Welcome to Twice 5 Miles Radio. I'm your host, James Navé, and today, I'm joined by screenwriter, actress, and documentary filmmaker Angela Shelton for a wide-ranging conversation that's as bold as she is. This is Angela's second visit to the show, and if there's one thing I admire about her, it's her fearless honesty. She has no hesitation in saying what's on her mind, whether it's about the clutter on her kitchen counter or heavier topics like the politics of sex trafficking and the aftermath of last year's floods in Western North Carolina. She believes developers are using the floods as an excuse for a massive land grab; it's a point worth exploring. We also touch on faith and perspective. Angela says Jesus is her boyfriend—someone she can always count on. I see God more as “The Infinite,” something less human and more abstract. That's where our conversation takes its twists and turns, from rituals and daily habits that keep us grounded to the unflinching realities of the world around us. Angela's perspective on sex trafficking is incredibly personal—she believes it's time for ordinary people to step in, become investigators, and take action. It's a controversial notion that forces you to think and question where you stand. Our visit is more than an interview—it explores ideas and attitudes that challenge the status quo. Whether or not you agree with everything we discuss, Angelia brings a fire to the conversation that's impossible to ignore.

In Basketball there is a type of player that comes along once or twice in a generation that they call a Unicorn. As you might guess the Unicorn is unique, mainly because they can do a variety of things that haven't been done before. They stand out in a sport where there are a lot of talented and versatile performers. My guest today, Angela Shelton, fits the definition of a Second City Unicorn, having accomplished things that no one else in the Sixty plus years of the theater's existence has achieved. Her Second City experience started when she opened the first ever show at the Second City Detroit in 1993. After writing four shows there she moved north to the Second city Toronto where she became only the second African American performer in that theaters 20 plus year history (more on that later). Having worked at Two different theaters in two different countries is enough to Put Angela into Rare air, but she was barely half way done as she then moved to Chicago writing shows on both the ETC and Mainstage, making her the only person to open a show on Three Second city Stages. And if you are keeping score, you've figured out she's also the only person to open a resident company show on FOUR Second City stages. I am thrilled to welcome the unicorn that is Angela Shelton.

Twice 5 Miles Radio welcomes filmmaker, record executive, and award-winning filmmaker Angela Shelton to the microphone. In this conversation, titled The Power of the Mystical Yes, Angela Shelton discusses some of the reasons why she believes in the power of the mystical yes. You might be wondering why such a title The Power of the Mystical Yes. You might be thinking, why say mystical? Why not simply say yes and be done with it? That's a good question. Since Angela is an activist in the arenas around domestic abuse issues, it makes sense that discussing how to say Yes to the things you want would be essential to our conversation. Even though Angela comes from a background of domestic abuse, she has successfully taken the ebbs and flows of her experiences and turned them into a successful career in the entertainment business. One of the reasons for Angela's tremendous success is because she understands when to say yes, and on the flip side, she also understands when to say no. As you may have already discovered, sometimes a firm no turns into a mystical yes. So why The Power of Mystical Yes? Well, this might sound a little simplistic, but hey, it's fun to say Yes. On a deeper note, when you say Yes to things you thought you might never be able to do like Angela has done so often in her life, you'll soon learn your range is much greater than you ever imagined. Put another way, when you say yes, you get a lot of stuff in your life. In this conversation, you'll learn a bit about Angela's professional recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee. She talks at length about the award-winning documentary film she made titled Searching for Angela Shelton. In the movie, Angela travels around and meets a whole bunch of Angela Sheltons all over America. You learn how Angela used the mystical yes's power to get her other movies, Tumbleweeds and The Hammer, in the canon on the screen. Both films have won many prizes. So, if you like the idea of having the mystical yes in your life, then you will enjoy no end listening to this conversation with Angela Shelton.
If you are Angela Shelton (and if you listen you can learn why anyone can be Angela Shelton), you can be the person that says “I get s%^* done, I keep moving forward, and I live happily ever after no matter what happens to me.” Join me as Angela takes us on a ride through her life saying yes to almost everything that comes her way, and spreading a message of kindness, compassion, and humor.

Become a patron to help us share 101 episodes! https://www.patreon.com/healthatshit The mayor of Asheville, NC made April 29th Angela Shelton Day in honor of all survivors. As filmmaker Angela discovered, 70% of the Angela Sheltons she found had survived child sexual abuse, rape and/or domestic violence and they all had healed, moved on, left abusive situations, put themselves through school, got sober and she finished her film. To be an "Angela Shelton" represents those who not only survive and break the silence, but also break the cycle of abuse and heal the world. In the words of nurse Angela Shelton in Florida, "Angela Sheltons do good hard things in the world." We can all be "Angela Shelton!" Aly had the brilliant idea that we video chat Angela Sheltons for Angela Shelton Day! This was very last minute and seeing that it has been two decades, not all emails or social profiles were the same. So calling all Angela Sheltons, let's do this again! We are proud to be "Angela Sheltons."
In Episode 5 Andy “Doc” Dixon and George “The Hammer” Martin talk about prison reform with writer/director Angela Shelton. We hope you find the discussions provoking, from private prison corporations and their roots in slavery to wounded people needing a confessional. We know there is a problem. Now we can begin to make the change. We hope this episode opens your heart and mind. SPOILER ALERT - George is alive and talking! In Episode 4 George shares all kinds of stories with writer/director Angela Shelton including how the prison system messed up his paperwork and had him in as a blind white dude. (Now that’s some real fake news!) George shares fantastic BOXING stories and how he sent a letter to John Tate’s manager Ace Miller to tell him to send his best in there. George was arrested right after he turned 18 for burglary and got a 40 year sentence for robbery. Inside he became a boxer and is to this day undefeated. He humbly admits that he never saw the goodness in himself that others did, even after he knocked out everyone. He shares about his relationship with his transgender cellmate Crystal. “I was the only one on the compound holding hands. And then other dudes started doing the same thing. The rec would say, ‘Everybody want to be George Martin.’” George shares how he stopped judging after being inspired by Crystal. “She inspired me about a lot of things. She was dead on that Bible, strictly from the Bible. She said, ‘I’m a woman trapped in a man’s body.’” George admits that’s what made him quit judging others. Our original song HEART, BABY! shared throughout was written by Andy Doc Dixon and Angela Shelton and performed by Jackson Rathbone. SCORE composed by Jay Weigel. https://thehammertruestory.com/episode-4-george
*SPOILER ALERT* Some scenes from the movie THE HAMMER and conversations give away some gold! For those who have not seen the movie yet, you might want to save these episodes. For our fans who have seen it, you will LOVE these. Writer/director Angela Shelton interviews Andy Doc Dixon AND the real George "The Hammer" Martin about the divine elements of this film, their lives in and out of prison and the one scene in the film The Hammer that they both have the hardest time watching. We have an idea to get GEORGE online to teach us boxing while we’re in quarantine, even if just for a workout. Get ready, we had this idea so that means it’s gonna happen. We also share what we recently learned was the reason we were not accepted into any of the big festivals - it’s a shocker that we never would have seen coming! She reminds us as adults one of the most important things you can do to protect your children is to eliminate 1 on 1 encounters with teachers, counselors, clergy, coaches, and even some family members and consider going deeper when a child or teens behavior seems “ rebellious “ or changes!
