Hollywood and the Media Truth About Drug Gangs and Police. Special Episode. The portrayal of law enforcement and criminal organizations in Hollywood has long shaped public perception. However, the media's representation of police work and the realities of drug gangs often diverge from the truth. Dr. Stephen Morreale, a retired DEA agent, college professor, and host of The Cop Doc Podcast, is dedicated to dispelling these myths. Ballistics are a critical forensic tool in criminal investigations today, but how they work is a mystery to most people. We discuss the science of ballistics with ATF Special Agent in Charge Chris Amon. Christopher Amon was appointed as the Special Agent in Charge for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Chicago Field Division in March of 2023. As the Special Agent in Charge, Mr. Amon has responsibility over ATF operations in the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, The Eastern District of Wisconsin, and the Northern District of Indiana. Before arriving in Chicago, SAC Amon served as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge in the Washington Field Division since August 2020. In this role, Special Agent Amon supervised all ATF criminal enforcement operations in Washington, D.C. Prior to this assignment, SAC Amon served as Chief of the Firearms Operation Division at ATF Headquarters, managing the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN), the NIBIN National Correlation and Training Center (NNCTC), and ATF's Crime Gun Intelligence Programs. He was also the Chairman of the National Crime Gun Intelligence Governing Board consisting of Chiefs of Police, United States Attorneys, District Attorneys, and Laboratory Directors from major cities nationwide. SAC Amon began his career as a Special Agent in the Denver Field Division in 2005. He investigated violent crime and firearms trafficking organizations and was a crisis negotiator of ATF's Los Angeles Special Response Team. Ballistics are a critical forensic tool in criminal investigations today, but how they work is a mystery to most people. We discuss the science of ballistics with ATF Special Agent in Charge Chris Amon. Christopher Amon was appointed as the Special Agent in Charge for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Chicago Field Division in March of 2023. As the Special Agent in Charge, Mr. Amon has responsibility over ATF operations in the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, The Eastern District of Wisconsin, and the Northern District of Indiana. Before arriving in Chicago, SAC Amon served as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge in the Washington Field Division since August 2020. In this role, Special Agent Amon supervised all ATF criminal enforcement operations in Washington, D.C. Prior to this assignment, SAC Amon served as Chief of the Firearms Operation Division at ATF Headquarters, managing the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN), the NIBIN National Correlation and Training Center (NNCTC), and ATF's Crime Gun Intelligence Programs. He was also the Chairman of the National Crime Gun Intelligence Governing Board consisting of Chiefs of Police, United States Attorneys, District Attorneys, and Laboratory Directors from major cities nationwide. SAC Amon began his career as a Special Agent in the Denver Field Division in 2005. He investigated violent crime and firearms trafficking organizations and was a crisis negotiator of ATF's Los Angeles Special Response Team. The case of former Stoughton Police Detective Matthew Farwell, who is accused of murdering Sandra Birchmore, has sparked calls for additional charges under the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. Farwell, 38, allegedly killed Birchmore, 23, in her Canton apartment on February 1, 2021, after she revealed she was pregnant with his child. Farwell's indictment includes charges related to the murder of Birchmore, who was about two months pregnant at the time. Prosecutors allege Farwell strangled Birchmore and staged her death to appear as a suicide. The disturbing details of the case have led some to argue for the inclusion of an additional charge related to the unborn child. “It is hard to imagine a more clear-cut case for enforcing federal law for protecting unborn children than this one,” said Roger Severino, Vice President of Domestic Policy at the Heritage Foundation. “The very existence of the unborn child was the very evidence against this monster.” Birchmore had shared her excitement about the pregnancy with Farwell through a text message, including a photo of a handmade card that read, “Congrats, we are going to be parents!” However, Farwell allegedly reacted negatively to the news, leading to the fatal incident. Assistant Special Agent in Charge Steve Kelleher from the Boston FBI emphasized the severity of Farwell's actions: “Matthew Farwell's gun and badge did not grant him authority to violate the Constitution and certainly didn't entitle him to sexually exploit, abuse, and rape a child before killing her and her unborn baby in an attempt to cover up his alleged crime.” The Unborn Victims of Violence Act, also known as "Laci and Conner's Law," could be applied in this case. The law, enacted in 2004, allows for separate charges if an unborn child is harmed or killed during a federal crime. Activists, including Colbe Mazzarella, president of the Pro-Life Legal Defense Fund, and Autumn Christensen of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, are pushing for the application of this law to Farwell's case. “The accusation that a police officer killed his former student and their unborn baby strikes horror in every feeling heart,” Mazzarella said. “This law was passed by Republicans and Democrats to punish and prevent many abusers who kill pregnant women or use violence to force a woman to abort their child.” Critics of the law, including the American Civil Liberties Union, argue that it could undermine a woman's right to make decisions about her own pregnancy. The ACLU has expressed concerns that recognizing the unborn child as a separate victim could threaten reproductive rights. Despite these concerns, the FBI's Kelleher noted additional evidence that Birchmore had no intention of suicide, including recent attempts to book a newborn photo shoot and purchase baby clothes. “Our investigation also uncovered evidence inconsistent with someone choosing to die by suicide,” he said. The federal prosecutors have left the door open for additional charges, and the possibility remains that Farwell could face further legal repercussions. ICE is the largest investigative arm within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the second largest investigative agency in the federal government. ICE has more than 20,000 Special Agents, Officers and other employees and has an annual budget of more than $8 billion. ICE is charged with protecting the homeland through criminal and civil enforcement of federal laws governing border control, customs trade, and immigration. ICE Agents are located in more than 400 offices in the United States and 46 foreign countries.From 2013 to his Presidential Appointment, Mr. Homan served as the Executive Associate Director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). In this capacity, he led ICE's efforts to identify, arrest, detain, and remove illegal aliens, including those who present a danger to national security or are a risk to public safety, as well as those who enter the United States illegally or otherwise undermine the integrity of our immigration laws and our border control efforts. In those three years while he served as the EAD, Homan oversaw the removal of more than one million illegal aliens from the United States. Mr. Homan is a 34-year veteran of law enforcement and has nearly 33 years of immigration enforcement experience. He has served as a police officer in New York; a U.S. Border Patrol Agent; a Special Agent with the former U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service; as well as Supervisory Special Agent and Deputy Assistant Director for Investigations. In 1999, Mr. Homan became the Assistant District Director for Investigations (ADDI) in San Antonio, Texas, and three years later transferred to the ADDI position in Dallas, Texas. Upon the creation of ICE, Mr. Homan was named as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge in Dallas and later to the Deputy Special Agent in Charge. In March 2009, Mr. Homan accepted the position of Assistant Director for Enforcement at ICE Headquarters in Washington DC and was subsequently promoted to Deputy Executive Associate Director. Mr. Homan holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and has received numerous awards and special recognitions for his 34 plus years as a federal law enforcement officer and leader.He received the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award in 2015 for his exemplary leadership and extensive accomplishments in the area of immigration enforcement. He also received the Distinguished Service Medal in June 2018 in recognition of exceptionally distinguished and transformational service to strengthen Homeland Security for the United States. Again in 2018 he also received the Law Enforcement Person of the Year Award from the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association that represents over 26,000 federal law enforcement officers. Between 1992 and 2006, Mr. Bodner worked the streets of Los Angeles as a DEA Special Agent and Group Supervisor. Mr. Bodner has leveraged his extensive career in Los Angeles to develop and improve upon partnerships with state, local and other federal agencies. Mr. Bodner' s vision is to conduct very impactful investigations on the most significant Drug Trafficking Organizations posing a threat to our region, keeping in mind the goal of improving the quality of life for those in our communities. One of the biggest challenges in helping victims of human trafficking is reiterating the importance of a victim-centered approach. When law enforcement agents are new to human trafficking, they must remember that someone is not in a sex-trafficking position because they want to be. A lot of manipulation is behind the situation, along with prior trauma that may have led that individual to their awful situation.  These cases differ from other investigations, such as drugs, guns, and gangs. They affect human lives, and these individuals will be the key to making the case. When working with these human trafficking cases, there needs to be an element of compassion while also being careful about removing biases. [01:09] Profile of this episode's guest: Alia El-Sawi - Victim Assistance Specialist at Homeland Security Investigations Alia has been a Victim Assistance Specialist with Homeland Security Investigations since 2010. Before her work with HSI, she served as the Anti-Human Trafficking Program Coordinator for a nonprofit organization called Tapestri. She has received many awards and recognitions, including Georgia Trend's “Top 40 Under 40” Georgians, Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta's “Top 40 under 40”, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Directors Award.  [02:29] What is human trafficking? While human trafficking and human smuggling can be related, they are different. Both may involve movement of some sort. However, smuggling generally is done with the goal of the person having a better quality of life. Human trafficking consists of an ulterior motive by the trafficker to exploit the individual. With human trafficking, the individual may not understand or fully know they're being brought somewhere for an exploitative purpose. They may have been promised a job, but that job ends up looking very different. Labor trafficking is a form of human trafficking that uses force, fraud, or coercion to recruit individuals for some particular employment where the individuals end up in servitude. Sex trafficking involves commercial sex, where an individual is forced into what some refer to as forced prostitution. [11:25] Alia's role at Tapestri and journey to Homeland Security Investigations Alia started working in the anti-human trafficking field with Tapestri, a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. At Tapestri, Alia provided direct services for survivors of both labor trafficking and sex trafficking of juveniles and adults, specifically within the various immigrant and refugee communities. Because of her work with Tapestri, Alia spent a lot of time building connections with local, state, and federal law enforcement. She referred case after case that agents could successfully present to the U.S. Attorney's Office, which successfully prosecuted. When the role of Victim Assistance Specialist opened in Atlanta, the supervisor and Assistant Special Agent in Charge approached Alia about the position. [19:00] Services available to those who have been victims of human trafficking Most of the time, Alia relies on the networks and resources she's built over the years that continue with the nonprofit world, direct service providers, child advocacy centers, and expands into the medical realm. Alia works with many medical professionals, such as behavioral health and substance abuse facilities.  Many faith-based communities are willing and eager to help the efforts by providing volunteers. Sometimes services look like anything from food banks to language access through English as a second language classes for an individual. [26:35] Staying motivated in difficult cases People ask Alia how she keeps from being depressed about such a heavy topic. She hangs on to the success stories because she knows people can escape their darkest days and walk into the light. There was one case that followed Alia as she moved from Tapestri to HSI. She saw the young lady go through the process and get the resources she needed to grow into a young lady doing exceptionally well. [30:03] The role of mobile forensics in human trafficking cases With the internet, there is, unfortunately, easier access to a variety of people. Many are recruited online through various means of social media. Social media with messaging, video, or photo capabilities are a breeding ground for trafficking and create an easier way for traffickers to infiltrate and start casual conversations with both adults and juveniles. Cell phones are a vital component of human trafficking investigations. Having the information on cell phones is the easiest way to unveil more of what's happening. [37:23] The future of fighting human trafficking Continue to raise awareness. As a country, the U.S. has come a long way in building awareness. Even globally, many strides have been taken to advance the fight. All sorts of legislation are being passed that help provide additional resources for the victims.  Dispelling human trafficking myths will help accurately detect what human trafficking is so more people can know what some of the red flags are and refer cases to help provide victims with the help they need. In April of 2013, using his experience on both the Hostage Rescue Team and the Crisis Negotiation Unit, retired FBI Special Agent Kyle Vowinkel worked with the CNU in order to secure the peaceful surrender of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the two Boston Marathon bombers.    On this bonus edition of The FOX True Crime Podcast, Emily takes a look at Kyle's illustrious career in law enforcement. Kyle Vowinkel served for 24 years as an FBI Special Agent is a former U.S. Army officer, and is a West Point graduate. Kyle served on both the FBI's elite Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) and the Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNU). After his assignments on HRT and the CNU, he used his leadership experiences as a supervisor at multiple FBI offices and retired as Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) in the Miami Division. During his Bureau career, Kyle was deployed to over twenty countries, including China, Qatar, Kenya, South Korea, and Peru, and as a tactical operator on HRT on hundreds of high-risk missions domestically as well as overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. While a member of CNU, he negotiated with kidnappers, pirates, and more. Kyle is a keynote inspirational speaker at events around the world for companies and institutions such as West Point, Cornell University, Google, hostage negotiation seminars, and FBI National Academy events. On May 31, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) sent two separate letters—one to Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Chris Wray  and a second letter to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz. In these letters, Grassley leveled a serious allegation, noting: “It has come to my attention that while serving in a highly sensitive role that includes threshold decision-making over which Federal public corruption matters are opened for investigation, Assistant Special Agent in Charge at the Washington Field Office, Timothy Thibault, likely violated several federal regulations and Department guidelines designed to prevent political bias from infecting FBI matters.” As Grassley would later note, “Thibault is a high-ranking FBI agent” in the Washington Field Office.
