In our Women in Tech takeover, guest host Sheryl Miles speaks to Professor Danielle George, Professor of Electronic Engineering and Associate Vice President at The University of Manchester, all about career longevity.
Host Elizabeth Newall welcomes Professor Dan George, Professor Jane Mooney and Professor Caroline Bowsher from the University of Manchester to discuss the work they have been doing to support digital transformation as part of Manchester's Flexible Learning Programme. In this episode of our mini-series on demonstrating digital transformation, Elizabeth Newall, senior sector specialist in the higher education and research directorate at Jisc, is joined by representatives of the Flexible Learning Programme (FLP) at the University of Manchester: Professor Dan George, associate vice president for blended and flexible learning, Professor Caroline Bowsher, university academic theme lead for the digital learning environment and Professor Jane Mooney, university academic theme lead for digital skills and literacy. Jisc recently hosted a demonstrating digital transformation event at the University of Manchester, and in this podcast we'll hear more about the work that Dan, Caroline and Jane have been doing to support digital transformation as part of Manchester's Flexible Learning Programme. The conversation begins with Dan sharing the University of Manchester's definition of flexible learning and the origins of the Flexible Learning Programme. Dan explains how the university's current strategy set them on a path towards increased student choice to enable their offering to be flexible by design and flexible by delivery. Jane follows this up by describing how Jisc's resources, such as the digital transformation framework and maturity model which they have recently piloted, have supported them in the Flexible Learning Programme. Caroline discusses how their targeted approach to digital maturity allows them to focus the conversations in around specific areas of the model, so that they get really specific outcomes and next steps to follow up on. Dan talks about how the maturity model workshops were well received by key stakeholders and the executive level at the university, and touches on the special relationship with external civic organisations. Lastly, the team talk about why they wanted to host a demonstrating digital transformation event and what the success of the day meant to them. University of Manchester Taps Matterport Digital Twins to Transform Onboarding for Students in the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama Matterport's Facilities Management solution helped the university develop an onboarding and training tool to virtually induct students before they can access rehearsal rooms SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 05, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Matterport, Inc. (Nasdaq: MTTR), announced the University of Manchester implemented Matterport's Digital Twin Platform for the renowned Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama (MHC) to revolutionize the way students interact with the center, enhancing their understanding of the facilities on offer and improving their overall experience. Matterport's Digital Twin Platform, which includes solutions for Facilities Management, Property Marketing and Design and Construction Management, provided the students with a rich and immersive virtual environment, allowing them to explore and familiarize themselves with the MHC's buildings and facilities. Using Matterport's Pro3 camera to capture the three buildings in the MHC, and Matterport's Facilities Management solution, which offers organizations tools for training and onboarding, the university's Department of Music developed a virtual induction module for students to complete before they can access the rehearsal rooms. The project's goal was to introduce students to the MHC before they had a chance to physically visit it, providing insights about the instruments available to students, who the rehearsal suites are available to, and the types of facilities and cohorts at the MHC, as well as a welcome video and snippets of different performances that have taken place at the college. To ensure students understood the information before using the space themselves, the Department of Music also produced a short quiz embedded within the learning module to help students retain the information. Successful completion of the quiz is necessary in order to gain access to the practice facilities. The university found that for students, the digital twin helped them familiarize with the space and ease apprehension. By engaging with the quiz, students gained valuable insights into their rehearsal spaces, who will care after the department's instruments, and more. This was also beneficial for people with specific mobility requirements, as they can plan routes around the building ahead of time and locate where there are ramps, push pads, and elevators, for example. "This scan and quiz has been invaluable," said Alexander Gagatsis, Director of Performance at the Department of Music, University of Manchester. "A lot of knowledge was lost during the pandemic, but now, we can slowly reintroduce students to good practice, such as how to safely store instruments, or who to contact asking for equipment. Importantly, because it takes only a few minutes to fill-out, the quiz is something that everyone can easily complete. The scan has also been invaluable as a means of showing our building to prospective applicants who are unable to attend any of our visit days." “It's been incredible to hear the positive feedback from both faculty and students about the convenience and accessibility Matterport has provided to the Martin Harris Centre,” said Natalie Lamb, Managing Director, International, Matterport. “This use case is a wonderful expression of how our digital twin technology can go beyond the traditional uses for Matterport, acting as not only a guide, but a learning tool that students can use at any time, as much as they may need.” With the success of this project, the Faculty of Humanities eLearning team has created a Matterport Interest Group dedicated to exploring further opportunities for digital twin integration and enhancing student learning across various disciplines. To learn more about how the University of Manchester is applying digital twins to its curriculum, you can read the full case study, or access the MHC Virtual Induction here. About Matterport Matterport, Inc. (Nasdaq: MTTR) is leading the digital transformation of the built world. We were in Manchester this month for the fifth episode of CityCast, where we spent the afternoon picking apart the very meaning of what it is to be a ‘smart city’. Rather than talking about cities of the future as ‘smart’, shouldn’t we be aiming to create something that we can describe as ‘wise’ instead? Dr Joe Ravetz has been working on this subject for the best part of 20 years, and had plenty to offer when it came to discussing how to first figure out what we really need cities for – and therefore how we can make them work best for the people living, working and playing in them. Joe is co-director of the Centre for Urban Resilience & Energy at the University of Manchester and has pioneered the art of strategic thinking for sustainable cities and regions. We also reported from the show floor at Smart IoT London, and Vijay Natarajan of Sparta Digital took on the quick-fire ‘Meet the Partners’ challenge.

A talk delivered by Jan Wilkinson at the Anybook Oxford Libraries Conference 2015 - Adapting for the Future: Developing Our Professions and Services, 21st July 2015. Previous organisational development (strategy, structure, skills) for the University of Manchester Library has delivered some rewarding, and very necessary, results. Many old challenges have been addressed, and the Library is now enjoying a very positive profile within the University. A renewed ambition and energy emerged amongst staff during our strategic planning 2013-17, leading to a new approach to both strategy process, and implementation. We have just completed our first year of 'Leading, Challenging and Connecting'. Success in our newly stated aspirations will depend, not only on professional project management, but also on a concerted effort to increase innovation and risk-taking across the organisation. Jan will share the ways in which the Library is taking a hard look at its current culture, and plans to move the Library from good to great through creativity, liberation, and fun!
