Funds editor Harriet Matthews speaks to William Barrett, co-founder and managing partner at private capital adviser Reach Capital, about the changing private capital advisory market, how the firm is advising its private equity (PE) clients to navigate primary and secondary fundraises in the current market, and what's next for the independent placement agent.Investment banks have been building up their private fund advisory capabilities in recent years via consolidation, with notable recent deals including Houlihan Lokey's acquisition of Triago. They have also hired staff and even engaged in joint ventures with specialised firms to offer fundraising or secondaries advice to their clients.Against this backdrop, and as an independent private capital advisor, Barrett discusses how Reach Capital has continued to develop its service offering, including the addition of private wealth capabilities. He also shares insights into how Reach Capital approaches taking on primary and secondary capital raising mandates.Given the challenging fundraising market, there are certain steps that GPs can undertake to pave the way for a successful fundraise, according to Barrett. This includes knowing your client, including the context they are operating in and the other types of investment opportunities that might be on the table for them.Lastly, Barrett shares his outlook for the primary PE fundraising market and how this will develop in the coming months, and discusses how Reach Capital is planning to continue to grow its service offering and the technology and data that supports it.Introduction – 0:42Interview with William Barrett, Reach Capital – 2:19Current state and evolution of the private capital advisory market – 2:27Adapting to the needs of GP clients – 5:24Getting comfortable with taking on primary mandates – 10:00Taking on secondary mandates: comfort and transparency – 12:39Advice to GPs: speak to your clients, prepare, and tailor your LP pitches – 16:07The outlook for primary private equity fundraising – 22:07What's next for Reach Capital? – 24:38You can listen to the podcast on your favourite podcasting platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts. If you would like to hear more podcasts produced by ION Analytics, you can access the ION Analytics channel on Apple Podcasts.Theme music: ©2012 Kick Up The Fire

Tony Wan is no stranger to the Voices of e-Learning podcast. This episode marked Wan's third appearance. People may know Wan from his days as Managing Editor at EdSurge, but Wan has a new role as Head of Investor Content at Reach Capital. And that role shares competition with some other self-identifiers as Wan considers himself a runner, a gamer, a writer, and a first-time father as of five months ago.Wan loves that he gets to write about what's going on in the EdTech space. And Wan's latest report, U.S. Edtech's Roaring 20's Begin with $8.2 Billion Invested in 2021, was a great starting point for his latest conversation with JW Marshall. When Wan began writing about EdTech, he remembers the excitement when the market hit $1 billion in investments. And 2020's reach of $2 billion now seems like a distant memory. “When I looked at the numbers last year, in 2021, It quadrupled to $8.2 billion,” Wan said. “This is just U.S. EdTech, and this is primarily for companies serving pre-k, k-12, higher education, and the workforce.”While $8.2 billion is nothing to sneeze at, Wan said that number still represents only a small percentage of investment capital raised in the U.S. each year. And the lion's share, roughly 70% of the EdTech investments, went to the top 20-21 deals. “And when you take a look at the 21 biggest deals of 2021, they pretty much span across the board from k-12 to higher ed, and the workforce and consumer,” Wan said. “And in corporate training, the biggest deal went to a company called Articulate.”The good news for the k-12 space, which Wan said does not always see its fair share of investment opportunities, is that the pandemic may have spurred more interest and activity in this sector. And Wan believes interest in technology investments into this area should continue beyond the pandemic.

That's how she found her calling working for organizations that focused on promoting financial development in emerging markets through tech innovation. She also believes that the private and public sectors can work together to foster disruptive innovation with the right foundation.Fifth comes the episode where the podcast hosts sat down with Robbie J. SummaryOur guest today is Jennifer Carolan. Jennifer started her career as a classroom teacher in a Chicago district. She then moved to California to attend Stanford, and there got inspired to use her teaching experience in support od tech founders. So she joined NewSchools Venture Fund where she learned the craft of VC, while also co-creating and teaching a course at Stanford. After that, Jennifer co-founded Reach Capital, with a first fund in 2000, a second fund in 2018 and a third fund more recently. In this episode, Jennifer and I talk about how student engagement is an outcome of strong pedagogy. We then describe a new generation of global education companies that are partnering with school districts and we caution policy makers that need to rise to the occasion in order to keep innovation from escaping the public school system. Now, though, he will be making the news and not just covering it.“As the industry evolves, I'm really surprised at how many new things I'm learning about different kinds of markets where there's certainly an education or learning component to it." - Tony WanAfter talking about Wan's move, they dug into investment in EdTech. He noted that while most think of EdTech as exclusive to K-12, post-secondary, and early childhood, the industry has a lot more breadth. The EdTech space often intersects and merges with other industries, such as family tech, mental health, and physical health.“As the industry evolves, I'm really surprised at how many new things I'm learning about different kinds of markets where there's certainly an education or learning component to it,” Wan said before digging into the deals currently happening in the market. In his most recent piece, he noted the pace and flurry of the deals happening as investment capital hit $3.2 billion in the first half of 2021. Current deals he covered include the recent filing for an IPO by Duolingo. Publicly-traded company 2U, a company that provides short courses, boot camps, and online programs from universities, acquired EdX for $800 million. The largest investment so far in 2021 went to Kajabi, who raised $550 million.

I first met Shawn Carolan and his wife Jennifer at the turn of the century at 11,000 feet. I was hiking with my kids between the Yosemite High Sierra camps. Having just retired from a career as an entrepreneur I had started thinking about why startups were different from large companies. The ideas were bouncing around my head so hard that I shared them with these strangers around a campfire, drawing out the four steps with a stick in the dirt. Shawn immediately said the name I had given the four steps was confusing – I had called it market development – he suggested that I call it Customer Development – and the name stuck. What I didn’t realize was that both were graduate students at Stanford and later both would become great VCs – Shawn at Menlo Ventures and Jennifer at Reach Capital. (And Jennifer is now my co-instructor in the Stanford Lean LaunchPad class.)

Our guest for this Episode of The Small Business Show is Marcy Rye from, Founder & CEO Wire Media. How do you create a beautiful, functional and SEO-optimized website? Why is accessibility becoming an important part of website design? Marcy talked us through the best practices for a small business website. She also explained how a DIY, freelance designer and design firm approach differs in building a website.According to Marcy, clients are often worried about getting all the content ready for a website redesign project (it's a lot of work, usually). She helps them to prioritize based on what we need to keep the design process moving forward, and provides templates and schedules to help keep them on track. When clients often give her direction to change something on a website, such as, "make the button larger". She would always ask them what is the problem they're trying to solve. Most of them are relieved to learn that if they just tell her the problem they see, she can come up with cost-effective, user-friendly ways to solve them and they don't have to try to figure it out.Lastly, clients aren't sure what a website should cost and so list all kinds of features and requirements for their site. She helps them again to prioritize what's really necessary based on their internal strategic goals as well as user goals and objectives (often by doing user research or testing). This also takes stakeholder personal opinions out of the equation, making for a smooth process. GUEST INFO:Marcy is the founder of Wire Media, an award winning creative agency that provides content, design, and technology services to create and sustain highly effective websites for nonprofits, universities, and social good companies. It's been a year since kids across the country left their classrooms and started learning from home. Many students find the virtual classroom a poor substitute for the real thing. And far too many families aren't properly equipped for remote learning, which only exacerbates the persistent social and racial inequities in education. Still, the pandemic is ushering in a new reliance on technology in education - and investors are betting tech only becomes more integral to the classroom.   On today's Brainstorm, hosts Michal Lev-Ram and Brian O'Keefe discuss the growth of education technology, and ask how well it works. Hardeep Gulati, CEO of PowerSchool, explains that the company's end-to-end platform serves not just students and teachers, but parents and administrators as well.   James Kim, a partner at Reach Capital – a venture capital firm focused on education – tells us about some of the innovations he's seeing from ed-tech startups.  Finally, Ellen Meier and Karen Kirsch Page of Teachers College Columbia University discuss the importance using technology to engage students in new ways, and how to best help teachers make the most of digital tools.

LINKS Esteban Sosnik: LinkedIn | Twitter Reach Capital: Sitio | Twitter | LinkedIn | Medium ¡NECESITAMOS CRECER! Terri and her producer Jacqueline sit down over some champagne to talk about how she made her first angel investment in MyHealthTeams and realized after her second, third and fourth investments (Sandstone Diagnostics, Zum and TomboyX) that her investment thesis was to invest in companies with products or services that improve people’s lives. Now she is focused exclusively on digital health which is a narrowing of her original thesis.   Show Highlights Terri makes the intro as to the topic and why this week she is talking about her angel investments Terri is going to be on a medtech angels panel at RESI in San Francisco this week and will be focused on her investment interest area of digital health while the other panelists will most likely be focused on Terri talks about the need to leverage data and technology to flip healthcare on its head and put information in the hands of patients Terri talks about how optimistic she is about Apple’s approach to changing healthcare versus how disappointed she is with Google and Verily and her experience with Project Baseline Terri’s first angel investment was in: MyHealthTeams: social networks for millions of people living with chronic illnesses. They currently have 28 conditions including MS, Lupus, HIV, diabetes, Parkinsons. Female co-founder based in San Francisco. Terri has doubled down on this company in their Series B and Series C raises. Jacqueline asked what an investment thesis is and Terri responded that she sees it as the criteria under which she chooses in her investments. Her investment thesis is to invest in companies that have products or services that improve people’s lives. Terri talks about not actively looking for diverse founding teams but gravitating towards Sandstone Diagnostics: home sperm count device and kit with an application for men to monitor their sperm count from home with guidance for improving the count from the application. The product is Trak and is FDA cleared. Founder was male but they brought in a new CEO, Karen Drexler shortly after Terri’s first investment (she’s tripled down on this one). They are based Livermore, CA. Zum: on demand and scheduled rides and care for kids ages 5 and up. Terri has tripled down on her investment with them. Female CEO and co-founder. If this had existed when her kids were little, her husband could have continued to work. Sequoia led a $5M Series A in early 2017 which is a good signal. Jacqueline asks Terri how she decides to invest in a company. Her response: She listens to her gut It has to be something that the world needs She has to believe the management team is going to take the company far There has to be a big enough market opportunity The company needs to have a big enough opportunity that a VC will invest to help the startup grow It has to make sense and be reasonable and rational She looks for revenue opportunities and the possibility of getting profitable Terri is an EIR (advisor) with Tech Futures Group and sees a lot of people looking for angel investors to invest in their research projects. This doesn’t resonate well with Terri; she needs to be able to see a path to revenue. TomboyX: underwear, swimwear, socks and hats designed for people regardless of where they fit into the size or gender spectrum. Terri knows many women who have been buying men’s underwear that doesn’t quite fit them. The female co-founders saw this as an opportunity and have created a fabulous brand and product. Terri’s daughter and one of Jacqueline’s daughters loves their underwear. Terri has tripled down on this one. They are based in Seattle, WA. Terri loves the brand play and sees them as an early exit to a company like Calvin Klein, Nordstrom, Fruit of the Loom, or Hanes. Terri talks about the shift in demographics and how women would much rather buy, and pay a premium, for products made for them. Jacqueline asked why Terri invested in TomboyX again. Terri continued to believe in what they were doing, was impressed with their growth, and she wanted to continue to support them as they encountered cash crunches due to their growth. Terri is frustrated by the lack of funding opportunities for some of these companies. Terri was asked to contribute an essay for a book that Jenn LeBlanc is writing about supporting female founders. Terri is determined to work with other like-minded women looking to invest in some of the overlooked opportunities by creating a mesh network of investors across the country and around the world. Tactical Haptics: tactical feedback controller, initially for VR. Long term, medical training. All male team based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Terri believes that women need to take bigger financial risks to achieve the rewards that men are able to achieve. Terri was looking at between 250-500 deals a month between January and August 2017 and didn’t feel the need to invest in any of them. Tueo Health: digital health solution to improve the monitoring and management of children’s’ asthma. Female CEO/Co-Founder: Bronwyn Harris…she is totally kick ass. They are based in San Francisco. Terri talked about the importance of having healthcare solutions for kids that make the lives of parents better as most of the impact is on the mom. It’s also important to get ahead of the diseases because they turn into more significant issues when the kids become adults. Magnetic Insight: they are bringing clinical imaging into the 21st century. They do magnetic particle imagining which is a new ultrasensitive high resolution molecular imaging approach that detects nanoparticles in the body over a great length of time. Female CEO and Co-Founder; based in Alameda, CA.   Call to Action Get outside of your comfort zone. Take a risk. Privacy. What a buzzword, but also a major point of contention for the past twelve months. Parents, companies, educators… everyone’s been jumping into the conversation on this topic. The proliferation of education technology has led to many questions about what, and how, student data is collected, analyzed and used. As student privacy and security concerns grow, how do we respond? Last week, EdSurge conducted a panel in partnership with Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, a global law firm that’s got its eye on the privacy debate. Panelists included Dan Carroll, co-founder of edtech company Clever, and Reach Capital partner Shauntel Poulson. EdSurge CEO Betsy Corcoran dove into how edtech leaders should address privacy issues while still advancing learning opportunities. Do companies need to yield to the demands and whims of privacy critics? Or can we all somehow reach a Kum-ba-ya understanding around the edtech campfire? Listen to the podcast to find out.
