Sick of spending money for little to no payout? Tired of investing in strategies that no longer work? I get it. We’ve all been there. We’ve all thrown money at false marketing schemes in hopes of hitting the jackpot. But what if I told you that you didn’t have to treat marketing like a casino? What if there was a better way to build your business than unsafe bets? This week, I am sharing with you Lesson #10 that I have learned in business. When you treat Marketing like a casino, you lose a lot more than the money you threw on the table. So many people believe that by placing all your bets into one slot machine, the payout is exponential.  But that’s NOT how Marketing works! Marketing is more about building long-lasting relationships than chasing dollar signs. Instead of hoping to hit the jackpot, learn how to leverage those relationships for the long haul. Don’t let the bright lights and fancy card tricks blind you from investing in your future.  Topics Discussed: Why you don’t have to spend millions of dollars on Ad Spend to be successful Focusing on backend systems & dialing in your business for a better ROI The hard truth about treating marketing & relationships like casinos Knowing when to increase your marketing efforts for your business Learn More About Start to Finish Marketing Visit: www.starttofinishmarketing.com

Oftentimes we are very hard on ourselves.  We think we have to perform a certain way, that we have to live up to expectations of others, that we have to be available whenever someone needs us, that we have to give and never take.  But in reality that is not a healthy way to live. In this episode I talk with you about how it is okay to focus on you, it’s okay to ignore the phone call or take the day off because sometimes we need that time to unplug and not have anyone relying on us.  We have to be kind to ourselves because often we are the only ones that are. So take a load off, unplug, destress, and take some time for you, because you are worth it, and your time and energy must be protected so that you can be the best you.  Please connect with us in our private Facebook Group: It’s All Mental Podcast. Are you taking the time to regularly assess your retail business as the Creative CEO, my friend? As creatives and small business owners, sometimes we get swept up in the day-to-day of shopkeeping tasks — tidying displays, opening inventory boxes, conducting workshops, or providing customer service.  While these are all incredibly important aspects of working in your business, they are not the Creative CEO efforts that work on your business to strategically help you move the needle and build momentum. For that, I habitually conduct a CEO Date every Monday to work on my own business and stay on the path to success. In this episode, I walk you step-by-step through each piece I include in my CEO Date and cover the must-dos I see countless retailers use to build incredible success. We cover everything from marketing to metrics to self-care, so get out a notepad and dive into this lesson on starting this vital habit for your retail business. You can grab the checklist to guide your CEO Date here. I’ve been doing these CEO Dates for years and will continue to do them weekly because I find them powerful in focusing on success.  Remember, even though you’re the independent-type that started your own business, you are not meant to do this alone. We offer a full continuum of care, from medical detox to sober living all supported by an ever-growing alumni community network. Our evidence-based curriculum blends the best of the old with the new, all supporting our mission: that Recovery is best pursued when meaningful, intentional positive habits are formed through empowerment and resilience instead of negativity and shame.  What is Positive Recovery? Empathy and compassion drive our mission. Positive Recovery uses strengths as a pathway to help others flourish in recovery, at work, and at home. This is our core purpose, our “why.” We creatively apply science in order to improve outcomes. Positive Recovery is not wishful thinking, it is not a magic pill, and it is not self-help. Positive Recovery is an evidence-based addiction curriculum that links the best of the old with the new, integrating existing effective approaches to treatment with interventions that enhance well-being by cultivating its components: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and achievement. Quotes: Dr. Jason Powers, MD “There’s no skill in a pill. Pills can work but at best, they are an adjunct” “If I could bottle time, then I wouldn’t have much work to do. With the right therapy, it takes time, it takes baby steps.” “There is this urge to try to control things. Uncertainty of life is one of the driving forces.” Julie DeNofa “OCD seems to manifest around areas that are closest or most important to you.” “Helping someone every day is something that I feel fortunate to be able to do whether it’s on the employee side or on the client side.” Dr. Elizabeth McIngvale, PhD “It’s not about who you are or what degrees that you have behind your name. It’s about who you help.” “Anytime we think about what we’re in treatment for when it’s anxiety based, there is usually an underlying core fear or concern.” “Exposure therapy shouldn’t be dangerous or risky. Exposure therapy shouldn’t be putting people in harm's way. It should be things anyone would be willing to do.” “OCD is not an adjective. OCD is not helpful and doesn’t help you be more organized or more clean. It’s destructive and disabling.” “Everybody has weird or bizarre interests of thought. The difference though, is how we respond to them.”

We hope that you enjoyed last month’s conversations centered around self-love! This year is FLYING by and as we enter into the last half of 2020 I want to take some time to discuss with you the topic of grief and shine a light on how to say goodbye to the person or experience we are grieving in a healthy and healing way. In today’s episode, I share with you why this topic is so dear to my heart. Although I have not personally experienced grief in the sense of losing someone close to me unexpectedly, I recently experienced a deep fear of the unknown of grief. I have so many questions about it and have realized that I know little about the topic.  I have been spending week’s researching it and talking to others about what grief is and how we overcome it. I am going to share these conversations with you and we are going to dig in together and learn more about the inevitable events that we will all one day face and explore how we can get through them the best way that we can. I also have learned that there are many forms of grief and even if you have not experienced the loss of someone you still have experienced grief. What is it like to live with Bipolar? If you are struggling with a mental illness it can feel incredibly isolating because of the stigma attached to your diagnosis. Today we have an incredible guest, Sara Benbassat, who generously shares her story in order to break the shame around Bipolar and humanize the experience that many people face. One of the goals of Hope to Recharge is to break the stigma around mental illness. As Sara mentions in today’s episode, mental struggles are more common than we may like to admit and it is likely that if you do not struggle personally, there is someone in your family that does. One of the ways that we can break the stigma is to hold space for the experiences and stories of others. Sara shares about the mental health climate in London where she lives and what it was like when she first started experiencing signs of her illness. She walks us through her journey of having psychotic episodes, being admitted into a hospital, and the pain of being taken away from her daughter. We walk through navigating relationships and discovering your identity after experiencing trauma. Sara also talks about the process of forgiving and giving yourself grace during difficult times. As she says, “everything is a process” and although the journey can be long, you do not have to suffer in silence. We hope this story brings you clarity about the diagnosis of Bipolar whether you are walking through it yourself or you have a loved one who is. The journey does not have to be walked through alone. Of all the Talent Acquisition Leader jobs I’ve seen, the most unique has to be Rob Dromgoole’s role at The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. And check your stereotypes about Native Americans at the door, because it’s not what you think. Their guiding principles are Faith, Family, and Culture, and The 10 Commandments are posted outside of every Choctaw Nation building. Servant leadership is the norm and they open every meeting with prayer. But Rob is no stranger to unique and challenging TA leader roles. He brings a load of experience recruiting impossible-to-find skill sets into out-of-the way geographies like Nuclear Engineers and Physicists to arid eastern Washington for Pacific Northwest National Laboratories. As a former editor and photojournalist for the US Army, Rob learned early in his career about the art of storytelling. Later while at Executive Search Firm ROI, Rob shares how his former boss would point out random individuals walking by in downtown Seattle and would ask him to “share their story”, as weaving an individual’s story eventually became a differentiator for him. We also discuss how Choctaw Nation’s diverse TA Team is navigating through the COVID-19 challenge, adapting to virtual work while supporting their need for connection with each other. When we focus on the needs of our own communities, Rob told me, we are able to create opportunities for others to grow and prosper. However, many of us get stuck in a routine that we feel like we have to make decisions in order to make other people happy. My guest this week, Mark West says he believes that  we “all have a runner in us”. Mark is a long distance runner and mental health advocate who is using his platform to not only encourage everyone to adapt a running routine into their life but do so to improve their mental health. Today we learn about a tragic accident that sparked Mark’s passion for running and how fitness was later used to help him when he started struggling with depression and anxiety.  We talk about the metaphor that running represents in mental health, allowing us to literally (and figuratively) put “one foot in front of the other” and view the “hills” in our lives as opportunities for growth. We also talk about what it has been like to be a high achieving male and be so vocal about his mental health when the stigma around men and mental illness is very real.  Mark also shares a POWERFUL insight on why walking and running might be a better option to talk to people who are struggling than “going for a coffee”. He shares about how this journey has opened his eyes to the importance of empathy and the need for us to discover “what works for us”. This was such a profound episode with many insights about mental health and opens the conversation about the variety of ways that we can find healing. However we want to hear from YOU! Why am I talking about gratitude? Why is my tone so upbeat? When there is so much uncertainty in the world, when so many people are afraid, I truly believe this is when gratitude is most important and key to shifting our mindset during all the uncertainty.  This doesn’t mean that the pain doesn’t exist. However when we tap into our gratitude (and there is always something to be grateful for!) it gives us a moment to disconnect from fear. Gratitude is like a blanket of comfort during the darkest of times. Sometimes the outside world is our security. When it seems to be crumbling down, gratitude is what shifts us from a state of stress to a place of calm. Today I walk you through the good we have in our lives right now and how we can (and should) be increasing our gratitude practice.  I also wanted to share with you a story about a woman I met at Walmart and how important it is for us to show kindness and gratitude to those around us. I want to challenge you to be a light when the world seems to be in darkness. Now more than ever we need to be that light. We would love to hear from you! Today we are digging into how we can better understand our emotions, improve our mood, and gain control of our thoughts! We have the perfect person to guide us in this conversation, my friend and incredibly accomplished therapist, Elisheva Liss. Elishiva shares with us about why she was originally drawn to the mental health field and what she has found in her years of research and countless hours spent counseling individuals and couples. She breaks down for us the process of narrative therapy and how we can rewire the way we think and view our ever changing emotions. She shares with us about the “triangle of relationships”, why we should never “gloss over” our emotions, and why there are times that we do NOT need to have “positive” thoughts (instead opt in for “healthy” ones). She also shares with us a few techniques that we can start using today (like the “but” technique!) that will help us to better frame our thoughts and ultimately improve our mood. We end the conversation with a powerful dialogue about relationships and how we can use this information to deepen our connection with not only ourselves but with those we love. I know you are going to learn so much from this conversation with Elishiva. Please connect with us in our private Facebook group, Hope to Recharge, and let us know what you learned! Our instincts pull us away from anything that is threatening, but when we can understand the way our minds work, it becomes a little easier to step into the unknown no matter how scary it may feel! Have you ever wondered how to turn a NO into a YES? Maybe you are wanting to land a spot as a guest speaker at a huge event but the opportunity hasn’t yet presented itself. Or maybe you are trying to sell your product to a major company, but you haven't yet had a breakthrough. Regardless of how many times you’ve heard the word “no”, what if there was a way to redefine the meaning?    This week, I am sharing my strategy on how to turn a no into a yes with one simple mindset shift. When we begin to provide value to other people outside of our own community, we are then able to cultivate even stronger relationships. In fact, once we actively show up for others, “no” doesn’t get the final say. If you’ve ever been told “no” after chasing your dreams, this episode is for you.    Topics Discussed: Why we need to shift our mindset from a “no” to a “not now” How to strategize a plan on how to show up in someone else’s world Why adding value to other communities is beneficial for everyone ---  Connect with Mark Crandall   Join the exclusive Purpose Chasers ® Facebook group for unreleased content, interviews, live coaching, not to mention the epic community supporting, encouraging, and challenging each other to fulfill their dreams.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/thePurposechasers/ Why should you join? There are many ways to find relief from depression. There are creative ways to cope with anxiety. As humans there is not a “one size fits all” approach to anything and especially in our mental wellness. This week we are talking all things mental health, creativity, and the power of surrender. In this conversation, I connected with the INCREDIBLE Xandra Robinson-Burns who is an Essayist, Founder of Heroine Training™️ and the creator of Everyday Wonderland™️.  She shares with us about her journey as a young girl discovering the world of fiction and how she used it in later years to cope with her depression.  Xandra has a powerful story about how as a young child she was a “deep thinker” and “always aware” of her experience. She started experiencing signs of depression as a young woman and had a painful experience of being dismissed by a counselor that she confided in. She now uses her experience to help others break free from shame and learn their own creative ways of dealing with mental illness.  In today’s episode, we talk about the power of stillness, why we should not suppress out dreams, and how it is OKAY to feel whatever it is that you are feeling. Xandra encourages us to sit with our depression and to not feel guilt around what we are feeling. She also shares the importance of celebrating small wins and finding the “magic” for where you already are.  Need extra support? Dr. Stone Kraushaar, also known as the “Hug Doctor” says that hugs can be a game-changer for our mental wellbeing and shares with us why we underestimate the power of a hug. Dr. Kraushaar is a clinical psychologist who was originally practicing therapy at college campuses. A few years ago he felt a strong shift and began his own personal development journey. After experiencing the transformation of giving hugs to strangers he set out on a mission to study and teach the connection between us all through the power of hugging. In this enlightening conversation, Dr. Hug shares with us why he recommends 21-second hugs, why we should be “radically transparent”, and why he believes that “all people share a profound human connection”.
