Send us a Text Message.Hi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. When I began this podcast, I didn't know too much about the key shows of the end of 1.0. The years 1999 and 2000 weren't exactly lost to me, but it was harder then than it is now to get the most recent recordings. And even if you were lucky enough to get a recording of a recent show at the end of the century–or the beginning of the new one–chances are that the recording didn't quite capture the intricacies and details that you would need to hear in order to appreciate what the band was playing at the time. That's a long way to say that today's guest–Will Little-shines a ton of light on the technical aspect of what Phish was up to, musically speaking, during the summer, 2000 tour. Will chose to discuss his memories from July 4, 2000 when Phish played the 2nd of two nights at Camden. While many guests on Attendance Bias, and I'm guilty of this as well, focus on the fan perspective of their chosen show, Will focuses mostly on what made the soundscapes and atmospheric playing of 2000 so interesting and compelling. For years, I've known that soundboard recordings of this tour were high-level, dense stuff but never had the vocabulary to explain why. I still don't have the vocabulary, but luckily we have Will here to help out.And boy, did he pick the right show. July 4, 2000 encapsulates the “2000” sound as well as any other show that year. In fact, the second set is a legendary 5-song second set that opens with a 30-minute Gotta Jibboo. If you're the type of fan who likes to press play, lay back, listen, and then wonder “how are they doing this?!”, then this is your show and your episode. If you haven't figured it out by now, Will is a multi-instrumentalist from the south-east who is typically involved in a number of projects, including longtime Asheville-based band East Coast Dirt, and by the time this episode airs, he'll be playing with Phish tribute band, “Nectar: A Picture of Phish.” He'll give more details about his projects once the conversation starts. So let's join Will to chat about the the nuance of specialized guitar effects, what the funk siren really is, and whether or not Backwards Down the Number Line is a great Phish song as we break down July, 2000 in Camden.

What you think is what you say. What you say is what you do. What you do becomes a habit. What becomes your habit becomes your character. And your character is what determines your future.  (taken from Will Latif’s TEDx Talk: How to Become the Best Version of Yourself) As June comes to a close, a month with a focus on Father’s Day and Gun Violence Awareness, I’m honored to bring you an important conversation that touches on both themes with poet, speaker, advocate and father Will Latif Little.   As you’ll learn in this episode, Will has a profound story to tell, one that began with an upbringing in a single family parent home with his four sisters in Philadelphia, PA. Without his father or a father figure, and impacted by his environment, Will began to venture away from the ideals he was shaped by in church, dropping out of high school in the 10th grade, and becoming involved in the Philadelphia drug trade and a shooting that resulted in the death of a young man. This ultimately landed Will in prison for a 10-20 year sentence on a murder conviction at the age of 19.   Fatherhood was a seminal experience for Will. It was the knowledge of becoming a father, during the time of his incarceration, that became a catalyst for Will to turn his life around, motivating him to get his GED and educate himself through reading books that enlightened him. Through that process, Will says that what he thought was passing the time actually helped him become a man.  After ten long years, rehabilitated and reformed, Will was released from prison to start a new life, as a free man but challenged by the difficulty of gaining steady employment due to his criminal record. Not wanting to go back to a life of drug dealing and gun carrying, Will decided to invest in a career as a barber.  In his spare time, Will developed a program calledPoetree N Motion that would show young and older people how to overcome obstacles in life. And he began to share his story far and wide, taking the stage at a TEDx event, at public meetings where he advocates for education and emotional intelligence trainings, mentoring in the Philadelphia Prison System, and revealing his experience in a new award-winning documentary called Behind the Bullet.   It was important to me that this not be an interview solely about Will’stransgressions but about his whole life, his full humanity and his wisdom across all the E.P.I.C. guideposts. I learned so much from my time with Will...about the power of resilience, a strength passed from his own mother, the enduring possibility of forgiveness and redemption, the power of mindset, and about pushing through our discomfort, something Will challenged me to explore through the metaphor of running. Ultimately, this episode is about hope and transformation...And I hope you’ll be forever changed, as I have been, by your connection to Will and his story.   Much appreciation, Additional Reflections: With this special episode today, I close a series of conversations I set out to record on the intersectional impact of gun violence for the Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative. This one differs from the others in that it is a deeply personal redemption story. A story of a man who took the life of another human being through gun violence and has come out the other side committed to educating others so they don’t make the same mistakes that he did. It’s important to note that Will’s perspective and journey is uniquely his own, that he takes a tremendous amount of personal responsibility, and focuses his change efforts on building emotional intelligence. Will also shares that there is systemic racism, a justice system that is not always just, and environmental conditions that contribute to the issue of gun violence. After listening to this conversation and exploring the links to Will’s work, I hope you’ll also spend some time with some of the other episodes I’ve recorded and with links I’ve included in the show notes to understand the big picture context beneath this deeply personal story. And to find your own path and commitment to dismantling systemic racism and gun violence.  There is so much work to do.   This Episode is Dedicated by: Vince from the While Black Podcast Vince has always displayed an entrepreneurial and activist spirit. Today, legendary keynote speaker, barber, and poet Will Little once again joins his friend Christopher. They share an insightful conversation on redemption, forgiveness, and personal transformation. “We are not having the conversation they need to hear.” - Will Little on young men who feel angered or disconnected An Eye for an Eye for Most How would you feel if someone killed your brother, Will would ask people. For most, the first response is to kill. It's what they feel is right, that there's no other recourse for them. This kind of thinking presents a myriad of challenges for young people. “They'll have no other authority but to hear the voice of the streets, even if they're not built by that, even if they're not in the streets like that.” - Will Little Voice of the Streets Sometimes, even the unwilling are forced to take up the gun. After all, it's what the streets say they must do. But Will has made it his life mission to make people realize that it's not a path they need to take. Along with others with the same mindset, Will has been sharing his story to let people know that they can be who they are. While they grew up thinking certain things were real, they can shape their own reality. Understanding all of these brings hopes of growth and learning. Presenting Possibilities Ever since he started speaking with groups of young guys, Will quickly learned the most pressing challenge in transforming the lives of others. “A lot of them see possibility in their life. They just think they're secluded to this four-block radius where they live at and where they're from.” - Will Little To hear more about how Will Little shows young people who he is so they can all make a difference, download and listen to the episode. Bio: Growing up in a fraught environment, Will dropped out of school early. He got involved with gangs shortly afterwards, which led to a gunfight that resulted in taking another man's life. He has since served his sentence in jail for the murder, and now Will goes around having conversations with people. Will shares his story with youngsters going through same challenges he was in back in the day. Now a keynote speaker, he shows people the possibilities in their lives and how they can transform themselves for the better. This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Christopher Lochhead. Chris is a retired, 3-time CMO, entrepreneur, and co-author of Play Bigger and his latest book, Niche Down. He started his first business at 18 and has been called a “Human Exclamation Point” by Fast Company and “Off-putting to some” by The Economist. He is a keynote speaker, a blogger, and is a founding board member of the non-profit, 1 Life Fully Lived. One of the things he is best known for these days is being the host of the highly popular Legends and Losers podcast. As he says, “I’m a dyslexic paperboy from Montreal with Scottish roots. Over thirty years in business I earned a PhD from the school of hard knocks, drank a lot of whiskey, experienced the bliss of winning, the pain of failure and learned how to laugh about the whole thing. One thing about Chris is that he doesn’t mince words, he’s direct, and doesn’t put up with any BS, but man can he teach you a lot about how to succeed in business and in life. www.LegendsandLosers.com Chris grew up in Montreal, Canada in what he calls a “struggling, but loving family.” He got thrown out of school at 18 and found out he is dyslexic as 21. He went on the find out that he has a lot of “learning differences.” At 18 years old, he didn’t have a ton of choices, but one of them was to start his own business – no so much as a way up, but a way out. By the time he 28, he had sold his companies to groups in Silicon Valley and came to live there full time. He went on to become the CMO of 3 publicly traded companies, the last one, Mercury Interactive, which was sold to HP for $4.5 billion. Since then he has done advisory work for venture back startups, wrote Play Bigger, and for the last few years, he has been focused on the Legends and Losers Podcast and writing his latest book, Niche Down. Most important lessons about life and business you’ve learned to this point? We get tricked in life to thinking the pathway to success is about fitting in when in truth it is not true. Legendary people, the Misfit Entrepreneurs are original, unique, they take new ground, and they are different. In a world that teaches us to fit in, highly successful people make their place in the world – not find their place in the world. Life works best for us when we are being us – not trying to be or fit into something we are not. How have you learned to unleash your Inner Misfit, your genius, over the years? “Follow your passion” and “Hustle, Hustle, Hustle” are some of the dumbest pieces of advice given to people. Having the courage to stand out, follow your difference and use it to create the life you want is hard for people to do – but it is what they need to do. Mercenaries vs. Missionaries: When things get really tough, Mercenaries tap out, but Missionaries will crawl through whatever is needed to reach their goal. Work on big problems that you care about and that really make a difference in the world. “If you can create or design yourself to be the person or entrepreneur you want to be, by definition you are going to be painting your own painting.” The reason “Follow your passion” is such stupid advice is that is can send you down this path of what is my passion instead of asking “How can I truly make a difference…” Also, if you follow your passion in something everyone else is following, then you most likely won’t be able to stand out. At the 11:40 mark, Chris gives an example of what this means and why niching down is so lucrative in today’s world. “Hustle, Hustle, Hustle” is idiotic because as an entrepreneur or innovator, if you need to be told that it will take hustle or grit, you are already in trouble. It is a pre-requisite to be able to hustle It is the person who designs and ultimately dominates that niche who become successful. The big mind-twist is that it is niche that makes the brand. It’s the niche that makes the company. It’s the category that makes the person – not the other way around. If you are hustling in a niche that is already being dominated by someone else – you are hustling in a niche that someone else owns, will always be compared to them, and be at a strategic disadvantage. You are playing their game and competing for at best, a piece of the economics. You must “hustle” in a niche that you can design and dominate At the 19 min mark, Chris answers the question, What are the most important things you have found about how to niche down? What creates a new niche is either taking an existing problem and redesigning or reimagining it or looking at a problem that nobody really thought of… Example of an existing problem is AirBnb redesigning where we stay when we travel, and an example of a new problem is a “Sushirito” to the problem of being able to have Sushi on the go. “We are at the beginning of a niche-nado” Is there a set of steps that someone can take to find their niche? Chris makes note of a book called “Thinking Wrong,” and uses the idea of it to look at the opposite of everything you know about a business/product/service, etc. to blow open new thinking. For example, create a bike that doesn’t work in any way. Start by doing this. In a way, we are living in the 1800’s when it comes to boom in technology that we are about to go through. Today’s solutions will cause tomorrow’s problems. Ask yourself, “Of all this cool new stuff, what problems will this create that can be solved?” Points from Play Bigger that are relevant to entrepreneurs? Design your own category. Most entrepreneurs focus on designing a product and business around it instead of designing the category. The Magic Triangle is when you get product, company, and category design to come together. This is where the magic happens and you get an AirBnb. On average, the category leader earns 70% of the market cap in a category. Go after being a “Big E” entrepreneur Can you go deeper on the Magic Triangle? As entrepreneurs, we fall in love with our product or solutions. But people don’t want to buy solutions, they want to buy problems (really the removal of them – so their focus is on the problem. Great category designers are evangelists, but not for their product, but for their category. Using Salesforce.com as example. First design a new type of product. In Salesforce’s case, it was CRM Second, build and design a new type of company. Salesforce started the idea of SAAS or subscription. Third, teach the world to think in a new way. Salesforce showed the world a new way to think about software. It was a complete 180. The big AHA is to fall in love with the problem and not the solution. What else is important from a marketing standpoint to help businesses standout? Over 90% of the work done on branding is a waste of time At its core, branding is all about yelling and screaming about who I am or what I am. We get thousands of marketing messages a day and we don’t have a context for it, it doesn’t matter to it. The way the brain works is category first, brand second At the 44 min mark, Chris gives an example of how you fix the brand first problem. You’ve got a keynote on how to create a Legendary Life. Can you give us a little taste of how to do that? First, you must make a decision about who you are going to be in your life You can design your life and create it. If you don’t believe that, then you live legendary. The biggest way to have a legendary life is to co-create the life with those that you want to partner with to do so. The greatest reward in life is to co-design the life with the ones you love and then live out that design. Who has been the most surprising guest on Legends and Losers and why? Entrepreneur, Author, and Speaker, Will Little, who is also a convicted killer. Chris never thought that he could be friends with a convicted killer. But, it is who Will became in jail and since coming out being a force for good that makes him so unique. Bill Walton, one of the greatest basketball players of all time. A conversation with him is unlike any other. David Saxe – Co-founder of PayPal and Yammer. Incredible insight into how to sell a company. He unpacks the difference between a product hook and a value proposition.   Best Quote: “We become known for the niche that we own…”   Chris's Misfit 3: Follow your different... The #1 thing people say they are afraid of in life and business is public failure. There will be a ton of it. It’s called “Losery.” Embrace the Losery… The most legendary people have the most courage. Tap into yours.

Change Your Story, Change Your Life

MURDER STORY There are schools, and there are schools. Some are highly respected by society. They offer book learning, a competitive grading system, and a fast track to the top of the social ladder. Some of these schools  have have higher prestige, status, and celebrity than others. A diploma or degree  from one of these institutions can open many doors that lead to respect, social acceptance, and wealth. The street can also serve as a school. So can a prison. Your education in these hard knuckle schools will not earn you society’s blessings or certificates that open doors. But they can definitley give you a priceless education. They can teach you survival and a profound understanding of human psychology,  They can unleash creativity. They can cultivate compassion; They can offer you hard won lessons of  great wisdom. These schools can destroy you. If they don’t, they can forge integrity and strength of character and prepare you to enrich the world with your unique brand of authenticity and contribution. Will Latif Little forged his character and special gifts on the streets of Philadelphia and in Holmesburg Prison, a terrifying penitentiary known as the Terradome to its inmates. Will Little served ten years in the Terradome for murder. His own tagline describes him as a man who went from convicted murderer to committed life coach. Here are some of his accolades: He leaves people forever changed. No one forgets Will Little. He’s a category of one. Those words do not express unearned praise. Will played a high stakes game to win them. It was a life and death game. Will emerged from prison, a wise, loving, intuitive, and compassionate person with a gift for healing others. He heals damaged and disturbed psyches; he heals souls. He is an author, speaker, and mentor to troubled youth. Give yourself the special gift of hearing this authentic inspiring man on today’s episode of Change Your Story, Change Your Life.
