Candid conversation alert! Cozy up with me and my friend Sarah Ezrin where we talk about teaching yoga, being moms and why we strengthen our nervous systems by visualizing our children falling from the monkey bars at playgrounds while performing pranayama techniques (not kidding!). Sarah started out working in the adrenaline-fueled film industry. Then, took that “hustle energy” into her yoga teacher career, resulting in burnout. After much heartbreak and loss, she wasn't sure she ever wanted children, but now applies ancient yogic wisdom to motherhood. This is a beautiful listen for any yoga teachers, prospective parents or those with kids at home. In today's episode of Talk Nerdy To Me, we're going to dive into the intersection of science and spirituality, the autonomic nervous system, why stress isn't actually as bad as you think, and one of the most powerful practices you can do right now to support your brain and body. Today I'm talking with Kristin Leal: a teacher, lecturer and body worker who travels the world with her MetaAnatomy trainings passionately sharing about the miracle of the human body and the liberating potential of both movement and stillness. She is the author of the books "The Yoga Fan” and “MetaAnatomy- A Modern Yogi's Practical Guide to the Physical and Energetic Anatomy of Your Amazing Body” which was called "smart and sassy" by Elena Brower and "a luscious resource" by Rod Stryker. Teaching for nearly 30 years, she has graduated thousands of teachers through her own 200 and 300-hr teacher trainings along with working for in person and virtual yoga training programs around the world. In 2021, she was invited to join the anatomy advisory team at Yoga Journal Magazine. These days you can find her in her new home in London, England writing books, studying in a nearby park full of swans and teaching virtually and producing offerings in her faux fur lined-plant and bone filled home yoga studio.Episode Resources: V.S. Ramachandran Quote: “The human brain is without any doubt the most complexly organized form of matter in the universe. The brain is made up of 100 billion nerve cells or neurons. Someone has calculated that the number of possible permutations and combinations of brain activity exceeds the number of elementary particles in the universe. And this gives you some idea of the staggering complexity one is faced with in trying to understand the functions of this mysterious organ. So the question is, "How do you even begin?"Click here to learn more about KristinClick here to join Kristin's Vagus Nerve MasterclassClick here to get Kristin's 20 Hour Nervous System Training and get 20% off with promo code: talknerdytomeGet Kristin's book MetaAnatomy hereFollow Kristin on InstagramIf you loved this episode, help us get it into more ears by leaving a 5 star review and subscribing on whatever platform you're listening on. “Ah, meditation and yoga, what a beautiful place to hide.”-Scott's ex-therapistWhile there's no denying that mindfulness can be a powerful tool, is it the answer to all of our problems, or is it really just a game of playing hide-and-seek from ourselves? In this episode Dr. Scott and Dr. Sará hilariously break down the complexity of mindfulness- differentiating toxic positivity and splashy bypassing from a path of profound connection to oneself and the full spectrum of human experiences. Dr. Scott and Dr. Sará lead by example, demonstrating how play can help you break free from the bondage of trauma as they approach this episode and life with full-on childhood curiosity and a willingness to let life unfold, providing you with the magic sauce of empowerment and deep healing. If you're looking for the kind of mindfulness that cultivates the resilience needed to be in the dance of life and feel a deep sense of belonging to the world while at the same time making you laugh so hard you pee (and question whether mindfulness and bladder control are related) - this episode of The Gently Used Human is for you.Topics we break down:Trauma bonding. The importance of play.Healing intergenerational trauma.Interdependence. Harmful narratives of the wellness industry. The shadow side of mindfulness.Connect with Dr. Sará King Dr. Sará King is a Mother, neuroscientist, political and learning scientist, education philosopher, social-entrepreneur, public speaker, and certified yoga and mindfulness meditation instructor. Today's conversation is with author and mindfulness teacher Rosie Acosta. Growing up in East LA in the 90s as a first-generation Mexican-American, Rosie suffered from agoraphobia, panic attacks, and anxiety. After being arrested a few times, at 16, she began to feel disillusioned with her family's unwavering Catholic faith and soon after discovered meditation and yoga, eventually leading her to her career as a yoga and meditation teacher. Since then, she's been featured in Yoga Journal, Forbes, The New York Post and more. Rosie and I met over five years ago when she visited Detroit with Yoga Journal Magazine. Is your spirit involved in your decision-making process or do you find yourself led by your mind? In today’s episode, I’m joined by mamapreneur and multi-passionate CEO Jocelyn Gordon for an unfiltered conversation about the importance of creating with intention. Jocelyn takes us through the process of how she started two successful companies, including an online yoga teacher training program and conscious conception consulting practice, from scratch, and what multi-passionate entrepreneurs must keep in mind in order to grow successfully. Jocelyn encourages us to consider the bigger picture when making our business decisions and bridges the parallels between entrepreneurship and the journey of motherhood. Called a "Yoga Rebel" by Yoga Journal Magazine, Jocelyn Gordon is known for her joyful integrations of dance, yoga, and meditation - HoopYogini™ and Bhakti Boogie Yoga. She has toured nationally with Wanderlust, is a six-time presenter at the Bali Spirit Festival, and has worked with Academy Award-winning actresses Halle Berry and Marisa Tomei. Jocelyn is a mother of two young queens and as a Conscious Conception Coach, she supports people considering parenting by helping them up-level their health and vibration before pregnancy. For this episode, I sat down with Judith Hanson Lasater. Judith has a Ph.D in East-West psychology, she’s a trained, Physical Therapist and has been teaching yoga since 1971. She trains students and teachers throughout the United States as well as abroad. She is the co-founder of Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco and a founder of the Yoga Journal magazine and is president of the California Yoga Teachers Association. She has written eight books, including her most recent one called: Restore and Rebalance: Yoga for Deep Relaxation.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE:1- Restorative yoga is remembering to be still every day. When we are still, silence arises. When silence arises, fear melts away. When fear melts away, there's space for spontaneous gratitude, joy, compassion and empathy. From there's an integration of our being.2- You can't force yourself to relax, but you can carve out 20 minutes a day to do nothing. Doing nothing is the best thing you can do for yourself. It's a radical thing. No music, no talking, no recording. Do it in a place you feel safe and it's quiet. 3- It will start to notice that your mind is a drunken monkey. Pay attention to the sensations of breaths and you'll create radical presence. Becoming aware of sensation is a practice of body-fulness on top of mind-fulness. 4- The body is always trying to reach out homeostasis. Stress is the most important disruptor of that state of homeostasis. Worrying is praying for what you don't want. so let's focus on what you don't want.Physiologically, it takes at least 15 min to relax, if you are well rested.5- The light is the most stimulating thing to the nervous system.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE :Can you define what is restorative yoga and explain what is special about it or different than other styles of yoga?Do you think it's a more meditative practice compare to other asana practices? What are the benefits, or positive effects of this practice? How do you take the weight of stress off the body? What are the stages of Savasana?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!DONATE OR BECOME AN EXCLUSIVE MEMBER TODAY.Thank you so much for listening and being part of our 58th episode! It remembers us back to the elements from which we are made, and upon which we are dependent. Like a reciprocal roof, which is a self-supporting structure, we lean on each other from all sides. Sometimes I question the merits of Yoga Journal Magazine. There are good ideas and inspirational sentiments to be found in this publication but it's difficult to separate from the not always so subtle inclination of effective advertising to exploit low self-esteem. Magazines depicting idealized notions of beauty that make us feel worse about ourselves is nothing new but, in the context of yoga, feels inappropriate…
Learn about four key areas you can do to positively impact your brain's health and resilience. In the March/April 2020 Yoga Journal Magazine, an article was written titled, "Mind Games." The author, Tasha Eichenseher wrote, "Resent research studies have demonstrated how yoga (i.e., asana, meditation, mantra, and mindfulness) can improve health and happiness. Now, scientists are uncovering how these practices can help prevent memory loss and delay the onset of more serious and scary cognitive impairments that often come with age." Listen in and find out how YOU can make small change to your daily routine positively affecting your brain's health and resilience.

For our 36th episode, I sat down with Ana Forrest and Jose Calarco. I never had the pleasure to practice live in person with them, but I love the importance and the attention to healing that Forest Yoga stands for. The intentions behind the practices are truly powerful and the spectrum of tools to get reconnected to the body, to the truth, and to move through our suffering is really making those practices much richer, and so I wanted to sit down with them to chat about what healing possibility yoga can offer us.5 BIGGEST TAKE AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE1. Your life is infinitely precious. Don't waste it. Thinking that you are not enough is a lie. Tend to your life force and to your spirit in a respectful and reverent way. When you act in a way that doesn't serve you, deep down you know, so stop. Instead do things that help you evolve.2. Yoga alone might not be enough to heal deep wounds. The body needs movement and action, the mind needs to be still, the emotions need expression and the spirit needs nourishment. 3. To be in integrity, you have to connect with all parts of yourself.4. There's a lot of suffering and anguish in the yoga community, but yogis need to understand that you don't have to suffer. You can get out of pain, heal your pain and start to live a life that you are proud of.5. When you set an intention for class, pick something inside of you that needs heeling.QUESTIONS THEY ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE :Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what was the vision behind starting Forrest Yoga?Integrity is a pillar of forest yoga. How do you teach it?I think that before we can even connect to our integrity we need to move out numbness and connect to our bodies, so we can listen better to what it’s trying to tell us. How do you approach that? Where can people start? Can you give examples of tools you give students to get out of pain and heal? How do you work with the breath?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!GIVEAWAY WINNER. For our 24th episode, I had the pleasure to sit down with Jill Miller. Jill is the creator of the self-care fitness formats Yoga Tune Up® and The Roll Model® Method. I first discovered Jill’s work about 5 years ago while looking for a way to heal a yoga injury. What I didn’t know at that moment was the profound impact this work was going to have to my life and my health.I suffer from endometriosis, and with March being the Endometriosis Awareness Month, I wanted to do an episode about one of the strategies that helped me deal with my symptoms. As an autoimmune disease it’s strongly affected by stress. Yoga Tune Up and the Roll Model Method have really helped me get a better understanding of my stress and gave me tools to down-regulate my nervous system so in turn, pain decreased pretty drastically. So I thought it would be a great way to talk about chronic pain management. As always, I really appreciate your support. "Don't Be At Battle With Your Body" Jill Miller What an honor to speak with longtime industry leader Jill Miller. In this conversation Jill shares her backstory of being overweight as a young child. She has experienced the bullying that comes along with not being a part of the "in" crowd, and talks about the pain that came with not fitting in. It was Jane Fonda Videos that her mother was working out to, that moved Jill from the couch to a life of exercise, but they also introduced her to a powerful way to control both her body and her life. Both Jill and I have struggled with body dysmorphia, and we touch on the eating disorders that consumed our life. Jill shares that her body was a symptom of the deep wounds that many of us experience growing up, and candidly opens up about her long journey back to true health and wellness. We discus how movement can either be a weapon or a powerful tool, and it is up to us to listen and honor our body. Jill shares her reasons for developing Yoga Tune Up® and The Roll Model® Method and the heart and hustle that was needed to get her knowledge into the world on a large scale. She talks about her desire for people to feel good and comfortable in their own bodies, and that this was the main inspiration for her to keep forging ahead. Jill was determined to create an adjunct way of treating and healing the body, one which could be used in tandem with any other type of movement. We talk about what it took for her "overnight" success: from her start when she was solo and traveling all over the country, city to city, studio to studio to today, where she now oversees more than 500 Yoga Tune Up Teachers. Jill talks about her methodology, which is a process based movement format that can work with any type of body. She shares the blind spots that we often have in our own body: Overuse, Underuse, Misuse or Confuse. We discuss what it takes to keep moving forward when you have people pushing against your beliefs and what it takes to let the the negativity slide away and to keep believing. Jill shares the importance of having cheerleaders who are rooting for you and that for Jill, many of her greatest supporters were her students and the Group Fitness Managers at Equinox. We wrap up the conversation talking about Jill’s recent hip replacement. At the time of this recording she was only Five weeks post operation. Jill shares the vulnerability and the lessons that have come through this pivotal moment in her career, and how she is determined to use this for good. She also realizes that she is much more than her "hip." Judith Hanson Lasater Ph.D., physical therapist, has been teaching yoga since 1971. Judith has written nine books and is one of the founders of Yoga Journal Magazine. I had many opportunities to interview Judith during my decade as an editor there, but this interview was so refreshingly different for me because I got to ask her whatever I wanted! She shared how she found yoga, the importance of following your intuition, and her tips for learning to communicate clearly. I have the utmost respect for Judith -- her body of work, her insight, her compassion and care for her students all shine through in this interview.
