It happened without warning and preparation. Students around the world became lab rats for the world's largest experiment in online and distance learning when the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to close their doors. It did not go well says Mark West, a senior policy analyst at UNESCO the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Five years on from the lockdowns, we're seeing the unintended consequences of digital learning including lower test scores, higher inequities as well as greater physical and mental health challenges. West says that relying on tech alone is no substitute for thoughtful policy, trained teachers, and human connection, during a pandemic or not. The evidence and arguments are in a free book called An Ed-Tech Tragedy? Educational Technologies and School Closures in the Time of COVID-19.

For the first time since the deadly shooting of youth football coach Mike Hickmon, we hear directly from the witnesses on the field during the tragedy. Dragon Elite Academy Coaches Kerrie Lewis, Mark West, and Heith Mayes share the details of what began as an argument with game officials that turned deadly. They believe the tragedy was completely preventable, and the blame for sparking the events that led to the shooting lays solely on one man: former NFL star Aqib Talib. “Aqib incited the whole uproar,” Dragon Elite coach Kerry Lewis tells Jason. “The game would've never been stopped had Aqib not come over to our sideline to yell at the refs.” "Fearless" is the only place where you will hear the story of how a pee-wee game turned violent and left Aqib's brother Yakub Talib in jail on murder charges. This tragedy highlights two issues: the epidemic of black-on-black crime and the proliferation of adult misconduct in youth sports. "Fearless" contributors T.J.

In this episode, Craig speaks with author Mark West about his article, Is Political Power Devilish, and his book, What He Said: Living the Sermon on the Mount Transforming American Culture.   As a self-proclaimed Xvangelical(a term for a former Evangelical who now centers all scripture interpretation on the words and actions of Christ, with a focus on living out His kingdom right now), Mark helps us strip back our political attachment to a nation-state so we may return to Christ's vision for us, not a politician's.    Mark does not want us to deconstruct our faith, but rather renovate it from its complexities so we can refocus on what Jesus said and did. Christ's challenge for us is not easy, it is hard to love one's enemy, to turn the other cheek, to not worry about tomorrow, to not outsource our responsibilities as Christians through electing “Christian” leaders to politics, but our call will always be greater than any nation past or to come. Our King and our Kingdom are not of this world and Mark invites us to rise to this challenge to be the body of Christ in our everyday life, not at a ballot box.   You can connect with Mark and read more of his work at https://mark4libertas.wordpress.com/ and find his book at https://www.markwest-author.com/.   Blog submissions: thebadroman.com/contribute-to-the-blog   Connect with us on social: thebadroman.com/social-links   Want to get more involved? When we become blinded by our religiosity we tend to forget we do not get to choose our neighbors, but every one of God's creations is our neighbor that we are called to love. No matter what group someone may appear to be a member of, Christians are called to show them the love of Christ rather than to force our Faith. My guest this week, Mark West says he believes that  we “all have a runner in us”. Mark is a long distance runner and mental health advocate who is using his platform to not only encourage everyone to adapt a running routine into their life but do so to improve their mental health. Today we learn about a tragic accident that sparked Mark’s passion for running and how fitness was later used to help him when he started struggling with depression and anxiety.  We talk about the metaphor that running represents in mental health, allowing us to literally (and figuratively) put “one foot in front of the other” and view the “hills” in our lives as opportunities for growth. We also talk about what it has been like to be a high achieving male and be so vocal about his mental health when the stigma around men and mental illness is very real.  Mark also shares a POWERFUL insight on why walking and running might be a better option to talk to people who are struggling than “going for a coffee”. He shares about how this journey has opened his eyes to the importance of empathy and the need for us to discover “what works for us”. This was such a profound episode with many insights about mental health and opens the conversation about the variety of ways that we can find healing. However we want to hear from YOU!
