Batteries were electrochemistry's breakout hit. For years it was a field that kept a low profile, outshined by flashier cousins like biotech and computer science. That is until lithium-ion batteries became big business, showing that studying the relationship between chemicals and energy could unlock technical pathways that other disciplines could not. Now the field is making breakthroughs in critical areas like cement, metallurgy, and new battery chemistries. So what else can electrochemistry do? Which problems is it especially good at solving? In this episode, Shayle talks to Dr. Yet-Ming Chiang, a professor of materials science and engineering at MIT. He's also the co-founder of at least six electrochemistry companies, including Form Energy and Sublime Systems, which are both portfolio companies of Energy Impact Partners where Shayle is an investor. They cover topics like: Promising applications like mining, SAFs, and other industrial processes that require a high concentration of energy The strengths of electrochemistry and where it fits best in larger system The weak spots of electrochemistry, like solid-solid transformations and the limitation to 2-dimensional surfaces How electrochemical processes work with intermittent power and the role of embedded chemical storage AI's potential to shape the field — and its limits Recommended resources Catalyst: What do you do with a 100-hour battery? Though only two hours from the Washington beltway, the Canaan Valley receives more snow than the snowiest reporting station in Maine and a shorter growing season than Fairbanks, Alaska. Scientists have determined that elevation, position, and orientation are all contributing elements that notably support the valley's three ski areas. More specifically, the cold temperatures, increased precipitation, and the valley's similarity to a “huge bathtub” conspire to create its remarkably wintry conditions. First-of-a-kind projects need infrastructure investment, the kind of money that costs less than venture capital and usually comes in the form of deals worth tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. But infrastructure investors are notoriously conservative and convincing them to bite can be challenging. So what do infrastructure investors really want? In this episode, Shayle talks to Mario Fernandez, head of Breakthrough Energy's FOAK finance program. It has worked with companies like Rondo, Form Energy, and Lanzajet to overcome challenges on the path to infrastructure investment. Coincidentally, the program is also called Catalyst (no relation to our show). Mario and Shayle talk about the journey from lab-proven technology to a fully de-risked infrastructure investment, covering topics like: Why investors want to see a path to multiple, repeatable projects Mario's prescription for a scale-up path: pilot, demo, and FOAK project The difficulty of following that path on a limited financial runway The commercial construct and the tension between negotiating a flexible offtake and securing a customer Developing the right capital stack and accurately estimating capital needs Recommended resources The Green Blueprint: Rondo Energy's complicated path to building heat batteries CTVC: Venture to Project Finance Duolingo Catalyst: Financing first-of-a-kind climate assets Catalyst is brought to you by EnergyHub. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. Weirton's Theo Yianni's serves up bangin' good Greek food…a new initiative aims to attract economic investment to historic buildings in rural communities…and Wheeling's Streetscape beautifies the city and creates a foundation for future investments…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV LIVING – Shawn Mihellis may tell you it was never his plan to own a popular Greek restaurant in Weirton, but the winding road that led him there seems to suggest otherwise. One: His parents came to America by boat, making Mihellis the first in his family to be born in this country. Two: They eventually migrated to Weirton, a town in the Northern Panhandle with a large Greek population. Three: Back in his younger days, he ran an after-hours bar in his basement where he'd make and serve his own Greek gyros. He went to college to pursue a teaching degree, but the restaurant business called him back. He went on to open Theo Yianni's, a little Greek restaurant in the middle of town, 13 years ago—and that small spot quickly became a hit among the locals. Read more: https://wvliving.com/bangin-good-food/ #2 – From WV EXPLORER – An initiative designed to attract economic investment to historic buildings and districts in rural communities is being introduced to Congress by senators Mark Warner of Virginia and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia. The Rural Historic Tax Credit Improvement Act will significantly reduce financial burdens for rural homeowners and developers in historic districts and where buildings are otherwise listed on the national register. Capito said the act will help rural communities that otherwise must compete with high-traffic development areas. As early as the 1940s, many towns across America began losing commerce to larger cities along major transportation routes. This project, scheduled to be completed by summer 2025, will beautify downtown Wheeling by adding decorative traffic signals, plants and trees as well as brickwork along Main and Market streets and between 10th and 16th streets. ADA-compliant curb cuts and widened sidewalks are also part of the project. Josh Jefferson, president and CEO of the Regional Economic Development Partnership, says the project has created a foundation for future investment and supports the city's existing business community. In recent years, Wheeling and its surrounding cities have seen new businesses arise, such as Form Energy, Newbridge Academy for Kids, Waterfront Hall and Bridge Tavern & Grill. Over the last five decades, as the American steel industry declined, the town lost thousands of jobs. But in July, a new factory -- Form Energy -- opened on the same site and started to bring hundreds of jobs back. Instead of turning iron into steel, it uses the metal to make a new type of battery. This new battery is designed to store energy for around for days--something the standard lithium-ion batteries can't do economically. The project has helped begin to transform the town of Weirton, which spent more than a century centered on the steel works. Form Energy's factory has more than 300 employees now, and plans to have at least 750 by 2028. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024. Form Energy receives $405 million to speed up manufacturing at its Weirton factory…Ball Toyota's owner is honored with the Distinguished West Virginian award for his company's contribution to West Virginia schools…and discover the autumn beauty of Preston County…on today's daily304. #1 – From WCHS-TV – Form Energy, a company that is beginning to produce a longer-lasting alternative to lithium batteries, hit a milestone this month with an announcement of $405 million in funding. The money will allow Form to speed up manufacturing at its first factory in Weirton, West Virginia, and continue research and development, officials say. Manufacturing long-duration energy storage at a commercial scale is seen as essential for lowering carbon emissions that are causing climate change, because it makes clean energy available when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing. Investment company T. Rowe Price led the funding. GE Vernova, a spin-off of General Electric's energy businesses, and several venture capital firms were also involved. Now, if you've never been to a Waffle House in the South, it is delicious for breakfast, or pretty much any time. It's open 24 hours a day, Joel. You can always go in and get some coffee and some eggs and some waffles. Joel Saxum: The best time for a Waffle House is 2 a. m., because it is Allen Hall: But the weather forecasters at the Waffle House appear to have an inside knowledge of where these storms are going because everybody's paying attention to if the Waffle House is closed, that means get out of town, or if it's open, then maybe it's not going to be so bad. So instead of listening to the National Weather Service or your local weather agency, weather person were relying on the Waffle House to determine the fate of hurricanes now. Joel Saxum: Allen, it's a little why I made a reaction when you did this is I actually have a LinkedIn post that I put together about the hashtag WH index the Waffle House index that is, was coined by a FEMA director back in 2004. And what it was is he was down in Florida surveying and I can't remember what hurricane that was, but surveying a hurricane damage and the only place he could find that was open was Waffle House. So he, then he separated into three things. It's green for Waffle House is all a go, yellow for Waffle House has a limited menu, and red for Waffle House is shut down. And if all the Waffle Houses look red around you, you better evacuate. Allen Hall: It's a good rule of thumb. And I know people in Western North Carolina. Eastern Tennessee and now sort of central Florida are really going to have a bad go of it. And yeah, serious stuff, everybody pay attention, keep your head down, get out of the bad weather. Welcome to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast. I'm your host, Allen Hall, and I'll be joined by my Uptime co hosts after these news headlines. In a major development for European offshore wind, Total Energies has agreed to acquire a 50 percent stake in two large scale offshore wind projects from RWE in Germany. The combined capacity of these projects is a staggering 4 gigawatts. Located northwest of the German island of Borkum, investment decisions are expected by 2027 and 2028, with full commissioning planned for 2031 and 32. The partnership not only strengthens TotalEnergy's presence in the German electricity market, but also significantly contributes to the country's efforts to decarbonize its energy sector. Across the Atlantic, Canada has passed groundbreaking legislation opening up its east coast to offshore wind investments. For Bill C 49 creates a framework for developing offshore wind energy in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. The bill amends the Accords Act, allowing federal and provincial governments to jointly manage offshore wind resources. As a result, regulatory bodies have been renamed to reflect their expanded role.

FuturEnergy Ireland has submitted a planning application for its first battery storage project, Ballynahone Energy Storage, to Donegal County Council. The proposed Ballynahone Energy Storage project, the first of its kind in Europe, is designed to use iron-air battery technology capable of discharging energy at its full power output for up to 100 hours when fully charged. This first small 10MW project will be capable of storing 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of energy, which is more than half the energy capacity of Turlough Hill, while future projects in development will be capable of storing up to 8GWh. This new form of multi-day storage is made from some of the safest, cheapest and most abundant materials on the planet: low-cost iron, water and air. The principle of operation is reversible rusting: while the battery is discharging, it breathes in oxygen from the air and converts iron metal to rust; while the battery is charging, the application of an electrical current converts the rust back to iron, and the system breathes out oxygen. This breakthrough technology has the potential to absorb enormous amounts of surplus Irish renewable energy during times of high output and provide the renewable power back into the Irish grid system when it is needed most: for example, during extended periods of extreme weather, grid outages or low renewable generation. The battery will also simultaneously relieve grid congestion issues faced by wind and solar projects, reducing the need for new overhead power lines. This battery technology can provide reliability and resiliency to the country's grid system while delivering energy at a low cost. Paul Blount, Portfolio Director at FuturEnergy Ireland, says: "Ireland's power sector decarbonisation targets are among the most ambitious of any country globally. If we are to realise these ambitions, it is not enough to simply keep building more wind and solar projects. We need new technologies with the ability to time-shift very large energy volumes at low cost if we are to fully decarbonise our power system in a manner that is affordable for consumers. "Iron-air technology was selected by FuturEnergy Ireland following a robust procurement process. Based on the analysis completed by our team, we believe this technology has the potential to be a game-changer for the Irish power system. Form Energy, the US company behind this pioneering iron-air technology, is making a big impact in other energy markets. It will shortly commission a high-volume manufacturing facility in West Virginia and recently received funding of $147 million from the US Department of Energy towards an 85MW, 8.5GWh battery storage project in Lincoln, Maine, which will be the largest battery by energy capacity in the world when delivered." Once validated, the planning application will be available to view online at www.ballynahoneenergystorage.ie and at www.donegalcoco.ie. For more project information, please visit www.ballynahoneenergystorage.ie.

As 2023 comes to a close, the Energy Gang reflects on the events and trends of 2023 that provided grounds for optimism about the transition to a lower-carbon world. On this week's show, Ed Crooks is joined by Melissa Lott and Amy Myers-Jaffe as they share their reasons to be cheerful this holiday season. Ed chooses the precipitous drop in the cost of solar modules, making solar power ever more competitive against fossil fuels, and driving the adoption of solar energy on a global scale. Amy's choice is the continued growth of EV sales. Despite all the negative commentary about electric vehicles in recent months, and some genuine setbacks for the industry, the long-term outlook still looks bright. Finally, Melissa chooses another important development in 2023: the start of construction for Form Energy's new factory in West Virginia to make batteries for long-duration energy storage. The batteries use iron-air technology, an example of several advances in battery chemistry that are offering solutions to the problems associated with lithium ion storage. We wrap the show with the gang trying a not-so-secret Secret Santa, exchanging gifts for the festive season. We hope the show will lift your spirits and put you in the frame of mind to enjoy the holidays. Thanks to everyone who listened during the year. We look forward to seeing you again in 2024. It's time to get specific. In the power industry “long-duration energy storage” could mean anything from 4 to 10 to 100 hours of energy. But Form Energy's Mateo Jaramillo argues that batteries in the ballpark of 100 hours hit a sweet spot, and that sweet spot deserves its own term: multi-day storage. In the 15 minute to 12 hour range, lithium-ion batteries shine, effectively displacing natural gas peaker plants that run less than 5% of the year. But they don't displace higher-capacity generation. Nor do they meet the needs of the grid during significant weather events, like heat domes, Nor'easters and freak Texas winter storms that can last upwards of 75 hours. And for that, Mateo says we need multi-day storage. Form Energy's iron-air batteries made headlines back in 2021 for promising to deliver tens of hours of storage at a low cost per kilowatt hour. (Energy Impact Partners, where Shayle is a partner, invests in Form Energy.) So what role could multi-day storage play on the grid? In this episode, Shayle talks to Mateo about real-world examples from Form's experience with utilities like Xcel and Georgia Power. They also cover topics like: The strengths and limitations of lithium-ion batteries on the grid today, and why Mateo thinks lithium-ion is here to stay. The competitive landscape for mulit-day storage, including iron-air, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, and transmission. What role multi-day storage plays for utilities beyond balancing renewables, such as meeting load growth and resilience goals. Plus: Shayle's idea for bitcoin mining on a barge. Known widely as the “Vagabond Chef” and frequently seen on a motorcycle as he travels the state in search of native-food experiences, Matt Welsch has been enlisted to re-imagine the menus at West Virginia parks. Welsch's passion for culinary artistry and commitment to West Virginia's rich flavors have made him a prominent figure in the industry. Born and raised in Marshall County, he developed wanderlust early, leading him to travel globally. In 2014, he returned to his native West Virginia to found the Vagabond Kitchen, his Wheeling-based restaurant. “Chef Matt's unparalleled talent and engaging personality align perfectly with our vision to elevate the dining experiences in our state parks," Deputy-Chief of Parks Paul Redford.said. “I believe his contributions will undoubtedly add an extra sparkle to our restaurants.” Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2023/08/30/west-virginia-state-park-restaurants-matt-welsch-vagabond-chef/ #2 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – With blade-like Tuscarora sandstone cliffs jutting 900 feet into the Pendleton County sky, the Monongahela National Forest's Seneca Rocks has long prompted visitors to look up while spending time at the iconic West Virginia landmark. But this summer, the U.S. Forest Service has given visitors a good reason to look down — and become fully immersed in the experience. Seneca Rocks Discovery Center has been hosting free snorkeling sessions in the North Fork of the Potomac River's South Branch, which flows past the base of the site's namesake. The program is designed to help participants get a more in-depth understanding of the importance of clean water and healthy streams as they get close-up views of fish, crawfish, and other forms of aquatic life. Mary Ann Nash and her sister Janet Donnelly said they wanted to try it out after having been snorkeling on their Alaskan cruise. “We saw more fish here and we loved seeing how the rock formation looked underwater,” Nash said. It starts — as all pepperoni rolls do — with the dough. But not just any dough. That's one of the secrets of Kanawha schools' pepperoni rolls. They are made using the same recipe as the delicious, soft and sweet hot rolls that accompany every school Thanksgiving dinner and Salisbury steak. Cooks will tell you — this is one of the most time consuming lunches to prepare. A lot of schools shift pepperoni roll day to the end of the week so they can work on the rolls a few days in advance. But there is a good reason to go to all this trouble. These pepperoni rolls are beloved by generations of school kids. “On pepperoni roll days, the teachers would let you out five or ten minutes early so you could get to the cafeteria, because there was always such a long line,” said Whitney Humphrey, who graduated from Riverside High School in 2007. “Because even kids who typically didn't eat school lunch would eat lunch on pepperoni roll day.” Read more: https://wvpublic.org/where-we-learned-about-pepperoni-rolls-uncovering-the-story-of-the-kanawha-county-schools-pepperoni-roll/ Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. The former Weirton Steel site will manufacture batteries, plus bring greater economic development and infrastructure to the area. Form Energy President and COO Ted Wiley says construction is right on target. To add to the good news, they're projecting more jobs than they thought. “Our intention is to bring over 750 jobs to the area in this first factory, and there's opportunity to expand beyond that if things go well,” Wiley said. State Senator Ryan Weld says there's been a lot of buzz from the community as the factory takes its form. He adds every community needs an anchor, something he believes Form could serve as. “Right now, there's about 1,200 acres here at the Weirton Steel Site. Form Energy is taking 55, so there's still so much room for development downtown,” he said. Battery storage deployment is surging to fill the gaps left by intermittent renewable energy resources. And, sometimes, those gaps extend days beyond what lithium-ion can handle. For the past six years, Form Energy has positioned itself as the company to solve for the multi-day challenge. What started with splashy renderings and nearly $1 billion in fundraising announcements has evolved into real contracts with utilities like Xcel and Southern Company, and a commercial-scale iron-air battery plant under construction in West Virginia.Episode 54 of the Factor This! podcast features Form Energy CEO Mateo Jaramillo, a former Tesla executive pushing for deep decarbonization on the grid.Jaramillo breaks down the technology behind Form Energy's 100-hour battery, how the company was able to convince risk-averse utilities to buy in, and the challenges still ahead for multi-day energy storage. That's all next on Factor This! The Factor This! podcast is growing! We're adding a weekly climate and clean energy news roundup episode to the feed, co-hosted by John Engel and cleantech PR veteran Mike Casey. Beginning July 21, "This Week in Cleantech" will give you all of the top stories in 15 minutes or less, and feature a leading journalist or market analyst to share the juice behind the headlines. Mateo Jaramillo is the co-founder and CEO of the long-duration storage company Form Energy. Mateo has spent the last two decades building battery storage companies, with home base being California. But he just moved from Silicon Valley to the Rust Belt, where Form is scaling production of its iron-air batteries at an old steel mill in West Virginia. The location sits at the intersection of major highways, rail lines, and waterways. And Form's batteries sit at the intersection of the old energy economy and the new energy economy. “We are making a type of battery which is based on iron and air. It means that we're moving a lot of iron in and very heavy things out. And so you think about sort of the core infrastructure that's needed to do that – it maps very nicely over the steel infrastructure of the country.” America is working to build back its industrial capacity with clean energy. Armed with lessons from the past and a lot more government support, companies are planning $70 billion in new factories for electric cars, solar and wind components, and batteries – including very large batteries like the ones that Form is making. This week: we talked with Mateo Jaramillo about Form Energy's transition from an R&D and engineering company to a high-volume manufacturer. Is it a sign of what's to come for the US industrial base? Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, Feb. 25 Wheeling mulls installation of solar panels atop Stone Center…WV's new Commerce Secretary James Bailey outlines his goals…and WV stands to make big gains from a new battery making facility…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE INTELLIGENCER – A project to invest nearly a quarter million dollars into solar panels atop the Stone Center in downtown Wheeling is driven not only by the benefits of renewable energy, but also by an ongoing effort to propel economic development in the heart of the city. Members of Wheeling City Council are expected to hear a second reading before taking a final vote on an ordinance to spend $240,255 with RED (Regional Economic Development Partnership) for the project. The Williams Lea Group leases a number of floors at the Stone Center owned by RED. Local officials have been eyeing incentives to not only keep them at the site but also to lay the groundwork that could encourage them to further expand there. “One of the things they've expressed interest in is green power,” said Craig O'Leary, program director at RED. “And so we have worked with Solar Holler to try to find the best way to satisfy their interests and to try to secure a long-term lease in downtown. Between us and the city it's very important.” Read more: https://www.theintelligencer.net/news/top-headlines/2023/02/green-energy-eyed-as-fuel-for-economic-engine-at-stone-center-in-wheeling/ #2 – From WV News – West Virginia Commerce Secretary James Bailey was tapped to lead the state's most diverse department at the beginning of December. A veteran civil servant with experience serving several of the agencies within the Department of Commerce, Bailey was appointed by Gov. Jim Justice following the retirement of former Secretary Ed Gaunch. Bailey said one of his goals is to address staffing shortages within several agencies under Commerce. “We need to be more flexible in the qualifications that we're seeking in folks, and we need to be competitive in both our pay and benefit structure,” he said. The Commerce Department's annual budget proposal includes a $66.5 million funding increase for the state parks system requested by Justice. While he said he couldn't reveal many details yet, a portion of that funding will be used to create two new state parks, Bailey said. The long duration energy storage could provide vital backup power for hospitals and offices -- especially in rural and remote areas like those throughout West Virginia. In an agreement between the Somerville, Massachusetts-based company and the state Department of Economic Development signed last month, Form Energy and its multiday battery would “reform the global electricity system to reliably run on 100% low-cost renewable energy, every day of the year.” The state agreed to provide Form Energy $290 million and retain ownership of the 55-acre property until the company employs 750 full-time workers. The pact requires the company to meet that employment threshold by the end of 2028. The $760 million initial phase on the site of the old Weirton steel mill in Hancock County is expected to produce 750 well-paying jobs. The iron-air battery manufacturing plant is financed by millions of dollars of private investments, but there are also millions of public dollars going toward the project. The West Virginia Economic Development Authority voted to allocate $75 million toward the purchase of land and the construction of buildings in Weirton. Another $215 million in allocations by the Legislature are also anticipated for the project. The deal means West Virginia will own the building and land, and Form Energy will lease it back. The property would transfer to Form no sooner than five years and only if the company employs 750 workers. The deal calls for workers making at least $63,000 a year in average salary. Form Energy expects to start construction of its Weirton factory in 2023 and begin manufacturing iron-air battery systems in 2024 for broad commercialization. In this episode, I speak with my former co-worker, Jessica, about her path to becoming a Project Manager at an energy storage start up. In college, Jessica majored in computer science and minored in ethics and philosophy. Like me, she worked as an analyst at a boutique financial litigation firm after college, but after two years decided that it was time to move on. In deciding what she wanted to do next, Jessica looked to find a job where she felt more mission-aligned and where she could achieve better work-life balance. Now at Form Energy, she focuses on commercial strategy, business development and customer acquisition. Best for: people looking to pivot after their first job out of college; working at a start up in a non-technical role; learning more about clean energy jobs Contents: 1:00 - Introduction 5:04 - Goals for her first job out of college 9:30 - Pros and cons of working as an analyst at a boutique financial litigation firm 15:50 - Pivoting after her first job and the job search 24:07 - Day-to-day as a project manager at an energy storage start up 29:19 - Pros and cons of working as a project manager at an energy storage start up 33:50 - Lessons learned --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sara-isabel-seymour/support

Audio Sources Full Committee Hearing On Opportunities and Challenges in Deploying Innovative Battery and Non-Battery Technologies for Energy Storage September 22, 2022 Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources Witnesses: Tim Hemstreet, Managing Director for Renewable Energy Development, PacifiCorp Spencer Nelson, Managing Director, Research and New Initiatives, ClearPath Ted Wiley, President and Chief Operating Officer, Form Energy 19:19 Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV): When it comes to storage, there has rightly been a focus on the supply chain, particularly for lithium ion batteries that power electric vehicles and phones in our pockets and many other modern technologies. While we have benefited from the use of this important battery chemistry, the fact that China is responsible for 75% of global lithium ion battery production, including 60% of the world's cathode production and 80% of the world's anode production, should give everyone pause. That is why I was proud to champion Inflation Reduction Act which incentivized the onshoring of the entire battery supply chain, from the production and processing of raw materials, to the battery pack assembly and everything in between. Full Committee Hearing On Domestic Critical Mineral Supply Chains March 31, 2022 Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources Witnesses: Dr. Steve Fortier, Director, USGS National Minerals Information Center, U.S. Department of the Interior Scott Melbye, President, Uranium Producers of America Julie Padilla, Chief Regulatory Officer, Twin Metals Minnesota Abigail Wulf, Vice President, Critical Minerals Strategy and Director of the Center for Critical Minerals Strategy, Securing America's Future Energy Dr. Paul Ziemkiewicz, Director, West Virginia Water Research Institute, West Virginia University 24:14 Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV): It makes no sense to remain beholden to bad actors when we have abundant resources in manufacturing know-how here in the United States. And make no mistake, we are beholden, particularly when it comes to many of the minerals that go into clean energy technologies. That is why I've sounded the alarm about going down the path of EVs alone and advocated for equal treatment for hydrogen 45:08 Abigail Wulf: As things stand, without some significant course corrections on America's critical minerals enterprise, the leading automobile power won't be the United States. It will be China. Not because of superior design or technology, but because of their massive head start and established market power, if not utter dominance, in all aspects of the supply chain that powers these [electric] vehicles. But simply mining alone does not begin to address the fundamentals of America's mineral supply chain challenge. Where we are most lacking and where China is most dominant is in that crucial but largely hidden processing phase and midstream component production. We simply can't dig up a rock and stick it in a Tesla. You have to crush it, smelt it, and refine it into precursor material that has been sold to somebody else to turn it into battery guts, namely cathodes, anodes and electrolytes. Today, the United States has less than 4% of all minerals processing capacity and makes 0% of the world's cathodes and anodes. By contrast, China is the world's largest processor of copper, nickel, cobalt, lithium and rare earth elements, and they control 60% of anode production and 40% of global cathode production. Consider that in 2019, about 70% of the world's cobalt supply was mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but more than 70% of that cobalt was refined in or controlled by China. Full Committee Hearing On Clean Hydrogen February 2, 2022 Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources Witnesses Dr. Sunita Satyapal, Director, Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, Hydrogen Program Coordinator, U.S. Department of Energy Dr. Glen Richard Murrell, Executive Director, Wyoming Energy Authority Jonathan Lewis, Senior Counsel and Director of Transportation Decarbonization, Clean Air Task Force Michael J. Graff, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, American Air Liquide Holdings, Inc. Brian Hlavinka, Vice President, New Energy Ventures, Corporate Strategic Development, Williams 21:07 Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV): However, we have some challenges to tackle in order to build a clean hydrogen economy. Producing hydrogen without emissions is two to six times the cost of current production methods. Also, retrofitting end-use applications to use hydrogen as a feedstock, from chemical plants to cars and trucks, will take huge investments from both public and private sectors. This is the demand that we need to develop hydrogen markets that can sustain themselves. The other big challenge is the safe and efficient transport and storage of large volumes of hydrogen, given its physical properties. There's a lot of promising work being done in this space and will allow us to leverage our vast natural gas pipeline network to transport hydrogen to market. 22:00 Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV): That is why I made research, development, and demonstration of these technologies a central part of the Energy Infrastructure Act, which this committee reported with bipartisan support last year, and which was subsequently included in the recently enacted Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. In that bill, we fund $9.5 billion in research, development and demonstration of clean hydrogen, and we tasked the Department of Energy to develop a national strategy and a roadmap to get us to a clean hydrogen economy. 27:25 Sen. James Lankford (R-OK): I'm concerned that the conversation around green versus blue hydrogen will pit technologies against each other rather than working together to establish a robust hydrogen marketplace. The simple truth right now is that 95% of hydrogen produced in the United States is made from natural gas. 1:42:00 Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK): Can you share what the administration's policy is with regards to converting natural gas to hydrogen? We recognize that there are some within the [Biden] administration, certainly some groups that may have influence on the administration, who are very firm about not using fuel sources like natural gas. So the question is, is there a role for conversion to play? And what might we anticipate with regards to support and funding that might come with it? Dr. Sunita Satyapal: Thank you again for the question. And as mentioned, with hydrogen shot, we're really looking at all of the pathways. It's really about clean hydrogen. So whether it's natural gas, carbon feedstocks, nuclear renewables, you know, any pathway to get to the low carbon intensity, we're really pivoting away from the colors. There's a lot of complexity: green, blue, purple, turquoise….Pyrolysis is another approach. In fact, our loan program office just announced financing of $1 billion solid carbon, which is another value added product, no need for the CCS portion. So definitely an all-of-the-above strategy needed to meet all of our goals. Full Committee Hearing to Examine Development and Deployment of Large-Scale Carbon Dioxide Management Technologies July 28, 2020 Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources Witnesses: Steven Winberg, (Former) Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy at the US Department of Energy Shannon Angielski, Executive Director of the Carbon Utilization Research Council Dr. Julio Friedmann, Center on Global Energy Policy, Columbia University 25:06 Dr. Julio Friedmann: Net zero means that any residual emissions must be balanced by removal, as Secretary Moniz said. It means that reduction of co2 emissions and removal of co2 emissions are complementary but distinct actions and that both are necessary. The National Academies and the IPCC find that this must be done at enormous scale exceeding the size of the global oil and gas industry today. We are not where we need to be to make this real. 48:35 Shannon Angielski: In addition, the International Energy Agency modelled the contributions of different technologies to meet that mid-century 2 degree scenario. And it shows that CCUS accounts for approximately 100 Giga tons of needed global co2 emissions reductions by 2060. To put this into perspective, this would be achieved by the operation of 1100 carbon capture systems on the equivalent of 500 megawatt coal fired units, or 3200 natural gas combined cycle units, which would need to be operating for the next 30 years. 1:59:00 Steven Winberg: The rest of the world is going to continue using fossil energy, whether it's coal or oil or natural gas. And that's why we have moved forward quickly on the coal first program, because it offers the opportunity for what I think of as 21st century coal. Right now the Chinese own the space in power generation — coal fired power generation. We have an opportunity to take technology and springboard over what the Chinese are building, which is basically 1970s vintage technology that we built, and they now have improved slightly, but they're selling it around the world, to countries that have coal under their feet, and they're going to continue using that coal. But with the coal first program, we can move into power generation, and we can move into hydrogen production, because these countries also, as they build out their transport sector, may not do it the same way that developed countries, they may move more swiftly into hydrogen. And so there's an opportunity there to take our technology using their natural resources that are under their feet, and produce zero emitting power generation and zero emitting hydrogen and perhaps even net negative hydrogen and net negative electricity and they can use that hydrogen in the transportation sector as well as the industrial sector. Mateo Jaramillo, co-founder and CEO of Form Energy, on the importance of long-term energy storage:“Lithium Ion will continue to have a very important role to play, but there remains a key function which needs to be replaced on the grid, and that is a function that is currently being provided by coal and natural gas. That is the energy demand when you don't have wind or solar. So, that's the kind of moment we have to solve for from an energy storage perspective.” - Mateo Jaramillo on Scalable Multi-Day Storage SolutionsMateo Jaramillo earned his AB in Economics from Harvard, and then earned a Master's in Theology from Yale Divinity School.Realizing he was more into solving scientific problems than vocational ministry, Mateo became COO and part of the founding team at Gaia Power Technologies, an energy storage firm.In 2009, Mateo joined Telsa and oversaw product lines, business model definition, global policy and business development.Mateo then co-founded Form Energy, whose mission is grid decarbonization through multi-day storage.I'm happy to say that Mateo also serves on the board for the American Clean Power Association, the leading federation of renewable energy companies, where they spend their time expediting the advancement of clean energy as the dominant power source in America.

The battery works with a process the company calls “reversible rusting,” in which the battery charges and discharges by converting iron back and forth into rust. - To charge, an electric current converts rust back to iron and the battery breathes out oxygen. To discharge, the battery takes in oxygen from the air and converts the iron to rust. - Each battery is filled with a non-flammable electrolyte liquid, similar to the electrolyte used in AA batteries, and is about the size of a washing machine, Form Energy says. Thousands of the washing machine-size battery modules are clumped together in power blocks and depending on what is needed, tens to hundreds of power blocks can be connected to the electricity grid. · Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/25/form-energy-raises-240-million-on-iron-air-battery-promise.html US: 2022 HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC GETS LOWER PRICE - The 2022 model year Hyundai Kona Electric in the U.S. has an MSRP price of $34,000, which is $3,390 less (or almost 10%) than in the case of the 2021 model year. - The new MSRP is close to the MSRP of the Chevrolet Bolt EV/Chevrolet Bolt EUV duo, but the Kona Electric is still eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit. - It makes the car probably the cheapest in terms of price (MSRP + DST) per mile of EPA range, at $136/mile. That should allow EV drivers to find charging stations much more easily on the go. - Previously, in some vehicles, drivers had to pull up the app separately on their devices, which involves pulling over and closing any apps already in use through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. - In addition to locating charging stations, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity will let drivers remotely start and stop a charging session, as well as view details of charging plans, including any free charging that might be included with the purchase of a vehicle, according to Electrify America. · Original Source : https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1133369_electrify-america-makes-it-a-lot-easier-to-find-ev-chargers-while-you-drive LIME UNLEASHES 1,000 KICK SCOOTERS IN NEW YORK CITY - Lime has launched 1,000 electric scooters in New York City to kick off the Department of Transportation's East Bronx scooter-sharing pilot. New York will become just the second city in the United States to launch Lime's latest generation scooter, the Gen4. - Lime says it builds on some positive history in New York as it previously provided shared electric bicycles as part of NYC DOT's dockless bike-share pilot. This episode originally aired on The Interchange.Back in 2016, Mateo Jaramillo left Tesla, where he was leading the stationary energy storage business, and started looking for a new challenge to tackle. He took on long-duration energy storage -- not long duration like 8 hours or 12 hours, but days or weeks or more. In 2017 he came on the show to talk about it. He formed a company, now Form Energy, that has been toiling on this problem in stealth mode. Apart from saying they were building a "metal air" battery, his team held the technology close to the vest. That is, until last week. The company announced a $200M Series D financing led by ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker, and in the process finally made public the technology, which is an iron air chemistry. Full disclosure: Shayle led Energy Impact Partners' investment in Form.Shayle and Mateo discuss the technology itself and the counterintuitive economics that Mateo believes will make it work. They also examine how it beat out the alternatives and how it might complement more efficient, but more expensive lithium-ion. It turns out financial modeling was far more important than spec sheets in understanding the tradeoffs. They tackle the critical question: Where exactly are the profitable applications of this technology before we hit very high 80% renewables? They also talk about the semantics of long-duration storage vs. multi-day storage, why Mateo hates holy grails, and potential partnerships with tofu companies. The Energy Gang is brought to you by Sungrow. On this week's episode of Minds Over Money, I go over 3 headlines from last week that directly impact the economy and potentially your investment portfolio. I also examine how systems achieve goals, and how the success of your financial goals will be determined by the systems you put in place. The first headline, “Import Surge”, is an article that explores how the current surge in imports at our busiest ports - Los Angeles and New York City – are increasingly crowded with shipping containers, and thus increasing the cost of warehousing. The second headline, “Breakthrough in Long-Duration Batteries”, discusses how startup company, Form Energy, has had a breakthrough in their creation of a long-duration battery which will greatly help with the viability of a carbon neutral grid in the future. Our final headline, “Artificial Intelligence Isn't Intelligent”, is a deep dive into the limitations of current applications for AI and how a replacement for human intelligence is a long way off. Hope you enjoy it!
The energy world is excited about Form Energy, which has debuted a genuinely cheap ($20/kWh) battery that can discharge for more than 150 hours. But is there a market for long-duration storage yet? Get full access to Volts at www.volts.wtf/subscribe
