We were born into poverty.Living without a Father and with an alcoholic Mother forced me  to make difficult decisions at an early age. I needed to come up with creative solutions to everyday problems in order to survive, whether it was to bargain for food or to find a place to sleep. For me, developing an entrepreneurial mindset was not an option, but rather a necessity, even when I was only six years old.    In 2005, I walked into a new family through adoption, in a new country, to start a new life.At the time I knew that adoption was a step closer to a better life, but I did not know the things I would have to give up in order to have that better life.Adoption taught me how to appreciate. I appreciated the warmth of home filled with love and respect that my parents offered me.The transition from poverty to affluence was more than an outer transformation; it required me to go through an inner transformation too. I had to become comfortable with change in order to survive.Children, who are adopted, have no option, but to change. They have no option, but to give up pieces of themselves, such as their birth name, their birth family, friends, their native language, culture and memories.With the love and support of my family, I was fortunate to overcome these changes. In fact, I was fortunate to experience two spectrums of life: from poverty to wealth. I was not only fortunate to be adopted by a caring loving family, but also to have the opportunity to graduate from both high school and college.I entered Kent State University with a passion to study Russian, as a way to keep in touch with my birth family in Russia. Though soon into my college career, I also gravitated towards entrepreneurship, with the realization that I was already an entrepreneur.  On a broader scale, I realized that my life had a mission, a mission that required me to learn from my own journey, and to contribute to a greater cause. What do your parents do when you're diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis? Bethany Bryan's parents took a deep breath and then prepared for the worse but always told their daughter that she wasn't CF and she could do whatever she wanted to do. Good advice for the 15-plus years the CF didn't present a problem and then...Bethany was truly a woman behind the smile and never told her friends that she was struggling to breathe. Her parents battled their own mental health issues and her "problems" were small compared to theirs. She believed her FEARS were bigger than her sickness and she just had to conquer the fears, so she did until she couldn't. Her solution? Stop the traditional medications for CF and LET GOD. Soon she realized that dying wasn't part of THE PLAN for her life and she let GOD bring new medications into her life. Today she is thriving and telling her story through her new book, My Story Continues. This is one Stand Up & Speak Up story that needs to be heard. According to the Mayo Clinic, Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body. Cystic fibrosis affects the cells that produce mucus, sweat and digestive juices. These secreted fluids are normally thin and slippery. But in people with CF, a defective gene causes the secretions to become sticky and thick. Instead of acting as lubricants, the secretions plug up tubes, ducts and passageways, especially in the lungs and pancreas. Although cystic fibrosis is progressive and requires daily care, people with CF are usually able to attend school and work. They often have a better quality of life than people with CF had in previous decades. Improvements in screening and treatments mean that people with CF now may live into their mid- to late 30s or 40s, and some are living into their 50s. Nine decades-plus can teach you a lot about life, but an hour with your 92 year old DAD will feed your soul forever. This Stand Up & Speak Up episode was another Labor of Love for me and for our family. Too many of my friends lament the passing of their parents but more wish they had another hour, or another phone call with their folks. "If only" is what I was hearing and I didn't want to have those regrets. Dr. Jack Butz has led an extraordinary life. His father passed at 46 years old and Jack lived in a home with "lot of women" which included his mom, his aunt, his sister and a friend of hers, and probably some other "old ladies" that I'm missing. There was no "free ride" for Jack and he put himself through the University of PA and Penn Dental School. The Air Force provided a good starting point for his career as a dentist but life in Woodstock, Vermont cemented his "working years" until his retirement to Florida. Author of "My 50 Golden Years", Dr. Jack chronicles the lives of his 10 special Golden Retrievers and he admits that his last one, Angel, was his favorite. Family history took on a golden spin when he wrote about the dogs (births/deaths) and threw in nuggets about his four children! Seeing the world through the eyes of a gentle GIANT who has seen it all the last 92 years was tender yet realistic. It's time to take an hour with your parents if you're are fortunate to still have them around. Life isn't guaranteed and each day is an opportunity to learn.
