Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the US has been trying to figure out the appropriate level of involvement. Tomahawk Missiles would be quite the game-changer for this cyclical conversation.Join the Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/PeterZeihanFull Newsletter: https://bit.ly/4ol8C2C
Tomahawk Missiles Would Extend Ukraine's Range but Are Not a Wonder Weapon. John Hardie discusses the possibility of supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. Hardie argues that the Tomahawk would extend Ukraine's range beyond existing Western missiles and packs more power than Ukraine's domestically produced drones. It is also noted as being a more capable missile that is harder to shoot down than current Ukrainian long-range systems. Hardie supports enhancing Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities, but cautions that the Tomahawk is not a "wonder weapon" that will turn the tide of the war. Practical and stockpile considerations for the United States, as well as alternative missile options, are also relevant. 1957

Friday Focus provides listeners with a focused, half-hour masterclass on the big issues, events and trends driving the news and current events. The show features Janice Gross Stein, the founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and bestselling author, in conversation with Rudyard Griffiths, Chair and moderator of the Munk Debates. Rudyard and Janice start the show with the big news stories coming out of Gaza this week: the public executions Hamas is conducting in the Gaza strip in order to to terrorize and intimidate civilians, and the Israeli government's growing concern that Hamas is breaking the ceasefire deal by not returning all of the dead hostages as agreed upon. How will rival Gaza clans thwart Hamas's attempt to cling to power? Could Gaza be on the verge of a civil war? How fast can you get a rudimentary police force to make Hamas pull back? And perhaps most importantly, who would want to go in there? Janice is optimistic that this time, at least, the Arab world is taking ownership over this problem in a way they never have before. In the second half of the show Rudyard and Janice turn to an important phone call that took place this week between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin just ahead of Zelensky's visit today to Washington, where the Ukrainian President intends to make the case for long-range Tomahawk missiles to hit targets deep inside Russia. The transfer of these weapons, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned this week, could lead to nuclear war. Meanwhile, Europeans have never been more scared, interpreting Russia's drone excursions into NATO territory as preparation for a larger war with the continent. Are weak European governments using the bogeyman of Russia to rally their public to distract from domestic problems and rising populism? Everybody is rolling the dice here, and when you do that there is always a chance that someone will miscalculate, and everyone will pay the heavy price. PREVIEW: Vladimir Putin Threatens Escalation Over Tomahawk Missiles to Ukraine; Response Likely More Bark Than Bite GUEST NAME: John Hardie (Foundation for Defense of Democracies) 100-WORD SUMMARY: John Batchelor and John Hardie discuss Vladimir Putin's threats of escalation if allies provide Tomahawk missiles and other tools of war to Ukraine. Hardie suggests that Russia has been "more bark than bite" throughout the conflict and is extremely unlikely to resort to tactical nuclear use. Putin's response might be asymmetrical, perhaps strengthening air defense or stepping up "gray zone actions" in Europe, or supporting the Houthis. Direct military retaliation against a NATO member is improbable because Putin recognizes he would lose such a war.

Russia's Multi-Front War: European Drones, Space Threats, and Tomahawk Missiles Guests: John Hardie, Bill Roggio John Hardie discusses Russia's expanding conflict, which includes drones over European airports like Munich and Berlin, viewed by Denmark as Russian "gray zone" activity aimed at testing Western response. NATO has been slow to adopt cost-effective counter-drone measures, unlike Ukraine's use of mobile fire groups. Russia is also engaging in anti-satellite activity, with Russian satellites reportedly stalking UK military satellites in low Earth orbit. The US is reportedly considering supplying longer-range Tomahawk missiles to allies for transfer to Ukraine. These missiles could strike deep into Russian military-industrial sites, which, coupled with economic pressure, might convince Putin to pause the war. 1811 BRUSSELS

The U.S. has launched new airstrikes against Iran-backed targets in Iraq and Syria in retaliation for a drone attack that killed three American soldiers. The strikes come the same day that President Biden attended the dignified transfer of the soldiers killed in the strike in Jordan that the U.S. has attributed to Iranian-backed militant groups. President Biden released a statement, saying in part: "Our response began today. It will continue at times and places of our choosing. The United States does not seek conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world. But let all those who might seek to do us harm know this: if you harm an American, we will respond." Thanks for liking us enough to come back for Round 3. On today's episode, we discuss: Missiles Fired! President Trump orders the launch of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase. The decision was made after the Syrian government used chemical weapons in an attack that killed 80 of their own civilians. Judge Neil Gorsuch has officially been confirmed as the ninth Supreme Court justice this afternoon. The confirmation will finally fill the vacancy left by Antonin Scalia over a year after his death. With Democrats opposing and filibustering the Gorsuch nomination, Senate Republicans made the unprecedented move to “go nuclear”. They voted to change the voting process to need a majority vote, rather than the 60 votes typically needed. We also have a new segment called MICROFESTO. It's like a game show, but with half the fun and none of the stakes. Like always, please SUBSCRIBE, RATE, and REVIEW us.
Another stellar week in politics. Trump uses $60 million worth of Tomahawk Missiles against a Syrian air base, and guess what, the base was up and running again in 24 hours!

US Strikes Syria and Other News There is an ancient Chinese curse that goes like this. "May you live in interesting times". I'll just let you work that out. We have several different news events that have happened in the last 48 hours as we discuss the US Strikes Syria and Other News. The Syrian Air strike by the United States is the biggest news event on the radar. While that is significant, these other two can't be ignored in this context of events. The U.S. hit a Syrian Air Base with Tomahawk Missiles in response to the Syrian Government using sarin gas on civilians in its own country. This gas attack has been well publicized with graphic pictures of the dead, including children. Source: The U.S. Strikes a Syrian Air Base | Stratfor Stockholm Truck Attack This morning in Stockholm Sweden a truck was driven into a busy department store. It is being claimed a terror attack . The impact has killed at least five and injured many more. “Some people felt that this was just a matter of time,” she said. “Paris, Brussels, London and now Stockholm. I just had a feeling something like this would happen.” -Katarina Libert, 32, a freelance journalist We have spoken about the possibility of terror attacks after the London Car Attack. Incidents of terror using vehicles will continue to be used. Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/07/world/europe/stockholm-attack.html Russia has a New Submarine Russia is also in the news announcing their latest submarine. This thing is a monster. They are also informing the world that their global patrols are increasing. Russia has significant interests in Syria. They are a growing power in the global arena to be sure. This new submarine has immense tactical capabilities. Coming full circle (see what I did there?) Russia is now rattling their sword at the US air strike. Very clearly there are lots of behind the scenes politics going on. Source: http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2017/04/06/russia-bolsters-naval-arsenal-unveils-its-most-powerful-nuclear-sub-ever.html What Does All This Have To Do With You Depends on you actually. Either these events are significant, or they aren't. It is my experience that most (not all to be sure) people tend to react one of two ways. They don't care. The events are not in their home town or backyard, therefore - don't care They flip the hell out. Everything turns into a doom and gloom scenario. Government conspiracies have taken over. The boogie man is clearly after them. Right now. While these things are all in some way possibly (maybe) true, there is another option. You can choose to become aware.
