The Trolley Problem | Moral Dilemma

Would you like to see Brendan fumble with difficult scenarios? Well that is exactly what we have here for you. In this new side series, Brendan gets thrown in the hot seat while Nic asks him for his opinions on moral dilemmas. Today's Moral Dilemma: THE TROLLEY PROBLEM There is a runaway trolley barreling down the railway tracks. Ahead, on the tracks, there are five people. The trolley is headed straight for them. You are standing some distance off in the train yard, next to a lever. If you pull this lever, the trolley will switch to a different set of tracks. Unfortunately, you notice that there is one person on the side track. You have two options: (1) Do nothing, and the trolley kills the five people on the main track. (2) Pull the lever, diverting the trolley onto the side track where it will kill one person. Which would you choose? If you enjoy this segment, drop a like and let us know in the comments! We had a great time recording this, and would love to do more. Thanks for tuning in! We appreciate the support.

Our guest today is Ashanti Branch, M.Ed. He is currently the founder and executive director of the Ever Forward Club. Mr. Branch, born and raised by a single mother on welfare in Oakland, California, took the road less traveled to get out of the ghetto and attended one of California's premier engineering colleges, California Polytechnic - San Luis Obispo. Ashanti studied Civil Engineering and worked as a construction project manager in his first career. After tutoring struggling students and realizing his true passion was teaching, Mr. Branch changed careers. He had suddenly found the “fire” that was missing in his life and he hoped to ignite a similar enthusiasm in his young students. In 2004 as a first year teacher, Ashanti started The Ever Forward Club to provide a support group for African American and Latino males, who were not achieving to the level of their potential. Since then, The Ever Forward Club has grown to serve both young men and women and become a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The Ever Forward Club has helped 100% of its members graduate high school and 93% of them have gone on to attend college. With over 19 years mentoring youth and 10 of those years as a math teacher educating inner city youth, Ashanti was awarded with a Fulbright Exchange Fellowship to India, a Rotary Club Cultural Ambassadorial Fellowship to Mexico and a 2010 Teacher of the Year Award from the Alameda-Contra Costa County Math Educators. Mr. Branch is on a mission to change the way that students interact with their education and the way schools interact with students. He speaks about masculinity regularly at schools and conferences nationally and internationally. Taken From His Website: "If there's anything I am most proud of about Better Boys, Better Men it's this: Through the many studies and boys' and men's stories (as well as some of my own), the book ultimately constructs, from the ashes, a new, more dynamic masculine identity that allows for deeper emotional lives beyond anger. This gives boys and men permission to finally, finally embrace their deeper humanity. This is a masculine identity that's far more healthy, resilient and sustainable for boys, for men—and for people of all genders." Dr. Joshua Ackerman, PhD is a an associate professor of psychology and marketing at the University of Michigan. He was also an associate professor of marketing at MIT Sloan School of Management. RESEARCH INTERESTS: My research explores the role that adaptive psychological mechanisms play in behavioral and decision-making contexts. Much of what we think about (or don't think about), the decisions we make (or not), and the (dis)satisfaction we have with those decisions is driven by a fundamental set of evolved predispositions interacting with subtle features of our current environments. In approaching psychology from this perspective, my research has concentrated primarily on interpersonal cognition — how and why people think, prefer, choose, and act with or because of each other. Currently, my focus involves how people respond to and cope with ecological threats, including those related to mortality, infectious disease, resources, and social rejection, as well as ecological opportunities, including ones related to romantic relationships and friendships. I also occasionally work on topics less connected with an evolutionary perspective in the domains of marketing, sensation, and social cognition.
