Perhaps best known for working with the Polish Brothers on Northfork and Twin Falls Idaho, David Mullen has shot over 40 other independent feature films; Jennifer's Body and the Love Witch to name a few. David's resume also includes television series such as United States of Tara, West World, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.David is not only renowned for his work, but he also has a reputation for being an avid film nerd. In many ways, David's cinematographer education came from a hybrid of real world experience and film school. Before he was enrolled in CalArts, David had already mastered lighting and filming on Super 8mm cameras. He digested journals, magazines, almost any piece of literature that could give him the knowledge he needed to pursue this passion for photography.Join us as we talk to this 3-time Emmy Winner and a 2-time ASC Award Winner about how he got started in this chaotic world of cinema and pick his brain about the wealth of knowledge he's collected during his career.Let us know if we're doing a shitty job.Support the show

Globalism is here and so few see it enough to understand it or see the dangers of it. I can see it, and hear it and have read it and people need to know the dangers of this agenda. Globalism has many facts to it but each and every one has critical components that work to incrementaly enslave humanity. In this episode we talk about the Lava Ridge Wind farm project and the fact that this is a global phenomenon. Of course it is global, control requires a global entity and global support!
I'm always looking for indie filmmaking models to study. I like to analyze how other filmmakers make successful indie films while doing through a new DIY method, self distributing their film or achieving critical and fan respect for their work.Well I found a film that checks all the boxes, For Lovers Only create by the Polish Brothers, Michael and Mark Polish (more on that film later). These filmmakers have been making films, on their terms, for over a decade now.Since premiering at Sundance with their debut feature, 1999's Twin Falls Idaho, the brothers have remained steadfast in their commitment to creating personal, character-driven films. How does one make money shooting a feature film on a DSLR? The film in question came from a screenplay that Mark Polish wrote more than a decade ago called For Lovers Only, about an American photographer who runs into an old flame while on assignment in Paris. The film follows the rekindled lovers around Paris, France in a series of quiet vignettes that gradually reveal more about the complications in the couples' lives.Related: DSLR Video Tips: How to Make Your DSLR Film or Video Look More CinematicInspired by the guerilla style of the French New Wave filmmakers of yesteryear, Mark and Michael Polish came up with a simple plan: they'd fly over to France with only a Canon 5D Mark II camera (which they already owned) and one actress (Castle star Stana Katic) in tow and just go out and shoot feature film. Oh did I mention it was in black and white?Michael Polish sat down with me for an amazing interview about his filmmaking life, Hollywood and what it means to be an artist.
This week on 99... Phil and Kenny talk amongst themselves about Twin Falls Idaho! We talk about the promising talent on display from the Polish Brothers, the movie's de-emphasis on plot, instead focusing in on character, and due to the state of the indie movement in 99, the film feels lost to time.Twitter: twitter.com/podcastlikeits Instagram: instagram.com/podcastlikeits Reddit: reddit.com/r/podcastlikeits Hosted on Acast. One advantage to being a serial entrepreneur is that you're probably going to seize upon the next great idea way before anyone else really knows anything about it because you walk around with your antennae up all the time. Well, that's how Twin Falls Idaho got 2nd South Market and how Dave Buddecke got his next entrepreneurial challenge. The food hall is not a new concept. But in its current incarnation they seem to be popping up all over the place. In some markets maybe a few too many. But the basic premise is to offer a variety of food, beverages and sometimes entertainment under one roof. There's no one model that everyone is trying to emulate. And that's a good thing because what works in one building in one city wont necessarily work in the next city or neighborhood. 2nd South Market – Twin Falls, Idaho Music; Totally Looped – Audionautix #diageobaracademy
This week, we venture into our first "art" film on this podcast, The Polish Brothers' debut feature, Twin Falls Idaho. We talk about the challenges that the twin brothers faced when it came to making their film independently, how they managed to pull off the "conjoined-twin" aspect of the film without using CGI, and Andrew still hates Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This is a long one, so enjoy! Next week: the Kevin Costner-led sports film For Love of the Game. The attacks by the republicans are far more fierce than ones from BLM, ANTIFA or even the Democrats, Ever ask why? Is it because the republicans that call themselves "true conservatives" have more in common with them than us? This is a commentary that began as a rebuttal to his scathing letter in the Times-News July 26, 2020 where he attacks lovers of liberty and sadly, this is podcast is the only way to clear our name or at least have others consider our perspective. It is also to help address in detail the fight Idaho has had and currently has as we, one of the last states where people can go to seek asylum from others states, are fighting for our lives and our freedom facing those calling themselves "true conservatives." If you are new to Idaho, we welcome you and encourage you to join the fight. Also consider yourself informed of our plight.

Why do we garden? This was a question that was posted in a Facebook group I belong to, and it received over 1400 responses. The most popular were: its calming to bring beauty into my life to connect with nature healthy food There's another benefit that many people often overlook: staying physically active. If you take a look at your Fitbit after spending time in your garden, you'll realize it's a workout. Brevities #OTD It's the birthday of Charles McIlvaine born in Chester County Pennsylvania. He was a captain in the Civil War, an author and a mycologist. He was born on this day in 1840. When he was 40 years old, McIlvaine moved to West Virginia. He started writing for magazines like Centuryand Harpers. However, McIlvaine is best known for his study of mushrooms. He took copious notes which he compiled into his book called, 1,000 American Fungi. What most distinguished McIlvaine, is the fact that he experimented on himself; eating hundreds of mushrooms and toadstools. This is how McIlvaine came to be known as Old Iron Guts. Since McIlvaine had a love for writing before he had a love for mushrooms, when he wrote about mushrooms his language was often very flowery. Consider what McIlvaine wrote about the Oyster Mushroom: "The camel is gratefully called the ship of the desert. The oyster mushroom is the shellfish of the forest. When the tender parts are dipped in egg, rolled in bread crumbs, and fried as an oyster, they're not excelled buy any vegetable and are worth of place on the daintiest menu." Here's the Vomiting Russella: "Most are sweet and nutty to the taste. Some are as hot as the fiercest cayenne, but this they lose upon cooking. Their caps make the most palatable dishes when stewed, baked, roasted or escalloped.” Finally, I have to share a poem that McIlvaine wrote called Our Church Fight. "I'm that nigh near disgusted with the fight in our old church, Where one halfs 'g'in the t'other, an' the Lord's left in the lurch, That I went an' told the parson if he'd jine me in a prayer, We'd slip out 'mong the daisies and' put one up from there." #OTD On this day in1920, Virginia Woolf was gardening with her husband, Leonard, at the new home they had bought the previous year. She wrote about it in her diary: "The first pure joy of the garden... Weeding all day to finish the beds in a queers sort of enthusiasm which made me say this is happiness. Gladioli standing in troops; the mock orange out. We were out till 9 at night, though the evening was cold. Both stiff and scratched all over today, with chocolate earth in our nails." #OTD It's the death day of naturalist, artist, and taxidermist, Martha Ann Maxwell who died on this day in 1881. She helped found modern taxidermy. At just 5 feet tall Maxwell became an accomplished hunter. One historian wrote, "What distinguished Martha from other taxidermists of the day was that Martha Maxwell always attempted to place stuffed animals in natural poses and amongst natural surroundings. This talent was what would separate her work from others and make her animals so popular with exhibitors and viewers alike.” People who saw Martha's exhibits of Colorado wildlife, doubted that a woman had actually done the work. Martha had heard these comments over and over. At one point, she wrote the words "Woman's Work" on a small sign and placed it in front of her exhibit. Unearthed Words #OTD Today is the birthday of Walt Whitman who was born on this day in 1819. When Whitman was 54 years old, he suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed. He spent the next two years immersed in nature and he believed that nature head help to heal him. "How it all nourishes, lulls me, in the way most needed; the open air, the rye-fields, the apple orchards.” Here's an excerpt from Whitman's Poem called This Compost: "Now I am terrified at the earth! it is that calm and patient, It grows such sweet things out of such corruptions, It turns harmless and stainless on its axis, with such endless successions of diseased corpses, It distills such exquisite winds out of such infused fetor, It renews with such unwitting looks, its prodigal, annual, sumptuous crops, It gives such divine materials to men, and accepts such leavings from them at last." Today's book recommendation: No One Gardens Alone: A Life of Elizabeth Lawrence by Emily Herring Wilson Lawrence was one of the premier gardeners and garden writers of the 20th Century. Little is known about her personal life until this book - which took the author over 10 years to complete. You can get a copy of this book on Amazon using the link above for a little over $3. Today's Garden Chore It's another Photo Friday in the Garden. It's time to take a hosta inventory, recording the hostas that you've forgotten you even had in your garden. Something Sweet Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart In May 1979, Dr. Calvin Lamborn bread snow peas and shelling English peas together to create the Sugar Snap Pea at Magic Seed Farm in Twin Falls Idaho Today, the farm is owned by Rod Lamborn, Dr. Lamborn's son. When Dr. Lamborn passed away in 2017, Rod took over the farm. He said, "I miss my father. I remember the night he died, I came in from the field and I was talking about the peas, and for the first time, he wasn’t interested. It was a peaceful moment because he knew it was all right. He was like, ‘You got this.’ ” Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
