On this Friday edition of Daily Detroit, hosts Devon and Jer kick things off with a victory lap for Devon, who accurately predicted the opening of an Apple Store in Detroit nearly three years ago. La Pecora Nera is expanding with a second location in Birmingham, and Devon shares his favorite sandwiches of their downtown shop. The hosts shifted gears, sharing recent experiences at local establishments. Devon reported on Birdie's, a new restaurant concept at the Dearborn Hills Golf Course, while Jer lauded the Italian eatery Beppe in Royal Oak. When it comes to the new Fan Duel deal with Amazon, is it Fan Don't? We're disappointed as we had hoped a deal with Amazon might mean better pricing to watch the Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers. Dr. Najifa Choudhury is an ambulatory care pharmacist and founder of a CBD company, Dr. Peace Lily. Through her formal education and training, she specialized in geriatric care with a focus on holistic healing. As a pharmacist, she values and trusts prescription medications but noticed most patients are fast to take a pill to fix their problems rather than figure out the root cause and try non-pharmacological options first. As a health care professional, she believes everyone should have a holistic approach to healing and not just medicating. Three years ago, when she was suffering from stress & anxiety, she looked for natural ways to help calm her racing thoughts and during that journey of healing, she discovered the plant medicine that is CBD and all its health benefits! CBD has helped Dr. Choudhury take back control of her life and changed the initial negative stigma she had about CBD. After using CBD herself and researching the cannabis industry extensively, she found two major issues: firstly, the immense knowledge gap amongst healthcare professionals when it came to CBD, and secondly, how unregulated the industry is. She decided to solve both of these issues and overcome this general incompetency around CBD, and as a result, launched her own company in 2019, Dr. Peace Lily - and has been impacting lives ever since. She has been able to grow her company by 400% in the last year and launch her products into retail in Metro Detroit. In the summer of 2021, She decided to focus on Dr. Peace Lily full-time and quit her ambulatory care pharmacist job. The transition felt seamless when she realized she was making such a positive impact on the Detroit community with her business. Her main goal is to empower more patients through education and to bridge the gap between prescription medications and CBD. With how much the brand has grown so far and the influence it has been making in the lives of the community and others, she has considered raising capital to scale her business as the goal is to be a leading CBD company founded by a healthcare professional. So far her work has been featured in numerous media outlets such as Cosmopolitan Magazine, WXYZ Channel 7, SEEN, HOUR Detroit, Top Doc, Authority, and others. Her love of wanting to educate and empower patients as a CBD health consultant to be their best advocate has been extremely evident, and she is often asked to speak at conferences and give keynote speeches about pharmacology, CBD, and cannabis-related topics. www.payalghayal.com

Welcome back to Daily Detroit, your go-to podcast for all things happening in Southeast Michigan. In today's episode, Jer Staes is joined by journalist Steve Friess to dive deep into the current political landscape leading up to the general election. They kick things off with a discussion on early voting in Michigan, expressing confusion over the lack of a coordinated push from election officials and candidates alike. The conversation then shifts to the national stage, examining the recent poll numbers that show a tight race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, with a surprising 9.7% for RFK Jr. They debate the implications of these numbers and the potential influence of RFK Jr.'s candidacy on the election outcome. Jer and Steve also explore the impact of the Dobbs decision on the women's vote and the importance of having Kamala Harris, a vocal abortion rights proponent, at the top of the ticket. They discuss the potential VP picks for Harris, weighing the pros and cons of candidates like Mark Kelly, Josh Shapiro, and Pete Buttigieg. We talk about the Michigan Senate race, highlighting the head-to-head poll showing Elissa Slotkin leading over Mike Rogers in the General. They discuss the challenges in the Democratic Primary that Hill Harper faces as a first-time candidate and the broader implications for Michigan politics. And finally Jer and Steve both reviews of the Gretchen Whitmer book, "True Gretch," and came to two different conlusions. His goal was to have a practice where he could treat his patients and staff like his own family. So, in 2010 he opened the Royal Oak office with the dream of creating an environment people would want to be a part of. He started with no patients and built the practice from scratch. In the beginning there was one receptionist and one assistant, and Dr. Daboul performed all the teeth cleanings. Today, North Oaks Dental has several dentists, an orthodontist, and hygienists, plus a large staff to care for your whole family. We've grown so much that we expanded our office to 13 rooms in 2015. Ricarlo Flanagan was not only an amazing comedian, rapper, and actor, he was an amazing human being. Everyone that knew Ricarlo loved him. He will always remain one of the most naturally funny people I've ever had the pleasure to know and perform with.  Ricarlo was a staple in the Michigan comedy scene before making his way to LA. The interview I share was our reunion conversation after not literally seeing or talking for some time. In our conversation, we picked up right where we left off before he left for comedy and TV fame.  The interview is from January 2021 and Ricarlo passed away in October 2021. Having seen Ricarlo on Mad About You in December 2020. I called him and we found time to record this conversation together. It was great to share laughs with an old friend and hear about all of his successes.  Ricarlo has a comedy album (Man Law) available on Amazon Music and can be seen in The Mick, Shameless, Walk The Prank, Mad About You, and Room104 to name a few of his many TV appearances.  Notably, Ricarlo also was a semi-finalist on the 9th season of Last Comic Standing.  Ricarlo had just begun when his life was sadly cut short but together let's celebrate a man that went all in during the time he did share with us.  Our Guest, Ricarlo Flanagan Man Law (album)  https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6561255/ Also featured on the show: Michigan Peeps - vote for my podcast! During The Breast of Everything podcast, Comprehensive Breast Care Surgeon Eric Brown, MD; talked with Plastic Surgeon William Stefani, MD; about reconstructive surgery after breast surgery, and what women should know. Dr. Stefani is a board certified plastic surgeon who also completed a fellowship in aesthetic surgery. He has been voted “Top Doctor” many times by Hour Detroit magazine, Consumer Guide and Castle Connolly (an organization that helps consumers find top doctors and the best health care in America), and practices at some of Michigan's top ranked hospitals. Many years ago, women underwent a radical mastectomy with massive reconstruction of the chest wall with back flaps. Fortunately, this archaic technique has taken a revolutionary turn and has been replaced with a new procedure that truly has changed a woman's appearance … and her life. Today, surgeons will do everything in their power, not only to remove all of the cancer, but also to restore a woman's natural-looking breasts so she will have a cosmetic outcome that makes her feel and look great again. In many cases, a woman can have one reconstructive implant surgery, Dr. Stefani reports. The second option involves surgically implanting a tissue expander after the mastectomy, followed by a permanent implant at a later time. During the tissue expander surgery, the plastic surgeon expands the breast skin and muscle using a temporary tissue expander (an inflatable breast implant). A few months later, during the second surgery, the expander is removed and replaced by a breast implant. Dr. Stefani chooses the best option for his patients based on what he calls “mapping” of the breast to see what the tissue looks like after surgery, and to determine which procedure provides the safest and best results.During the podcast, Dr. Stefani also talked about animation deformity in breast reconstruction. To alleviate this problem, he performs a pre-pectoral reconstruction on top of the muscle instead of under it. This holds the implant in position better, there is no risk of the implant extruding through the incision and the outcome is “beautiful,” he reports. The breast looks natural, softer and it alleviates what he calls “animatory movement.”Dr. Stefani and Dr. Brown also discussed the importance of breast cancer patients quitting smoking at least six weeks prior to breast surgery. Smoking causes a tightening of the blood vessels that delays and decreases wound healing capabilities. The controversy regarding breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BI-ALCL) also was a topic of discussion. Social media has created an unnecessarily alarming concern for women with breast implants, the doctors find. BI-ALCL is very rare, generally very slow-moving, and affects only a small number of women who primarily have received textured implants, which Dr. Stefani does not use. Fewer than 10 patients a year are diagnosed with BI-ALCL, while there are more than 10 million women globally who have breast implants. The doctors also talked about breast implant-associated illness. This term describes a wide range of mostly mild and easily treatable symptoms that can develop from implants. __________________________________If you have a subject you would like the surgeons to discuss, please email your ideas to https://compbreastcare.com. The Round Table: A Next Generation Politics Podcast

As we all attempt to collectively move forward with the 2020 election and look towards combating the nation's pressing issues at hand, it is nearly impossible to do so without taking into account what Donald Trump will do now that he has effectively lost the election. Steve Friess, a reporter from Michigan who is the News & Features Editor at Hour Detroit and writes about the election for @newsweek, paints our podcast listeners a picture of what the nation and the status of the presidency could potentially look like knowing that Trump will attempt to do anything in his power to stay in the White House and spare himself and his administration from suffering the legal consequences of his actions over the past four years. “I just hope you folks do a much better job than we have.” With a palpable touch of optimism in his closing words, Steve Friess addressed our podcast team and young people as a whole in hopes of encouraging collective change now that we find ourselves heading into a new era with a new leader. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nextgenpolitics/message

The 2020 election has undoubtedly embodied the lack of precedence in every regard imaginable. With the COVID-19 pandemic enabling a monumental surge of mail-in ballots in almost every state in the nation, a wide array of questions and concerns as to how to handle them have inevitably arised. In our recent conversation with Steve Friess, a reporter from Michigan who is the News & Features Editor at Hour Detroit and writes about the election for Newsweek and other national publications, our podcaster Eliza asked him how he believes mail-in ballots will affect the voting count and the election as a whole as we move forward from November third. “The sheer volume of absentee or mail-in ballots this year is extraordinary and there are only so many people that work in the elections department in a given place.” In the midst of all of the surrounding uncertainty looming over the election's aftermath right now, we invite you to tune in. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nextgenpolitics/message

Following on the heels of our conversation with Yasmeen Serhan about international perception of the election, Eliza, Isaiah, and Madeline spoke with Steve Friess, a reporter from Michigan who is the News& Features Editor at Hour Detroit and writes about the election for Newsweek and other national publications. Contested elections aren't new to Steve: he was a reporter in Palm Beach County during the 2000 election. We explored many of the questions on people's minds: the unusual nature of this particular election, the challenge of how some states are handling absentee ballots, how far some of the polls seemed to be from how results are actually turning out, and the future of Trumpism beyond Trump's time in the Presidency. This is an anxious time for many of us across the political spectrum, and we feel fortunate to engage in some civic sense-making with Steve and now with you. Thank you for joining us! First WRC-TV (thanks Frank!) looks inside the lives of DC's blue collar cats and Forbes (thanks Jasmine!) profiles 'functional beverages' as the next trend that everyone's going to be talking about! Last week’s #caskquiz question asked if you are digging any spicy beers, and if so what are they? This week is a #caskquiz rewind: “how much are YOU spending on craft beer each month?” We so love hearing from you! Please send in feedback and beer suggestions by calling us at (919) 502-0280, Tweeting us, following our Instagram or friending us on Untappd, posting on and liking our Facebook page, or emailing us! As one of the very first people of color to review popular music for a major daily newspaper, Jim McFarlin spent an enormous amount of time with the world’s best-known musicians. However, getting cover stories from Bob Seeger and Ted Nugent and Kid Rock seemed easy compared to fighting for his identity as a small boy…and fighting for his life as an adult. Jim has not only battled racism over the years but, about a decade ago, he began battling kidney failure. The stories (and lessons) associated with each are incredibly powerful, and the stories in-between—the ones with Nugent and Seeger and Kid Rock and Aretha—are nearly unbelievable. Jim McFarlin is best known for the 16 years he spent working at the Detroit News as a pop music critic and media columnist, interviewing many of the world’s biggest superstars. Currently, he is a freelance writer for publications including Drive, CS, Hour Detroit, Men’s Book Chicago, and many others. Jim has also written 8 books, and is now working on his 9th—a novel about his experiences growing up as “a small black kid in a small white town.”

Jamie and Matt recored live at Detroit City Distillery in the Eastern Market. Sitting down with us is Cole Levy Brand Ambassador for DCD. Before the show we kicked things off with the ‘Sassy Old Fashioned’ An Old Fashioned made with their own homemade sarsaparilla. Cole came to the table with a pair of Manhattans made with their own homegrown Rye. We talked about their line of spirits, the extensive drink list, the great building and story behind it and so much more. Then a second round with two different cocktails from Cole: 'Blueberry Velvet’ made with the Peacemaker Gin' and a ‘Consciously Caffeinated made with Milk-wash Bourbon. Both just wow. www.DetroitCityDistillery.com www.whiskeyfactorydetroit.com www.ManCaveHappyHour.com @DJJamieDetroit @fox_beazlefox

I stopped by Bike Works Beach and Sport, Queens Marketplace, Kohala Coast, Island of Hawaii and had a good time talking story with owner and long time friend Grant Miller and some of the Bike Works team. Grant Miller talks about the Run For Hops on Saturday March 11 to benefit PATH, The Hawaii Cycling Club activities including the Century Ride for Hospice April 9. Grant talks about his of off road biking and the trail cutting efforts of Big Island Mountain Biking ohana and PATH (People's Advocacy Trails Hawaii). Ellie Sumic has info on Lava Kids, and the Waikoloa Lavaman weekend including the March 31 Bike Works Sunset 5k Run/Walk. John Hill, Bike Works Mechanic has bike maintenance suggestions and Carolyn Comandini on what's available at Bike Works. Also a guest this week is Jeff Waraniak, who I met last summer in my hometown Detroit. Jeff is a mountain bike enthusiast and he told me a story about reaching out to the Big Island Mountain Bike ohana that Bike Works is such a part of and the warm welcome they gave him. He shared that story and also lots of positive stories about biking opportunities in Detroit and invitation to get in touch with him for a warm welcome if going to Detroit. Jeff is an Associate Editor at HOUR Detroit Magazine and has written many nice stories. We talked about couple subjects from some of his wonderful comprehensive storytelling. One about the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center and the impact of opening up in downtown Detroit. The other is about Detroit was certainly the city of Champions when in October 1935, the Tigers won their first World Series. In December, the Lions won their first NFL championship, and in April 1936 the Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup, and a day later, the Detroit Olympics, the Wings’ minor league affiliate, won their championship in the International Hockey League. Held all three titles. Like myself, many Detroiters did not know this till recently.
