#1142 Three - Five-Three Method to Engage Web Visitors | Wayne Mullins

More than a Few Words

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2025 9:17

A few years ago I sat down with Wayne Mullins, founder of Ugly Mug Marketing, to dive into his unique “3-5-3” formula for turning your website from a static space into a real business driver. If you missed the original release of this episode, you want to be sure to catch it now.  His approach is all about honing in on what users need, and it starts with capturing attention in the first three seconds. The truth is, visitors aren't "browsing" anymore—they're "hopping" from one page to the next, and you need a hook to keep them around. Next up are the five critical questions to ask on every page. Who's visiting this page? What's the exact action you want them to take? And maybe most importantly, why would they take that action, from their perspective? This exercise of stepping into the visitor's shoes can completely transform how each page is designed to serve them. The final three elements, or “three C's,” of effective design wrap it all together: composition, contrast, and content. Wayne's big takeaway here? Lead with the content. Instead of designing for looks first, start with what you're trying to communicate, then build the design around it. Simple and actionable tips like these make the 3-5-3 formula a powerful way to evaluate your site and start getting better results right away.   If you've enjoyed this conversation sign up for a weekly newsletter get links to episodes you might have missed and other resources for your business   https://morethanafewwords.com/avoid-fomo/

3 Mistakes That Sabotage Company Culture Wayne Mullins Have you ever wondered why some companies seem to effortlessly reach their goals while others struggle - despite having all the right tools? The answer often lies in one of the most overlooked aspects of business success—company culture. It's the invisible force that guides every decision and action, but too often, the culture we envision doesn't match the reality we live every day. To help us unravel this mystery and learn how you can shape and transform your company or business culture to align with your vision, I'm excited to be joined by Wayne Mullins, the founder of Ugly Mug Marketing. Wayne's expertise goes far beyond just creating a nice website. He and his team focus on helping you achieve the results YOU want through effective marketing, social media, events, SEO, and more. Wayne Mullins and his team are “results oriented” in everything they do! This why they believe “Ugly Mug Marketing” can help you build the business of your dreams, too. Amen! Wayne is also the author of the book, “Full Circle Marketing,” as well. Amen! If you're ready to learn how to bridge the gap between where your company culture is and where it needs to be, this conversation is one you can't afford to miss! With that being said, help me welcome back to the program, Wayne Mullins! Wayne, it is a blessing to have you back with us today! For those that may have missed our prior interview, I believe it was episode 1528 – if you did miss that, go back and listen… Wayne was dropping several value bombs there that will definitely help you in your SEO battle. Amen!... But Wayne, for those that may have missed that, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Wayne Mullins?” Last time, we did an overview of what you do and how you can help businesses and entrepreneurs… Today, I wanted to focus on one of the most important aspects of running a successful business – and that is company culture. I've worked for companies where I dreaded going to work. I've also worked for organizations where I actually looked forward to going to work because I loved the job, the people and believed in the mission. How important is company culture in the success of a business? What exactly makes up a successful company culture? You list “3 Mistakes that Sabotage Your Company Culture.” Can you go over those three common mistakes for us? What makes a company culture toxic? If you are the business owner, and based on what you just shared, as an owner, how can we begin to make a successful culture change? Is this something that needs to be done gradually? So no big changes – or is it better to just dive right in? What about someone who works at one of these companies? How should they approach the boss or department head about implementing changes? Wayne, this is so interesting. Do you go over any of this information in your book, “Full Circle Marketing?” How can you help business owners in making a positive change in company culture? Tell us about your book a little bit… How can someone order a copy of your book,

Ugly Mug Marketing Wayne Mullins If you are in business – especially if you have an online business – it is almost 100% guaranteed you need a website. In this day and time, a website is the “business card” of just about everyone. I remember back the late 1980's when I had my own business… I knew I was professional looking because I had a great business card! Amen! I know I'm showing my age – but if you were doing business back then – you were right there with me! Amen! If you were pitching a client or prospective client, almost to the person, they would ask, “Do you have a business card?” You better have one… otherwise, you were considered untrustworthy… Anyway – fast forward 40 years and here we are today! If all you have is a business card, you are running way behind the crowd today… If you are pitching your services to someone, what are they going to ask in today's business climate? “Do you have a website?” If you say, “No, but here is my business card…” Well, that's about as far as you are going to get… Let's talk about websites… There are some places that will give you a free website (and it looks like)… there are some places that will use AI to build you a simple website – but good luck trying to personalize to your clients liking… Then, there is the “do it yourself” crowd out there… and they are really limited in the professionalism and ability to create something spectacular by their own technological limitations. Amen! But, Brother Bob, those pretty websites may look… pretty… but do they draw in the type of clients I am looking for? Will they convert visitors into clients or will they just be, “pretty?” To help us tackle this difficult subject, our guest today is the founder of a revolutionary agency that can, not only help you build a website, but build out the other facets of your business, too! You see, just a good looking website is not enough… you need to have a marketing strategy… you need a customer service strategy and other things… and ALL OF THESE need to work together. If one part breaks down or one part is not doing what it is designed to do – your business suffers. Amen! Wayne Mullins is the founder of “Ugly Mug Marketing!” I love that name… Wayne and his team focus on helping you achieve YOUR desired results. Not just a nice website – that's just the one aspect. They will help you marketing, social media, events, SEO and the list goes on and on. Wayne Mullins and his team are “results oriented” in everything they do! This why they believe “Ugly Mug Marketing” can help you build the business of your dreams, too. Amen! Wayne is also the author of the book, “Full Circle Marketing,” as well. Amen! Help me welcome to the program, Wayne Mullins! Wayne, I've been looking forward to this interview and can't wait to hear all about “Ugly Mug Marketing!” First question I always start with is, other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Wayne Mullins?” Let's start with the big elephant in the room… why name your business, “Ugly Mug Marketing?” What makes you different from other marketing support companies out there? Culture eats strategy for breakfast: Focusing on building a high-performance, self-accountable culture will transform your business and life. In this enlightening podcast episode, co-hosts Wendy Sellers and JC are joined by guest Wayne Mullins, a marketing expert, the founder of Ugly Mug Marketing, and the author of Full Circle Marketing. Mullins brings to the forefront the pivotal role of workplace culture in determining an organization's success. Quoting famously that "culture eats strategy for breakfast", Mullins shares his regrets from the past where he once deemed culture as subsidiary, stating that this failing mindset can lead to the formation of a mediocre workplace environment. Mullins highlights the silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic, pointing at its role in underscoring the necessity of fostering a healthy culture within teams despite the challenges. He also credits the younger generation as being instrumental in pushing for businesses that emphasize their employees' wellness as much as their client services. For new team leaders aiming to nourish a beneficial team environment, Mullins shares helpful advice in the form of four decisive questions every leader must address: 'Where are we going?', 'Why does this matter?', 'What is expected of them?', and 'How and when will you measure my performance?'. This episode serves as an insightful guide for those in managerial roles or for anyone aspiring to be an effective leader. It emphasizes the role of culture, clear vision, and employee satisfaction in carving the path to organizational success. As Founder of Ugly Mug Marketing, he's inspired clients from more than 100 industries and his work directly influences more than 250K entrepreneurs/year. Here are the great points that we talked about:  The importance of understanding the true essence of marketing as the ability to attract, retain and convert clients into brand evangelists. Managing client expectations is crucial for satisfaction and advocacy. Identifying and overcoming the primary constraint that hinders business growth. The value of having a coach or mentor to help recognize blind spots and streamline the path to success. The proactive approach to referrals by asking for specific introductions rather than making general requests. The significance of two daily questions: What have I done to attract a new client today? What have I done to keep and convert a client into an evangelist? The five stages of scaling a business: Me, We, They, Machine and Creative Destruction The balance between alignment and autonomy within a team is key for successful scaling. The difference between using social media as a megaphone (showing up and throwing up) versus using it as a telephone (engaging in dialogue and building relationships). In today's show, Paul Barron and Paul Molinari break down the insight of evangelists vs influencers and why this can make a difference in your restaurant. We have a special guest, Wayne Mullins, author of the book Full Circle Marketing. Wayne is here to talk about how restaurants can turn customers into brand evangelists versus just influencers.Wayne's book dives deep into the natural laws and psychology behind how a customer transitions into a raving fan who voluntarily markets your restaurant. As Wayne explains, strategic ways exist to create this customer journey that tap into fundamental human behaviors. The Differences That MatterA key difference Wayne outlines is that influencers may temporarily boost awareness, but evangelists organically spread positive word-of-mouth about your restaurant for the long term. This leads to sustainable growth versus short-term hype. Some exciting tactics Wayne has seen work include surprise and delight rewards programs and referral campaigns. These encourage customers to share their exceptional experiences. Personalizing interactions and getting to know your regulars pays off tremendously.Wayne notes that restaurants and hospitality businesses generally have great potential to create these evangelists. Touchpoints can be designed to excite, engage, and convert customers into fans by focusing on the entire customer journey from booking to follow-up.Don't Miss This Episode!I'd highly recommend listening to the whole discussion as Wayne and our hosts dive deep into more examples of companies getting this right. The key takeaway is that designing intentional customer experiences creates that vital emotional connection that makes someone go from satisfied to loyal brand champion. Meet Wayne MullinsWayne is a husband, father of 4, entrepreneur, and the Founder of Ugly Mug Marketing, creator of the Freelance Accelerator, and author of Full Circle Marketing. He's an out-of-the-box, against the grain, thinker and it has more than paid off for his company and clients. He leads from the heart and is passionate and unapologetic about doing so. As Founder & CEO of Ugly Mug Marketing of one of the most unique and successful marketing agencies in the world, Wayne has personally trained more than 20,000 marketers, launched NY Times Bestsellers, and helped a client grow from $20M to more than $600M in less than 5 years. How do you know if your business's culture is sabotaging your marketing efforts?Yeah. That's a, that's a great question. And it's a challenging question because to begin, Lori, I think we have to come to the realization that often for us as entrepreneurs or for us as marketers, this thing called our business or the business that we're marketing for, it's our baby. We love this thing. And sometimes we don't want to admit that our baby is actually ugly. And the truth is that sometimes our baby is a bit ugly and we need to look at it through that objective lens so that we can determine what is actually happening and what is not. So the first place that I love to tell people to start is to get some candid feedback from your actual customers, those interacting with your organization, purchasing your product, purchasing your services. And that can be a little bit daunting and it can be a little bit confusing for people because by default, what we typically do is we go ask the people who we think are going to say great things, right? We ask our friends, our longtime customers, and those people rarely are willing to say things that are going to hurt our feelings or step on our toes. So, it's important to find those who are willing to tell us the honest truth about what it's like doing business with us.Why is it so important to engage with prospects and customers on a personal level? So we live in a world now that is, you know, there's some great quote or analogy here that I'm going to completely botch and mess up, but basically we live in this hyper connected world, right?Where everyone is connected to everyone online and yet we live in a world where people don't have that many real connections anymore. And so one of the simplest yet most impactful things that you can do is learn to connect with your prospects and your customers on a personal level. So very simple things that you can do that will immediately calls you to stand out, send handwritten thank you notes, send birthday cards in the mail. Any points of personal interaction like that are going to cause you to immediately stand head and shoulders over your competition. Not because they can't do those things, but because they're so busy looking for the next big hack or the next, you know, cheat code or whatever it may be that they're unwilling and undisciplined to do the fundamental things that we know actually do work.Connect with Wayne!Connect on LinkedInUgly Mug MarketingFreelance AcceleratorFull Circle Marketing

Wayne shared his entrepreneurial journey, explaining that his marketing and business degree led him to the sales profession, which eventually enabled him to start his own business. The name of his company is based on a quote from ad agency founder David Ogilvy, emphasizing the importance of effectiveness over aesthetics in marketing.Mindset, Culture, and Entrepreneurial TensionWayne discussed the importance of mindset and continuous effort in building a high-performance culture within creative sectors, contrasting it with the common entrepreneurial mindset that views team members as a necessary evil. He emphasized that culture requires ongoing attention and effort, and highlighted the tension between alignment and autonomy. wayne suggested that to reset or reprogram an existing, perhaps successful, but culturally adrift company, an apology from leadership for allowing the culture to slip and for becoming complacent is necessary. He stressed the importance of clarity on expectations and avoiding the path of least resistance. wayne also suggested that entrepreneurs should avoid being a hero all the time and instead empower others to help solve problems.Encouraging Self-Sufficiency for Leadership DevelopmentWayne discussed the importance of shifting from being the sole answer provider to encouraging team members to think for themselves. He shared his method of asking questions instead of providing immediate answers, emphasizing the value of fostering leadership qualities among team members. He also acknowledged that this approach may initially result in more mistakes but stressed the importance of tolerating these mistakes as part of the learning process. Strategic Marketing & Daily ImprovementB.D. and wayne discussed the significance of strategic marketing, particularly in challenging times. wayne emphasized the value of strategic thinking and compared it to building a boat from a box of Legos. He also stressed the importance of daily incremental improvement. wayne shared his philosophy of daily improvement and the compounding effect of small, consistent steps. He emphasized the necessity of seeking and applying good advice, tailored to the company's current stage. He advised against getting distracted by long-term goals and instead urged staying mindful of short-term objectives.Entrepreneurial Efficiency: Daily Routine Discussionwayne shared his philosophy of maintaining a consistent daily routine, which he found to be highly efficient and effective as an entrepreneur. He revealed that he follows the same morning and evening routines every day, which he likened to "capstones" that structure his day. His routine includes meditation, reading, and physical exercise. He also touched upon the power of affirmations in his routine, even if not directly. B.D. asked about the specifics of wayne's routine, but the details were not provided in the transcript.Diverse Thought, Shared Goals: Managing Conflict in Growth-Mindset TeamsB.D. and wayne discussed how to handle conflicts within a team that has diverse thought processes but shared goals. wayne emphasized the importance of incremental progress and a growth mindset, and how these principles can unify a team regardless of personal routines or ethos. He also talked about the range of clients they work with, from startups to large corporations, all of whom are growth-oriented and willing to challenge the status quo. The conversation ended abruptly without a clear conclusion.Book Recommendations and Consistency in ReadingWayne Mullins discussed his reading habits, mentioning "The Mountain Is You" by Brianna Weist and "The Choice" by Dr. Edith Edgar as particularly powerful books. He emphasized the importance of consistency, stating that it leads to remarkable outcomes in all aspects of life. wayne also mentioned his website, ugmugmarketing.com, as the best place for connecting with him and his team. He recommended his Instagram account, @fireyourself, for more personal content.https://www.uglymugmarketing.com/

Wayne, welcome to the show. Thank you, Steve. Thanks for the intro. I'm excited for our chat. When we briefly chatted before, it sounds like we have a lot in common and shared beliefs, so I'm excited for this. Me, too. I think we have some good topics here. Let's start with your journey. Yours is a particularly interesting one. I guess that's another commonality. I used to listen to Zig Ziglar's CDs as well. How did you go from being an ambitious kid, listening to these CDs to selling ads, starting a landscaping business, and ending up running a marketing agency? In rewind, that story unfolds exactly like you just said it. For whatever reason, Steve, one year for Christmas, my parents gave me some CDs from Zig Ziglar. I don't know what led to that decision to give me those CDs, but they gave me some CDs. For those who don't know what CDs are, it was back before everything was digital. I'm dating myself slightly. They gave me those CDs, and Zig's CDs were on selling. Over the course of listening to those CDs, Zig sold me on the profession of selling. I knew from that point forward that I wanted to go into sales. I altered what I was going to do right out of college. I wanted to get a few years of experience in sales, and that's exactly what I did. I wish I could tell you that I was good at sales when I started, but Steve, I was absolutely horrible. I have this one trait, which is stubbornness. That served me well in that instance. Sometimes my stubbornness doesn't serve me well. In this case, it served me well because I kept learning, kept growing, and literally kept knocking on doors, having doors slammed to my face, but I kept on going. Over the course of three years, I've honed those skills. What I noticed was that I was selling more and more for my company. The amount of revenue I was bringing in for the company kept growing and growing. Although my pay was increasing, those numbers kept getting further apart. In other words, there was a bigger gap between what I was bringing in and my pay. I had this dangerous thought that pops in my head sometimes, "What if I went and did something for myself? What if I went and started something for myself?" The only other skill I had at that time was cutting grass. I'd cut grass all through high school and college. I decided to leave a good corporate sales job Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 5:00, all of the perks and benefits, and start a lawn and landscape company. I'm in Louisiana. Summertimes in Louisiana are not fun places to be. This was going to be outside most of the days. Over the course of a three-year period, I grew that company from a startup to a very large company. We were 1 of the 2 largest in our region. It was December, and I decided to put the business up for sale. I was ready for the next challenge. Within two weeks, I had two different offers on that business. It was during the course of growing that business, though, to that point that a lot of our actual customers from the lawn care company and a lot of other business owners in the area started coming to me asking, "How are you growing? What are you doing to grow your business this quickly?" At the end of the day, that answer was marketing. We were doing some very unique and very creative things with marketing. Those conversations turned into consulting,

Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies

Not sure why you're stuck trying to scale your agency? Growth vs Scaling? What's the difference? There are four main reasons some agencies never scale. Today's guest has accumulated nearly 15 years of experience in the agency business and shares how he stays focused in order to scale. He also shares lessons that helped him get through difficult and why is usually the agency owners standing in their own way of scaling. Wayne Mullins is the founder of Ugly Mug Marketing, a boutique agency with 14 years of experience. The agency's design approach places a lot of emphasis on content and understanding the audience to convey an effective message. Their core value is that results should never be compromised for the sake of "good" design. In this interview, we'll discuss: Why your agency needs a north star to stay focused. The difference between scaling vs. growth. How agency owners sabotage their growth by not adapting. Our team loves using Verblio because of the ease of their process and their large pool of crowd-sourced writers. Why You Need a North Star  Don't let the name fool you; Ugly Mug represents the agency's philosophy of prioritizing results. It originates from a quote by David Ogilvy, where he said “I rather you show me an ad that's ugly and effective over one that is beautiful but isn't." This quote became Wayne's north star, keeping him from getting sidetracked by awards and accolades. Instead, he believes that agency owners should focus on solving clients' problems and getting results. What's the Difference Between Scaling and Growth? Scaling a business and growing it is often confused, with the latter becoming a buzzword. According to Wayne, scaling involves having more free time and working only in the areas you choose. However, growth leads to time constraints and doing things you hate. To scale, you need to have the right mindset, systems, and processes in place. 4 Reasons Why Some Agencies Are Not Scaling The owner's mindset is the main reason why agencies fail to scale. In the beginning, Wayne's ego played a significant role, and he enjoyed being the hero who saved the day. However, he realized that he needed a clear vision of where he wanted the agency to go to communicate it to his team. That way, they could make better decisions, and he wouldn't become a hindrance to growth. Many agencies fall into the scale hustle trap when they hit certain levels of revenue or employee numbers, believing that they only need to work harder to get to the next level. However, the key to scaling is having the right systems and processes in place, documenting them, and trusting your team to have autonomy. To scale, you need to balance alignment and authority. Without autonomy, everything is controlled, and without alignment, there's chaos. Everyone must be aligned with the agency's vision, and team members must have autonomy to make decisions. Ideally, you want to stay around the complexity line, which indicates that you're growing. The faster you scale, the more chaos you feel, but if you pull back, you're sabotaging future growth. Feeling overwhelmed means that there's too much on your plate, and you need to adapt your processes to grow. Wayne's philosophy is that agencies should focus on delivering results and solving clients' problems rather than just winning awards. Scaling requires the right mindset, systems, and processes, as well as a team aligned with the agency's vision and autonomy to make decisions. Don't be afraid of complexity, adapt to it, and keep growing.   Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset? Over the past 20 years, Wayne Mullins has proven himself a versatile professional. Wayne has worked with clients in over 100 industries, from nonprofit organizations to multi-million -dollar enterprises. He expertises in helping companies market themselves, find deals, and accomplish significant acquisitions. In this episode, he explains how to structure marketing in order to scale your company better. Most Companies Overlook Marketing The bulk of Wayne's clients seeks his expertise because they are entrepreneurs who have come to realize their marketing is not effective. With so many functional sectors in a company, marketing is often left out, this often happens because many managers charge the marketing of an entire company to a single employee who is fulfilling a role and doing marketing at the same time; this approach does not work. A strategic approach is a better option, putting someone dedicated in order to achieve more. This is the difference between a company with effective marketing, and a company with poor marketing. Marketing In Acquisitions: Targeting The Audience Marketing for companies is not simply about giving credence or justice to your existing products. If you are positioning your company for acquisition, marketing is also essential. You need to ensure that the message you are sending is attractive and appealing to prospective buyers. To ensure that, see the following items: Make potential buyers your target audience: If you're looking to be acquired, make sure that you are speaking to those prospective buyers in all your marketing moves. Keep the value proposition in mind: Do you already know what your value proposition is to these potential buyers? Your public marketing affects acquisition: When you pitch to acquire another company, those owners are concerned about how you will treat their team members. Keep in mind that your public marketing reflects your relationship with your team. Strategic Communication With Employees Imagine being hired by a company that just starts delegating without even communicating the company's culture. Terrible, right? That is why a communication strategy for employees is crucial to your reputation. The team plays an important role in productivity, so it has to be treated with care. Many people do not even realize that marketing also has this function within a company. Anytime a change is going to take place – whether it is an acquisition or a sale – there's always going to be some grief by the team members. Wayne works to craft internal marketing messages to help them move through that loss and grief process quickly, so the company can get back to scale much faster. Wayne advises companies to do this by helping them realize that the potential losses are not nearly as bad as they believe. The Message Format Is Important One of the larger questions asked is how does a company or manager communicate the message to the employee? One approach is simply an e-mail. This is an easy method to communicate your message, but it's simply not the best way. A much better approach is via sending a printed letter to each employee. This is a common marketing strategy that adds an element of personalization, which conveys to the employee that you value them. By taking the time to be personal in your correspondence with an employee, you set the tone for the relationship from that point forward. Relationship Marketing As A Small Business Tip Wayne's company is in a small market, but it reaches millionaire customers via its long-term game strategy, meaning their marketing strategy is not about a transaction, but a relationship. Have you ever stopped to reflect on how your company connects with people? By focusing on marketing to develop relationships with other professionals and people, his company ensures an alliance with individuals who can add to his business. Organic Marketing For Scaling First, you need to decide what your business wants to achieve, then you utilize marketing strategies effectively. Marketing to scale is organic, unlike growth marketing, which often needs inorganic impulses. Scaling your company is not necessarily about revenue or rate of growth, the key component for entrepreneurs is that synergy must take place you. The growth is taking place because of others' inputs, alongside your own. Marketing Is About Communication Wayne shares that a common mistake is thinking of marketing as something to produce for the public and prospects; in reality, marketing is about communication and persuasion, so the intentionality behind the messaging matters. With clear intent to articulate marketing internally, you can overcome most of the obstacles that come along with buying, selling, and acquiring. Marketing expert Wayne Mullins discusses the best leverage move you can make when investing back into the company: your team. Wayne's team is made almost entirely of people who fit into the “great resignation” era–those with a reputation for being lazy, obsessed with social media, and a poor work ethic. Yet, Wayne's team has been active in their positions for six to eight years. As he will explain, it's not about the cool snack bar or workout rooms but the culture that you foster every day. In this episode of The Prosperity Perspective, listen alongside host Liam Leonard as our guest elaborates on the two ways to invest back into your people and make an impact: 1) Genuinely care for them and make the choice that will benefit THEM, not the company, and 2) Find ways to help each individual become a better version of themselves. Reap the reward of watching people lean into who they can become and prove your values, because as Wayne will explain, “Your values aren't your values until they cost you something.” 3 Key TakeawaysYour team is your biggest leverage that you can use in your company; invest in them by connecting on an individual basis and watch them elevate the business.Your values can't truly be proven until the moment they will cost you something. Don't hesitate to put the rubber to the road and act on those values you set beforehand for the business. When you reach the sales call, your job should be all but done. Make your marketing do the work for you so that the customer is already sold. ResourcesWebsite: uglymugmarketing.comFacebookInstagramLinkedInAbout Wayne MullinsWayne is a husband, father of 4, founder, CEO, entrepreneur and author.
