Medical residency in a rural area is one of the key influencing factors for providers to stay and continue practicing in a rural area. This week on Rural Health Leadership Radio we are talking to Yoana Cruz, Clerkship and Sub-Internship Coordinator in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. We talk with Yoana about the growing need for more providers in rural healthcare, and how she is bringing awareness to the need with up-and-coming medical students and working to connect those students with rural residencies. “Although I may not be the person that gives direct care for patients, I hope to encourage medical professionals at an early stage of their career to provide the best quality care for patients.” – Yoana Cruz Born and raised in southwest Kansas, Yoana Cruz grew up in a welcoming community, full of hard-working immigrant families from more than thirty countries. Despite its rich heritage and tolerant culture, this agrarian city has many health disparities due to its growing number of immigrants and political refugees. The regional healthcare delivery system is slow to react to the complex medical and social needs of these diverse groups. Yoana's own experiences with barriers to utilizing the healthcare delivery system as a child of immigrants have informed her perspective on health equity and motivated her to pursue mission-driven work in healthcare administration. Yoana has 6+ years of project planning experience in the healthcare setting while previously working at Kearny County Hospital, Cerner Corporation, and now at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She is a 1st generation academic student where she received her BBA from Fort Hays State University and recently graduated in May 2024 in her Master of Health Services Administration from the University of Kansas Medical Center. In her spare time, she holds professional development workshops for undergraduate students pursuing business or healthcare-related careers.

Tony Robbins once famously said that if we don't grow, we die. And the secret to growth is outside that circle we call our comfort zone. That seems to be the theme for our guest's personal and professional journey, which took her from Transylvania to holding a CFO role in one of the most recognizable brands in the world. Jack McCullough talks with Yoana Land, CFO Transformation at L'Oreal North America. The conversation explores the evolving role of finance professionals in a digital age, emphasizing that AI should be seen as a partner rather than a replacement. Yoana's personal background, including her roots in Transylvania and her language skills, adds a unique and engaging dimension to the conversation, making it fascinating and insightful to follow.

An Interview with Yoana & Ilona by Sheena Byrom
COLLISIONS follows the story of a twelve-year-old girl, Itan (Izabella Alvarez), a straight-A-student in San Francisco, who comes home from school to find their family’s furniture up-ended and no trace of her mother, Yoana (Ana de la Reguera), who was detained by Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). Child Protective Services dumps Itan and her six-year-old brother Neto (Jason Garcia) with their estranged uncle Evencio (Jesse Garcia), a big rig truck driver. Itan can't stand him. He's arrogant, unreliable, and possibly a criminal. After a desperate search, Itan locates Yoana in an immigration detention center in Arizona and convinces Evencio to take them there. They are propelled onto the road in Evencio’s truck, through the maddening labyrinth of immigration detention. Itan fights to free her mother before she is deported. But her mother keeps slipping from her grasp, as she is transferred from prison to prison. Their journey takes them through the deserts of the southern border, to sprawling truck stops, border patrol offices and secret immigration prisons. Director / Producer / Writer / Editor Richard Levien joins us for a conversation on the inspiration for COLLISIONS, his desire to humanize the tragic stories behind the headlines and the corrosive impact that cruel, politically motivated policies can have on the lives of hardworking peoples lives. Yoana came to the US with her husband in 2015 all the way from Romania, after winning the Green card lottery. She earned a BFA in Theater and Film from a very prestigious art school in Europe. She won the Green card Lottery, and it was not intentional! It happened after her husband Mihai showed his uncle how to apply for the Lottery using all of Yoana's information to practice on, as his uncle was not tech savvy. The lottery was submitted and validated and shortly after they had the lottery winning docs on their kitchen table right as they were returning from their Honeymoon one beautiful summer day in 2004. They immediately decided to take the crazy ride towards something that they never experienced before, with no fears or looking back, even though they had a brand new business in place and their married life was just starting. Also, Yoana was an already recognized actress, but the American dream won and they started preparing for the next move. In 2005, they landed straight to LA as her husband got a job offer from one of his dad's Romanian friends. LA was right on her alley as an actress, and she started working multiple gigs right away. She was Madonna's personal stand-in, worked with De Niro, Pacino, Christina Aquilera, Kumi Koda and many others. Being in LA was super cool at the time and her husband was doing really well in his job, and in 2007, she woke up one morning in their small 1 bedroom apt and told her hubby that her spirit wanted a baby. Anais was born on 2008- January 24th and pregnancy was complicated. But she is 11 years old today, healthy and amazing! Long story short, they ended up opening their own company in 2008 as brokers in transportation, their own firm that would become very successful, and Yoana stopped working as an actress as now she was a mom and the baby girl was her joy. All things were going well with the company and Anais growing beautifully but in 2010 and 2011 Yoana had 2 miscarriages- one at 3 months and other at 5 months. They were devastated and decided they wanted to go away for one year, thus renting their newly purchased home, packing their car and leaving to unknown grounds in their car, with some clothes and nothing else. It was the only way she was going to be able to go through the emotional challenges that they were facing. After 2 months, they ended up settling in the Raleigh area. Their brokerage company started losing money as the recession was just hitting their business as well and her husband decided to sell it. Being left with barely anything in their savings after purchasing a home in NC as well, she started studying real estate. Why real estate? Because as they were house hunting, she was so passionate that her agent gave her Gary Keller's "The Millionaire real estate agent" book and in 2012 Dec- I started working as a realtor and never moved back to LA. Yoana ended up becoming one of the Top brokers in the Raleigh area and years later in 2014 had her baby boy- Phoenix. Now she is building her business and growing as we speak.
