Fair fashion campaigner and influencer Venetia La Manna sets out to discover how the ways we produce, consume and value furniture have transformed over recent decades, and what that means for our homes and the planet. From the comfort of our sofas, it's a giant footprint and a major waste category that many of us are barely aware of. And with diminishing quality feeding our throwaway mindset, are we beginning to get stuck in a perpetual cycle? Venetia finds out how we got here and explores the nuanced reasons we turn to fast options – out of both choice and necessity, from the influence of social media to the housing crisis. We hear about the turning tide towards second hand furniture and the growing reuse market, and ask pioneering homewares giant IKEA about their sustainability strategy. If we act now, can fast furniture slow down before it's too late? With contributions from design historian Deborah Sugg Ryan, sustainable consumption expert Tim Cooper, TrendBible's Home and Interiors Editor Wendy Lowe, culture journalist Kieran Yates, and representatives from Bristol Waste, Gloucestershire County Council, and IKEA. Secondhand September is going strong here on Hot Buttons. And this week, we're talking with social media activist and slow-fashion advocate, Venetia La Manna. She's a prominent voice of the slow fashion movement, and has lots to say about how we interact with fashion, whether celebrity partnerships with fast fashion brands can ever have a sustainable impact, and where she likes to shop for resale.  First, we'll kick the show off by talking about Patagonia. The founder has given the company away to a special trust and a non-profit, with a special mission to take the profits and combat climate change. The move has brought enthusiasm and some criticism. We love it – and hope it's a signal to others to do the same. Have a question for Christina, Rachel and Shilla? Fast-fashion brands have revolutionised the way we buy clothes but are also a major contributor to climate change. As one of TV's most-watched shows ditches its fast-fashion sponsors, are consumers set to change their shopping habits? How did our wardrobes get so crammed with clothes and can fashion ever be green? This is The Overview. Presented by Julia O'Driscoll with guests Aja Barber, author of Consumed: The Need For Collective Change; Colonialism, Climate Change & Consumerism, Clare Press, founder of The Wardrobe Crisis, and former Love Island contestant and sustainable fashion advocate Brett Staniland. In episode 268, Kestrel welcomes Venetia La Manna, to the show. The host of All The Small Things podcast and the co-founder of Remember Who Made Them, Venetia uses her platforms to challenge fashion brands who are costing the earth and calls out retailers on their unethical practices in the fashion supply chain. “Fashion brands are so willing to talk about organic cotton and to talk about their latest recycled range. There are two things that fashion brands refuse to commit to — the first is paying their garment makers a fair living wage, and the second is a drastic reduction in overall output. But these are the two things that would actually, truly change the industry.” -Venetia Here's a question I've posed on Instagram: Is it OK to buy fast fashion secondhand? I was watching Venetia's YouTube channel recently, and in one video, she talks about this question. She says:  “I think it's worth us interrogating – but I'm not sure it's worth us giving ourselves a hard time about.”  So, back to that question – is it OK to buy secondhand fast fashion? Out of curiosity, I did a poll on Instagram the other day, and 96% of the respondents said *Yes, it's ok to buy it*, with only 4% saying *No it's not OK*. On the show, Venetia and I do interrogate it a bit, along with other questions like – why aren't garment makers centered in the ways we talk about and act on changing fashion? And how can we creatively share intense information about the unfair fashion industry to welcome more people into the conversation? Quotes & links from the conversation: All The Small Things, Venetia's podcast “I think the thing that has driven that is that focusing more on the environmental impact of fashion lets the majority of brands off the hook and allows them to continue to produce at a rate that our planet can't sustain, let alone, the people creating our clothes and the people carrying our clothes at the end of the supply chain.” (22:48) “Fashion brands are willing to talk about sustainability and the environment if it means more money for them.” (24:55) “Fast fashion brands have literally hijacked the language of the slow fashion movement and incorporated it in their marketing campaigns.” (29:54) Munya Chawawa, content creator Venetia admires CC with Timo Rissanen (ep 47) about how creativity thrives with constraints The Or Foundation Follow Venetia on Instagram > Follow Remember Who Made Them on Instagram > This week's episode is brought to you by Tradlands, a small business focused on timeless style, slow fashion principles, and small-batch production. If you're interested in checking them out, you can use code CONSCIOUSCHATTER20 for 20% off. FYI — I don't receive commissions from this partnership.

Hi pals! After our live ep last week we're back with some pop culture analysing. First up, ultra-fast fashion brand Pretty Little Thing (creatively directed by Molly-Mae Hague) held an unofficial runway during London Fashion Week. Slow fashion campaigners Venetia La Manna and Mayisha from Oh So Ethical, organised a protest for the rights of garment workers and the environment. We read from Venetia's column for The Independent, I staged a protest against the Pretty Little Thing fashion show. This is why. Next, Kanye West has spent the last week harassing his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. We dissect the evolution of the Instagram posting and ask why Kanye gets a pass for being the "manic genius". We read from two pieces. An opinion piece by Arwa Mahdawi titled Whatever's happening with Kanye and Kim, his behavior shouldn't be normalized and an article in The Swaddle by titled Kanye West Harassing Kim Kardashian Is No Laughing Matter. After that we get into Julia Fox AKA Miss Uncut Jems. We discuss her It Girl energy and reference a piece by Hunter Harris titled Julia Fox Is Her Own Muse, Thank You Very Much for The Cut. This sparks a convo around the "new It Girls". Are they mysterious or is this simply another iteration of the "Jennifer Lawrence pipeline" in action? For recommendations, Jas recommends another Cut piece titled Why Couldn't Anyone Cancel Dolce & Gabanna by Tahirah Hairston while Maggie reads an essay by Michael Sun titled I Will Be The Most Esoteric Person On The Bus. Welcome back to this mini series on imperfect sustainability!! My aim for this series is to inspire you to view sustainability in a more positive light and to help you to genuinely make a difference in your own life. Let's tackle this with a non-judgemental, solutions-driven attitude and lift each other up rather than tearing each other down. Episode 3: fast fashion vs conscious consumerism "The most sustainable clothes you can wear are those that are already in your wardrobe." Fast fashion is a complex and confusing topic to navigate, with so many considerations and nuances to be made. Fashion might seem harmless, but it's actually a hugely polluting industry; manufacturing clothes has a huge water consumption and creates huge amounts of CO2 emissions through transportation and in the factories. There's also a copious amount of waste involved - 12.8 million tons of clothing that end up in landfills every year in the US. Sustainable fashion is far from perfect at the moment but I think through shifting attitudes, being more mindful about how much and where we shop and considering 'do I love this item' before buying, we can start reducing the harmful effects fashion is having on the planet. --- Things mentioned in this episode: Clothes being made by hand (article) Leicester clothing scandal (article) Talking Tastebuds episode with Lydia Morrow (here) Good Influence episode with Venetia La Manna (here) bestdressed (youtube) --- Space to Learn on Apple Podcasts - leave a rating and a review here!! If we're going to be successful in reversing climate change, we need to make changes, which in my mind, calls for a collective mindset shift. We need to get over this fear of imperfection, to build the confidence to act, to stop making ourselves and others feel guilty and to be open-minded enough to make lifestyle changes. "Routine is the enemy of time." Like most things, productivity isn't inherently good or bad, but when it becomes an endless competition with others and stress leaves us continually feeling burnout and unmotivated, surely our societal norms have gone amiss somewhere along the way? In this episode, Lucy discusses her thoughts and experiences with toxic productivity, hustle culture and burnout, offers some advice for reducing stress and being more mindful as well as chatting about the problems with our capitalist mindsets. According to research by the Mental Health Foundation, 1 in 6 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given week, with the number 1 cause of this being work-related stress- so it's clearly an important topic to talk about. Know that you're not alone if you feel stressed, anxious or low and please chat to a loved one about how you're feeling or seek professional help. Lots of love. Another week, another episode of Space To Learn! This week Lucy's discussing racism in the UK and why the internal work to dismantle subconscious beliefs and biases due to our white supremacist society is so important. It's a year on since the death of George Floyd- how much has changed thanks to the Black Lives Matter Movement? Lucy addresses why racism is an issue white people must engage with and shares some incredibly insightful resources she's found helpful in the process of educating herself on race and unpacking internal white supremacy. If you haven't previously engaged with content on race then please go and listen to the voices of People of Colour first - the aim is not to make this discussion white centred but to point out ways we can be more actively anti-racist and to think more deeply about our impact.
