In a bold move, he brought The Executive Committee (TEC), now known as Vistage, and its Executive Leadership Program to Canada. As a TEC/Vistage Chair, Doug introduced coaching, peer advisory groups, and some of the continent's most brilliant speakers to young Presidents of mid-market entrepreneurial companies. His dedication and expertise helped these leaders take their companies to new heights, especially in the thriving western North American economy. In 2014, life threw a significant challenge Doug's way when he was diagnosed with cancer. During his courageous battle and long road to recovery, he discovered a newfound passion for writing. With his deep well of knowledge in working life and what comes after, he sought to share his experiences and insights, touching the lives of countless individuals. Today, Doug's creativity knows no bounds as he continues to write and paint, expressing his vibrant spirit. His zest for life takes him across the western Canadian prairie and coast, while he also explores the wonders of central Mexico. Working with a team that makes you feel heard, seen, and valued is one of the best feelings in the world. On the other hand, having your ideas squashed and feeling afraid to make mistakes can make the workday feel like it never ends. On this episode of the Int-HER-rupt Podcast, our host Linda Yates has a conversation with Paige Garrido, the Assistant Director of Executive Education at FAU's College of Business and leader of the FAU Women in Executive Leadership Program. Garrido works with mid- to senior-level professionals, helping them to enter the C-suite. Even successful people experience feeling silenced, or like they don't belong. Listen in to hear about why an inclusive workplace generates more success, and get some tips on improving your company culture. Why Should Workplaces Be Inclusive? Garrido refers to Dr. Rob Bogosian's idea of “The Culture of Voice”: when employees feel like they belong and can speak up. Bogosian Open, engaged employees feel safe to bring up concerns, and have more creative ideas Teamwork boosts engagement and innovation Employees don't want to work hard for people who aren't inclusive, even though they may seem to due to fear of reprimand Tips for Creating an Inclusive Workplace Start with you. Leaders who want to create an inclusive workplace need to start by doing some self-reflection and evaluating their strengths and challenges. Listening and connecting with others are huge responsibilities and they start with vulnerability. The stories we tell ourselves dictate our success. If you don't see yourself in a good light, you can exclude yourself because you're cutting yourself down. Be aware of any negative self-talk. If there are things you need, ask. Come up with a strategic plan or a list of things you need to help yourself be more successful, and try to ask for what you need. “We always look at inclusion from the company's perspective – “How do we make people feel more included?' But I would say, it's the message that we're telling ourselves about our roles in our organizations.” - Paige Garrido Check out the Int-HER-rupt Website at www.intherrupt.com! Brenda and Kathryn offer their thoughts on navigating self-doubt in the world of Business Leadership. They share common reasons women feel “held back” from maximizing their potential. They also talk about how to prioritize goals, build a powerful support network, and weed out distractions which lead you away from achieving what you truly desire in your career. Driven by the belief that more Female Leaders equals a better world, Brenda and Kathryn explain, that many women are held back from unlocking their potential because of their own limiting beliefs. By simply changing the story you tell yourself, you completely transform the way you show up at work and in all your relationships, personal and professional. Brenda and Kathryn also speak on the value of your reputation or personal brand, no matter your role in an organization. As a Leader, how you are seen by your teammates and clients is fundamental to your success. They encourage women to simply ask around to get feedback on their strengths and gaps as others see them, and to be ready and willing to adjust how they work and interact with others, if unsatisfied with the answers they hear. Another key to maximizing your reputation is by combining your personal power, or who you are as a person, with your position power as a professional. Brenda and Kathryn ultimately remind us, that Leadership is a skill, and that deliberate goal-setting and consistent, disciplined practice are essential to growing that skill. This podcast is sponsored by InnerProfessional online training programs. With courses geared specifically for Legendary Leaders, InnerProfessional provides an extraordinary catalog of leadership and professional development programs unlike any online training you've experienced before. Key Takeaways: Success in any endeavour starts with “staking yourself out”: getting clear on what you want to accomplish and the type of person you want to become in the process. It's a mistake to go at it alone. Create a support system for yourself as early as possible so you can go further in your career than you ever could by yourself. Leadership is a skill, which means yours can be developed with the right goal and strategy. Great careers are built on strengths. When you know what you're good at, you possess the keys to your professional success. Episode Timeline: [05:02] Introduction to Brenda Wensil & Kathryn Heath. Mental Health education in children is critical to making long term change in society and today's guest is dedicating herself to this cause.Margo Ward is the founder and CEO of KidsXpress Life. Her vision and inspiration for this world-first program was bestowed on her by the children she worked with as Head of Play Therapy at the Sydney Children's Hospital. While working predominantly with chronically ill children within Oncology and ICU, Margo saw the opportunity to broaden the scope of creative approaches to therapy with children, and she began to develop a new model for looking at trauma and grief counselling. In 2005, Margo shared her vision for a unique expressive therapy program with potential investors from the private sector. Margo realised that by uniquely combining music, art, drama and play therapies in a group therapy context, the program would have incredible potential to transform young lives. Investors from across the private & corporate sectors believed in the potential of the program, and so KidsXpress was born. In a short time, Margo established a highly credentialed board (including renowned economist Dr John Hewson as Chair), a talented and passionate team of therapists and sponsors, referral pathways and a robust set of program effectiveness metrics to get the attention of government and other youth support services. In 2011 Margo was awarded a scholarship to attend the Executive Leadership Program at Stanford University, an experience that has not only underpinned the next stages of expansion of her social impact interests but also opened up opportunities to address societal issues on a broader scale.Margo's vision continues to shine through the work of KidsXpress; transforming the lives of hundreds of children, their families and communities through leading expressive therapies. You learn more about Kids Xpress: kidsxpress.org.au...Thanks for listening! Introduction https://geni.us/new-one-free-audiobook (The New One Minute Manager) builds on the foundation laid by the management classic, The One Minute Manager. The One Minute Manager was first published in 1981. The new book develops the ideas from the first book, recognizing the need for change due to how technology has advanced over the years. The world is a different place from how it was back then. You will learn three practical secrets for leading others by taking modern work styles into account. StoryShot #1: The First Secret is One Minute Goals “He feels that a goal and its performance standard—what needs to be done and by what due date—should take no more than a paragraph or two to express, so it can be read and reviewed in about a minute.” — Ken Blanchard Learning how to set one-minute goals is the beginning of one-minute management. Your one-minute goals should only include your top priorities. The easiest way to identify this is to use the 80/20 rule. So, you should find the activities that take 20% of your time but provide you with 80% of the total results. These tasks should then be your focus for one-minute goals. One-minute goals are always important, but there are five ways you can improve the outcome of these goals: Plan the goals together. When you do this, try to describe them briefly and clearly. You should also clearly define the outcomes you want by stating what you think good performance is. Each person should write their goals with due dates on a single page. This will act as a prompt and encourage them to work toward deadlines. Ask your colleagues to review their most important goals every single day. This will only take them a few minutes per day but will have a significant impact. After revision, encourage your colleagues to consider their current approaches. They need to decide whether they match their goals. If your colleagues cannot notice their shortcomings, you must help them rethink what they are doing to realize their goals. StoryShot #2: The Second Secret is One Minute Praising “People who feel good about themselves produce good results.” — Ken Blanchard People perform better when they receive...

Episode 12: In today's episode, we discuss the partnership between Kroger and the Rubel School of Business, which launched the Kroger Emerging Leaders Program. Ann Reed, Kroger Regional President, Jacqui Fritz, Kroger Assistant HR Leader and Dr. Natasha Munshi, Dean of the Rubel School of Business discuss how the program was conceptualized, developed and implemented to help up and coming Kroger leaders. In Episode 1, Dr. Munshi described her vision for executive education certificate programs. The opportunity to work with Kroger to custom-develop an Emerging Leaders Program is a result of her passion and execution. This is a significant component of Rubel's strategic plan. Professional Development Challenges during the COVID Pandemic Jacqui discusses a number of challenges Kroger encountered. As Kroger has grown in scale, the training and develop requirements have evolved. Larger volume stores bring their own challenges based on diverse personalities and larger numbers of employees. The technology challenges (i.e. e-commerce) increase as this aspect of sales continues to grow. There's also the staffing challenges as people retire and move-on. HR looks to identify and cultivate new leaders to help cope with the myriad of both challenges and opportunities. The Future of Work in the Grocery Retail Business Ann comments specifically on the pace of change Kroger is experiencing. Food is a substantial part of Kroger's portfolio. Investing in innovative ways to provide those items, and others, in a competitive environment is tantamount to Kroger's success. How Kroger thinks about a traditional brick and mortar location is vital to continuing a presence as a local community center. What Are the Skill Sets and Competencies Kroger Expects as a Result of this Partnership? There was a lot of discussion about aspirant skill sets and gaps Kroger sees among the new leaders its cultivating. One aspect is equipping them so they have the confidence needed to make solid business decisions on a day-to-day basis. Adapting to the multiple employee groups, in addition to a diverse customer-base, is a specific competency Kroger values and is expecting to provide via its partnership with Rubel. A confident leader will be ready to execute more effective and more efficiently. In examining the existing gaps, they understood the advantage of additional training in financial concepts and measurements. The program will help Kroger leaders to execute at the departmental levels within the stores. From a leadership standpoint, specific training effective accountability discussions. Developing to skills and perspectives to lead a large group of employees is a highly-desired aspect of professional develop. Executing on excellence is at the forefront. Kroger and Rubel have designed the Executive Leadership Program to address these and other core (and advanced) managerial competencies. Ann Reed Discusses Her Inspiration for this Program Ann originally met Natasha via Susan Donovan, Bellarmine's President. Both Ann and Natasha recognized the value of the “Zero Hunger. Zero Waste” initiative. Kroger is on a mission to end hunger in the communities it serves. This was the foundation for a working relationship and exploration of additional opportunities. Ann was aware of some of the partnerships Dr. Munshi had developed in her previous roles, before coming to Bellarmine. Ann wanted to develop a similar development program for Kroger leaders, outside of the internal training already provided by Kroger. There's value in the networking opportunities and exposure to other leaders in the community. Initially, Ann and Jacqui were thinking about local-area instructors, but the Rubel School of Business program offered even more. Technology has enabled the program to involve instructors from across the country to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program. In describing her personal path, a career in the grocery business was not what Ann anticipated. She started in Kroger's Indianapolis division. She was new to this industry. What inspires her and interests her today are some of the same things she recognized 28 years ago. The pace of change is something Ann loves. It's a very kinetic environment with the opportunity in interact with many people and personalities. So many of her special childhood memories were around the table, and Kroger is all about food. In her opinion, there's no better place to work. Ann still values those aspects which initially inspired her: People, Serving the Community and Great Food. Kroger operates in Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois and most of the counties in Kentucky. There are 116 stores employing 19,000 associates and is proud of its 90+ years. Kroger is one of the largest employers in Kentucky. They are the largest market-share grocer in the region. Kroger focuses on its customers. They want to be friendly; the items to be fresh and in-stock every single day. HRs Targeted Outcomes for the Kroger Emerging Leaders Program Once a high-potential leader has been identified, he/she may be offered the opportunity to participate in this innovative program. Kroger wants to instill a sense of accomplishment for those who complete this program. The skills and competencies they learn can be applied and demonstrated at the local store level. This creates a natural mentoring opportunity. The program will drive improved financial results and the team's ability to deliver an exceptional customer experience. The overarching concept is that these leaders will be moving up and through the organization. Success as a result of this program will foster employee retention as the leaders pass on those skills to younger leaders and associates. The Decision to Partner with the Rubel School of Business Ann commented on how proud she is of what Bellarmine stands for in the community. The innovative approach to a developing a customized experience, using actual Kroger financial information, created in conjunction with Kroger is something that stood out for her. The Kroger leaders will learn using their own data and experiences. Bellarmine moved extremely quickly to propose a workable concept that both parties refined and finalized together. The speed of development and implementation impressed Ann. Kroger has really embraced this experience and is confident in how it will help its leaders to rise to the next level. Natasha comments that the current iteration of the program is done using technology, such as Zoom video. This relates back to how Rubel is incorporating other thought leaders and experts to augment its own faculty in delivering a cutting-edge experience. Key Take-Aways for other Senior Executives As we conclude the discussion, we discuss how this type of partnership could help other organizations. Long-term success is always about your people. The type of programs Rubel can develop can help to demonstrate a company's commitment to its people and their individual success. The Rubel team fosters strong communication as the program moves from conceptualization to implementation. This engenders trust and enables a more efficient rollout. It's a partnership. The value of the company's decision to equip its leaders can also help with retention, another key metric for any organization. As a community, we need to focus on being learners for life. This program provides an innovative opportunity. While a company may have an internal training and development team, incorporating an external partnership can be exciting. There are outside perspectives and deliverables that could augment the internal team's efforts. Bellarmine's strategic plan involves a focus on enabling transformative business education. In addition to this program, Rubel is also partnering with Kroger in the Rubel School of Business' Women of Color Entrepreneurial Leadership Certificate. This is another demonstration of Kroger's commitment to the local community. They sponsored 3 women entrepreneurs so each could participate in the program. We recorded an episode detailing the aspects of the Women of Color Entrepreneurial Leadership Certificate. Bellarmine's business school wants to partner with other organizations to enhance our community. We are ready to pursue a similar opportunity with your organization. As children across the nation are preparing to return to school there are many important questions on the topic of school safety beyond the health concerns that parents need to be asking their children, their children's teachers and administrators. There are many questions about mental health and the toll the pandemic has had on children. It is critical that we all prepare now and know the risks that our schools face, not so we will live in a constant state of fear, but that we might be informed to have a greater level of confidence that the appropriate mitigation strategies are implemented to save the most lives should an act of evil come to our communities. Today Patrina will be speaking with Dr. Rodney Glasgow, an innovative educational leader, published author, renowned keynote speaker, diversity practitioner, and current Head of School at Sandy Spring Friends School. Randy is a graduate of Harvard University, with a joint degree in Afro-American Studies and Psychology, and holds a Master of Arts in Organization and Leadership from Columbia University. Patrina and Rodney’s paths crossed as fellow cohort members in the George Washington University’s Executive Leadership Program, and they became kindred spirits as they received their doctorates in Human and Organizational Learning together. Rodney discusses his research on African American male educators and how they navigate being non-prototypical leaders in predominantly white schools. He explains how Black men can establish shared identities with their students while still maintaining their Blackness as central to who they are, as well as the legacy of Black men finding joy in resiliency. Rodney and Patrina discuss the importance of self-care for Black leaders in particular, diversity in independent schools, and the experience of being a child now versus twenty years ago. They talk about the growing political awareness and activism of today’s youth, and how the average person can make a meaningful difference to make the world a bit more just. They end with a powerful conversation about equity, race relations, and privilege in America, and Patrina asks Rodney what being joyful means to him. Episode Highlights: Rodney and Patrina’s journey receiving their doctorates together, and immediate attraction to one another’s joyful energy Rodney’s dissertation based in the social identity theory of leadership, as well as the concept of gendered racism Overcoming race as a barrier when people do not see themselves in a leader How Black men navigate being a leader in predominantly white schools, and finding ways to connect through shared identities while also maintaining their Blackness as a central part of who they are Blackness, identity, and separation versus connection Legacy of persevering through hard times and finding joy in taking on obstacles Importance of self-care and replenishing so that you don’t operate at a deficit Rodney’s work with children and his DMV Conference Greater political awareness and activism amongst younger generation Difference between equity and equality, advocate and ally How the average person can make a meaningful difference to make the world a bit more just The importance of love and connection The challenge to be Anti-Racist in a country that has built itself on the privilege of white male supremacy Rodney’s connection between joy and peace Quotes: “When some folks who are not as joyful meet folks who are truly joyful, there’s one of two reactions - either, how can I get some of that? Or how can I stop them from having that because I can’t have it?” “The theory is that you find ways in which you share identities. You don’t go for the identities that separate, you go for the identities that connect… But at the same time, I felt like that can also be an assimilationist tactic.” “I was really interested in, how do, in this case Black men, be successful in leading, and still center their Blackness, if that is the center of their identity?” “One of the most important findings was these men saw themselves as a part of that deep legacy of Black folk and Black men who showed up regardless, showed up in spite of, showed up even though they knew it was stacked against them, because they also knew their own resiliency to break through those walls if they just persisted.” “Part of my joy is my perseverance through hard times.” “As people of color, we’re so ingrained into a selflessness that can also be self-defeating.” “There is profound wisdom in the flight attendants telling you to put your own mask on first before trying to render aid and assistance to others.” “Independent schools are powerful because disproportionately, the leaders of the world come from independent schools.” “People had this moment of time in this country…and it was a very different time for kids. And then when the backlash hit, easily kids picked up on it and we also started to re-indoctrinate kids into the systems of oppression.” “What is beautiful about this particular generation of kids is that in the midst of all of that, they’ve learned so much more about politics, the way government works, social activism, and political activism, no matter what their views are.” “So equity gets us more into that point of, ‘I’m not going to give everybody the same, but I am going to give everybody what they need and at the same level of meeting that need.’” “We really lost key elements of our identities in this notion that equality is where we should go.” “I think that joy and peace have to go together because you can’t actually feel the experience of joy if you’re under stress, if you’re not at peace.” “Privilege sounds joyful, but it actually is very burdensome, and it is the lack of joy.” “Joy in action is infectious.” Links: Joyfully You Life homepage Joyfully You Life Instagram Joyfully You Life Facebook Joyfully You Life Twitter Joyfully You Life linktree Rodney Glasgow homepage

Today we dive into all things related to Brock Long's impressive career as a change agent and leader in emergency management. We talk about the complexities of a FEMA response in coordinated response, the need for disaster declaration reform, moving forward with a career in mind, and how to better prepare for disaster through mitigation. Brock speaks extensively about the mitgation process and changes that need to happen at FEMA and State governments to clear the way for communities to become Disaster Tough. "Brock Long is the former Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Confirmed in June 2017 by the US Senate with strong bipartisan support (95-4), Brock served as the Nation’s principal advisor to the President responsible for coordinating the entire array of federal government resources down through 50 states, 573 tribal governments, and 16 island territories to assist them with executing disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. Brock is the 10th Administrator and the youngest to hold the office. While serving as Administrator, Brock coordinated the federal government’s response to over 144 Presidentially declared disasters and 112 wildfires, including three of the Nation’s most devastating hurricanes and five of the worst wildfires ever experienced. During this time, nearly $44 billion of disaster activity occurred under the various federal recovery programs. "As the FEMA Administrator, Brock led two major initiatives which will have long-lasting impacts on the emergency management community. He rapidly transformed the agency’s business enterprise by implementing innovative Community Lifeline and FEMA Integration Team concepts to strengthen public-private partnerships and permanently embed full-time staff within the offices of state and tribal governments to better meet constituent needs. Further, as the result of effective advocacy and eight influential Congressional testimonies, Congress passed the Disaster Recovery Reform Act and made pre-disaster mitigation a national priority, provided meaningful changes to the FEMA workforce, and bolstered state and local emergency management capability. Life lessons aren't usually learned easily. Keisha Blair was thirty-one years old. The happy mother of two young children, one just eight-weeks-old when her husband died unexpectedly from a rare disease at only age thirty-four. Unable to comprehend what had just happened, Keisha walked out of the hospital room with her husbands' personal items in a white plastic bag. One thing she did know at that moment, life is short. Life is Short Keisha stumbled through the next few weeks making plans to bury her young husband, losing 40 pounds in only a couple of weeks. Devastation, sadness, overwhelm, coupled with having an infant and toddler to care for took its toll on her. She began to second-guess herself, have regrets and her thoughts went around in circles. She thought so much about her husband, Garfield, and what legacy he had left behind. After doing so much thinking, she realized that she needed to take drastic action to figure out who she wanted to be and what legacy she wanted to leave behind. So, she put her things in storage and took a sabbatical. Keisha realized she did not want to take on a victim mentality harboring self-pity. She began journaling as a hobby, a way to organize her thoughts, and plan for her future. By sheer chance, several months before his death, Blair and her husband had consulted with their financial professional, who urged them to buy life insurance policies, given that they had a toddler and another baby on the way. That prescient moment gave Blair, who recently founded The Modern Widow site, financial security for herself and her two young sons—and a new take on the future. "While you don't know how much time you have, you still have to think about how long your life might be, as well as what the next generation needs." ~NYTimes Life Lessons On sabbatical, Keisha learned to really tune in to her intuition. This was part of her grieving process. She "learned the hard way as loss and grief made me [realize] that living life "business as usual" — constantly in survival mode — is no way to live." ~ Thrive Global She and her two young children ate a predominantly organic, whole-foods diet. Meals she made with her own two hands, savoring the process. Keisha practiced spiritual self-renewal by praying and meditating and helped others. Along the path to her healing, Keisha realized that her "own healing would come by reaching outward not inward." With spiritual transformation, the focus of your life has gone through an evolution- its not focussed on the valleys anymore — it's now focused on turning those valleys into mountaintops — through serving humanity and achieving happiness in the now. ~ Thrive Global article This was just the beginning of what was to be Keisha's viral post, comprised of 40 lessons she had learned from her husband's early death. Later, the book would be expanded and reorganized into Holistic Wealth: 32 Life Lessons to Help You Find Purpose Prosperity, and Happiness. You can also grab the awesome workbook to help you work through the book. The workbook is a road map that shows you how to build a thriving and healthy life where you prioritize what is most important. After receiving an Advanced Reader, I knew I had to talk with Keisha, and also provide a copy of her book for my adult daughters. I want them to cultivate these strengths and continue building the mental toughness needed to weather life's inevitable storms and setbacks. Why does great service come from the heart? On today's episode, Christopher sits with his hero Ken Blanchard. One of the greatest authors of all time shares why legendary customer service matters, the power that true servant leadership holds, and so much more. Exemplifying Simple Truths Christopher has personally looked up to Ken since reading the life-changing book, The One-Minute Manager. When he dropped out of school and had to seek other ways of learning, Christopher turned to the book that he has given to many others in return. Simplicity marks everything that Ken writes and teaches. The living legend has written over 60 books, with a new one inspired by the story of Johnny the Bagger, The Simple Truths of Service. “My mission statement is to be a loving teacher and example of simple truths.” - Ken Blanchard Great, Simple Service Everyone can make a difference in customer service without having to do anything complicated and by simply reaching out to customers and making them feel important. Great service that makes a difference comes from the heart. However, the human ego often sends people off track of being servant leaders. Ego gets in the way of service in two ways. One is through false pride or the “more than” philosophy, where you act like you're better than everyone else. And then there is fear or self-doubt, where you have a “less than” philosophy. “A lot of people say, ‘That's an ego problem?' Sure, you focus on yourself.” - Ken Blanchard on self-doubt Writing for People Growing up, Ken's parents instilled in him the value of staying grounded. When he became president back in junior high, his father reminded him that great leaders are great because people respect and trust them. His mother also taught him to neither think himself beyond others nor let others think they're above him. He has had a lot of valuable learnings in life. And all these motivate him to continue writing books. “I just love learning for people.” - Ken Blanchard To hear more about service and being yourself from Ken himself, download and listen to the episode. Bio: A prominent, sought-after author, speaker, and business consultant, Dr. Ken Blanchard's friends, colleagues, and clients characterize him as one of the most insightful, powerful, and compassionate individuals in business today. He is also the co-founder and Chief Spiritual Officer of The Ken Blanchard Companies, an international management training and consulting firm that he and his wife, Margie Blanchard, began in 1979 in San Diego, California. Ken received a master's degree from Colgate University and a bachelor's and Ph.D. from Cornell University. Ken spends time as a visiting lecturer at his alma mater where he is a trustee emeritus of the Board of Trustees. He also teaches students in the Master of Science in Executive Leadership Program at the University of San Diego. What are the top firms doing to outperform the rest? How are they growing? What’s the silver bullet that’s going to help my firm hit that 16% five-year growth CAGR I’m seeing from the best of the best? These were hot topics at last month’s Charles Schwab IMPACT Conference in Washington, D.C. And of course, the very reason that so many of our industry’s best and brightest were gathered there to speak, learn, and network is that there isn’t one “silver bullet” that’s going to transform your practice in 2019. But some guiding principles for advisors looking to grow did emerge at the conference, which I discussed with Lisa Salvi, Vice President of Business Consulting and Field Experience at Charles Schwab. Lisa and I were joined by Mitch Reiner, Chief Operating Officer, Managing Partner, and Senior Investment Advisor of Capital Investment Advisors, who is a graduate of Schwab’s Executive Leadership Program.

He also discusses how he aims to change the lives of veterans through his work with Project Relo. He talks about the need for leaders throughout the organization – regardless of title. He also discusses how “followership” is key. He defines effective leadership as one where an environment exists where people work outside their comfort zone, innovate, and work with a “spring in their step.” Basically, effective leadership is when people follow willingly. As a leader, Christian creates teams of people who are innovative, support each other through risky situations, and help one another to eliminate the fear of failure. Key Takeaways [3:10] How has Christian’s military experience impacted his role as a leader in the traditional corporate environment? [6:33] We need leaders throughout our entire organization. Anybody and everybody can lead and that is how you get high performance teams. [8:18] Christian paints a vision for people of what is expected of them and then follows with the intention behind the goal. [14:18] If you are going to fail, you are going to fail with your team members who will then propel you past the failure. [20:36] How to get past the fear of failure by moving into unsafe zones. [25:20] Project Relo highlights the abilities of veterans and focuses on leadership objectives. [31:33] When people are pushing themselves into unsafe areas and are innovative, that is when Christian knows he’s being an effective leader. [39:34] Contact information for Christian and Project Relo. Quotable Quotes “Members of the Marine Corps are known to have a certain level of cockiness. It’s because Marines believe they can do anything.” “When you manage risk-to-zero, you simultaneously manage opportunity-to-zero.” “In human relationships, technology is our enemy and not our friend.” Points to Ponder How do you help people be confident, but not arrogant? How do you balance this with humility versus insecurity? Is visioning the role of the leader, or that of the team? Does your team know what extraordinary performance looks like? Is it OK in your environment to make mistakes and sometimes fail because that’s where learning and growth take place? How can you stretch people to do more than they thought they could (beyond normal comfort zones)? What metrics do you have in place to know that your leadership is creating the right environment for people to follow you willingly?
