An episode so good, it'll make you wish you had three ears. Buzzy Cohen (Baby Got Facts: Totally '90s Trivia) returns for another delightful episode, breaking down Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" and the 1990 film adaptation directed by Paul Verhoeven, with a screenplay by Dan O'Bannon & Ronald Shusett and Gary Goldman. Reality, virtual reality, false memories, real (?) memories, mutants, great practical special effects, rods of air, a young Sharon Stone, and enough Arnold Schwarzenegger one-liners to fill a burn book. Get your EARS to Mars. We'll see you at the party, Richter. Hosted by Allan Traylor, Justin Remer, and Tyler Austin. Produced by Justin Remer. Recorded at the LAPL Octavia Lab. Opening music: "Optimism (Instrumental)" by Duck the Piano Wire. Closing music: "Rule of 3s (Solemnity Child)" by Elastic No-No Band.

Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1979 protopunk science-fiction horror masterpiece, Alien – directed by Ridley Scott; written by Dan O'Bannon; story by Dan O'Bannon & Ronald Shusett; starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. After investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin, the crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform.Alien is the ultimate sci-fi horror mashup that revolutionized the two genres and created a pop-culture sensation. It has all the thematic elements of cyberpunk – MUTHER, the AI-computer that controls the ship and only parcels out information on the need-to-know basis to the expendable crew; ASH, the evil android that is jeopardizing the safety of the crew because he's following orders from the Company – WEYLAND-YUTANI, the evil multi-national corporation that wants the xenomorph for their bio-weapons division – to the design of the bio-mechanical planetoid that pulses with xenomorphic dread. If cosmic horror is defined as “the terror of the unknowable and incomprehensible”, then ALIEN fits it like a glove. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. Directed by Ridley Scott, Alien is the science fiction horror film based on a story by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett. Jason and Rob rewind to 1979 to review the movie that horrifically demonstrated that in space no one can hear you scream and kicked off a media franchise of films, books, video games, and toys. It may even be the film responsible for propelling the acting career of lead actress Sigourney Weaver. In deep space, the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo is awakened from their cryo-sleep capsules halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an alien vessel. The terror begins when the crew encounters a nest of eggs inside the alien ship. An organism from inside an egg leaps out and attaches itself to one of the crew, causing him to fall into a coma.

fWotD Episode 2666: Total Recall (1990 film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 22 August 2024 is Total Recall (1990 film).Total Recall is a 1990 American science-fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven, with a screenplay by Ronald Shusett, Dan O'Bannon, and Gary Goldman. The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox, and Michael Ironside. Based on the 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick, Total Recall tells the story of Douglas Quaid (Schwarzenegger), a construction worker who receives an implanted memory of a fantastical adventure on Mars. He subsequently finds his adventure occurring in reality as agents of a shadow organization try to prevent him from recovering memories of his past as a Martian secret agent aiming to stop the tyrannical regime of Martian dictator Vilos Cohaagen (Cox).Shusett bought the rights to Dick's short story in 1974 and developed a script with O'Bannon. Although considered promising, the ambitious scope kept the project in development hell at multiple studios over sixteen years, seeing forty script drafts, seven different directors, and multiple actors cast as Quaid. Total Recall eventually entered the early stages of filming in 1987 under the De Laurentiis Entertainment Group shortly before its bankruptcy. Schwarzenegger, who had long held an interest in the project but had been dismissed as inappropriate for the lead role, convinced Carolco Pictures to purchase the rights and develop the film with him as the star. On an estimated $48–80 million budget (making it one of the most expensive films made in its time), filming took place on expansive sets at Estudios Churubusco in Mexico over six months. Cast and crew experienced numerous injuries and illnesses during filming.Total Recall was anticipated to be one of the year's most successful films. On its release, the film earned approximately $261.4 million worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year. Its critical reception was mixed, with reviewers praising its themes of identity and questioning reality, but criticizing content perceived as vulgar and violent. The practical special effects were well received, earning the film an Academy Award, and the score by Jerry Goldsmith has been praised as one of his best works.Since its release, Total Recall has been praised for its ambiguous ending positing whether Quaid's adventures are real or a fantasy, and it has also been analyzed for themes of authoritarianism and colonialism. Retrospective reviews have called it one of Schwarzenegger's best films and placed it among the best science fiction films ever made. Alongside comic books and video games, Total Recall has been adapted into the 1999 television series Total Recall 2070. An early attempt at a sequel, based on Dick's The Minority Report, became the 2002 standalone film Minority Report, and a 2012 remake, also titled Total Recall, failed to replicate the success of the original. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:10 UTC on Thursday, 22 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Total Recall (1990 film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Salli.

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Alien, which was recently in theaters again for said anniversary. Alien is a science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott. It was written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett. The movie opened to a limited release on May 25, 1979, with a wide release on June 22. In the film, the crew of the commercial vessel Nostromo face a deadly extraterrestrial (Bolaji Badejo) aboard their spaceship. The crew consists of Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), Dallas (Tom Skerritt), Kane (John Hurt), Lambert (Veronica Cartwright), Parker (Yaphet Kotto), Brett (Harry Dean Stanton), and Ash (Ian Holm). Alien finished fifth at the 1979 domestic box office, grossing $78.9 million. The film garnered mixed reviews upon release but won an Academy Award for Visual Effects and received a nomination for Set Decoration. Alien is now considered one of greatest and most influential films of the sci-fi and horror genres. It has spawned numerous sequels, prequels, and spinoffs, including a film releasing this summer and a TV show next year. Aaron and Josh talk about their histories with the film before going into its plot, performances, effects, and legacy. They also touch upon their feelings about Ridley Scott. For another classic horror film (also starring Veronica Cartwright), you can listen to Aaron and Josh's podcast on The Birds. All episodes are made available to Patreon subscribers one week before their general release. We're joined by screenwriter Tom Vaughan to discuss a pair of cult classics by director Gary Sherman. We dig into the small-town murder-conspiracy thriller Dead and Buried as well as the ne plus ultra sleaze-thriller Vice Squad. The strengths and weaknesses of the films make for an interesting contrast that leads into a larger discussion about the practical intersections of screenwriting and on set filmmaking (with some talk about meddling producers thrown in for good measure.) The trio compares Dead and Buried's wonky & lumpy script (by Alien and Total Recall scribes Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett) to Vice Squad's drum-tight story to consider how screenwriting plays into (or interferes with) making two such memorable films. It's 1981, and things are not okay. Seemingly normal people are doing some pretty messed up things. One might even describe these acts as...nasty.A picturesque coastal town is the setting for the local residents to just kill people off whenever they feel like it. The local sheriff does his best to solve these mysterious deaths, but who can he trust? Especially when the mortician seems so into the art of perfectly preserving these corpses. You may not want to visit Potter's Bluff, or you could run the risk of becoming Dead & Buried (1981). A divided Berlin becomes the backdrop for a family drama. Certainly no elements of horror here. Not at all. The intense, explosive, at times, end of a relationship, and the disconcerting beginning of another. But what is that thing that Anna has in that apartment? And why has she become so obsessed? Possession (1981) has scenes that must be seen to be believed. And then from there, it's the Common Craig's Top 5 list of horror movies from 1981! The Summer of the 80s is really just getting underway.

Alien is a movie with a ton of cool themes; the ones we pull for Plug It Up are sex and motherhood (with bonus horrific pregnancy/birth).
After the success of ALIEN, you'd think that Dan O'Bannon's screenwriting career would have really taken off, but due to a very public battle over the screen credits on that film, that unfortunately wasn't the case. The good news is that O'Bannon's ALIEN co-writer Ronald Shusett had a project that he'd been working on prior to ALIEN about a small New England town that was overtaken by the undead, and he invited O'Bannon to help him out with the screenplay. The resulting film was DEAD & BURIED, directed by Gary Sherman, although O'Bannon's contributions to the script are disputed (mostly by O'Bannon himself). In this episode, we'll discuss the extent of O'Bannon's involvement, plus the filming of the cult film itself, which featured early credits from genre stalwarts such as Robert England and Stan Winston. Well we've done it, but at what cost? This episode covers the two films in the quite frankly very bad AVP franchise - 'Alien V Predator', and 'AVP: Requiem' and as is tradition, it's a drinking game doozy. Alien vs. Predator (also known as AVP: Alien vs. Predator) is a 2004 science fiction action film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and starring Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova, Lance Henriksen and Ewen Bremner. It is the first film installment of the Alien vs. Predator franchise, adapting a crossover bringing together the eponymous creatures of the Alien and Predator series, a concept which originated in a 1989 comic book. Anderson wrote the story together with the creators of the Alien franchise, Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, and Anderson and Shane Salerno adapted the story into a screenplay. Their writing was influenced by Aztec mythology, the comic book series, and the writings of Erich von Däniken. In the film, scientists are caught in the crossfire of an ancient battle between Aliens and Predators as they attempt to escape a bygone pyramid. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (also known as AVPR: Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem) is a 2007 American science fiction action film directed by the Brothers Strause (Colin and Greg Strause) in their directorial debut and written by Shane Salerno. The film stars Steven Pasquale, Reiko Aylesworth, John Ortiz, Johnny Lewis, and Ariel Gade. It is a sequel to Alien vs. Predator (2004), and the second and latest installment in the Alien vs. Predator franchise, continuing the crossover between the Alien and Predator franchises.

It's been a long day, but we're finally at the peak. This episode covers the first two films in the Alien franchise - 'Alien', and 'Aliens'. Our drinking game rule this week is from the legendary Sam Hurley from Movie Reviews in 20 Q's. You can find Sam at https://mritqs.podbean.com/ Alien is a 1979 science-fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O'Bannon. Based on a story by O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, it follows the crew of the commercial space tug Nostromo, who encounter the eponymous Alien, a deadly and aggressive extraterrestrial set loose on the ship. The film stars Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. It was produced by Gordon Carroll, David Giler, and Walter Hill through their company Brandywine Productions, and was distributed by 20th Century Fox. Giler and Hill revised and made additions to the script; Shusett was executive producer. The Alien and its accompanying artifacts were designed by the Swiss artist H. R. Giger, while concept artists Ron Cobb and Chris Foss designed the more human settings. Aliens is a 1986 American science fiction action film written and directed by James Cameron, produced by Gale Anne Hurd and starring Sigourney Weaver. The second installment in the Alien franchise, it follows Ellen Ripley (Weaver) as she returns to the moon where her crew encountered the hostile Alien creature, this time accompanied by a unit of space marines. Additional roles are played by Carrie Henn, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein, William Hope, Al Matthews, and Bill Paxton.
This week we spend an entire episode on the Alien Franchise because there Ridley Scott said he wants to finish what he stated but Sigourney Weaver is done with Alien!
"Total Recall" (1990) is more than a sci-fi action movie because its concept melds reality, false memory, and real memory. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, it stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Rachel Ticotin, and Ronny Cox. But did you know its based on the 1966 short story "We Can Remember it for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick? Tune in as we discuss some movie trivia, dig into some info about author Philip K. In space... no one can hear anything but my annoying nasally voice yelling at my wife and best friend about how much I love Alien! Written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, the film was O'Bannon's reintroduction to Hollywood after living in a think-tank on the ill-fated Jodorowsky's Dune. The time abroad served invaluable, as it introduced him to H.R. Giger and his hideously sexual brooding art that would take an admittedly lacking story and turn it into a classic with the help of director, Ridley Scott. Hot off the moderate success of The Duelists, Scott decided to leave the Napoleonic era long in the past, delving into a gritty, industrial future. Between Giger and O'Bannon (who did set design for Dark Star and Star Wars) the film has an unmistakable aesthetic, which was captured perfectly by Scott, much to the chagrin of some of his actors. For instance, Tom Skerritt, was openly critical of Scott taking so long to set up shots, because he fell out of character. The film stars Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley. Aside from a part in Madman (which you can see was later aggrandized after the success of Alien) Weaver was predominantly a theater actor. She would go on to make more than the budget of this entire film to appear in the sequel: Aliens. She would go on to star in four installments of this series, which has grossed over $1,000,000,000 in her lifetime. Listen as we discuss the practical effects, such as the design of the Nostromo and the Space Jockey, and the ingenuity of using real animal parts in the facehugger's eggsack. Did you know that they used condoms in making the xenomorph? Well don't worry, because Jake mentions it like 10 times throughout this episode. We also discuss some of the deleted scenes and the infamous alternate ending that was luckily scrapped. Following the success of his film school feature Dark Star, which he collaborated with John Carpenter, Dan O'Bannon would team with his house mate, Ronald Shusett to create (arguably) the best and most iconic science fiction horror movie to date.

Welcome to Dark Discussions podcast. Your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that's fantastic. It all started back in the mid-1970's when screenwriters/filmmakers Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett came up with an amazing story about a crew from a mining spacecraft that hears a sentient beacon on a nondescript planetoid. When they go to explore the unknown signal they discover a horror that lead to the classic science fiction horror film, 1979's Ridley Scott directed Alien, and began a franchise that included three sequels and two spin offs with another beloved franchise, Predator. With the release of 2012's Prometheus, a film that has been described as anything from a prequel to Alien or a distinct story set in the Alien universe, Ridley Scott returns to a franchise that made him the iconic director that he happens to be today. With a larger scope and a story that delves into questions about religion, human origin, and existential topics as vast as the ultimate meaning of life, the film presents itself as hard science fiction, in the scale of 2001: A Space Odyssey as well as the novels of such authors as Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov. Dark Discussions as a four way round table discusses a film that has been arguably one of the most anticipated films of the year and gives their opinion on a stunningly beautiful yet flawed film. Get ready for an in-depth conversation while keeping your mind open to both the criticism and the praise.
