Clemente Cohen's finance career began in the early 1990s inside the Munich offices of Silicon Graphics, approximately 6,500 miles from the Silicon Valley company's headquarters and 7,500 miles from his birthplace in Argentina. This transcontinental start marked the beginning of a career defined by global problem solving , adaptability and generous helpings of M&A experience. Cohen, who grew up in Germany after moving from Argentina, problem solving perspective to his role. Joining Silicon Graphics as an accountant, Cohen tells us he was able to quickly demonstrate to others a innate curiosity and willingness to go the extra mile. Frequently, his contributions went beyond traditional accounting, delving into financial analysis and supporting the company's rapid growth. This foundational experience in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment would shape Cohen's understanding of finance operations on a global scale. Over the next decade, Cohen's career with Silicon Graphics expanded across continents. He held roles in Germany, the UK, and eventually became the International CFO, overseeing finance and business operations outside the United States. After a dozen years with Silicon Graphics, Cohen joined the London Office of CA Technologies , where Cohen tell us he was able to play a pivotal role in M&A activities and helped drive the company's transition from hardware to software. After spending much of his career at large, global companies, Cohen made a deliberate decision to pursue CFO opportunities at smaller, private equity-backed firms. This shift allowed him to be more hands-on, driving business transformation and growth in a more direct way. The move was not without hesitation, as smaller companies often come with greater challenges and fewer resources. However, Cohen embraced the opportunity to apply his extensive experience in a more entrepreneurial setting.

In a special Trouble Shooter episode of CFO Thought Leader, we speak with Tal Kirschenbaum, CEO and founder of Ledge. Together, we delve into his career journey and the foresight that led him to identify a significant opportunity in finance automation. Tal's path, starting from his finance education at the University of Chicago and Tel Aviv University, through various roles at Intel Capital, BCG, Facebook, and Milio, provided him with a broad perspective on financial operations and corporate development. At the core of Tal's entrepreneurial vision is a keen awareness of the inefficiencies in traditional finance operations. He identified a common challenge faced by finance teams: the reliance on manual processes and siloed systems, which often lead to increased workloads and errors. This insight spurred the creation of Ledge, a platform designed to automate repetitive tasks and streamline financial data management. Tal's experiences highlighted the critical role of AI in transforming finance functions. He emphasized that AI can address the high volume of unstructured data finance teams deal with daily. For instance, AI-driven solutions can resolve discrepancies in transaction data, such as mismatched names between bank transfers and invoices, significantly reducing manual intervention. Moreover, Tal sees AI as a powerful tool for financial forecasting. By using AI to predict outcomes based on historical data and user inputs, finance teams can move away from time-consuming manual data manipulation and focus on strategic decision-making. This shift not only enhances efficiency but also addresses the acute shortage of skilled accountants by automating routine tasks and allowing finance professionals to engage in more valuable work. In today's challenging economic environment, Tal advises finance leaders to prioritize sustainable and profitable growth. He believes that integrating AI into finance operations is crucial for achieving increased efficiency and supporting complex business operations. As the market demands more from finance teams, leveraging AI can be the key to maintaining competitiveness and ensuring long-term success.

On a recent show, we talked about Successful Exits with the founders of Turbosquid, Levelset, and Lucid. A successful exit is when your business is doing so well that someone buys it off you. In 2021 the founders of Turbosquid, Levelset and Lucid sold their New Orleans companies for $75m, $500m, and $1.1b dollars, respectively. As impressive as that is, it's not the full story about all the successful exits that are happening in the New Orleans tech sector. On this edition of Out to Lunch we take a look at two other companies who have made successful exits, from the buyer's side, as well as the seller's. Let's kick off by catching up with Darryl Glade. Darryl was on Out to Lunch back in 2019. If you want to check out that conversation, search in your podcast app for Out to Lunch - the episode was called "The Camera Doesn't Lie." Darryl's company, IMOTO Photo, specialized in taking photos for real estate listings. The quality of photos in real estate listings can make a huge difference - both in finding the right buyer, and getting the right price for the seller. We're not sure what photos Darryl used to execute his own sale, but in 2021 he sold IMOTO Photo and an allied company, Rocket Photo, for $5m, to a real estate tech company based in Quebec, Canada, called Urban Immersive. Unlike some other exits, Darryl and his whole team have stayed on after the sale. Today, IMOTO Photo is bigger than ever and has added all kinds of tech to the services it provides to home buyers and sellers, including real estate listings in the Metaverse. Since 2015 we've been following the fortunes of a local education technology company called Whetstone. Whetstone is a software platform that improves classroom teaching. It streamlines and standardizes teacher observation and instruction. You only have to meet Whetstone CEO Libby Fischer once to know she's the kind of person who's going somewhere. And, in fact, today she has gone somewhere - she's gone on her honeymoon. But before she went there, Libby led Whetstone to a successful exit.  In 2021, Whetstone was bought by another Ed-Tech company, based in Lafayette Louisiana, called SchoolMint. Like Darryl's company, everybody who was at Whetstone has stayed on at SchoolMint. Libby has become SchoolMint's Chief Operating Officer, and Whetstone's Director of Operations, Zach Hollwedel, has become SchoolMint's Vice President of Finance Operations. When we talk about local startups being bought by bigger companies, one of the frequent criticisms is that these sales siphon future earnings away from New Orleans and into the coffers of out-of-town owners.  That has not happened with the purchase of either IMOTO Photo or Whetstone. To the contrary, it looks like these successful exits are more success than exit. Everybody is still at both of these companies, and rather than siphoning off anything, these companies are both growing, creating more wealth for New Orleans. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom. At itsneworleans.com you can find photos from this show by Jill Lafleur. Timestamps: [02:05] Greg, can you talk us through your journey?  Currently, I co-head the climate investment team at Fifth Wall.  I set up and founded the climate investing team for BMW.  Prior to BMW, I was an Elon Musk world for a number of years. I was head of finance and operations at two of his companies.  I started my investing career at a fund called Battery Ventures. [06:10] John, can you talk us through your journey?  I didn't set out to be a climate tech investor. I have a law degree from Stanford.  I started several companies that were venture-backed, the first was Coldwatt.  I started my first asset management company as an investor in India and set up a permanent capital vehicle for investing.  I partnered with Stephen M. Ross, Jeff Blau and Harvey Spievak and we turned around Citi Bike.   Finally, I set up Footprint Coalition with Robert Downey Jr.  [14:20] Greg, can you talk us through impact investing and how it's going affect our built environment?  Impact investing has historically gotten little bit of a negative connotation to it because in the capital markets people have always said there's real investing and then there is impact investing. A lot of these technologies that people used to think were expensive are now incredibly cheap. [16:50] John, in your 20 years, what major changes have you seen?  We've had a wash out of clean tech, 1.0 companies that weren't sustainable without subsidy. Technology is accelerating, the world looks nothing today, like it did 15 years ago. The talent that has followed the capital that is flooding into this market is truly amazing. [22:30] With technologies such as Carbon Cure and cross-laminated timber, it is expensive for buildings to put into practice and will the cost of these building be higher?  This technology is safer because these things are lighter and they're easier to transport. You need smaller foundations for the buildings and they naturally are able to band with the wind and high-rise buildings.  It's cheaper, it's better for the planets, your buildings go up faster and they weigh less.  We've got to climb up a little bit of a mountain when it comes to training engineers and getting permitting done. [24:50] John, you have experience in alternative proteins, can you expand on that and give an example of a technology in that space?  People are really looking and examining the food supply and thinking about how we can scale in a way that's compatible with the planet. We look for investments in areas where through alternative methods of production, we can create more denser sources of the very things that we need to eat and that are healthier and just better alternatives. Zero Acre Farms ferment in this case, vegetable oil and if you're able to do that you have a much more energy dense way of producing that food without having to go and cut palm forest.  [28:00] Is there something our audience could be looking in to play their part in the future of the built environment?  The simplest thing you can do, inside buildings is turning your thermostat down. What we need is to allow people to voice their opinions and give CEOs and the people who make policy decisions, the power and the space to change how they do business. [30:55] The ‘LMRE' part, Louisa asks the guests to talk about;  Lessons learned in your career Greg:  Catch me if you Can and Inventing Anna, these people were to do outstanding things because they had the moxie and the guts to try.  Greg: You fail at a 100% of the things, you don't try. John:  Never underestimate the power of human incentives. Mention a person, product or service Greg: Sealed.com John: My wife Rewarding parts of working in the space: Greg: When you work on anything in climate tech it is quite rewarding inherently because the, technologies you're working on are here to try and save the world. John: I love the community feedback.    What are you most Excited about for the future of the space?: John: I drove a 1968 Volkswagen bus and this one was kitted with a salvaged Tesla engine. The EMEA Recruitment podcast was proud to welcome Bas Walraven, the Director Accounting, Risk and Compliance at bol.com.  “If you want to get somewhere, it takes time, it takes effort, and in the end, when you reach the finish line, it's really rewarding.” Bas explains to Paul Toms why he now favours the hybrid working model and how he feels it helps his team.  Looking back at the beginning of his career, Bas recalls moving to Australia with PwC with his then-girlfriend (now wife). Although it was a “tough and intense” experience, the benefits of pushing himself out of his comfort zone outweighed the challenges.  With the role of Finance changing dramatically over the past 20 years, Bas looks at the expertise he needs to add to his team; they're not skillsets that were really on the radar a decade ago.  Obtaining his RA qualification, however, was a “true investment” in Bas' career, which he believes has built a solid foundation for him as a Finance professional. However, he made a purposeful decision to move into transaction services, as it's “more exciting to look forward”.  At Booking.com, Bas learned how to scale a Finance Operations department. He had a clear vision on how people, process and technology can link together. It was that insight that brought him to bol.com, where vision was needed.  In his current role at bol.com, Bas enjoys a broad scope of responsibilities in a dynamic environment. Although he has a clear focus on his goals, Bas understands that he needs a great team to deliver on these aims. After building teams for around eight years, Bas offers his one piece of critical advice on hiring the best talent. Nevertheless, he has experienced the pitfalls of making the wrong hire. He focuses on creating an environment and team that top talent can be successful in, so that candidates really want to work with the department. As a CEO, your focus is mostly on product-market fit, sales and operations (or all of the above). Odds are, you yourself never worked in HR and hardly thought about it, maybe even ignored it. At least until you started growing to 15, 30, 50 employees and past $5M ARR and needed to bring on more talent, then to keep it and develop it. Then things got complicated… For many fast-growth companies, HR has become a four-letter word, a complex and expensive maze of systems, compliance, laws and regulations, plus an expensive arms race of benefits and perks. It really needn't be. That's why we created HR, Talent & Systems. When companies grow past 50 employees, they generally need a more thoughtful, comprehensive approach to hiring, benefits and payroll, talent development and systems. It's inevitable, if the CEO wants to maintain a core team and grow quickly and scale. Eventually, they need to hire their first HR executive to create and implement strategy, not just systems. We build the bridge to that first CHRO / CPO hire and sometimes fill that role ourselves as the startup raises a B round and scales quickly. Founders often think they can get by on a “more bodies in seats” approach, until people feel alienated and un-cared for and leave for greener pastures. Having seen this sad inflection point over and over as an Interim Chief HR / Chief People Officer and previously, as an employee in Product and Finance/Operations, it pains me to see great companies under-utilize, under-develop and lose talent, the founders unable to get out of their own way. For the last 7 years, we have helped companies of all sizes, industries and growth stages to stand up an HR department from scratch, coach executives to become leaders and employees to thrive in their roles, as well as design and implement the systems (ATS, HRIS, Benefits, Payroll, Project Management, etc.) they need to sustain and increase growth. Partnering with top vendors in each category, we have saved our clients multiple $100Ks on benefits, talent acquisition and retention costs and employer branding, helping our clients win Inc. 5000, Best Company To Work For and individual industry awards. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

And ultimately, how is that translating into the pricing and that story that you're trying to communicate to your customers through your sales team.”  - Chris Barth   Increase Your Pricing Knowledge: Become a Champions of Value INSIDER! It's really trying to match what are the needs of the customers with the solution that you're offering and what is the appropriate price?” - Chris Barth “We didn't have this grand network; we didn't have assets. And here, we had to sell value and convince retailers to pay for our solution. And then, in turn, we had to coach our customers on how to position it with their consumers.” - Chris Barth “All the things that go into what you're trying to do as a business have got to translate into your positioning in the market and what you're trying to do. So, when I say that, it’s just understanding your business strategy.” - Chris Barth “When you're trying to set value, then, put yourself in the customer's shoes. Would you buy this product? Would you pay for the solution? What need or problem are you trying to solve in the market? And what is it worth?” - Chris Barth “What you want are sales folks, really being able to articulate the value, matching that value to a customer's needs and being able to capture the highest possible price that can tie to the value and optimizing your profit as a company.”  - Chris Barth   Resources / People Mentioned: Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. During his time at Zettaset, the company has successfully grown its software-defined encryption portfolio to provide a comprehensive data protection solution across all physical, virtual, and cloud environments.
