Original 420 flag, from the Waldo's official website. All five of the original 420 Waldos are in the studio today on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. Waldo Dave and Waldo Steve were on Brew Ha Ha once before, on this episode of April 18, 2019. This time, all five of them are here. Steve, Dave, Jeff, Larry and Mark are here, they are the original Waldos from San Rafael High School in the early 1970s. There is ample documentation of their invention of the expression 420 on their website. It is the first time all five of them have been together for a radio interview. They used to hang out on the wall, every day between classes and after school. “We were all about comedy and having fun.” They also listened to a lot of music, including the great bands from the Bay Area at the time. Lagunitas makes a special 420 Waldos beer and they have some of it in studio today. At the time, one of them had a brother who was in the Coast Guard who knew of a secret garden. One of them got the map. Visit our sponsor Pizzaleah in Windsor for the finest pizza menu and the most authentic flavors around!

Neither candidate secured over 50% in the February primary. Key voter concerns include zoning, transportation, and LGBTQ+ rights. Early voting runs through March 7 at two locations, with Election Day on March 11. The winner will face Republican Alicia Adams on April 28. The election redo, ordered after a court ruling on district maps, could cost taxpayers $1.5 million. STORY 2: Cobb to Consider Gas Station, Drive-Thru on Austell Road The Cobb County Planning Commission will review a proposal for a gas station, convenience store, retail spaces, and a drive-thru restaurant on Austell Road near Pat Mell Road. The 3.83-acre site will replace an existing water damage recovery business with two new buildings: a 5,000-square-foot convenience store with eight fuel stations and attached retail spaces, and a 2,200-square-foot fast-food restaurant. The convenience store will operate 24/7, while other spaces will run 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Zoning staff supports the plan, recommending a 20-foot landscape buffer and lighting plans to protect nearby residential areas. STORY 3: Cobb and Douglas Public Health wants to expand services, but federal funding has grown more uncertain Lisa Crossman, deputy director of Cobb and Douglas Public Health, is focused on improving health services in South Cobb, where many residents lack insurance, healthy food options, and mental health resources. Plans include a $17.5 million health center offering services like cancer screenings, mental health care, and a food pantry. Federal funding delays, including $3 million from Sen. Jon Ossoff, threaten the project’s timeline. Local nonprofits like Sweetwater Mission and the Center for Family Resources support the initiative, emphasizing its importance for underserved residents. Crossman is seeking alternative funding to avoid significant delays, aiming for a 2026 opening. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. STORY 5: High Court Upholds Conviction of Mableton Murderer The Georgia Supreme Court upheld the murder conviction of David Nesbit, who fatally shot Gregory Gabriel during a 2020 altercation at a Mableton gas station. Nesbit initiated the dispute, firing the first shot, while Gabriel, unable to flee, was struck twice and later died. Nesbit fled the scene but was arrested over a week later, indicted in 2021, and sentenced to 35 years in 2022. His appeal for a new trial, citing ineffective counsel and alleged prosecutorial misconduct, was denied, with the Supreme Court affirming the conviction on Tuesday. Founded by Jessena and Michael Waldo, the space offers 12 wine varietals, locally-sourced charcuterie, and an intimate, educational wine experience. The 1,000-square-foot venue features dark red and black decor, an outdoor patio, and events like wine tastings, classes, and live entertainment. The Waldos aim to foster community and share their passion for wine, with plans to expand in the future. The grand opening includes live music, food, and wine giveaways. Visit www.divinelyelegantvines.com for details. STORY 7: Georgia Senate Republicans pass religious freedom law, raising concerns about discrimination The Georgia Senate passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (SB 36) on Tuesday in a 32-23 party-line vote. The bill requires courts to prioritize religious customs in disputes unless there’s a “compelling government interest.” Proponents, like Sen. Ed Setzler, argue it protects religious rights, citing cases from other states. Critics, including Sen. RaShaun Kemp, warn it could enable discrimination against LGBTQ individuals and others, as the bill lacks anti-discrimination protections. Similar legislation was vetoed in 2016 due to backlash from civil rights groups and businesses. SB 36 now heads to the Georgia House for consideration. Tony Magee tells his story. There is no new Brew Ha Ha show today, Thursday July 4, since our home station 95.5 Wine Country Radio is taking the Independence Day holiday. So here is a chance to listen again to our interview with Tony Magee, the now-retired founder of Lagunitas. He may be elusive and seem to have gained mythical status, but Herlinda Heras has just finished interviewing him for the Sonoma County Museum's ON TAP exhibit, along with Don Barkley and Mark Carpenter, and today he tells his story for us. This interview was recorded live on the radio on April 18, 2024. Tony Magee, the now-retired founder of Lagunitas, is back on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. The last time Tony Magee was on Brew Ha Ha was this episode in 2014. Today he and his wife have a ranch where they host retired horses and also some cattle. Herlinda Heras has been working with the Museum of Sonoma County to organize On Tap, the exhibit about craft beer history that is opening this weekend. Tony sat for a video interview for the exhibition and he is pleased to be part of it. He started Lagunitas in 1993 and grew it into one of the largest breweries in the country. In 2017 Heineken acquired the company. Tony tells the interesting back story to the acquisition. Lagunitas was beginning to sell beer outside the US, which is not easy to do. He also had grown Lagunitas to a point where the US market was starting to feel saturated with new beer brands as the popularity of craft beer grew. He started to think about a longer term plan for the company, rather than endure infinite domestic competition. Heineken was (and is) the last family-owned global brewer. Click to visit the Museum of Sonoma County website. Finding the Right Partner All the other big companies are multinationals. Tony says Lagunitas never really discussed the acquisition with other companies because none of them had Heineken's character. Hearing him tell the story, he sounds really pleased with how it all happened. He says he thought of the brewery as an art project, with an artist will eventually sell and once that happens, that's it. He gives credit to Heineken for updating the structure of the business operation but for not changing the beer or the recipes and the brew master is still there. This is the best time in the last thousand years to be a beer lover. -Tony Magee Herlinda asks what the inspiration was for the brewery. For Tony, he was doing a completely different job. He was in commercial printing sales and he was a home brewer. His brother got him a home brew kit for Christmas of 1992, in January of '93 he brewed it, and by December of 1993 the brewery was open. He recognized things in brewing that reminded him of music. As musician that helped him understand brewing. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. A lot of Lagunitas beer is IPA style and hop focused. His friend Grant Johnston who was a brewer at Marin Brewing would also homebrew. He was experimenting by adding his hops late in the boil, which boosted the flavors and didn't let bitterness develop by boiling too long. This was how they created a hop-forward style that became the central thesis of the brewery. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. 22:50, they mention Cappuccino Stout, which Tony says may be one of the earliest coffee beers in the US.  (In a Kurt Vonnegut story written long before the craft beer era, there is a mention of an award-winning beer in a fictional Indiana state fair, and coffee was the secret ingredient.) They also mention the 420 Waldos and the Lagunitas beer that celebrates the story. The Waldos were guests on Brew Ha Ha on this episode back in 2019. They remember the Beer Circus, which sounds like you had to have seen it.

The USA Soccercast is back to jumpstart the weekend with an action packed Episode 118! On this episode, we welcome Eric Schmitz from the World of Concacaf Podcast to help us debate one of the main topics of the week. First, we have discussion on the rumored 2024 home jersey for the USMNT and USWNT. U.S. Soccer needs a jersey identity, and the Waldos are it. However, we discuss the rumored jersey design and explain the need to identify something that U.S. Soccer fans can start to get behind ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Speaking of the 2026 World Cup, the rumors are all over the place: LA out, Vegas potentially in, and AT&T Stadium aka JerryWorld in the driver's seat to host the 2026 World Cup Final. Could SoFi Stadium, the most expensive stadium in the history of the world, really not host matches? It seems possible, and Jerry Jones and the Dallas committee is pulling out all the stops in an effort to host the final. After the break, we are joined by Eric Schmitz of the World of Concacaf Podcast to discuss a debate that was set in motion a couple days ago by Jozy Altidore's appearance on CBS Sports Golazo's “Kickin It” show. Eric Schmitz helps us break down which team could be the better one between the two teams (with some additions to each, because it helps balance how you discuss this). He has also developed a tea-based beverage for Lagunitas, which is completely alcohol-free. Bryan says he is most proud of Hoppy Refresher, which is a dry-hopped sparkling water. Griffo Distillery is also constantly innovating. Their last new product was a cold-brewed coffee liqueur. Griffo also has pop-ups coming to the distillery. On April 28, Second Staff, a local catering company, will be serving Korean Fried Chicken. They are on Scott Street in Petaluma. This month, stoners around the world will be celebrating our high holiday—April 20th, or 4/20. But how exactly did 420 become the official number of cannabis? Over the years, there have been several myths circulated about it: that it was some police code related to weed, or that it's the number of chemical compounds in the plant … but believe it or not, the ultimate marijuana meme was actually started over 50 years ago by a group of teenagers in Marin County, California known as The Waldos. How it evolved from an inside joke amongst a handful of high schoolers into the worldwide phenomenon it is today is a truly remarkable story—one that you're about to hear from some of the founding fathers of 420 themselves.  In this episode of Cannthropology, host Bobby Black speaks with two of the five original Waldos—Steve Capper and Dave Reddix, aka Waldo Steve and Waldo Dave, who explain the origins behind their groups' name, how 420 became their secret code for weed, and how two counterculture institutions—The Grateful Dead and High Times —helped spread the 420 phenomenon around the world.   The World of Cannabis Museum Project presents: Cannthropology—the potcast that explores the history of cannabis culture one artifact and interview at a time. Hosted by World of Cannabis executive director and marijuana media icon Bobby Black.  Read our Cannthropology blog at worldofcannabis.museum/cannthropology and in our official media partner Leaf Magazine. The SSFC Podcast is back, and Episode 81 is ready for your weekend consumption after a lengthy but rewarding summer break! With so much going on, there was one big topic that got the podcast back in the booth: the 2022 U.S. Soccer jerseys. They have been the talk of the USMNT and USWNT fanbase all week, and not because they've been universally loved. We are a month away from their release, and fans are upset at the result of these designs. We dive into the jerseys, from their design elements to what people don't like about them. We also get into the design process and how it generally works, and how a jersey goes from drawing board to the soccer field. As we approach the World Cup, we give our thoughts on the jersey designs, and how U.S. Soccer and Nike can bring several parties into the process in order to develop a jersey identity that we can be proud to have, and spoiler alert: we're talking about the Waldos. An article earlier this week by Steven Goff of the Washington Post had some incredible nuggets of information about the United States Men's National Team, and we discuss some of that info on Episode 79! The USMNT only have a double international window in June and a September window before the 2022 World Cup, and Goff gives us some information from Gregg Berhalter about how those windows could shape up. We begin with the June double window, which sees the USMNT have 4 matches: 2 friendlies and 2 Concacaf Nations League group stage matches. Berhalter gives a glimpse of who we could see included on the roster for those matches, as well as who may miss the cut either due to injury or other reasons. We then move to the September window, in which we learn that Spain and Germany are the potential places where we could play matches against teams from Asia. Who could those teams be? What stadiums are under consideration? Some research is done to give some educated guesses. After the break, the USMNT and USWNT will have new jerseys this fall, and while it was discussed initially on Episode 67, we once again discuss how plain they look. The United States needs a jersey identity, but these aren't it. We've opined on this before, but we'll say it again: just bring back the Waldos. Everyone wants them back, so make it so! Next week, we will do a mailbag episode, so get those questions in! Send them to SSFC Podcast at Gmail dot com. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

“Sativa to change the things I can, Indica to accept the things I can't.”- Bob Marley   Greetings and welcome to HomeBrew RockStars Episode 84 “Hazy History of 420”. In this episode we visit the origins of '420'. There are many versions, but we have the real deal detailng some Cali teenagers in search of free weed unbeknown to them that they would carve out a piece of modern folklore and an unofficial holiday. In fact, Lagunitas Brewing Co. brews a seasonal beer artfully named The Waldos, commemorating those crazy teens. The guys also talk about a list titled ‘9 Beers with a 420 Twiist' So, grab a beer, roll one up if you wish and settle in for some fun history that they never taught you in school. This is an appropriate time to queue up some Sublime and Cheech & Chong before ya ‘hit' the podcast.  We sampled some beverages during our fact-finding venture. Starting off with an offering from a local brewery named Prairie St Brewing Co. aptly name Prairie St IPA. This is a 68 IBU / 6.4% ABV easy drinker with floral, grapefruit and pine notes. The hops are locally sourced from Live Wire Hops in Amboy, IL. Nice job gents! Sears brought his Belgian Wit with a Kick, which is generously dosed with THC tincture. Brent found a CBD beverage from Hi-Lo Cannabis of Chicago IL. A light, sugar free cherry-lime caffeinated drink with CBD that we all though was very tasty and refreshing. Great for a warm summer afternoon. There was a canned non-alchol Black Coffee drink from Marz Brewing Community to keep our energy up.  If any of you listeners have a home brew you want to have the guys sample on the show give us a shout either via e-mail, our web site or Facebook. We would love the opportunity and get ya to call in and share with us, we promise we will be nice. As always we are thankful for our sponsors who we are glad to see still rocking it! If you are looking for a great craft beer and some of the best vegan food in the state line? Try Pig Minds Brewing and check out the new addition, looks awesome guys! Also stop in and see our good friends at Urban Forest Brewing and try the fine libations Alex and Heath proudly pour… YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED! Want to get some of Chicago area's finest craft beer without the travel into the Windy City? Or seeking a hard-to-find commercial craft beer, wine or spirits to take home or as a gift? Stop in to Artale & Co, Anthony and Aaron have plenty of great ideas. When you are ready to start a new indoor gardening project stop in to 815 Gardens, Bob will be happy to help. Tell them that HomeBrew Rockstars sent ya. As always, we appreciate if you make sure to Like us, Follow us and RATE US, or hate us, but do something! Prost! #drinkitup

I didn't know much about the Waldo's before I found the 420waldos website. So this conversation kind of came to me by surprise, but learning that these group of five friends coined the term "420" was compelling enough for me to ask the questions of how, what and why they became known for this term. There have been many misconceptions, fallacies, falsehoods, and media inaccuracies about the beginnings of '420', and even about The Waldos.   Although the Waldos are still friends and still together as a group today, the backstory of The Waldos and ‘420' beginnings is a golden era we will never see the likes of again—the 1970's in Marin County, CA— San Francisco Bay Area. Do you ever feel book guilt?   Do you ever feel book shame?   Do you ever feel bad when you quit a book?   Do you ever feel like the books you read aren't ‘hard' enough?   These are common feelings that I know I've had. I say we need to get rid of all the book shame and book guilt we learn as we grow up because there really is no right or wrong way to read. We need to escape the book exhaustion that can come with endless Shakespeare, mandatory classics, and piles of textbooks.   We need to tell kids that they can read whatever they want to read.   Picture books! Comic books! Young Adult!   Whatever.   Just follow your joy and keep the books coming.   I partly started 3 Books as a way to keep stoking the flames for that pure love of reading books.   For most of my adult life, I lost my love of reading. Loved books as a child! And yet somehow by my late 20s I had almost completely stopped reading books. What was it? I'm not sure if it was too many dry textbooks, the endless addiction of social media feed, or the false belief I just didn't have time to read anymore.   How many times have you heard that?   Chapter 86 of 3 Books is a little different. It's a mental intermezzo between deep dives.   It's a way to hopefully remind us of the pure joy that comes from reading books. Of spreading books out on the carpet and playing with them and doing somersaults over them. This chapter is about tapping back into that childhood love of reading.   We are going to hang out on my bedroom floor with my two year old son …   Join me as we flip the page into Chapter 86 …   What You'll Learn:   Why are chapter books scary? What can books with flaps teach us about our cities? Why do so many people go to the bathroom in train stations? How does Waldo get around so much? How can sharks jump onto boats?   You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/86    Leave us a voicemail. Recently the world was able to witness the sentencing of Derek Chauvin the idiot police officer that murdered George Floyd. Even though the decision comes with mixed emotions still given the climate of things it is pretty safe to say in some facet justice has been served. This sentencing will not bring back the life that was lost but at least this helps give the family some type of closure while they are still dealing with the loss of a loved one. Since the senseless killing of George Floyd there has been countless other stories of individuals dying by the hands of police officers so even though this is a good feel moment for a lot it just goes to show that the job is still not done."In 1971, five high school students in San Rafael, California, used the term "4:20" in connection with a plan to search for an abandoned cannabis crop, based on a treasure map made by the grower. Calling themselves the Waldos, because their typical hang-out spot "was a wall outside the school", the five students — Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich —designated the Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of San Rafael High School as their meeting place, and 4:20 pm as their meeting time. The Waldos referred to this plan with the phrase "4:20 Louis". After several failed attempts to find the crop, the group eventually shortened their phrase to "4:20", which ultimately evolved into a code-word the teens used to refer to consuming cannabis." That right there ladies and gentleman is how years later we are still lighting up a join on the infamous April 20th. The super league, many of you may be reading this or listening to this episode & may have no idea what the super league is, so i'm going to break it down for you real simple. The Super League (organised by the European Super League Company, S.L.), commonly referred to as the European Super League (ESL), was a proposed annual club football competition to be contested by twenty European football clubs. The competition would consist of fifteen "founding clubs" – who would be permanent participants in the competition and govern it – alongside five other European clubs who would qualify based upon their performance in their domestic league's most recent season. It was planned as a breakaway competition to rival or replace the UEFA Champions League, Europe's premier club football tournament organised by UEFA. Basically a little boy clubs of rich as your imagination can roam owners coming together to devise one of the biggest distribution of wealth of all time. Luckily for football fans world wide since announcing there plans a bunch of marquee "founding" teams have pulled out of this nonsense. Tune into this episode to hear us discuss. The ups and downs when it comes to bitcoin have been a thing since its dawn, historically year over year it only climbs, hodl and watch what happens.

There are no better guests to have on the show this week than the 4/20 founding fathers themselves, Steve Capper and Dave Raddix of the group,“The Waldo’s.” Steve and Dave share how they became known as The Waldos while attending high school in the 1970’s in Marin County, California. They dive into the origin story of 4/20, and the serendipitous events that led to the group meeting at 4:20 pm, a number that became a secret code for weed when in the presence of authority figures. The term spread throughout various communities, including the Grateful Dead Community, until eventually becoming official slang for weed. Steve and Dave debunk common theories about where the term 4/20 began, and discuss the progress that the cannabis industry has made throughout the last five years. Steve and Dave also share a funny anecdote involving a run-in with the police!

Boston was once an island held together by a patchwork of dams, bridges and wharfs. The Mill Pond was a dominant feature for 200 years and on many old maps there is a forgotten point called "Waldos Wharf". Who was Waldo? Show Notes: https://lostmassachusetts.com/a-lost-place/f/details-for-waldos-wharf-the-mill-pond Mill Pond (thewestendmuseum.org) Early attempts ( c.1636) to harness the tide of the North Cove were thwarted; however, in 1643 the Town Council granted land and the entire cove to a group of proprietors, headed by Henry Simons, on the condition that they erect a grist mill powered by the tide. How Boston Made Itself Bigger (nationalgeographic.com) Maps from 1630 to the present show how the city—once an 800-acre peninsula—grew into what it is today. Memorial History of Boston (tbm100.org) For the purpose of encouraging the erection of a watermill, the town granted, in July, 1643, all the cove and the salt marsh bordering upon it northwest of the causeway leading to Charlestown, together with three hundred acres of land at Braintree, on condition that the grantees should, within three years, erect one or more corn mills to be maintained forever.' The cove thus granted was known, down to our own time, as the mill-pond. History of the Boston Landfill Project: How Boston Lost Its Hills (historyofmassachusetts.org) By 1775, the city had built a long wharf about ½ mile long and also built a dam across the North Cove, creating a pond the colonists named Mill pond. The dam was used to power grist mills and sawmills in the area. 1775 Boston Map (walkingboston.com) 1775 Mill Pond Walking Map (walkingboston.com) Boston's land filled sections (walkingboston.com) Overlay modern Boston map with original Shawmut Island (bostonresearchcenter.org) 1814 Boston map with 1880 streets overlaid (utexas.edu) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lostmass/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lostmass/support

Podcast: The 420 Small Batch episode covering the history of 420, Sweetwater 420 beer tastings, an epic 420 ad fail and a music from Weed. Another small batch podcast from Home Brew Rock Stars takes a hard hit on the history of 420, with a great 70's story about a group of high school stoners called the Waldos, who frequent an after school adventure into the local Point Reyes Forest in a never-ending search for a secret weed field. They never find their wild bud orchard, but their code word "420", which was the time they would meet after school to get high before this celebrated daily cannabis treasure trip, would become infamous, partially because their 420 slang organically saturated into the culture of the Grateful Dead, as well as High Times Magazine. We've pasted the somewhat redacted Huffington Post story below for your perusal...HAPPY 420! We sample two delicious craft beers from SweetWater Brewing Co. from their 420 Strain G13. First, the 420 IPA offering a great body, good head and nice amount of haze at a pleasurable 6% ABV with dank hops of Columbus and Simcoe, plus two dry hop additions. Then the 420 Mango Kush, a second sticky hit from 420 Strain that is an American Wheat packed with herbal, juicy mango notes and a distinctive dank nose. #danknevertastedsogood We also sample a wild peche ale from a secret brewery in Lisle, IL that will come to me when that Grape Crusher fades back down. HA! Finally, we sample some rock n roll from WEED, a German/British project/band which was created by Virus krautrock band + Ken Hensley (from Uriah Heep). They recorded one self-titled album in 1971 with music very similar to Uriah Heep (lots of roaring Hensley's organ and guitar pyrotechnics). A hearty SQUEAL to Pig Minds Brewing Co. and Artale & Co. for their awesome support and sponsorship! #drinkitup   True Story Of How April 20 Became ‘Weed Day’ [Huffington Post] The origin of the term 420, celebrated around the world by pot smokers every April 20, has long been obscured by the clouded memories of the folks who made it a phenomenon. Depending on who you ask, or their state of inebriation, there are as many varieties of answers as strains of medical bud in California. It’s the number of active chemicals in marijuana. It’s teatime in Holland. It has something to do with Hitler’s birthday. It’s those numbers in that Bob Dylan song multiplied. The Huffington Post chased the term back to its roots and was able to find it in a lost patch of cannabis in a Point Reyes, California forest. Just as interesting as its origin, it turns out, is how it spread. It starts with the Grateful Dead. It was Christmas week in Oakland, 1990. Steven Bloom was wandering through The Lot - that timeless gathering of hippies that springs up in the parking lot before every Grateful Dead concert - when a Deadhead handed him a yellow flyer. “We are going to meet at 4:20 on 4/20 for 420-ing in Marin County at the Bolinas Ridge sunset spot on Mt. Tamalpais,” reads the message, which Bloom dug up and forwarded to the Huffington Post. Bloom, then a reporter for High Times magazine and now the publisher of CelebStoner.com and co-author of Pot Culture, had never heard of “420-ing” before. The flyer came complete with a 420 back story: “420 started somewhere in San Rafael, California in the late ‘70s. It started as the police code for Marijuana Smoking in Progress. After local heads heard of the police call, they started using the expression 420 when referring to herb - Let’s Go 420, dude!” Bloom reported his find in the May 1991 issue of High Times, which the magazine found in its archives and provided to the Huffington Post. The story, though, was only partially right. It had nothing to do with a police code — ironically, the San Rafael part was dead on. Indeed, a group of five San Rafael High School friends known as the Waldos - by virtue of their chosen hang-out spot, a wall outside the school - coined the term in 1971. The Huffington Post spoke with Waldo Steve, Waldo Dave and Dave’s older brother, Patrick, and confirmed their full names and identities, which they asked to keep secret for professional reasons. (Pot is still, after all, illegal at this time) The Waldos never envisioned that pot smokers the world over would celebrate each April 20th as a result of their foray into the Point Reyes forest. The day has managed to become something of a national holiday in the face of official condemnation. The code often creeps into popular culture and mainstream settings. Nearly all of the clocks in the pawn shop scene in “Pulp Fiction,” for instance, are set to 4:20. In 2003, when the California legislature codified the medical marijuana law voters had approved, the bill was named SB420. The code pops up in Craig’s List postings when fellow smokers search for “420 friendly” roommates. “It’s just a vaguer way of saying it and it kind of makes it kind of cool,” says Bloom. “Like, you know you’re in the know, but that does show you how it’s in the mainstream.” The Waldos do have proof, however, that they used the term in the early ‘70s in the form of an old 420 flag and numerous letters with 420 references and early ‘70s post marks. They also have a story. It goes like this: One day in the Fall of 1971 - harvest time - the Waldos got word of a Coast Guard service member who could no longer tend his plot of marijuana plants near the Point Reyes Peninsula Coast Guard station. A treasure map in hand, the Waldos decided to pluck some of this free bud. The Waldos were all athletes and agreed to meet at the statue of Louis Pasteur outside the school at 4:20, after practice, to begin the hunt. Waldo Steve tells it, “We would remind each other in the hallways we were supposed to meet up at 4:20. It originally started out 4:20-Louis and we eventually dropped the Louis,” The first forays out were unsuccessful, but the group kept looking for the hidden crop. “We’d meet at 4:20 and get in my old ‘66 Chevy Impala and, of course, we’d smoke instantly and smoke all the way out to Pt. Reyes and smoke the entire time we were out there. We did it week after week,” says Steve. “We never actually found the patch.” But they did find a useful codeword. “I could say to one of my friends, I’d go, 420, and it was telepathic. He would know if I was saying, ‘Hey, do you wanna go smoke some?’ Or, ‘Do you have any?’ Or, ‘Are you stoned right now?’ It was kind of telepathic just from the way you said it,” Steve says. “Our teachers didn’t know what we were talking about. Our parents didn’t know what we were talking about.” It’s one thing to identify the origin of the term. Indeed, Wikipedia and Urban Dictionary already include references to the Waldos. The bigger question: How did 420 spread from a circle of California stoners across the globe? BEER BREAK>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> As fortune would have it, the collapse of San Francisco’s hippie utopia in the late ‘60s set the stage. As speed freaks, thugs and con artists took over The Haight, the Grateful Dead picked up and moved to the Marin County hills - just blocks from San Rafael High School. “Marin Country was kind of ground zero for the counter culture,” says Steve. The Waldos had more than just a geographic connection to the Dead. Mark Waldo’s father took care of real estate for the Dead. And Waldo Dave’s older brother, Patrick, managed a Dead sideband and was good friends with bassist Phil Lesh. Patrick smoked with Lesh on numerous occasions. He couldn’t recall if he used the term 420 around him, but guessed that he must have. The Dead, recalls Waldo Dave Reddix, “had this rehearsal hall on Front Street, San Rafael, California, and they used to practice there. So we used to go hang out and listen to them play music and get high while they’re practicing for gigs. But I think it’s possible my brother Patrick might have spread it through Phil Lesh. And me, too, because I was hanging out with Lesh and his band [as a roadie] when they were doing a summer tour my brother was managing.” The Waldos also had open access to Dead parties and rehearsals. “We’d go with [Mark’s] dad, who was a hip dad from the ‘60s,” says Steve. “There was a place called Winterland and we’d always be backstage running around or onstage and, of course, we’re using those phrases. When somebody passes a joint or something, ‘Hey, 420.’ So it started spreading through that community.” As the Grateful Dead toured the globe through the ‘70s and ‘80s, playing hundreds of shows a year - the term spread though the Dead underground. Once High Times got hip to it, the magazine helped take it global. Sometime in the early ‘90s, High Times wisely purchased the web domain 420.com. The Waldos say that within a few years the term had spread throughout San Rafael and was cropping up elsewhere in the state. By the early ‘90s, it had penetrated deep enough that Dave and Steve started hearing people use it in unexpected places - Ohio, Florida, Canada - and spotted it painted on signs and etched into park benches. In 1997, the Waldos decided to set the record straight and got in touch with High Times. “They said, ‘The fact is, there is no 420 [police] code in California. You guys ever look it up?’” Blooms recalls. He had to admit that no, he had never looked it up. Hager flew out to San Rafael, met the Waldos, examined their evidence, spoke with others in town, and concluded they were telling the truth. Hager still believes them. “No one’s ever been able to come up with any use of 420 that predates the 1971 usage, which they had established. So unless somebody can come up with something that predates them, then I don’t think anybody’s going to get credit for it other than them,” he says. “We never made a dime on the thing,” says Waldo Dave, but he does take pride in his role, though. “I still have a lot of friends who tell their friends that they know one of the guys that started the 420 thing. So it’s kind of like a cult celebrity thing. Two years ago I went to the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. High Times magazine flew me out,” says Dave.

Today we meet the 420 Waldos, the guys who started the term "420" back when they were in high school in Marin County in the 1970s. They tell the story of how they invented the name Waldos at San Rafael High School in 1971. They go by "Waldo Dave" and "Waldo Steve" and Herlinda has also invited Sam from Lagunitas. Herlinda met them at a Lagunitas limited-release party a few years ago. Steve and Dave tell about being high school students who hung out and kept themselves amused with interesting things they discovered. They took trips looking for inspiration. They heard about some hologram inventors in Palo Alto. He brought his friends the next week and Dave named these trips a "Safari" which meant it was like a scouts trip, but they were high. They called themselves the Waldos because they would hang out on a wall, cracking jokes. One of them sais his brother was in the Coast Guard and rumor had it there was a secret pot garden that some of them had started. They had a map so they decided to meet at 4:20 PM in front of the statue of Louis Pasteur to get high before they went out looking for the patch. They would say "420 Louis" then just "420" and they liked that they could talk about pot without others understanding. When they went away to college, others picked up the expression. One of their brothers was good friends with the bass player of the Grateful Dead. He worked as a roadie and ticket collector for the band. They had a lot of fun and spread the term among the Deadheads that attended the shows. It seeped into their lexicon. They can't trademark the term "420" because it is too much in common usage. But they do have trademarks on "420 Waldos" and "1971 420 Waldos." They taste the Waldo Special Ale which is 11.7% alcohol. About eight years ago Ron Lindenbusch had done some other tribute beers with Frank Zappa and his family, and others. They had tons of barrels with different hops. They chose the hops that smelled the most like marijuana and used them to brew the beer. It's a big hoppy triple IPA. Some Columbus, Citrus, Mosaic hops, which all together resemble the flavors of marijuana. The Waldos hung out on a wall in between classes, not while smoking, but they make jokes there and 420 was only the tip of the iceberg of their whole Waldo culture of inside jokes and wisecracks. Mark Carpenter also talks about the Lagunitas Daytime beer that he is drinking today, which is only about 4% alcohol. Herlinda mentions HR 420, a bill in Congress to take Marijuana off Schedule One, a list that includes hard drugs. In the late 90s, High Times magazine met with them and wrote an article about them. Then in the early 2000s, the term spread on the Internet. There was a celebration on Hippie Hill in San Francisco  and they took care to clean up the trash that was being left. They still remind people to pick up their trash. For the rest of the show they tell story after story about the Waldos and their hilarious history.

Then visit the stores where Waldo is lurking - these stores have a Waldo sticker on an outside window.   Now the fun begins - find the six inch tall cardboard Waldo in the store (or library).  Once you have located him, the store staff will stamp your passport with a fun stamp unique to that store.  After collecting 10 stamps, you will receive a very cool Waldo button in the bookstore.  And the more stamps you accumulate in your passport, the more prizes you get.  The final celebration and prize giveaway will be on July 31st at 11 a.m. in the bookstore. This is a fun month-long event for Bainbridge Island and for visitors.  There's still time to find at least 10 Waldos, or even all 25 and win lots of cool prizes donated by store co-sponsors. And now a brief history of 4/20: In 1971, five high school students – Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich in San Rafael, California, calling themselves the Waldos because "their chosen hang-out spot was a wall outside the school", used the term in connection with a 1971 plan to search for an abandoned cannabis crop that they had learned about, based on a treasure map made by the grower. The Waldos designated the Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of San Rafael High School as their meeting place, and 4:20 p.m. as their meeting time.[9] The Waldos referred to this plan with the phrase "4:20 Louis". After several failed attempts to find the crop, the group eventually shortened their phrase to simply "4:20", which ultimately evolved into a code-word that the teens used to mean consuming cannabis. Mike Edison says that Steven Hager of High Times was responsible for taking the story about the Waldos to "mind-boggling, cult-like extremes" and "suppressing" all other stories about the origin of the term. Hager wrote "Stoner Smart or Stoner Stupid?", in which he attributed the early spread of the phrase to Grateful Dead followers – after Reddix became a roadie for the Dead's bassist, Phil Lesh and called for 4:20 p.m. to be the socially accepted hour of the day to consume cannabis.
