Madison Keys has been a major champion for over a week now! This episode isn't really about that, but it bears repeating. Checking in on tennis in February, we've got Felix winning yet another indoor title, Mertens and Alexandrova making up for somewhat disappointing Australian Opens, and a whole heap of man drama at Davis Cup, featuring one of the only head-on collisions you'll see in tennis and the current state of ATP umpiring. This episode covers lots of odds and ends including Petra's imminent return(!), more from the AO men's final protestor, Ymer's unretirement, and the US Open's expansion.  0:35 WTA titlists Mertens and Alexandrova; Felix wins his second title of the year 6:55 Davis Cup: Garin gets literally run over by Bergs 17:40 Certainly not while wearing that moustache 20:00 Mikael Ymer did the opposite of “break up with your [tennis], I'm bored”  20:55 Petra Kvitova is coming back, maple syrup magnate Vasek Pospisil is leaving 28:05 One more thing about Madi 34:20 Craig Tiley's comments on the AusOpen protestor are … lacking  39:35 The US Open's manspread

TENNIS WEEKLY CROWDFUND: https://www.gofundme.com/f/tennis-weekly Tennis Weekly 2025 Crowdfund is now open! Your support keeps us going no matter how large or small is hugely appreciated, from listening to donating we couldn't be more thankful to our audience! Now that the Australian Open is over it's back to the tour and this week the main focus is the dramatic Davis Cup Qualifiers 1st Round which saw upset and drama pan out across the globe. The main focus was one particular incident between Belgium and Chile that quite literally left Christian Garin floored when Zizou Bergs charged at him and collided at a change of ends. On the ATP tour it was Felix Auger-Aliassime who came out on top after choosing to play the Open Occitanie instead of Davis Cup just for Canada. He won his 7th title in Montpelier and has now almost reversed his 0-8 record in finals and has gone 7-2 since 2022. Elsewhere on the WTA tour there was a maiden 500 victory for Ekaterina Alexandrova who defeated former Australian Open semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska in a hard fought final. Alexandrova even bageled Karolina Muchova on her way to the title. Joel and Chris also answer a mailbag involving Australian Open winner Madison Keys being removed from the entry list of the Austin Open due to a technicality and whether the WTA should be doing more to build the profile of 250s rather than just removing their star players that would mean bums on seats and money in the bank for the smaller tournaments.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. She does work in philosophy of economics, philosophy of social science, measurement in social and medical sciences, social organization of science, philosophy of mental health/psychotherapy/wellbeing, evidence-based policy and role of science in governance; and more. She is the editor of Limits of the Numerical: The Abuses and Uses of Quantification.   In this episode, we focus on Limits of the Numerical. We discuss what quantification is; whether quantitative data are precise, value-free, and objective; whether qualitative data are of inferior quality; and C. P. Snow's two cultures, and their social and political consequences. We talk about the limits and strengths of quantification, society's relationship to numerical data, and whether it is ethical to manipulate the public with numbers if they have good social effects. We discuss thick concepts, and why they present a challenge to science; the democratization of measurement; and pluralism in science. Today's episode features Professor Anna Alexandrova from the University of Cambridge discussing a field she has pioneered - the Philosophy of Well-Being Science. As Anna points out, well-being and happiness are now established phenomena for scientific research, particularly in the disciplines of psychology and economics. But does current scientific research produce knowledge that is properly about well-being? What kind of well-being? Should the goal be a single concept and single theory of well-being?Anna persuasively argues that a ‘one-concept-or-one-theory-fits-all' attitude is wrong-headed. Instead, Anna suggests researchers should invest in tailoring the concept of ‘well-being' for specific people in specific contexts. Furthermore, we must take into consideration the components of well-being, or better put – of human flourishing - that are meaningful to the people within those groups.Relevant links for Anna:Profile - Anna Alexandrova | HPS | University of CambridgeBook - A Philosophy for the Science of Well-Being | Oxford Academic (oup.com)Current work - The Many Dimensions of Wellbeing - Bennett Institute for Public PolicyMedia - Interviews and popular writings The transcript for this episode can be found at: https://www.hpsunimelb.org/post/s3-ep3-anna-alexandrova-transcriptThanks for listening to The HPS Podcast with your current hosts, Samara Greenwood and Carmelina Contarino. You can find more about us on our blog, website, bluesky, twitter, instagram and facebook feeds. Hosted on Acast. Samtalet spelades in inför publik under Stockholms bokhelg 2023, på Volante förlag i Gamla stan. Gäster är Liza Alexandrova-Zorina, Henrik Sjögren, reporter på Fokus och Johan Hakelius politisk chefredaktör på Fokus. Programledare är Nina Solomin, kulturredaktör på Fokus. W., David, C. N. Abstract: The Hydra nervous system is the paradigm of a simple nerve net. Nerve cells in Hydra, as in many cnidarian polyps, are organized in a nerve net extending throughout the body column. This nerve net is required for control of spontaneous behavior: elimination of nerve cells leads to polyps that do not move and are incapable of capturing and ingesting prey (Campbell, 1976). We have re-examined the structure of the Hydra nerve net by immunostaining fixed polyps with a novel pan-neuronal antibody that stains all nerve cells. Confocal imaging shows that there are two distinct nerve nets, one in the ectoderm and one in the endoderm, with the unexpected absence of nerve cells in the endoderm of the tentacles. The nerve nets in the ectoderm and endoderm do not contact each other. High-resolution images show that the nerve nets consist of bundles of parallel overlapping neurites. Transmission and serial block face scanning electron microscopy show that nerve bundles in the ectoderm are closely associated with ectodermal muscle processes. Nerve bundles in the endoderm are separate from muscle processes. The occurrence of bundles of neurites supports a model for continuous growth and differentiation of the nerve net by lateral addition of new nerve cells to the existing net. This model was confirmed by tracking newly differentiated nerve cells. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC

Why psychologists and economists are averse to qualitative measures? When is this a problem? Why are some scholars so pessimistic about the science of happiness? Ajla Tomljanovic is dead to me, and Belinda Bencic is on fraud watch. Harriet Dart just isn't that girl, and British tennis fans definitely need one (this is a low blow aimed towards Emma). There were some good performances today: Kudermetova, Alexandrova, Martincova, Riske. Sabalenka clutched a 3S tiebreak against the Ostrich, in a match that shouldn't have been that complicated. Alexandrova looks like she is nearing 'final form', and it could be scary, not for her though. WTA Qualis tomorrow in Birmingham and Berlin, those are our two grass tournaments for next week. Bencic has a chance to showcase what she's got against Kudermetova, a non-participant at Wimbledon. Alexandrova, Sabalenka, also on that list, so could they ball out this grass season, or do they not care?

In this episode, we talk with Alexandra Alexandrova, founding member of the Student Center for Diversity, Advocacy and Inclusion (SCDAI) on inclusion and diversity at Hanze UAS. Alexandra studies International Communication (IC) at Hanze UAS and is currently writing a thesis on institutional racism at higher education institutions. She focuses specifically on Hanze UAS. She started SCDAI with a couple of classmates after some incidents in classes. Their initial goal was to create awareness among students and staff. 'But we soon realized it wasn't just about someone saying something racist, the problem was bigger.' The students of SCDAI are all IC students, but the organization is trying to expand. 'We are trying to reach all students in higher education.' Alexandra sees a connection between Hanze's obesssion with sustainability and the topic of diversity. 'It's great that the Hanze is working on making the future more green. But there is a big difference in how sustainability is promoted, compared to the importance put on diversity.' ABOUT THE GUEST: Voted one of UT's Top Ten Professors (which is a big deal), Dr. Marina Alexandrova was born and raised in Saratov, Russia. She received her MA equivalent in English from Saratov State University, and her PhD in Comparative Literature (Russian and Spanish American Literatures) from the University of Texas at Austin. Her dissertation analyzes the formation of the literary public spheres in Russia and Argentina, focusing on the avant-garde literary groups and their complex interactions with the state. Dr. Alexandrova's current research interests include the art and literature of Russian modernism and avant-garde, the history of Russian food production and consumption, and Russian radical and revolutionary movements. During Spring 2018, Dr. Alexandrova taught her new course "Advanced Russian through Drama," which culminated in student production of Vladimir Mayakovsky's controversial comedy "Bedbug" (1928).
