In this episode, Tatiana dives into the dark side of diet culture – body shame. She explores how societal messages and even healthcare professionals can make us feel inadequate and unworthy because of our body size. But here's the truth: shame is not a motivator, and it doesn't lead to lasting health changes. Tatiana calls on the work of Brené Brown to explain why shame backfires, and explores the power of self-compassion as a path to a healthier body. Disclaimer: The information on this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice. Please consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your diet or exercise routine. Key Points: Body Shame is Everywhere: From airbrushed magazine covers to subtle comments from family, we're constantly bombarded with messages that equate thinness with beauty and value. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and a distorted body image. Shame Doesn't Work: Shame might make you feel bad about yourself, but it won't help you reach your health goals. Studies show that shame-based weight loss approaches have high recidivism rates. The Power of Self-Compassion: Brené Brown defines shame as saying "I am bad." Self-compassion, on the other hand, is about treating yourself with kindness and understanding, even when you make mistakes. The Three Elements of Self-Compassion: According to Kristen Neff, self-compassion consists of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. Self-kindness: Be gentle with yourself, you wouldn't talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself! Common humanity: Remind yourself that everyone struggles, and challenges around weight and body image are common. Mindfulness: Acknowledge your feelings without judgment. Don't get swept away by negativity. Call to Action: This week, practice self-compassion! When you have a setback, show yourself kindness. Remember, you are worthy of love and respect, no matter your size. In this episode, Tatiana tackles the concept of the "almond mom" and its connection to toxic diet culture. She explores the impact these beliefs have on women across generations, emphasizing the importance of challenging internalized ideas about weight, body image, and self-worth. Key Takeaways/Themes: The “Almond Mom” Defined: An “almond mom” is someone who may be overly invested in diet culture, often pressuring themselves and their children around healthy eating, fitness, and body image. Transgenerational Impact: These beliefs about food, weight, and appearance can be passed down from mothers to daughters, creating a cycle of body image insecurity and unhealthy relationships with food. Questioning Beliefs: Tatiana encourages listeners to critically examine the origins of their beliefs around weight and self-worth. Are these beliefs truly yours, or are they echoes of societal pressures or past experiences? Self-Worth Beyond Appearance: Our value and lovability are not defined by our body size or appearance. Challenge the idea that weight or clothing size determines your happiness, relationships, or success. Compassionate Self-Reflection: When you catch yourself having unkind thoughts about your body, take a moment to reflect. Would you judge a loved one so harshly? Extend the same grace and understanding to yourself. In this episode I have a conversation with the wonderful Becky Upchurch and we talk about Abby Wambach's book Wolfpack. Based on her inspiring, viral 2018 commencement speech to Barnard College's graduates in New York City, New York Times bestselling author, two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA World Cup champion Abby Wambach delivers her empowering rally cry for women to unleash their individual power, unite with their pack, and emerge victorious together.Abby Wambach became a champion because of her incredible talent as a soccer player. She became an icon because of her remarkable wisdom as a leader. As the co-captain of the 2015 Women's World Cup Champion Team, she created a culture not just of excellence, but of honor, commitment, resilience, and sisterhood. She helped transform a group of individual women into one of the most successful, powerful and united Wolfpacks of all time.In her retirement, Abby's ready to do the same for her new team: All Women Everywhere. In Wolfpack, Abby's message to women is:We have never been Little Red Riding Hood. We Are the Wolves. We must wander off the path and blaze a new one: together. She insists that women must let go of old rules of leadership that neither include or serve them. She's created a new set of Wolfpack rules to help women unleash their individual power, unite with their Wolfpack, and change the landscape of their lives and world: from the family room to the board room to the White House.· Make failure your fuel: Transform failure to wisdom and power.· Lead from the bench: Lead from wherever you are.· Champion each other: Claim each woman's victory as your own.· Demand the effing ball: Don't ask permission: take what you've earned. In Abby's vision, we are not Little Red Riding Hoods, staying on the path because we're told to. We are the wolves, fighting for a better tomorrow for ourselves, our pack, and all the future wolves who will come after us.If you want to listen to Becky's discussion on setting boundaries go back to episode 16! Today's conversation is with Anisa Fowler who is an international gospel singer. Anisa has a powerful voice and a powerful message. I loved this conversation and her wisdom on what she referred to as “Church Hurt”. She talks about how people are fallible and sometimes people mishandle others but that is distinct and separate from an individual's relationship with the divine. As someone who struggles with her own experiences with organized religion this conversation opened my eyes to another perspective. And while we were talking Anisa said “wherever you shine your truth it should not diminish someone else's being”, and I have been thinking about that ever since we recorded. What if we made that the new Golden Rule? Shine bright, live your truth, just don't try to take other's down when you do that. Are you someone who "gets in her head" (actually, is there anyone out there who doesn't?). The Untethered Soul brings an interesting perspective to that "voice in our head". It helps us understand our relationship with our thoughts and emotions and helped me understand that just because I think something doesn't mean it is real - or about me! The book also explores the source and fluctuations of our inner energy and it delves into what we can do to free ourself of the habitual thoughts, emotions, and energy patterns that limit us. In this episode Nimisha and I discuss our favourite takeaways from the book and share our challenges. Ashton Whitmoyer-Ober who is also known as "Enneagram Ashton" joins me in this episode to talk about the Enneagram which is an ancient personality typing system . Ashton uses her knowledge to help people strengthen their relationships and become the best versions of themselves through the framework of the Enneagram and shares her knowledge on the podcast. One of the most interesting things about the Enneagram is that it uses a number system to put people into types based on motivations. The motivations that the enneagram is based on are what people's biggest desires and their biggest fears are. So instead of typing an individual based on WHAT they do - which is the behaviour - it types individuals based on WHY they do it - which is their motivation.Ashton explains things so clearly and gives examples that help us all understand both the enneagram framework and ourselves better.I invite you to pop in your earbuds and head out for a walk and enjoy the podcast. The word "Mantra" is derived from Sanskrit. The common translations are “a tool for the mind” and “that which clears the mind”. An affirmation validates or confirm something. These are two useful self-care tools and in this mini episode I describe the differences in how they can be used. This week I give you the following mantra and hope it will give you some inner peace. I let go of what I can't change and accept what is. My heart will guide the way to happiness and health.
I wanted to call this episode "how to set boundaries without seeming like a meanie" but it seemed a bit long... But seriously, how many of us feel like setting boundaries is unkind or that we are being mean when we set them? In my head I know that boundaries aren't mean but I still have that little voice in my head that tells me it kinda is. Then I had this conversation with Becky and it really helped me see how me setting boundaries helps not only me but those around me.In this episode Becky talks about how we can set boundaries and she gives us different approaches to find what works for us. By the end of this podcast you will have concrete steps that you can take in order to start the process of setting boundaries with confidence knowing that what you are doing is not mean or selfish but a normal part of healthy relationships. But that doesn't mean it will be easy...So if it isn't a clear yes then you know it is a clear no. Many of us will have feelings of not belonging at some point in our life. Maybe it is at work, maybe it is in our neighbourhood, maybe it's even within our friend group. Wanting to belong and be part of a community is natural and so often we put on a facade or hide our true selves in order to be accepted. However, while the facade can feel like a protective armour - it is a heavy burden. The effort required to maintain the facade can result in heightened anxiety and fatigue. In this episode Rachelle opens up and shares her feelings of not belonging because of being biracial. Eventually the fatigue of trying to keep up a facade and pretend to be something that wasn't true to her caused an emotional breakdown. But that breakdown eventually led to a deeper understanding of herself. By the end of this podcast you will have concrete steps that you can take in order to start the process of reconnecting with your true self and start the process of creating a life that you truly love and where you don't have to pretend anymore. The workbook Rachelle mentioned was Danielle La Porte's Fire Starter Sessions.
