Seit ein paar Tagen steht auch fest, wo die Buchpremiere stattfinden wird: Am 3. Juni um 20 Uhr sehen wir uns im Frannz Club Berlin! Bei mir zu Gast: Isabell Eberlein von velokonzept und Hanna Bauer von Schindelhauer Bikes. Natürlich konnten wir nicht über Lastenräder sprechen, ohne auf die erhitzte Debatte rund um die Sicherheit von Kindern in Lastenrädern zu blicken. Erfreulicherweise sind mittlerweile wieder ein Drittel aller Kinder mit dem Rad unterwegs. Davon einige auch im Lastenrad. Und auch wenn die Gesamtzahl der verkauften Lastenräder anteilig am Fahrradmarkt gemessen eher nischig ist (2023 wurden 235.250 Lastenräder neu gekauft), entspricht die Empörung, die manche gegenüber dieser Radform zu empfinden in der Lage sind fast dem Hass auf Sharing-E-Scooter. Beiden gemein: Sie lenken mit der Wut, die ihnen entgegenschlägt, unfreiwillig vom eigentlichen Problem ab: 49, 1 Millionen Pkw in Deutschland - und damit der mit Abstand größten CO2-Quelle im Verkehrssektor. Der aktuellen Empörung vorausgegangen war ein Skandal rund um die zuvor aufgrund ihrer vergleichsweise niedrigen Preise beliebten Lastenrad-Marke Babboe aus den Niederlanden. Hier wurden durch die niederländische Behörde NVWA massive Sicherheitsmängel festgestellt, nachdem zuletzt vermehrt Rahmenbrüche aufgetreten waren. Hier ist Isabell ganz klar: Fahrräder müssen wie alles andere, was auf der Straße bewegt wird, sicher für Nutzer:innen und Umgebung sein. Dennoch ist sie im Gespräch mit mir auch anderweitig ganz klar: Der aktuelle "Skandal", der eine Untersuchung der Unfallversicherer nutzt, um Lastenräder als gefährlich für Kinder darzustellen, ist ebenso unzulässig. Zumal die UDV selbst in der Studie hervorhebt: Nach den für 2022 verfügbaren Zahlen ereigneten sich in Deutschland 222 Unfälle, zwölf Kinder wurden dabei schwer verletzt. Unfallgegner bei Radunfällen mit mitfahrenden Kindern ist laut UDV meist ein Auto. Zum Vergleich: Wie das Statistische Bundesamt (Destatis) mitteilt, kamen 2022 25 800 Kinder unter 15 Jahren bei Unfällen im Straßenverkehr zu Schaden, Im Schnitt wurde alle 20 Minuten ein Kind bei einem Verkehrsunfall verletzt oder getötet. 51 Kinder überlebten die Kollisionen nicht. DESTATIS weiter: Unter 6-Jährige sind oft im Auto mit betreuenden Erwachsenen unterwegs, dem zufolge verunglücken sie hier am häufigsten. Schulkinder sind mit zunehmendem Alter selbstständig im Straßenverkehr unterwegs. 6- bis 14-Jährige verunglückten am häufigsten auf ihrem eigenen Fahrrad (42 %), 28 % in einem Auto sowie 21 % zu Fuß. Hanna Brauer hat sich einer anderen Facette des Lastenrads gewidmet. Die Nachhaltigkeits-Managerin untersuchte in ihrer 237-seitigen Bachelor-Arbeit, inwieweit aktuelle Lastenräder den Anforderungen von verschiedenen Nutzer:innengruppen entsprechen. Größtes Problem: Meist wird so ein Rad im Laden gekauft, ohne dass Gepäck, Kind, Abdeckung.. im Praxistest im und am Rad untergebracht werden. Daher wünschen sich auch viele nach ihrem ersten Lastenradkauf: "Ich hätte mir das Rad gern mal eine Woche ausgeliehen, um alles daran zu testen!" Hanna hat hier die Herangehensweise der Nutzer:innenbeobachtung angewandt. So entstand ein Anforderungskatalog für Lastenrad-Design mit zehn 10 Schwerpunkten, die von Hanna jeweils mit praktischen Beispielen hinterlegt worden sind. Besonderes Augenmerk von Hanna liegt dabei auf den nicht-körperlichen Merkmalen, die sich aus den etablierten Gesellschaftsstrukturen und den traditionell verankerten Genderrollen ergeben.

The focus of this talk concerns Dr. Grob's work with ayahuasca users in Brazil. As far as I know, this was the first government approved human study of the physiological effects of ayahuasca on humans. This study compared 15 long-term ayahuasca drinkers with healthy individuals and found that UDV members had lower levels of anxiety and many had overcome alcohol abuse. Another study by Grob and Dartiu Xavier Silveira compared 40 adolescent ayahuasca drinkers with non-drinkers. The research showed positive outcomes, such as reduced alcohol consumption among UDV teenagers and improved mood, self-acceptance, and interpersonal relationships in participants. Thirty years ago today, President Bill Clinton signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) into law. It was a monumental event in religious liberty law at the time, and it remains part of an even more complex legal landscape of religious exemptions today. Amanda Tyler and Holly Hollman look at the standard set by RFRA and discuss how the law has been used in cases dealing with issues ranging from sacramental drug use to application of health insurance regulations. Most of those who have engaged in the psychedelic experience can attest to some sort of mystical experience taking place. Even with that happening it doesn't always bring one close to religion. Why is that?  Walter Houston Clark has defined "religion" as an individual's inner experience of a Beyond, especially as evidenced by active attempts to harmonize his or her life with that Beyond. The Johns Hopkins experiments suggest that a large fraction of mentally healthy people with spiritual interests can have a profound experience of a Beyond—a mystical-type experience—with the aid of several hours' preparation and a supervised psilocybin session. Furthermore, most of the study volunteers report that encounter as among the most spiritually significant of their lives and as bringing sustained benefits. How do we get from such experiences (however occasioned) to "religion" in Clark's sense, and in the sense of a group pursuing spiritual ends? Perhaps that transition is, as Brother David Steindl-Rast claims, inevitable. The talk will address that process, and will argue that some social organizations have strong but unacknowledged religious aspects.  Robert Jesse is Convenor of the Council on Spiritual Practices (CSP; csp.org). CSP's interest in non-ordinary states focuses on the betterment of well people, in contrast to the medical-model treatment of patients with psychiatric diagnoses. Through CSP, Bob was instrumental in forming the psilocybin research team at Johns Hopkins University, and he has co-authored three of its scientific papers. He also lead the writing of an amicus brief for the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the União do Vegetal's use of a sacramental tea containing DMT, a controlled substance. A unanimous Court upheld the UDV's right to its practice. Bob has long participated in the development of the Bay Area spiritual community that draws liberally from the non-creedal, non-hierarchical ways of the Quakers (the Religious Society of Friends). His formal training is in electrical engineering and computer science.

When it comes to plant based medicine, my guest on today's podcast is widely considered to be a groudbreaking pioneer. His name is Dennis McKenna. Dennis's research - spanning back to the 1970's - has focused on the interdisciplinary study of Amazonian ethnopharmacology and plant hallucinogens. During the early 1970's, he developed a technique for cultivating psilocybin mushrooms with his brother Terence McKenna and they later published what they had learned in a book entitled . Dennis has conducted extensive ethnobotanical fieldwork in the Peruvian, Colombian, and Brasilian Amazon. His doctoral research (University of British Columbia, 1984) focused on the ethnopharmacology of ayahuasca and oo-koo-he, two tryptamine-based hallucinogens used by indigenous peoples in the Northwest Amazon. He is a founding board member of the Heffter Research Institute, and was a key organizer and participant in the Hoasca Project, the first biomedical investigation of ayahuasca used by the UDV, a Brazilian religious group. He is currently Assistant Professor in the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota.
