POPULARITY
It's that time again. Our little longtime listeners know what the Juno Awards (Canada's answer to the Grammies) mean to us. At least the Metal category, being two time judges ourselves. So we're stoked for this year's nominees. Especially since four out of five are Radioactive Metal alum. So in the spirit of the Junos, we go over the list and "cast our vote" over the air. You'll find making a pick to be a Herculean task too. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we go over the "Back To The Beginning" final Ozzy gig and announce the Manitoba Metalfest. Musically, we crank Deceased, Anciients, Striker, Warpig, Steel Inferno, Pupil Slicer, Drop Off Point, Malefaction and introduce Finland's Steel Machine in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!
Isaurian, the Brazilian doomgaze/post-rock project, will release their new album, ‘The Pulsing Rush', on October 25th. Having emerged in 2017 with the desire to make heavy, intense and emotional art via a group of musicians with more than 20 years of experience, Isaurian have made records with some of the most renowned producers in the world. Proudcers like Rhys Fülber (Paradise Lost, Fear Factory), Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Caspian), Kevin Ratterman (Emma Ruth Rundle, Sumac) and Chris Common (Pelican, Chelsea Wolfe). Alongside renowned producer Jesse Gander (Brutus, Anciients), this new album sees the band delving deeper into their heavy origins while still exploring shoegaze and post-rock soundscapes, touching on themes of love, sex, loss and depression. After going through a production period plagued by personal issues that included the death of a brother and a cancer diagnosis, Isaurian has delivered their most mature and complex record to date while maintaining the band's main characteristic: real, heartfelt, emotional, human music. It these incredible peaks and valleys that we explore in this interview. Speaking with songwriter / guitarist / vocalist Jorge Rabelo about the new record and how they made it a reality under such testing circumstances. We also explore the detail within the record, the reasons they don't play live much, what the future might hold, and so much more. In Mourning - A Vow To Conquer The Ocean [The Weight Of Oceans, 2012]Merciless - Back to North [Unbound, 1994]Anciients - The Longest River [Heart of Oak, 2013]Magoth - Entering the Cavern of Grief [Invictus, 2020]Order of Ennead - A Portal to Rapture [An Examination of Being, 2010]Mors Principium Est - The Journey [Dawn of the 5TH Era, 2014]Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun [Far Away from the Sun, 1996]

We’ve got another Gut Feeling podcast interview on deck this week, and it’s a doozy! The talk is with Jesse Gander, a longtime member of Vancouver’s music community as both a performer (d.b.s., Needles//Pins, Uptights, Operation Makeout, Black Rice, Ghost House, and more) and a prolific engineer/producer.Jesse gets into how he first got interested in the recording arts, from experimenting with his boombox’s bass and treble levels, to cutting four-track demos for bands in exchange for a six-pack, to investing in himself by learning Pro Tools and opening his Rec Age Recorders in his parents’ basement, to tracking countless bands these days at Rain City Recorders. His CV is massive, nearing six hundred releases and counting, including records with Japandroids, White Lung, the Pack A.D., Brutus, a Juno-winning album from Anciients, and so much more. Some things to look forward to that Jesse mentions throughout the discussion: he’s recorded new work from Brutal Poodle and Grave Infestation; he and the rest of Needles//Pins have another record coming out; d.b.s. is having their full catalogue re-released digitally through Boat Dreams from the Hill (with the possibility of some vinyl re-releases coming up, too). Also hoping that the World of S**t solo album he’s been prepping since the ‘90s sees the light of day.Third time’s a charm: I’d mentioned this in the interview and the intro, but want to clarify that the old photos of the Cramps, Nick Cave, and R.E.M. that have hung in Jesse’s various studios were taken by his dad. Hope you enjoy! Get on the email list at gutfeeling.substack.com
Blast away the smoke with us as we kick off the show with a jam from Ulthar's punishing new death metal masterpiece Providence! We'll get proggy with Intronaut, Anciients and Voivod, ride into battle with Throne Of Iron, Visigoth and War Dogs, and then bring the doom with Paradise Lost, Electric Wizard and Thou! The second half of the show will feature some ferocious crusty hardcore with Nails, Erosion and WTCHDR, and we'll give 'er with Vancouver skate-thrashers Christ Air and S.T.R.E.E.T.S. We'll hear some epic tales of glory and victory with Crystal Viper, Ensiferum and 3 Inches of Blood, and more! Plus, we'll dig a track by UK doom-thrash legends Sacriledge off their classic debut record Behind The Realms Of Madness out of the Graveyard! Let's get rad!

In this installment, two of your three favorite heavy metal caballeros review the latest albums from Gabriel and the Apocalypse, The Devil Wears Prada, Thy Catafalque, Gatecreeper, Anciients, Meshuggah and Alter Bridge. General, recording, touring and charting news is reviewed for several artists, including Primus, Sylosis, Quiet Riot, Slipknot, Mastodon, The Devil You Know, Conquering Dystopia, Abbath, Deicide, Protest the Hero, Darkest Hour, Amorphis, Korn, Trivium, The Black Dahlia Murder and more. In the midst of the news, Chris discusses the crowdfunding campaign for Jason Becker's forthcoming project before Dan gives an update on the ongoing crowdfunding campaign for A Sound of Thunder's forthcoming covers album and relays some recent struggles of and fundraising attempts by Bill Manspeaker of Green Jelly. Pat and Reece on the NY side of things offer up an interview with Gareth Murdock of Alestorm as well as an accompanying I Saw a Show segment of their performance that same evening. We close out the show with a discussion about the importance of pacing when it comes to laying down the tracklist for an album.
This week we have a set of surprise guests that we announced last week! I guess that's not really a surprise, huh? It's Eric and Drew from TABPxDSME, in other words The Aurora Borealis Project and Drewsif Stalin's Musical Endeavors! We have a good old time trying to talk about their amazing upcoming album The World Is A Colder Place Now. Well, we try anyway. Since Drew and I are both invested in derailing as much as possible, it goes to different places. I had a great time! Then, we talk about the news of the week. What news of the week? Stuff like Misha of Periphery doing a song for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Heri Joensen of Tyr killing whales and defending his actions, Stereogum's monthly metal roundup, You Bred Raptors playing to an empty venue, then new music or teases towards such by Departe, Saor, Destrage, System of a Down, Anaal Nathrakh, Anciients, Alcest, Negura Bunget, Hannes Grossmann, and Allegaeon. Eden gets pretty mad about the last one!
You didn't think that, once I discovered the secret of being lazy about these show notes, I'd go back to being not lazy, right? The structure of that sentence was abysmal. But I had a fun time trolling Eden this episode, and so did his new dog (RIP)! We talk about: Oddland, Disillusion, Alcest, ColdWorld, Native Construct, Babymetal, Devin Townsend, Departe, Brain Tentacles, Opeth, Orphaned Land, Infant Annihilator, Betraying the Martyrs, Inanimate Existence, Fountainhead, Anciients, Hannes Grossmann, Leander, Abnormality, Wintersun and Nader Sadek. Then, balls deep on Lamb of Dog! I mean, Lamb of God!
