We are gearing up for a special event - People Like Me - a two-day immersive retreat focused on building intercultural competency, strengthening inclusive leadership, and helping churches reflect the rich diversity of their communities. Led by our very own, Rev. Katrena King, our Conference's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Specialist, the retreat offers tools like the Intercultural Development Inventory, also known as the IDI - it will also include space for authentic storytelling, which will be done in a very unique way – and workshops on everything from tough conversations to vision casting. And that brings us to our guest. Samuel Rodriguez is the Director of Congregational Development for the Illinois Great Rivers Conference. For over 27 years, he's been helping churches plant, grow, and thrive—especially in multicultural and multi-ethnic contexts. He will be the special guest at People Like Me. Join us for a conversation about why events like People Like Me matter—and how the future of the Church depends on the kind of work he and Katrena will be doing in Woodworth.

This Lent, ponder the themes of justice, poverty, freedom, and love. The four New Testament Gospels aren't the same story, but they offer the same Resurrection hope. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John devote most of their story detailing Jesus' last week in Jerusalem, all highlighting Jesus' triumphant entry into the city, the suffering and humiliation of the cross, and the empty tomb come Sunday morning, but the stories they tell aren't quite the same. Each Gospel offers a different lens through which we understand Jesus' Passion. One portrait reveals Jesus to be in control, while another emphasizes his suffering. In one story Jesus offers hope to the thief on the cross, and in another Jesus only receives derision. These different perspectives aren't a reason to dismiss the Gospels; rather they reveal an abundant, diverse, and complementary picture of God's work in the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Pastor Paul discusses the need for this shift and its significance, drawing from data and examples. We explore four key inversions:1. Moving from United Methodism to Global Methodism, emphasizing a return to Gospel-centered values.2. Transitioning from "Developing Leaders" to "Developing Disciples" and the importance of discipleship.3. Shifting from "Merely Teaching" to "Actively Training," highlighting the value of practical equipping.4. Wisdom Wednesday: The Methodist Story

Grace and peace to you. I'm Rev. Joe Cailles, the pastor of Peakland United Methodist Church in Lynchburg Virginia. Today is Wednesday, October 25, 2023 Peakland United Methodist Church is reading this book, Being a United Methodist Christian which explores our beliefs, our best practices and our history as a United Methodist Christian. This week we're reading chapter 3 of the book, Our United Methodist Story! Our Methodist story begins with Rev. John Wesley, a priest in the church of England who started the Methodist movement nearly 300 years ago at Oxford University with a small group of likeminded folks who were so dedicated to their Bible studies, prayer, and service to those in needs that other mocked them with the name Methodist. I spoke last week about Wesley's misadventures as a parish priest in the new American town of Savannah, Georgia. At the start of 1738, John was back in England and at his lowest professionally and spiritually. He doubted his effectiveness as a priest, and he doubted that his faith was genuine. In the evening of May 24, 1738, John Wesley went reluctantly to a Methodist meeting at Aldersgate Street in London. He heard a reading from the preface of Martin Luther's commentary of the book of Romans. Wesley later wrote, “About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation, and an assurance was given me that he had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death." Friends, a couple of days ago, I re-read the preface to Martin Luther's commentary to the book of Romans. I know beyond a doubt there is a God in heaven because the preface to Martin Luther's commentary on the book of Romans is the most theologically dense and surprisingly dry writing that only God could have warmed Wesley's heart with those words. Wow. With his heart strangely and wonderfully warmed John Wesley's methodist movement grew and grew throughout Great Britain and into the American colonies. In December 1784, the methodist in America established the Methodist Episcopal Church, the first American born Christian denomination. Under the leadership of Francis Asbury, the Methodists in American grew and grew. Famous Methodists of the 19th century include. Richard Allen, a black American methodist who established the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1816 after facing discrimination in the white methodist church and Thomas B Welch, a methodist minister and dentist, who in 1869 created Methodist Unfermented Communion Wine. Commonly known as grape juice. As the American nation grew so did the Methodists. As American divided on the issues of slavery, so did the Methodists who split into northern and southern branches in 1845. Through the 20th century Methodists united with other denominations forming the current United Methodist Church today. Marjorie Matthews was the first woman elected as a United Methodist bishop in 1980. Now in the 21st century, the United Methodist Church is the largest of all the methodist denominations with something like 12 million members worldwide. The fastest growing area of United Methodism is now in Africa. The newest methodist denomination is the Global Methodist Church formed by methodists who want to maintain traditional practices in marriage and ordination. Pastor Dave Drinkard preached at Peakland this past Sunday, and he reminded us that throughout our history, we United Methodists are at our best, when we love God and when we love our neighbors. We worship together and we nurture our Christian faith together and we serve Christ together out in the world. That's what we're doing at Peakland, and you are welcome to join and learn and experience what it means being a United Methodist Christian.

West End UMC Podcast Audio Podcast

We continue reading the Bible with a passage from Exodus 33 wherein Moses and God are conversing, and Moses asks God for reassurances about the mission God has directed him to do. Moses asks to see God's “glory,” and God hides him in a crevice and passes before him, not allowing Moses to see God's face. The Rev. Dr. Derek Weber, Director of Preaching Ministries in United Methodism's Discipleship Ministries division, is the guest preacher. Derek begins by giving his personal historic connection to the church, as he is descended from Fountain Pitts, West End's first appointed minister. Pitts was an officer in the Confederate army and a slave owner, and he was a gifted preacher. The quest for Moses to see God's glory with God denying a glimpse at the divine face means that Moses, in God's service, turns out to be the face of God, and Derek presses us to examine our church and ourselves to see how we serve as the face of God. Much as the slavery in our history may be distasteful to us now, it is our mission under God to reinterpret God's mission for us and to serve as the face of God so that when others see us carrying out that mission, they will see God's face in our faith and actions.

It's Friday, October 14th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Nigerian Muslims killed 3 Christians On Tuesday, October 4, Muslim militants murdered three Christians in an attack in northeastern Nigeria, reports International Christian Concern. The Christians lived in Njilang village, located in Chibok County. During the attack, the Muslims burned multiple houses and businesses to the ground and wounded dozens more residents.  Nigeria led the world in Christians killed for their faith last year. Between October 1, 2020 and Sept. 30, 2021, 4,650 Nigerian Christians were martyred for their faith, up from 3,530 the previous year. That's according to Open Doors' 2022 World Watch List report. Revelation 6:9 says, “When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the Word of God and the testimony they had maintained.” Supreme Court denies Donald Trump On Thursday, the Supreme Court rejected former President Donald Trump's plea to step into the legal fight over the FBI search of his Florida estate, reports the Associated Press. The justices did not otherwise comment in turning away Trump's emergency appeal. The Trump team was asking the justices to overturn a lower court ruling and permit an independent arbiter to review the roughly 100 documents with classified markings that were taken in the August 8 search of Mar-a-Lago. Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones ordered to pay $1 billion Jurors ordered conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Wednesday to pay nearly $1 billion to Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims' relatives and an FBI agent, who said he turned their loss and trauma into years of torment by promoting the lie that the rampage was a hoax, reports the Associated Press. The $965 million verdict is the second big judgment against the Infowars host for spreading the myth that the deadliest school shooting at the hands of Adam Lanza, in which 20 first graders and six adults were killed in the 2012 Connecticut massacre, never happened. Jones claimed that the grieving families seen in news coverage were actors hired as part of a plot to take away people's guns. America rejects the sodomite Superman DC Comics has announced it will axe a recent comic book series that was centered on a sodomite Superman. In the months after Jonathan Kent, son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, made his debut in July 2021, the 17-year-old character embraced various social issues, including school shootings, fighting global warming deniers and the deportation of illegal immigrants. Then, in the series' fifth issue, Jon Kent began a homosexual relationship with a male friend and refugee 'hacktivist' Jay Nakamura. But, just like the box office flop entitled Bros, which was America's first romantic comedy featuring a homosexual storyline, the comic book sales were disastrous. The Washington Examiner's headline was instructive. “Go woke, go broke: DC's gay Superman canceled after 18 issues and poor sales.” Their first line was punchy. “People aren't buying Superman's new sexuality— literally.” The Worldview wonders whether the creators of the sodomite Superman will blame America's so-called “homophobia” instead of recognizing the vestige of our Christian heritage. Superman's image has been seemingly eviscerated. This foolish exploration of sexual perversion comes on top of last fall's woke decision to change Superman's slogan from "truth, justice, and the American way" to "truth, justice, and a better tomorrow." Drag queen talks with kids and delivers sermon in church And finally, you can't make this stuff up.  It was bad enough that the God-haters, who wanted to twist His design for our sex and our sexuality, invited drag queens into libraries to read to impressionable children. Now, a reprobate pastor, Andy Oliver, at Allendale Methodist Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, invited Isaac Simmons, who performs in drag as “Ms. Penny Cost,” to interact with the children (at the 25:50 mark of the video) and deliver the sermon (at the 43:58-mark) on October 2. His reason? Because he wants “all people to see people like themselves called by God to preach the Gospel,” reports The Christian Post. Clearly, the moniker, “Ms. Penny Cost,” is a disturbing and disrespectful reference to the day of Pentecost when Jesus Christ sent the Holy Spirit after the ascension, While Pastor Oliver introduced the drag queen to two children sitting on the altar steps, he said this. OLIVER: “'Ms. Penny Cost,' are you always dressed up like this? Do you always dress up?” SIMMONS: “I wish! No, I only get dressed up on special occasions. Um. I kind of feel powerful when I put on a dress like this and a big wig and lots of makeup. Um. Kind of helps me to say things that I don't have the confidence to say outside of it.” When Pastor Oliver asked about the drag queen's faith, Simmons, who had not grown up in a Christian home, made this remark. SIMMONS: “When I got to college, I started asking deeper questions, um, and I found a boy that I loved (laughs) and he invited me to church, and so I went to hang out with him.” As he twisted the words of Apostle Paul in Romans 12:2, Pastor Oliver gave his full endorsement of the drag queen's ministry, as Simmons is a first-year seminary student who will one day preach weekly in a Methodist pulpit. OLIVER: “Well, one of the things I think is great about ‘Ms. Penny Cost' is she reminds us that we follow a God who calls us to not conform to things of this world, that we're supposed to be transformed by the renewal of our minds. And that means that what I think today may have to change tomorrow pf I continue to renew my mind. It's so cool that we serve a God that calls us to continue to grow and continue to change into something new, and to not be bound by the ways that the world confines us sometimes, that we're supposed to live differently.” In a Facebook post, Pastor Oliver wrote that Simmons was “an incredible preacher, grounded as Allendale is, in Wesleyan and liberation theology.” But Mark Tooley, the president of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, believes drag queens, like Simmons, are becoming the “new public face of United Methodism.” Tooley said, “To my knowledge, no United Methodist official, including Simmons' bishop, has publicly expressed concern about this United Methodist drag queen." No wonder the Methodist church is imploding! Deuteronomy 22:5 declares, “A woman shall not wear a man's garment, nor shall a man put on a woman's cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Friday, October 14th, in the year of our Lord 2022. Catechism - it's a word you probably haven't heard much in Methodist circles, but it's a word that has been vital to other Christian traditions. We might think of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, for example, which provides the doctrinal foundation for some Reformed churches. For millions of Christians, a catechism has been an important tool for understanding and living out the Christian faith in line with Christians across time and space.   After all, that's what "catechism" means: instruction. It's a shorthand way for teaching the faith to people of all ages--a way that can be learned, digested, and committed to memory as a guide for the Christian life and a guard against false teaching.   John Wesley loved the Shorter Catechism, even offering a revised version of it for the people called Methodist. But much of Methodism, and particularly United Methodism, hasn't had a catechism of its own that draws together our doctrines into a teachable form. Until now, that is.   The Global Methodist Church recently released a catechism for the new denomination. Put together by a diverse team of scholars, pastors, and laity, this catechism offers the church a gift of clarity and a tool for teaching what we believe. Dr. Jason Vickers, Professor of Theology at Asbury Seminary, led this team and he joins host Bob Kaylor for this episode to talk about all things catechetical.   Read The Catechism of the Global Methodist Church    Send your comments and questions to podcast@wesleyancovenant.org and follow us on Twitter @WCAPod.    For more information about the Global Methodist Church, check out the web site.

One of the hallmarks of United Methodism is the nuanced way that John Wesley both embraced human free will and God's grace. Both God's power and human will are necessary for salvation. Yes, we get to choose. But only because God's power makes our choice possible. Before we even knew there was a choice to make, eve as soon as we were born, God was hard at work drawing, luring us, convincing us to choose faith in Jesus.

However, her vocational story within the Methodist tradition began in 2009 as a layperson invited to serve in Church Development for the Indiana Conference. This journey eventually led her to answer the call to ordination and three appointments to serve the local church in a multi-area, multi-ethnic charge in Indianapolis. During her tenure in Indiana, Rev. Williams resourced more than 200 congregations in both English and Spanish speaking contexts, she helped launch and lead conference strategies for transformational ministry with new and existing faith communities; and she became a sought-after leader among the network of developers and general agency partners across the Connection.

The Wesleyan Quadrilateral or the Methodist Quadrilateral as it is sometimes called, contains: Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience. And this theological doctrine is at the core of United Methodism. Although the “Wesleyan Quadrilateral” is not a term that was ever used by Wesley himself, it is clear that his theological method falls into this framework. The framework asserts that Scripture should always be seen as the primary and supreme source that is held above tradition, experience, and reason. These four sources help to enhance the theological understanding and doctrine of the United Methodist Church. Inspiration to call forth your creative spirit awaits. Listen now. 0:33        "Imagine Strong and Prophetic Leadership," by HiRho Y. Park, Executive Director of Clergy Lifelong Learning & the United Methodist Church’s Cyber Campus. 0:44        Oneness is something that many United Methodists are striving to understand as a worldwide church, especially what that means in the midst of gender, racial/ethnic, cultural, economic, and theological diversity among clergy leadership in the church. United Methodist clergywomen gathered two days prior to the World Methodist Council, (WMC) August 29-31, 2016, exploring the theme: “Birthing the Worldwide Church,” and engaging women leaders of the World Methodist Council (WMC). The gathering was held at the Hilton-Americas Hotel and Conference Center in Houston, Texas. 1:26        This Global United Methodist Clergywomen Gathering encouraged UM clergywomen to learn from each other in a variety of ministry settings and locations, an opportunity to envision, articulate, and participate in leading the worldwide church as women clergy. Gathered UM clergywomen across the world discussed what excites them about future global ministry opportunities and what would be the greatest global challenges facing UM clergywomen in the future. This special gathering strengthened networks of international relationships among UM clergywomen and other Methodist leaders, and most of all, we imagined a model of being a global church as women. 2:14        Let me share with you some history of UMC clergywomen. First, we have much to celebrate. In 2006, UM clergywomen celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of full clergy rights for women in the Methodist tradition. The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry organized the celebration in Chicago, Illinois. During our gathering in 2016, we celebrated sixty years of full clergy rights for women in the Methodist tradition and twenty years of ordained deacons in United Methodism. Deacons in the United Methodist Church are ordained to a ministry of Word, Service, Compassion, and Justice whereas elders are ordained to Word, Sacrament, Order and Service. 3:04        In 1956, there were 27 Methodist clergywomen who received full clergy rights. By 2014, the number of UM clergywomen had grown to 11, 388 active and 2,525 retired clergywomen, among a total of 54,474 UM clergy as of 2016, which means women account for 27 percent of all clergy. The number of female clergy grew 25 percent since 1992. 3:41        The number of lead women pastors serving churches with membership of one thousand or more has grown to 137 clergywomen as of 2012, compared to 64 in 2008. This is 114 percent growth within just four years. 4:01        The number of young clergywomen is growing also; 6 percent of elders are under the age of 35, 39 percent of those are female. Seventy-five percent of all ordained deacons are young clergywomen as of 2014. According to the recent report from the Lewis Center, “Young Clergy Numbers Grow among Clergywomen,” in the last ten years, the number of young clergywomen elders has increased 10 percent (31 percent in 2005, 41 percent in 2015), the highest in the history of The United Methodist Church. The number of young ordained deacons who are women has increased 12 percent (68 percent in 2012, 80 percent in 2015 of all ordained deacons). Women local pastors represent a quarter of the entire number of the group. 4:47        Along with the celebration, we have challenges to address, and we did. There are only 12 active female bishops in the entire UM connection, 10 in the United States and two in the Central Conferences as of 2015.  In 2016, we elected seven more women bishops including four African American women bishops.  Now we have 17 active women bishops since two women bishops retired.  5:18        Since then, 350 United Methodist clergywomen of Africa and 150 Filipina United Methodist clergywomen gathered in 2018 to affirm women’s leadership in the Church and society and to seek gender justice and equity within the church system.  There will be two US based Southeast and South Central regional leadership development conferences of United Methodist clergywomen in 2019.  5:58        What does this all mean to The United Methodist Church? If this is “feminization of clergy leadership” in the church, what does that look like in the future? Here, I use the word feminization from the perspective of women advancing in ecclesial leadership and, of course, not supporting misogyny within Christianity. 6:21        How does women’s clergy leadership make a difference, especially when we are becoming, more and more, a worldwide church? There will be no simple answers to these questions. However, I believe that the time is ripe for United Methodist clergywomen to explore responses to these questions. The Global UM Clergywomen Gathering in 2016 was the perfect opportunity to do so. 6:47        We raised scholarships for those who receive minimum salaries and serve in Central Conferences since we wanted as many as UM clergywomen and seminarians as possible to be a part of this historic gathering in 2016.  As a result, we were able to host 450 United Methodist clergywomen from 27 countries around the world speaking six different languages.  7:15        Let us pray for one another across the globe so that United Methodist clergywomen not only imagine strong and prophetic leadership for the future but also take actions to implement those dreams for younger generations of women! 7:33     Thank you for listening to the WellSprings Journal podcast. Right now the contemporary church, from the realm of United Methodism to conservative evangelicalism, is struggling. The church struggles, in large part, because of our failure to recognize how we are bound to God and not to the world – such that many churches take their theological cues from the powers and principalities and assert them on scripture, rather than the other way around. It is precisely why our divisions are growing wider and our walls are growing taller.

Bishop Mike is a genuine and authentic leader of the church who has been able to navigate some very sensitive issues in Indiana as well as around the world of United Methodism. The conversation was far ranging touching on the state of the church as he sees it right now - what he calls a ?Big Tent Church? that's being stretched by significant challenges as well as his view of the impact of the local church when its at its best. Indeed, Bishop Mike very much considers himself a pastor, first and foremost. Bishop Mike gives his observations about the global church in places like Eastern Europe and Africa as well as the state of the church in North America. He talks about the advice he might give to a brand-new bishop and to younger clergy who are just starting out. You will find Bishop Mike to be very hopeful about the future of the church particularly because of the influx of younger clergy and the influence of devoted laypersons. Bishop Mike also reveals the two issues which he considers key for the future of the United Methodist Church ?nimbleness? and ?partnerships.? In addition to all this Bishop Mike also talks about what he is looking forward to most in his retirement. You will find this episode 017 of the Hoosier United Methodist Podcast helpful to understanding the person who has led the United Methodist Church in Indiana for 12 years and certainly is beneficial to Hoosier United Methodists.
