It's Die Hard in a hospital! This week, hosts Phil and Liam are taking DESPERATE MEASURES with a very special guest: Peter Gawthorne, aka Phil's dad!!!When his young son Matthew is in need of a bone-marrow transplant, his father, San Francisco cop Frank Conner (Andy Garcia) searches desperately for a compatible donor. However, the only candidate he can find is incarcerated murderer Peter McCabe (Michael Keaton), a notorious criminal mastermind. After McCabe agrees to partake in the procedure, he uses the process as an opportunity to launch an audacious, violent escape attempt, but as Frank and the authorities attempt to contain the situation, Frank comes to realize that he and McCabe are in a symbiotic relationship – and that he must somehow capture his new nemesis while ensuring McCabe is not killed in the process! In this thrilling episode of DIE HARD ON A BLANK, we tackle this high-stakes action thriller directed by French New Wave titan Barbet Schroeder. With its tense hospital setting and cat-and-mouse dynamics, this film gives the 'Die Hard formula' a fresh, medical twist - complete with explosive action and an unrelentingly evil (yet hugely charismatic) villain. We dive into Keaton's chilling performance as Peter McCabe, a dangerous sociopath whose bone marrow might be the key to saving a dying boy's life, and explore Andy Garcia's portrayal of a desperate father willing to break every rule to save his son. How does this underrated gem measure up against other films in the Die Hard-on-a-[blank] subgenre? We've got all the answers! But that's not all! Joining us this week is a very special guest, Phil's dad Peter Gawthorne, a devoted listener of the show and a former hospital manager himself! Fan favorite ‘Petey' brings a fresh perspective on the ‘Die Hard on a Blank' subgenre, making this a uniquely personal episode you won't want to miss. Whether you're a lover of 90s thrillers, a Michael Keaton devotee, a Barbet Schroeder aficionado or you're just here for the father-son banter, this episode has something for everyone!DESPERATE MEASURES trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i63VGK1ElN0At the time of release, DESPERATE MEASURES is streaming on Fubo and Roku and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV, Fandango and all the usual platforms. In honor of the Paris Olympics and the astounding contribution of the French to culture and art of the world, The Kitchen Sisters Present, Archive Fever: Henri Langlois and the history of the Cinémathèque Française, featuring Francis Ford Coppola, Wim Wenders, Tom Luddy, Lotte Eisner, Simone Signoret, Agnes Varda, Costa-Gavras, Barbet Schroeder.Henri Langlois never made a single film — but he's considered one of the most important figures in the history of filmmaking. Possessed by what French philosopher Jacques Derrida called "archive fever," Langlois began obsessively collecting films in the 1930s and by the outset of World War II, he had one of the largest film collections in the world. The archive's impact on the history of French cinema is legendary, as is the legacy of its controversial keeper.Langlois fell in love with film in his teens, just as silent films were being replaced by talkies. "In the early 30s they were destroying every silent movie," says film director Costa-Gavras, now president of Langlois' Cinémathèque Française. "He started collecting all those movies, not just to save them for the future, but to show them.""Langlois educated a whole generation of film archivists and filmmakers," says filmmaker Wim Wenders. "He spread the idea of saving the memory of mankind that is in the history of cinema."This story is part of The Keepers series — Activist archivists, rogue librarians, historians, collectors, curators — keepers of the culture and the free flow of information. Produced by The Kitchen Sisters (Nikki Silva & Davia Nelson) with Nathan Dalton and Brandi Howell. Mixed by Jim McKee.
Despite the critical success of some of these offerings, and some high-profile wins and nominations, none of these films were financially successful thanks to Cannon's hapless marketing strategies and their bad reputation within the film industry (including staggering money losses, a shareholder revolt and an SEC investigation into their accounting practices). Cannon would file for bankruptcy by the end of the eighties. We discuss 5 of these prestige projects: the dark journalism thriller Street Smart (which Cannon financed for Christopher Reeve in exchange for starring in Superman IV and the film that put Morgan Freeman on the map), Andrei Konchalovsky's masterful Runaway Train (the best film the studio ever made) and his followup, the American gothic drama Shy People (an award winner at Cannes which vanished without a trace), Nicolas Roeg's Castaway (the film Oliver Reed was promoting the night he almost beat up David Letterman), and Barbet Schroeder's black comedy about alcoholism Barfly with Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway.

Embraced as a modern holiday classic after its release in 2003, British romantic comedy “Love Actually” has since been chided for its lineup of all-heterosexual couples and sexist storylines. FRANCE 24 critic Lisa Nesselson makes an argument for the film's enduring magic, in part thanks to its incredible cast. But first, she tells us about the delights of Babak Jalali's deadpan comedy drama "Fremont". It stars Anaita Wali Zada as Dunya, a recent Afghan refugee working at a California fortune cookie factory. We also look at Katell Quillévéré's "Along Came Love", inspired by the life of her own grandmother who had a child with a German soldier before he died during World War II, and a retrospective of the work of Iranian-Swiss director Barbet Schroeder.

"TO ALL MY FRIENDS!" The Cannon Bros (Frank & Geoff) stagger down to the local L.A. dive and cheers to 1987's BARFLY! A semi-autobiographical screenplay written by Charles Bukowski and directed by Barbet Schroeder. This critically acclaimed Cannon flick has Mickey Rourke taking some big drunken swings (literally AND with his acting), Faye Dunaway gives a fantastic performance (as do her legs) and Frank Stallone shows he can be more than a classic Norm Macdonald punchline. Barfly maybe hits a little too close for comfort for the Cannon Bros, but that doesn't stop them from raising a glass to this prestige Cannon film. Pour another and turn this episode up louder than Henry's classical music because "endurance is more important than truth." We have a BRAND NEW season with BRAND NEW segments that will BLOW YOU AWAY!!! We start our with one of our TWO QUESTIONS before getting into the inaugural WIKI WIKI WIKI FACTS segment. We also spend quite a bit of time talking about Pink Floyd's "Obscured by Clouds", which has ironically been obscured by the rest of their discography (or at least eclipsed), and we dive into whatever information we were able to find about "La Vallee", the French film by Barbet Schroeder that the album was initially created to score. We might not know why there was a falling out between Pink Floyd and Barbet Schroeder, but what we DO KNOW is that this album belongs right up there with any other Pink Floyd album, even if it is sandwiched between the giants of "Meddle" and "Dark Side of the Moon". Today we're joined by ANOTHER member of Rockford band, The Bitter Ends, Stephen L'Heureux!!! Mark welcomes 90s thriller lover Tarik Flannagan back to the podcast to discuss the jaw-dropping, stiletto-stabbing, roommate-fighting film Single White Female for its 30th anniversary this month. They just can't get enough of women fighting each other, and Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh do it so well! The Barbet Schroeder-directed movie - which feels part Lifetime, part noir, part erotica, part slasher - was released on August 14, 1992 and short red haircuts were never the same. What would you do if your weird new roomie stole your look?

Two trashy urban thrillers from the 1990's are about to turn 30 and gratefully, they feature top-flight talent! In Unlawful Entry, Kurt Russell and Madeline Stowe play a mild-mannered couple who become the focus of an increasingly unhinged police officer played by Ray Liotta – RIP. ☹ And in Single White Female, Bridget Fonda stars as fashionable Manhattanite who just broke up with her cheating boyfriend and is now seeking a new roommate in her swank apartment – enter Jennifer Jason Leigh's Hedra who at first seems nice but proves increasingly……let's say clingy. :o Both films pretty much follow a time-tested formula around this time which we also saw in movies like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and Sleeping With the Enemy….and yes ALL of these types of thrillers were trashy but several of them were also fun.
If you're anything like us, you've watched the Little Women film adaptations looking for the props and pieces that really bring the book to life–the vivid renderings of your own thoughtfully-imagined ephemera. Barbara Heller worked on movie set designs for feature films for many years, bringing all kinds of stories to life through location scouting and other roles. Then, she was rereading Pride and Prejudice when she had a sudden and visceral desire to hold characters' letters to each other in her own hands. She set out to find the right artists, paper, and materials to make that dream come true. After the success of her edition of Pride and Prejudice, Barbara turned her focus to Little Women, another novel that uses letters within the story. Again, she worked with artists to bring these pieces of writing into removable replicas that are tucked into the book itself. The reader feels the thrill of unfolding a letter as if they are from real, dear friends. In this episode, Barbara discusses the research, process, and design behind these familiar letters, now turned into beloved works of art. Barbara Heller's career in film and television encompasses finding furnishings and props for many shows including The Americans and When They See Us; location managing films for Francis Coppola, Nancy Meyers, and Barbet Schroeder; and directing award-winning short films that have played at festivals around the world (Cannes, Berlin, Sundance). To satisfy her curiosity, she reported on why hotels fold the end of the toilet paper into a point for NPR. She graduated from Brown University with a degree in English Literature and lives with her son in New York City.
CAGE UNCAGED: FILM FLAM FATALE**BONUS EPISODE**Another bonus episode covering a corner of Cage's career that has been under-represented thus far in Cage Uncaged! This week we tackle the fertile cinematic era between Moonstruck (1987) and Leaving Las Vegas (1995), when Cage would appear as often in quirky indies as studio fare before he became a superstar Oscar Winner. This week we look into a few so-called neo noirs, a popular trend at the time before Tarrantino came along and made every crime story ironic and referential. The trend may have begun nine years earlier with the film debut of the Coen Bros., BLOOD SIMPLE (which we will cover as a double bill with Raising Arizona next episode!). RED ROCK WEST (1993) is directed by John Dahl from a script by Dahl and his brother (or a guy with the same last name). Cage plays an everyman drifter with a bum knee who is mistaken for a hired killer in a speed bump of a town in rural Wyoming. Twists and turns ensue with Dennis Hopper showing up with a knife and fork ready to cut up and chew scenery. Lara Flynn Boyle, JT Walsh and Dwight Yoakam round out a small, but crack, cast that ooze a definitive sense of early 90s style. Two years later in Barbet Schroeder's remake of KISS OF DEATH (1995), Cage plays the villain to David Caruso's career as Caruso haplessly attempted to be a legitimate A-list leading man. With a screenplay by pod fave Richard Price and a supporting cast that includes Helen Hunt, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Rappaport, Stanley Tucci, Kevin Corrigan, Hope Davis, Phillip Baker-Hall, and all-time fave Cage costar Ving Rhames, this movie had the look of a brilliantly cast, high end studio classic. But... it has since disappeared so deep into the memory hole that certain members of the pod *may* have had to resort to pirating it to even be able to watch it in 2021. Pirating hurts artists, don't forget. Was it the movie itself or did 1995 audiences get it wrong? How can we blame Tarrantino? Find out! We actually disagree a LOT on this movie.REMAINING CAGE FILMS: PIG, RAISING ARIZONA, WILLY'S WONDERLAND, MANDY. DEEP BACKGROUND FILMS: BLOOD SIMPLE, UNDER THE BLACK RAINBOW. THEME SONG: HOWLING FANTODS.
Murder by Numbers imdb.com/title/tt0264935/ "Two gifted high school students execute a "perfect" murder - then become engaged in an intellectual contest with a seasoned homicide detective." Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpXHr24bq_Q Police song the title is based on: youtube.com/watch?v=gOB1ZFo-GKM Baby-faced Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt play wannabe high school killers in Barbet Schroeder's Murder by Numbers. Sandra Bullock plays a brilliant but damaged police detective who has personal reasons for solving the murder. Cassandra from Cassandra Explains it All (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cassandra-explains-it-all/id1541096204) tells us a delightfully thirsty story about Adam in High School that derails the entire episode.
