If you find yourself constantly maintaining peace, prioritizing others' feelings over your own, and seeking your mother's approval, you may be experiencing ‘the good daughter syndrome.' Over time, this role can quietly wear you down, erode your mental well-being, sense of self, and energy to the point where you no longer recognize yourself. In this episode, I sit down with psychotherapist, author, daughter, and mother, Katherine Fabrizio, who coined the term "The Good Daughter Syndrome" and wrote an insightful book on the topic. She also recounts stories of patients who have dealt with similar mothers with some exhibiting borderline personality disorder or an emotional immature parent. I must confess, I'm a recovering people pleaser. For years, I bent over backward to keep the peace in my marriage. I avoided conflict like the plague and ensured everyone else was happy even at the expense of my happiness. Where did it all start? In my childhood.Does this sound familiar? If you've ever felt like you're constantly putting others first, afraid to say no, or sacrificing your needs to gain approval, you're not alone. And it's time to understand where that stems from and how to change it.Today I'll delve into a topic that resonates with many of us—people pleasing. In this episode, I'll share: My personal journey to overcoming people pleasing behavior. What causes us to become people pleasers? How our coping mechanisms in our childhood can lead to people-pleasing habits as adults. How low self-esteem, negative experiences and trauma can lead to people-pleasing habits. The 8 common signs of a people pleaser and how setting boundaries can help you recover too. 10 ways you can stop being a people pleaser. And somatic practices that will help you break free so you can develop stronger boundaries. And I share a couple of my favorite quotes from Brené Brown and Glennon Doyle. So start prioritizing yourself and tune into this episode. These amazing ladies are the founders of The Inspired Being, and we had a fantastic conversation about the benefits of yoga, meditation, and self-care.In this episode, you'll learn:Linda and Chelsea's unique journeys into the world of yoga and how they found a sense of home and embodiment through their practice. How yoga connects the body, mind, and spirit, helping us feel stronger, more balanced, and better overall. What are Pranayama breath and Ujjayi breath, and how to meditate even when you don't think you can? Simple ways to incorporate yoga and meditation into daily life, even with just a few minutes each day.The benefits of Linda and Chelsea's retreats and how they offer a deeper connection with ourselves.Let's slow down together for this inspiring episode where we dive into the world of yoga, mindfulness, and self-care through a yoga lens. How are you doing? Like really doing?I don't know about you, but I was in need of a break. I'm not one to sit still for very long and that hasn't always served me well but I'm learning to honor what my body needs and this week, that's giving myself a break. So this episode will be short and sweet. But there's stil a message in there for you.Our world rewards productivity and taking breaks often feels like a luxury if you even allow yourself to take one, but it shouldn't. If you have ever pushed yourself to the point of exhaustion or tied your worth to your achievements or to-do list, it's time to take a look at that mindset. Trying to keep that pace will only leave you drained and disconnected from what truly matters. Take it from someone who has learned the hard way!So when my plan for this episode took a turn, I looked at is as a sign to take a break and I'm encouraging you to do the same. And Mother's Day weekend is upon us so what better time to focus on the importance of slowing down, rejuvenating ourselves, and nurturing our relationships not our to-do lists. Tune in and give yourself the gift of time because you deserve it!XO,LaurieClick here to learn about my Women's Mammoth Retreat.
