Today we are hearing the story of how Jessica Cummings built her floral event business, We Are Wildflowers.  Jess has had a unique approach to growing her business slowly through friendships and now does 80+ weddings a year with a merry band of floral freelancing friends.  The We Are Wildflowers crew is committed to sustainable floristry that highlights locally-grown stems and uses zero floral foam.  Lots of great tips for event design workflow in this episode!  Jess is also a musician and finds being in a band (Boozewa) a great way to release stress from flowers and recharge her creativity.     This podcast is brought to you by the Philadelphia Floral Guild, a collective of flower farms in the mid-Atlantic region selling together to florist and other wholesale buyers. We help you elevate your design work and manifest a better tomorrow with locally-grown stems.  Visit philadelphiafloralguild.com to learn more and follow us on Instagram @phillyfloralguild for regular inspiration.  Sign up for our newsletter to stay up to date on what's in season, tips and tricks for design, and the latest episodes.  Not near Philadelphia but would like to source local flowers for your business?  Check out localflowers.org and rootedfarmers.com to find a flower farm near you.   What Can Locally Grown Stems Do For Your Floral Business? Less Shrink: Without the stress of a long ride in the global supply chain, our stems are superior in quality with much less breakage and far better hydration. Less Labor: Our growers do all the work of a studio assistant, stripping stems and making fresh cuts on stems that go directly into water and never leave a water source. This means you do not have to process anything! Less Trash: There are no boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, box straps, plastic sleeves, and all the other usual trash that comes with a flower delivery from the traditional wholesaler. More Inspiration:  Designing with the seasons sparks creativity.  No two weeks are the same.  More Community:  Workign with local growers is a very personal connection.  You'll grow your community every time you buy local.

Are you an event company owner aiming to scale your business and acquire more clients? If you're currently struggling to reach your goals, you're not alone. In this podcast, we'll dive into practical strategies that can help you boost your client acquisition and drive sustainable growth. The Challenge: Moving from 20 to 50 Clients Recently, I had a conversation with Mr. Joseph, an event company owner who was looking to increase his client base from an average of 20 clients per year to a target of 50. He had tried various methods, including social media campaigns, direct sales within his church, and even hiring a prospecting company. However, he wasn't seeing the desired results. Diagnosing the Issues Let's break down the challenges Mr. Joseph faced and how we addressed them: Social Media Missteps: * Mr. Joseph had run social media ads for two years, but they weren't converting. * The Problem: His ads directed users to his general Instagram page, lacking a specific call to action. * The Solution: Directing ads to a dedicated landing page or specific post with clear conversion goals. A good landing page provides information, answers questions, and guides the user to the next step (e.g., email signup, WhatsApp message). Corporate Client Acquisition: * His attempts to secure corporate clients in Lagos using email proposals yielded minimal success. * The Problem: Relying on a single channel (email) and sending unsolicited proposals. * The Solution: Implementing an account-based marketing (ABM) strategy. This involves: * A multi-channel approach (email, phone, SMS, WhatsApp). * Researching key decision-makers (marketing, events, HR). * Building relationships through value-added interactions. * Example: researching money point, and discovering their event schedule, and then researching the specific people within the company that would be in charge of those events. Effort vs. Scaling vs. Strategy: * It is important to understand the different levels of business problems. * The first level is problems that can be solved by effort. Just doing more of the right things. * The second level is problems that are solved by scaling. Creating sustainable systems. * The third level is problems that are solved by strategic considerations. Practical Tips for Growth Here are some actionable steps you can take to enhance your event business: Optimize Your Social Media Strategy: * Create targeted landing pages for your ads. * Use clear calls to action. * Engage with your audience regularly. Implement Account-Based Marketing (ABM): * Identify key target companies. * Research decision-makers. * Use a multi-channel approach. * Focus on building relationships. Leverage Research Tools: * Use Google and LinkedIn to find contact information. * Research company events and needs. * Use tools like Google Gemini to find relevant information. Provide Value-Added Interactions: * Offer insights and solutions. * Show genuine interest in your clients' goals. * Ask questions about their event strategy. Taking the Next Step Mr. Joseph's journey highlights the importance of strategic thinking and adaptable marketing strategies. By addressing the root causes of his challenges and implementing targeted solutions, he's well on his way to achieving his growth goals. Remember, business growth is a process. By focusing on effort, scaling, and strategic considerations, you can overcome obstacles and build a thriving event company.

5 Fresh Tips: Help You Decide If Starting an Event Business is Right for You with Melissa Cossette

Five Fresh Tips

Deciding if you should start an event business can be overwhelming, but you're not alone! Check out these 5 Fresh Tips to help you decide if starting an event business is right for you with Melissa Cossette, Event Strategist, Coach for new business launchers in the events industry, and Founder of MAXevent. You can learn more about Melissa Cossette on her Fresh Starts Profile.5 Fresh Tips to help you decide to start an event planning business:Picture the life you want to wake up to one year from now and beyond. Pause and get really specific: What does success look like for you? How do you want to spend your days? Who are you working with, and what kind of events are you planning? The truth is, we all want financial success and flexibility, but without a clear vision that's tied to your deeper purpose, it can be hard to stay motivated when things get tough. Once you have this vision, it becomes your North Star, guiding your decisions and keeping you focused on the future you're building.Take an honest look at your time, energy, and life commitments. Are you easing into this new venture by taking on a few events while keeping your day job? Or are you diving head-first, ready to fully commit to your dreams? Building an event business isn't an overnight process, and it has to work within the realities of your life. Setting realistic expectations about how much time and energy you can devote now will help you build a sustainable business without burning out or sacrificing what's most important to you.Three: Evaluate your financial stability and resources. Starting any business requires both time and financial flexibility. In the early stages, cash flow can be unpredictable, so it's important to have a safety net in place. Ideally, this means at least six months' worth of savings or other financial support to cover both your personal and business expenses. This isn't just about surviving the slow times—it's about giving yourself the breathing room to invest in your business and set yourself up for long-term success.Four: Identify your specific niche in the events industry. It's tempting to want to plan all sorts of events for all sorts of clients. But trying to appeal to everyone will only dilute your impact. Instead, focus on what you love most about events, and hone in on what you're uniquely good at. Maybe it's crafting stylish micro-weddings, or maybe it's curating unforgettable milestone celebrations that reflect your client's story. Identifying a clear niche not only helps you stand out, but also makes it easier for the best clients to find you.Test your concept through conversations. Once you have a clear vision for your business offering, start sharing it. Everywhere. Talk to people in your circle — friends, family, and yes, even potential clients, even though you might not feel ready. Pay attention to their reactions. Do they get excited? Do they ask follow-up questions? Just as important, notice how you feel. Are you energized when you describe your vision, or do you feel unsure? These conversations are an incredible tool for refining your ideas and validating your concept, so embrace feedback—it's all part of the process.Make sure to check out Fresh Starts Registry: the first and only divorce registry and resource platform, and the fastest growing network of divorce professionals: https://www.freshstartsregistry.com/ Instagram:

Today, Eric shares invaluable insights on delegation and personal development, both crucial areas of concern for business owners within our industry aiming to grow their enterprises and refine their management skills.  Join us as Eric dives into these two essential aspects, offering practical advice on delegating tasks efficiently and investing in your personal growth for sustained business success. The Benefits of Delegation Eric recounts how handling every project on his own in his early business days led to burnout and stagnation and hindered the scalability of his business. After hiring help, he saw how all his daily tasks could get done successfully without his constant involvement. That shift allowed him more time to focus on his strengths and strategic activities.  Mindset Eric advises business owners to change their mindsets regarding delegation. He firmly believes that even if others only perform the necessary tasks at 80% of their capability, it will still meet all the customer requirements, allowing the owner more time to spend on higher-value tasks. Lifelong Learning Eric believes continuous learning is crucial for business owners to stay relevant in a dynamic business environment. He highlights the importance of continually learning by sharing a story from his academic days, where a professor explained that graduating was just the beginning of lifelong learning.  Investing in Personal Development  Eric has noticed how many individuals in the meetings and events industry neglect their personal development. He believes that may be partly due to the culture of receiving free services and opportunities within the industry. He points out that investing in their personal growth through ongoing learning and development will allow business owners to remain adaptable and innovative in an ever-evolving business market. Coaching, Mentoring, and Educational Programs Eric encourages business owners to proactively invest in personal growth through coaching, mentoring, and educational programs. By dedicating time and resources to their personal development, they can better adapt to future challenges and opportunities. Conclusion Eric encourages all business owners to embrace the principles of delegation and personal development, as they can significantly improve their business operations and personal lives. Jenn Foster and Melanie Johnson co-owners of Elite Online Publishing, interview Neil Mirchandani about what it takes to run a successful event decor company and the challenges that come with it. What You'll Learn in this Episode: How to create processes in your business. How to find unique ways to market your business. How to change your mindset to find success. Quotes: "The most important thing is to create processes above anything else, above sales, above trying to do marketing. It's probably the most important thing. And the reason is because if you have no processes in place, chaos is just inevitable." (06:07) "It's actually a challenge for us to market because over time we learn that we're really more in the wholesale business than in the retail business. We can't be out there and really loud about what we're doing based on the number of NDAs, and so over time, we as a team realized that we are really not in the retail business to the end client." (09:54) "But the reality is that I still don't feel like we've even reached close to our potential. There is just so much potential in our business and it takes a while to get outta the mindset that you can't start, extracting money from the business." (14:38) About Neil Mirchandani: Neil Mirchandani is at the helm of LLL Event Furnishings & Rentals, a multimillion-dollar event furnishing company located in Atlanta, GA - the entertainment industry hub of the South. From being a DJ to becoming the top provider for films and music videos, Mirchandani has even had some of his company's pieces featured on the popular Netflix dating show, 'Love is Blind,' while also being a part of the infamous Atlanta nightlife scene. One of the biggest challenges when you're getting started or maybe experiencing burn out as a business owner is knowing how to create a profitable business. In events, it's easy to assume all businesses are profitable. Mary and Logan break down what it means to be profitable, how we structure our businesses, and handling the unexpected (which at this point is expected in events). His hustle never sleeps it seems. A starter of things. I met Gary some 5-6 years back at one of the BBQ and Brews festivals. With the Georgia BBQ Association. He has the bbq lifestyle with his festivals and bbq vendors that work at his many events throughout the year. Some 40+ on the books for this year. Yes 40, he is aware there's only 52 Weeks in a year, so he says…. Find out what he thinks is wrong with bbq competitions, and some of his thoughts on how to fix them. Many great tidbits if you're considering bbq events as a course of employment. It's all fun and games til it isn't. Controlled chaos with this redneck PT Barnum is where he shines the brightest, if you've seen him in Action you know. When he's not throwing some of the biggest bbq festivals; Gary moonlights as a wrestling promoter and fight promotor as he owns Southern Honor Wrestling & Elev8 Fight League. Plus the T-Shirt business; oh; and he's still preaching every Sunday morning! To those of us that say we don't have time to accomplish our goals; Gary calls BS. While we had just a short chat, he opened my eyes to what could be in life if we got up just an hour earlier stayed up just an hour later and made just one more move in BBQ. Where you would be. I'm inspired, I know you will be too. Let me know what you thought of the episode, and follow along for future episodes coming WEEKLY.

When races grow from scratch, particularly as passion projects, there often comes a time where growth grinds to a halt. Participation seems to gradually plateau around a few hundred participants and any progress beyond that seems impossible. So, how do you break through this resistance point to grow a race from the hundreds to the thousands? What changes should you make to your team and event to take your growth to the next level? And how do you manage this next stage of growth while avoiding the pitfalls that come with growing too fast? That's what we'll be discussing today with my guest, Glass City Marathon race director, Clint McCormick. When it comes to systematically scaling up races, Clint has been there, done that and got the T-shirt, having grown the Glass City Marathon from a club race of a few hundred runners to a nationally recognised event of almost 10,000 runners, while increasing revenues for the race by over 20 times in the process. In our discussion today we are going to be touching on all the key elements for success in scaling up a race, including race branding and rebranding, building processes and systems for the long run, analyzing and reinventing your product offering to make it more appealing to sponsors, and using sponsorship to fuel your future growth. All this while putting safeguards in place to make sure you don't grow too fast and get yourself into trouble. In this episode:Moving a race from volunteer staff to professional/paid staffUnderstanding your brand and rebranding your raceNurturing local runners from 5K through to longer-distance events Examining your race distance offering and culling/adding events accordinglyFueling growth through sponsorships, and building a product that sponsors wantTips on scaling up your teamThe pitfalls of growing too fastManaging growth sustainably by capping participant numbersInvesting in race ambassadors and other grassroots marketing programsIn-house marketing vs employing a marketing agencyThanks to RunSignup for supporting quality content for race directors by sponsoring this episode. More on Brandie Weaver I eat, sleep, and breathe brand partnerships and events! I fell in love working with brands 15 years ago and since then I have sold over 4 million dollars in brand partnerships. I learned quickly that using different strategies, than the multi-million dollar event companies, was my key to success. I don't believe in a cookie-cutter strategy and brands love working with me because I put myself in their shoes and problem solve my way through building strategies that equal results. Event Marketing, Brand Partnerships, and B2B Collaborations have changed tremendously in the past five years. In this episode, we talk about becoming and showing up as an expert in the events industry. The traditional route towards becoming and being recognised as an expert is spending a lifetime in the industry or earning numerous relevant certifications along the way. But the traditional method takes a long time and is impractical for the new event stylist who wants to enter the events space as a top player. That's why we believe anyone can be an expert, as long as they're credible and bring their A-game every time they show up. What You'll Learn: - How to show up as an expert - How to build trust around your personal brand - Why giving mediocre and generic tips to prospects is not the way to go - Building authority in your niche - The journey towards building a credible brand  - How experts respectfully say no to some clients - The power of constantly showing up  - How to help your customer pick you Remember, for most of your clients, this is going to be the first and maybe the only time they'll ever need an events stylist. So, in their confusion, it would be best if you led them down the right path, even if it means highlighting that you may not be the right fit for a particular project.  Resources:  - Get our FREE guide on how to make money instantly in your events business https://bit.ly/balloonsmeanbusiness   - Connect with Katherine Lyndon https://www.instagram.com/dressyourdaydream/  - Connect with Michelle Lemmer https://www.instagram.com/theventsclique

"Often at a big company there's not that culture of trying new ideas. But if you imbrace innovation, fail fast during the effort and you learn from it, that could be the next great big success. So it's really, really important from a cultural perspective to think more entrepreneurial, to take more risks and then to celebrate those successes along with those failures.".... "COVIID forced us to be more entrepreneurial while a lot of times big corporations are not. We definitely had to think fast and we definitely had to take a lot more risk and not be afraid to fail." PGA of America and PGA Golf Exhibitions Provide Update on 2022 In-Person PGA Show Enhancements PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (August 19, 2021) PGA Golf Exhibitions, in partnership with the PGA of America, is progressing with previously announced PGA Show initiatives to refresh and grow the 69th annual flagship event, January 25-28 2022 in Orlando. Event and programming enhancements focus specifically on powering face-to-face business connections, spotlighting innovations and prioritizing product experiential education, sourcing and transactions. PGA Golf Exhibitions and the PGA of America will continue to closely monitor and implement health and safety standards, based on CDC guidelines, local public health guidance and host venue protocols, to support a safe and comfortable experience at the 2022 PGA Show.  “With feedback from industry stakeholders, we are reimagining various aspects of the PGA Show to build the businesses of exhibitors and attendees through programs which will enhance product experiences and learning, buying opportunities and face-to-face connections,” said PGA Golf Exhibitions Vice President Marc Simon. “Following the successful conclusion of the recent in-person buying and education summit held Aug. 9-10 in Las Vegas, we are optimistic about providing an elevated PGA Show experience while prioritizing the health and well-being of our guests. We look forward to an exciting 2022 PGA Show where the golf industry reunites, celebrates rising consumer engagement and works together for the continued growth of golf.” Current enhancements planned for the 2022 PGA Show include: • Creating a new PGA of America Hub on the Show Floor inside the main Central Lobby entrance of the Orange County Convention Center. Attendees will enter to a full-scale golf activation area featuring a PGA Frisco 2022 Opening preview; “Make Golf Your Thing” campaign programming; PGA Professional coaching demonstrations; golf industry programs; a PGA Professional lounge; PGA Career Services and activations for Association initiatives and business partners. • Reimagining the Equipment Test Center to feature technology enhancements on the indoor driving range, while relocating the practice putting green and the former short game test area nearby the Equipment Test Center to create one centralized golf product testing and experiential space. • Emphasizing clubfitting education during the event's traditional demo day, in partnership with PGA Magazine.  Clubfitting programming, education, vendors and range-side content will be added, and the event will move forward with the new name of PGA Show Demo and Fitting Day, the world's largest professional demo and fitting education event. • Re-organizing educational offerings, in partnership with the PGA of America and the Association of Golf Merchandisers, to prioritize PGA Professional and golf buyer time with exhibitors during Show floor hours. The 2022 educational programs will be scheduled with less overlap during Show Floor hours, and most Show Week education programs will be available virtually after the event. • Implementing enhanced sustainability measures with the host facility and service vendors, reducing the Show's carbon footprint, and highlighting industry and exhibitor sustainability initiatives. - Relocating the fashion buyer lounge, and the annual fashion show, to a more prominent Apparel Hall setting for easy access to peer meetings and networking. • Enhancing technology access on site and integrating digital platforms to positively impact product discovery, testing and purchasing, educational access, registration and planning/logistics. • Continuing the focus on health and well-being practices during all PGA Show Week events. Exhibitor participation is on track with the 2020 in-person PGA Show and media partners of the PGA Show and the PGA of America are set to return to the PGA Show Floor. Additionally, attendees can expect a return of popular PGA Show partners, pavilions, and programming, including the AGM Golf Retail Conference, NGCOA Golf Business Conference, PGA Member Business Center, New Product Zone, Inventors Spotlight exhibitor pavilion, live fashion show, golf travel pavilion, Adaptive Golf Center and the TPI Golf Fitness, Wellness & Instruction pavilion and stage. Additional details on enhancements will continue to be announced leading up to the 2022 PGA Show. Event details and early registration information is available at www.PGAShow.com. You've probably had the experience of meeting somebody from your past and saying, "I'm glad we're not together anymore." That's how I feel about producing live events. At least right now. There was a time when I was hot and heavy into producing and promoting live events – I've done HUNDREDS since starting my business in 1995. And even in the best of conditions, it's always a gamble. I had a college professor who had been in this business. He told me there was no greater rush than having a successful event, but no quicker way to lose money than having one fail. He wasn't kidding. In This Episode: A high-ticket event with a lot of money on the line A high-volume event with a lot of people coming A business where you got a big percentage of your money via public speaking Having 70% of your income vanish overnight – POOF! Starting one successful business doesn't necessarily make it easier to start another one. However, experienced entrepreneurs are more likely to be successful the second time around simply because they know how to push forward until they start to reach their goals, even if it takes longer than anticipated. In part two of our interview with Claudia Chan we discuss what gave her the idea of starting a women's empowerment company and why this business was more challenging to build from the ground up than the business she started in her mid twenties. We learn the importance of having a right hand man or woman from the onset and how Claudia was able to recruit this type of talent in the very early days of her company to make sure that she was executing on her goals. As the business grew SHE Summit started to attract people from over 100 organizations and to date it has had over 600 speakers while reaching tens of thousands of people through the conference and hundreds of thousands of people remotely. Claudia also talks about how this created an even bigger opportunity to build a leadership program for organizations that are interested in prioritizing diversity and inclusion and why it's so important to show others how leadership opportunities can be accessible to anyone that actively pursues them. Before Claudia Chan was even 30 years old, she was already running a 7-Figure women's entertainment business in New York City. How did this first time entrepreneur accomplish so much, so quickly? It was through that own-your-own-destiny mentality that Claudia's parents ingrained in her from a young age that she was able to have the confidence to think of herself as a born entrepreneur even as a teenager. Always keeping her eyes open for opportunities, Claudia spotted her first business idea while working for a dot com startup in the early 2000's, when companies were spending thousands on event and party sponsorships. In part one of our conversation with Claudia Chan we talked about how she got to revenue with that business before even quitting her job, why she decided to partner with someone else who had an existing party business in NYC and how that led to millions in revenue in a few short years. We also discuss how she used the lessons learned from that first business to start S.H.E Globl, which puts on one of the biggest women's empowerment summits in the world.
