Leeanne West became the President of the International Children Advisory Network in 2018. This non-profit has 36 chapters in the United States, Canada, and Africa and its focus is to help empower children, adolescents, and young adults to make their own decisions concerning their individual health care battles. These chapters all have a Youth Council, a Young Professionals Group, a Siblings Group, and a Parents Group.  The chapters are associated with hospitals near where they are located, and are very supportive of the goal in helping these patients gain the knowledge and experience that they will need as they try and control as many of the decisions that have to be made in their individual health situations. Many of these situations involve Pediatric Cancer.

My lab partner today is the Association of Water Technologies' current President, Matt Jensen. A self-proclaimed lover of water, Matt discovered his fascination with the use and movement of water at a young age. Growing up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, he would spend his summers sailing and fishing. Matt graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point with a degree in Analytical Chemistry and a minor in American History. He interned at a Water Treatment company during his final summer in college, and that is where Matt's interest in Water Treatment began.  Matt started his career at an International Chemical Distributor selling commodity chemicals to the food, pharmaceutical, and specialty chemical industries. He then worked for a large US-based national Water Treatment company, selling primarily in the food and healthcare markets, before joining Watertech of America, Inc. as a Territory Manager, then Director of Applied Technologies. In 2021, after 12 years of working at the Watertech of America, Matt joined Global Water Technology, Inc. as the Vice President. Matt first got involved with the Association of Water Technologies (AWT) in 2009 in the Young Professionals Group and the Charity Task Force. That same year, he earned his Certified Water Technologist (CWT) designation. Outside of Water Treatment, Matt enjoys fishing and coaches his son's and daughter's hockey teams. Salvador continued his education at Harvard University where he obtained a B.A. in History and French. He now works at Google as a Multicultural Media and Marketing Manager, specializing in Latinx and Black engagement. As the recently elected President of the Young Professionals Group at the Alliance Française, Salvador highlights the impact that French culture and the Alliance Française have had on his career, all the while sharing his views on being a first generation Latino in a multidimensional world.

We recently had the opportunity to talk with Stephanie Caldwell, a seasoned Chamber of Commerce executive about Ventura and her vision for Main Street. Stephanie understands the small town nature of Ventura and the high percentage of mom and pop businesses. She's also got a lot to say about Growth vs. No Growth conversations and how they affect Ventura. Stephanie came to Ventura from The San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce three years ago, where she was the Chief Operating Officer. Stephanie says there are five main areas of focus: Economic Development, Networking and Visibility, Community Building (especially for non-profits), Advocacy and Political Action, especially as it relates to her board. We mention the board, as one of our sponsors, Greg Van Ness; also a guest on the podcast is Vice-Chair of Governmental Affairs at the Chamber. Ventura has a vibrant startup scene as well, and she quoted another 805conversations guest and Board Chair of the Chamber, John Silva, who said, "Joining the Chamber is one of the best ways to grow your business." Our conversation also touched on the Thomas Fire and the impact it had on an already tight housing marketing. With only 2% availability (much like most of the communities in the 805) it's a challenge when, as a business, you're trying to attract talent from outside the region. Her mantra is in three areas: attract, retain and grow. She's also not blind to the changing economy, and the impact technology has on brick and mortar businesses, especially the sharing economy. She's also recognized a generational shift in membership and is excited about the Young Professionals Group and their positive impact on the organization. Stephanie says the most significant ongoing challenge is communications and how to bridge the growth vs. no growth politics.

You are a heat transfer efficiency manager. Everything you do is a sub product from making sure the equipment you are treating is effective discharging that heat as efficiently as it possible can. If you do your job correctly, you are making sure that it is the most cost effective way of transferring that heat on the equipment that you’re treating. If you are not doing your job correctly that heat has to transfer through some sort of insulator meaning that we have to flow more water through the system, meaning that we might have to use more energy in that system and it’s not being effective. Your job above all else is heat transfer efficiency management. If we’re heating something we’re putting heat in and we’re taking it to a place where we need it. still making sure we’re managing all the transfer of that heat. where we’re putting it in where we need it. When we’re cooling, we’re removing heat. We’re taking the heat out of a place where we don’t want it, we’re flowing it through our equipment and we’re discharging it to a place where we don’t care about it, normally that’s the atmosphere.
