Shmuel is a 2L at Chicago-Kent College of Law and works as an Intern at the Illinois Office of the State Attorney's Appellate Prosecutor. Shmuel's journey to the Law is just starting, but it's been nothing short of living the dream thus far! Shmuel and I start before he arrives at Law School. It was High School and Shmuel Applied and gained an internship at the Los Angeles County District Attorney. Being so young as an intern, he would become a sponge to all that he was learning, watching trials, and learning from his bosses, keeping a close eye on everything that went on. From that experience, he knew going forward, going to Law School was his dream. He would return to the same District Attorney's office for 2 out of the 3 next summers, before heading off to Touro College Los Angeles. During his time there, he would hold an additional file clerkship as well as work as a teacher's assistant at the same school he attended, for the same teacher he had. For Shmuel, this experience delivered on building those all-important soft skills, communication skills, and especially with 4th graders, having a ton of patience. We then moved to his entry into Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he would be shocked by the fact that he made it to Law School, describing it as living the dream! He would love the first year as well, having interesting material to work with, and the chance to focus solely on school. Shmuel would describe the various internships, clerkships, and externships he held throughout the last 2 years, up until the present day. One clerkship, in particular, was found through this podcast, as Shmuel would work for former guest, Yisrael Gelb, at Gelb Law APC. Shmuel would find Yisrael through this podcast, meet with him, and then many months later, would see Yisrael was looking for employees, and would reach out leading to an eventual hire, a prime example of the power of networking! Finally, Shmuel would speak about how his faith would play an impact on his life thus far, allowing for something to fall back on when all is lost, and an opportunity to look at the big picture, because in the end, it all works out for the better, no matter what. This episode with Shmuel is a testament to chasing your dreams, and exploring one's interests with full strength! In Illinois, Black residents are eight times more likely to be homeless than white residents. The lack of affordable housing, the racial wealth gap, the legacy of redlining all drive these high rates. This is outlined in a report from the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, commissioned by the Illinois Office to Prevent and End Homelessness. Reset hears more about these structural factors and what can be done to alleviate these disparities from Illinois State Homelessness Chief Christine Haley. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.

On today's show we discuss the gunshot detection system ShotSpotter with Alejandro Ruizesesparza from the Cancel ShotSpotter Coalition and Jonathan Manes, an attorney in the MacArthur Justice Center's Illinois Office. Our discussion focuses on why activists and communities are rising up to confront the Chicago Police Department on their use of ShotSpotter. The scary truth about ShotSpotter is that the technology has never been independently validated so really the only evidence that the technology is reliable is from the company itself and from police departments that use the technology. It is pretty clear that both the company ShotSpotter and the various police departments that use the technology are rewarded for saying it works regardless of whether it does or not. The company gets additional sales of their technology while the police departments get a automated probably cause generator. Whether or not there was an actual shooting is irrelevant to the officers being sent to the scene because they have a system that says there was and that is all the probably cause they need to stop and frisk anyone they want in the vicinity of the alert. The incentives are built in to have both parties lie or completely ignore the validity of the ShotSpotter technology because they both benefit from the system. You also need to remember that the CPD with its $1.7 billion plus budget could not provide any statistics or data to prove the technology helps the police do their job. At the CPD's budget hearing Supt. Brown could only say that ShotSpotter helped them get to scenes quicker and has most certainly saved lives. Great! Show us the data. He had nothing.
WRAM "Community Hour" interview with Jessica Tharp, who discusses her role with the Better Business Bureau's Central Illinois office. (11/10/21)
From the start of her law education, Susan Bandes discovered that emotions and law are connected. She felt anger about the reasoning behind a decision that had been handed down by the courts. It was a case discussed in one of her first law classes. But Susan stayed silent. ‘I learned very quickly that if I said I was angry, I would be labeled as too emotional to be a good lawyer.' On top of that, she was a minority of women in her class - ‘Emotion was going to be connected to my gender, women are just too emotional to be lawyers.' Emotions come in all types. There's anger, disgust, closure, fear, empathy, hate … just to name a few. Susan has spent the last 20 years examining the law and the claim that ‘it's an emotion free zone.' Can we really take our emotions out of decisions that are made? For years Susan had been writing in the predominantly male fields of federal courts and criminal procedure. She was one of only two women on the list of the 20 most cited law professors in criminal law and procedure. But two Supreme Court cases flipped the switch and set her on the path she would follow for the next 20 years and counting: exploring the role of emotion in law. A conversation with Susan and what we probably don't think about Holding back the anger and questions A woman in a field of men The law and emotions Closure Fear A decision but no real data Can it be an emotion free zone Human behavior and all the assumptions A Pioneer Susan is a pioneer in the emerging study of the role of emotion in law. Her legal career began in 1976 at the Illinois Office of the State Appellate Defender. She became staff counsel for the Illinois A.C.L.U. in 1980 where she litigated a broad spectrum of civil rights cases. Susan helped draft and secure passage of the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Susan joined the DePaul faculty in 1984. She was named Distinguished Research Professor in 2003 and Centennial Distinguished Professor in 2012, Susan has authored over 50 articles and is among the most widely cited law professors in the field of criminal law and procedure. Her work appears in the Yale, Stanford, University of Chicago, Michigan and Southern California law reviews.

http://electcervantez.com/ Joe's experiences after the loss of his parents tested him at an early age and taught him to be independent and resourceful. Realizing the importance of an education, and in order to break free from his situation, Joe attended Southern Illinois University where he concentrated in the study of Criminal Justice and History, receiving a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts. The son of a World War II and Korean War veteran, Joe felt compelled to enlist in the United States Marine Corps Reserve during college. He enlisted at the Carbondale, Illinois Office and attended boot camp at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. Shortly after the devastating attacks on September 11, 2001, Joe re-enlisted and volunteered to serve as a Marine Infantryman, deploying in 2003, 2004, and again in 2007 and 2008. He honorably served with America's finest as an Infantry Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, and Platoon Commander, among other billets, in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. Joe has been recognized by his superiors for his outstanding service as a Marine including a report when they reported, ” I have seen this Marine against our enemy and his performance was inspirational.” Among other ribbons, medals and awards, Joe was awarded multiple Navy Achievement Medals and a Combat Action Ribbon. Subsequently, Joe accepted a position as a NATO Weapons Advisor and Trainer, traveling extensively through Afghanistan and working closely with U.S. and Afghan troops as well as many other international military and civilian professionals. In 2010, Joe placed a hold on his career and began his legal education at Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale, Illinois. Joe volunteered as a legal advocate with Domestic Violence Clinic and with the Land of Lincoln in Carbondale, Illinois. After Graduation, Attorney Cervantez was hired by Charles Garnatti, as an Assistant State's Attorney with the Williamson County State's Attorney's Office. He stayed on to work for Williamson County State's Attorney Brandon Zanotti. Later, he was asked to head the juvenile docket for the Saline County State's Attorney's Office. Joe is now a partner at the Law Firm of Tetzlaff, Cervantez & Associates, P.C., a general practice law firm with four attorneys. The group specializes in Criminal Law, DUI, Family, Divorce, and Municipal Law. Joe is a certified and approved Guardian Ad Litem and Mediator in the 1st Circuit and he often does pro bono work for veterans and has been a long standing advocate for Diversion and Veteran Court programs. My time as a juvenile shaped my life in ways that made me think about criminal justice issues since before I can remember. Later, as a prosecutor, and a defense attorney, I realized that center to true criminal justice reform is the office of the State's Attorney. The state's attorney is not just a prosecutor. The State's Attorney is a community leader and a manager, central to criminal justice policy and ultimately responsible for the safety of the community. The system is meant to be fair and just, but often, policies of the past negatively affect the fundamental fairness of our system. We need to change outdated policies of the past, help build a safer community and advocate for victims, families, and children because they deserve a modern, efficient, and fair criminal justice system. I'd like to use my life experience to lead this discussion in our community I can't wait to get to work for the people of Jackson County to increase safety, support victims and their families, advocate for our children, deliver accountability to violent offenders, and ensure that our justice system is fair, efficient, and just for everyone.
