www.moveplaythrive.com 2)Qigong: http://www.qsti.org For more on Dr Vaish Sarathy, you can follow her: Website: https://projectswasthya.com Podcast: https://projectswasthya.com/podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/functionalnutritionforkids Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drvaishsarathy/ -For more on Deepa, The Sleep Whisperer, be sure to follow her on Instagram @mysleepwhisperer and @phytothrive_yogini, on Facebook Deepa Kannan. “The cost of just running a coal plant is much higher than starting a greenfield solar plant,” says Nitin Vaish, an emerging and climate change expert, also an investor in the same space. I highly recommend his insightful personal blog which goes in-depth in analyzing metrics related to the climate and energy tech landscape. He talks about batteries, per capita energy cost and how this cost is becoming lower, accelerating the adoption of clean tech: https://medium.com/@nitinvaishHe predicts that eventually, the cost of energy will come down enough to accelerate the adoption of clean energy vehicles. Anurag Vaish is the co-founder and director of The FinalMile in Mumbai, India. In building the company's practice of Behavior Architecture, Anurag led the conceptualization and development of digital games as a platform for research. Anurag brings over 17 years of experience in strategic planning, research and marketing communication. Our conversation with him allowed him to highlight some of the work FinalMile is doing with the Indian government. More importantly, Anurag and his team are building a Pandemic Playbook (link below) which is an archive of data points, interventions, communication, trends in activities and observations and it will be available for the world and for future crises. One of his greatest observations is that because we experience risk as a feeling, not a set of numbers, many world leaders are missing an opportunity to improve the effectiveness of their communication. He’s also looking at how self (distance) learning could be carried on after the virus. © 2020 Behavioral Grooves Links Connect with Kurt and Tim: Kurt Nelson, PhD: @WhatMotivates e-mail: kurt@lanterngroup.com Tim Houlihan: @THoulihan e-mail: tim@behavioralchemy.com Lantern Group: http://lanterngroup.com/ BehaviorAlchemy: https://www.behavioralchemy.com/ Behavioral Grooves: https://behavioralgrooves.com/ Weekly Grooves: https://weeklygrooves.podbean.com/ Common Biases & Heuristics: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XHpBr0VFcaT8wIUpr-9zMIb79dFMgOVFRxIZRybiftI/edit# Patreon Site for Behavioral Grooves: https://www.patreon.com/behavioralgrooves General Coronavirus Info: Daily Newsletter Summarizing data from Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security: http://www.centerforhealthsecurity.org/newsroom/newsletters/e-newsletter-sign-up.html CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html Great videos on the science behind this by Dr. Peter Attia – this is the first in a series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNVhLyAlfA4 What is herd immunity?: https://www.technologyreview.com/s/615375/what-is-herd-immunity-and-can-it-stop-the-coronavirus/ A list curated by Liam.Delaney@UCD.ie https://docs.google.com/document/d/11GLhX7hLf64Bxkdpv5hvYHqOjS1imlcMQFjJBJ-9oUM/edit Coronavirus & Behavioral Science: Selected Links: The Behavioral Sice of Coronavirus: https://behavioralscientist.org/selected-links-the-behavioral-science-of-the-coronavirus-covid-19/ Why no one is reading your coronavirus email: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/13/opinions/coronavirus-emails-effective-messaging-rogers/index.html Handwashing can stop a virus, so why don’t we do it?: https://behavioralscientist.org/handwashing-can-stop-a-virus-so-why-dont-we-do-it-coronavirus-covid-19/ The behavioral science of handwashing: https://think.ing.com/articles/the-behavioural-science-of-hand-washing/ Ideas 42: The Behavioral Side of COVID-19 here: https://ideas42.org/covid19/ Greater Good: https://twitter.com/GreaterGoodSC How We Can Cope During This Crisis: Tip Sheet from HUMU: https://humu.com/remote-nudges/ Resources for learning at home: https://fordhaminstitute.org/national/commentary/resources-learning-home-during-covid-19-school-closures?utm_source=join1440&utm_medium=email&utm_placement=etcetera General Behavioral Science Links: Common Biases and Heuristics: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XHpBr0VFcaT8wIUpr-9zMIb79dFMgOVFRxIZRybiftI/edit# Jonathan Haidt – 5 Moral Foundations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory Annie Duke’s “How To Decide”: https://www.amazon.com/How-Decide-Simple-Making-Choices/dp/0593084608 “16 Ways To Promote Hand Washing With Behavioral Science” article by Aline Holzwarth: https://www.forbes.com/sites/alineholzwarth/2020/03/25/handwashing-with-behavioral-science/#261b4b9f768d Aline Holzwarth’s Playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0H5fsQRrqslGdBhhx8d4Aw?si=0jra0rU1Qu2vQNtqjbRvZA Deontological and Consequential Moralities: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/ethics-deontological/#DeoTheKan Difference between descriptive and injunctive norms: https://psychology.stackexchange.com/questions/6193/whats-the-difference-between-injunctive-norms-and-descriptive-norms Emotion Research from FinalMile: http://finalmile.in/research/ Pandemic Playbook from FinalMile: https://www.playbookforpandemic.com/

In this episode, we talk with Anurag Vaish, Co-Founder of TheFinalMile, one of the largest behavioral science consultancies in the world. TheFinalMile has offices in Mumbai and Chicago and we caught up with Anurag while he was in India in December of 2017. Our conversation covered topics from how the unconscious influences our decision making, why organizations should do more testing of their ideas as well as the influence that Robert Cialdini, PhD had on Anurag. We also discussed some of the projects that TheFinalMile has done – particularly the train safety project in Mumbai – which now saves thousands of lives every year. It is a great example of the power that companies can have if they use good science and really focus on understanding what actually drives our behavior. We followed some rabbit holes into how the human brain is lazy and the impact that environment and choice architecture have on our behaviors. NOTE: There are a few moments of bad internet connection where some words get jumbled; however, the majority is clear and we are grateful for that clarity being 10’s of thousands of miles apart when we spoke.
