The Product Market Fit Show
Your odds of raising a Series A just dropped from 30% to 15%—here's what to do about it:

New Carta data shows that 30% of seed-stage startups used to raise a Series A within 2 years of their seed. Now, only 15% do. The bar for Series As is as high as it's ever been. And the number of seed extensions that I see is going up as a result. But for founders, this is NOT a bad thing. I remember as a seed-stage founder I was obsessed with raising a Series A. But now I've seen startup after startup that raised $8-12M Series A when they didn't truly have product-market fit. Most of those startups ended up hiring too many people, burning too much money, and not growing any faster. They are now money-losing startups with no growth. The VCs aren't happy, but they're okay. But the founders aren't. They are at the bottom of the stack. They can't sell their business and can't grow it either. They're stuck between a rock and a hard place. The solution? If you're not performing at top quartile levels, if you don't have clear undeniable product-market fit, then raise a smaller round. Seed extensions might not be what you wanted—but in many cases, it's what you need.Send me a message to let me know what you think!

Chris Tolles is the CEO and Co-founder of Yard Stick PBC, which stands for Public Benefits Corporation. Yard Stick is aiming to be the measurement backbone for soil carbon. Their handheld hardware enables onsite measurement of soil carbon in agricultural fields, and their software package provides data and analytics that help stakeholders in a soil carbon project to measure and track progress. As Chris tells it, the Yard Stick co-founders got to know one another in the MCJ member community during the pandemic lockdowns in 2020. MCJ is a proud multi-time investor in Yard Stick. Even so, we still learned a ton from Chris during this conversation. Chris highlighted that while MRV technologies are often associated with carbon credit sales, the voluntary carbon market is just one avenue for soil carbon project development. Another that is seeing strong early traction is insetting, where food and agriculture companies are beginning to measure an attempt to reduce the carbon intensity of their own agricultural supply chains. They aren't selling credits; rather, they're starting to make progress on directly reducing the emissions of how their food is grown, which is great news. Chris charts his background and experience and then explains what soil carbon is and why it matters, helping to put the efforts that Yard Stick is making into the context of the broader global carbon cycle. Episode recorded on Oct 13, 2023 (Published on Dec 7, 2023)In this episode, we cover: [02:38]: Chris's background and pivoting from consumer products to climate[08:43]: Origins of Yard Stick in the MCJ Community[11:59]: How Chris and co-founders came to focus on soil organic carbon[14:43]: Cristine Morgan's research background as Yard Stick CSO[18:50]: Overview of soil organic carbon and key drivers of soil carbon stock losses[27:46]: Issues with how claims have been measured historically[33:39]: Why remote sensing technology is insufficient[35:29]: Yard Stick's technology and approach[42:50]: The company's business model[46:00]: Addressing criticism of soil carbon and other nature-based solutions[51:49]: Soil carbon support in Inflation Reduction Act and future policy[56:00]: Yard Stick's $18 million grant from the USDA[58:19]: Their recent $12M Series A round led by Toyota Ventures[01:00:00]: Reckoning with racial injustice and land theft in agriculture[01:02:04]: Encouraging climate companies to address complex social issuesResources mentioned:Demo Carbon Stock Report“Yard Stick lands 10.6M Series A to measure soil carbon” (TechCrunch) Get connected with MCJ: Jason Jacobs X / LinkedInCody Simms X / LinkedInYin Lu X / LinkedInMCJ Podcast / Collective / YouTube*If you liked this episode, please consider giving us a review! Digital asset management is not a new term, but the number of assets that are being generated by companies is exploding, which in return makes it very challenging to collaborate and keep tabs of everything. Take VentureFizz, we have videos, audio files, images and more spread throughout Google Drive, Dropbox, Canva, multiple hard drives, and probably several other spots that I'm forgetting. Air is taking on this problem head on, as they are building the collaboration platform for your team's visual work. The company just announced a $12M Series A round of funding led by Tiger Global. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * The belief that every company and individual is a media company. * Shane's background growing up in Toledo and his decision to attend Stanford where he met his co-founder, Tyler Strand. * His prior company, Swap Mobile, and his experience as an investor and what these experiences taught him. * All of the details on Air in terms of the founding story to where the company and platform is today. * What it was like fundraising during the pandemic. * Advice for founders on building their initial core team. * And so much more. Welcome to Episode 92 of The VentureFizz Podcast, the flagship podcast from the leading authority for jobs & careers in the tech industry. For this episode of our podcast, I interviewed Noah Isaacs, Co-Founder at Bowery Valuation. Noah is the definition of the words "determination" and "hustle." This mentality stems back to his teenage years, where he had a dream of working for a Major League Baseball team. With this goal in mind, he actually cold called every baseball team and dialed through to each extension hoping to get in touch with the team's GM to land a job. He eventually did connect with the GM from the San Francisco Giants, but obviously, he was too young and inexperienced at the time. He didn't let this discourage him. When he was 20 years old, Noah and his longtime childhood friend and current Co-Founder, John Meadows set out to build the experience required for a back office position in baseball. They took the initiative to create a website where they would report their findings from scouting minor league players up and down the West Coast. This ended up creating the very stroke of luck Noah needed to land his dream job as an intern. He shares more of the details in the podcast, but it is definitely one of those stories that sets the stage and tone for their future success as entrepreneurs. Bowery is bringing the real estate appraisal industry to the modern era with an end-to-end software solution for commercial real estate appraisals. The company has raised a total of $17M in funding, including a $12M Series A round which was announced this past January. In this episode of our podcast, we cover lots of topics, like: -More of the details on Noah and John's friendship and the story on how he became an intern for the Toronto Blue Jays. -How they discovered an industry that was ripe for disruption. -The interesting story of how Bowery Valuation was founded, plus its current state and scale. -Advice for founders raising capital. -Lessons learned from building and scaling the business. -Plus, a lot more.
