"It's so easy and quantifiable. You eliminate any type of excuse or entitlement, and you show up and do the work. That's seriously as simple as it can get. Everybody needs to stand up, look themselves in the mirror, and go, ‘Okay, I'm in this position in my life because of me. I need to take full accountability for where I am.'" - James Lawrence Why is adversity key in creating resilience? What must you get right before you begin a big endeavor? Why did James add an extra triathlon after he completed 100 straight, even though he was injured? How did James approach the 50-straight and the 100-straight triathlon attempts differently? The Iron Cowboy For most people, completing a full-distance triathlon would be a crowning life achievement. James Lawrence has done hundreds of them, including 101 in a row. On consecutive days. For anyone counting, that's 140.6 miles a day, every day for 3 and a half months, for a total of 14,060 miles. James has earned the nickname "The Iron Cowboy" for the cowboy hat he wears during Ironman Triathlons. But it also reflects his maverick spirit and the frontier toughness he brings to all his endeavors. After all, who would even think of doing 50 triathlons in 50 states over 50 days, let alone have the guts to do it all with five kids in tow? A Solid Foundation One thing that James says is key to have when you're attempting difficult things is a strong ethos. You have to know the reason WHY you're going on a tough journey, and you have to believe it. That gives you something to fall back on, and it keeps you from giving up, even when you're at your lowest. As James puts it: "You will not make rational decisions when you're broken mentally, physically, when you're fatigued. You have to say, ‘Okay, I'm not of sound mind, but what are my core values? What do I stand for?' Really commit and buy into those statements, and then every question you have on a tough journey becomes very easy to answer because you just revert back to my ethos and what I stand for." No Excuses James doesn't believe that he's got a special gift that makes him unique. He thinks that everyone has greatness within them. So why is James the one pushing the boundaries of what's possible? If you ask him, it's because of accountability. "It's so easy and quantifiable. You eliminate any type of excuse or entitlement, and you show up and do the work. That's seriously as simple as it can get. Everybody needs to stand up, look themselves in the mirror, and go, ‘Okay, I'm in this position in my life because of me. I need to take full accountability for where I am.' Once you can get to the realization that you're taking accountability for where you are in your life — only then can you start to make the changes that you need to." Key takeaways: Take your time. The biggest reason people fail on big goals is they get impatient and want it done quickly. Let yourself heal. After you finish a period of struggle and growth, you need time to recuperate physically, mentally, and emotionally. Be comfortable with being uncomfortable. James hates running! But to build healthy relationships or achieve your goals, you need to do things that you don't want to do. Readings: Deuteronomy 4:1–2,6–8 Psalm 15:2–5 James 1:17–18, 21–22, 27 Mark 7:1–8, 14–15, 21–23 Today's Gospel casts Jesus in a prophetic light as one having authority to interpret God's law. Jesus' quotation from Isaiah today is ironic (see Isaiah 29:13). In observing the law, the Pharisees honor God by ensuring that nothing unclean passes their lips. In this, however, they've turned the law inside out, making it a matter of simply performing certain external actions. The gift of the law, which we hear God giving to Israel in today's First Reading, is fulfilled in Jesus' Gospel, which shows us the law's true meaning and purpose (see Matthew 5:17). The law, fulfilled in the Gospel, is meant to form our hearts, to make us pure, able to live in the Lord's presence. The law was given that we might live and enter into the inheritance promised to us—the kingdom of God, eternal life. Israel, by its observance of the law, was meant to be an example to surrounding nations. As James tells us in today's Epistle, the Gospel was given to us that we might have new birth by the Word of truth. By living the Word we've received, we're to be examples of God's wisdom to those around us, the “first fruits” of a new humanity. This means we must be “doers” of the Word, not merely hearers of it. As we sing in today's Psalm and hear again in today's Epistle, we must work for justice, taking care of our brothers and sisters and living by the truth God has placed in our hearts. The Word given to us is a perfect gift. We should not add to it through vain and needless devotions. Nor should we subtract from it by picking and choosing which of His laws to honor. “Hear me,” Jesus says in today's Gospel. Today, we're called to examine our relationship to God's law. Is the practice of our religion a pure listening to Jesus, a humble welcoming of the Word planted in us and able to save our souls? Or are we only paying lip service?

“Life Situations” May Cause a Focus on Yourself; but a Prayer Focused on Yourself and Not Considering Others' Needs Constrains Your Prayer Relationship with God MESSAGE SUMMARY: When you are experiencing a "life situation" AND you stop just focusing on yourself and your situation, then you can enter prayerful communion with God. In your personal relationship with God and your communion with God, He will tell you how to pray for your "situation". As James tells us in James 1:5-6: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.". Pray always; be consistent in your prayers. Do not give up on God; do not doubt the power of your prayer; and pray in faith. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I thank you that you are working even when I am sleeping. Teach me to respect the built-in rhythms of life, and to live from a place of deep rest in you. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 127). Zondervan. As James continues to show that strife comes from our lusts, he now makes a very bold statement that is not well received by many. We live in a society that does not like having sin pointed and tries to downplay sin. We need to see sin the way God sees our sin. We must choose godliness over worldliness.
Jesse invites the author behind one of his favorite books, Atomic Habits, to join the podcast and talk about what he learned about setting good habits, breaking bad ones, and developing environments and systems conducive to productive habits. As James says, the things you do and accomplish in life are essentially lagged indicators of your habits. So building good habits slowly, methodically, and thoughtfully can result in big rewards down the road. As James continues to give us the marks of authentic faith, he shifts us to two pictures of wisdom. The truth of the matter is that we all live according to some code of wisdom. Whether you get wisdom from Hollywood, friends, Google or a religious system, we're all on a quest to find wisdom that will lead us to a happier life. James says that there are two types of wisdom: worldly wisdom (3:14-16) which leads to chaos (4:1-3) and godly wisdom (3:13) that leads to a harvest of righteousness (3:17-18). James gives us a list of characteristics that mark each type of wisdom and the implicit challenge is clear: you need wisdom from Jesus, rather than wisdom from the world. Godly wisdom produces a gospel-centric life that will allow us to flourish now and in the future!
As James continues to flesh out his premise that authentic faith in Jesus leads to real fruit in our lives, he begins to talk about the power of words. The old saying we all heard as kids “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” is one of the biggest lies ever told. Words destroy marriages, cripple children, divide churches, and drive nations into war. But words can also bring life, healing and hope. Jesus teaches that words reveal the heart. So the key isn't just guarding our words, it has to be change at the heart level. We don't need a tongue doctor, we need a heart doctor! And change that deep only comes by walking with Jesus and being empowered by the Holy Spirit to speak words of life into those around us. This is good fruit that flows from authentic faith!

As James wraps up his letter, he emphasizes the importance of prayer and faith. Throughout the Book of James series, we have received practical teaching and instruction to help us grow and live purpose-filled lives for God's glory, but we cannot walk it out in our own strength. We need the power and presence of God, so we must pray! And we need faith in order to break through the natural into the supernatural. If we press into prayer and build our faith, we will see God do great things in our lives and the world around us. Ethos is a life-giving community committed to keeping Jesus at its Center. We have all met the guy that sets himself up as the expert and standard by which all others are judged. As James continues the thought of faith without works is dead, he shows how a "dead faith" can lead to one being filled with pride and believing they set the standard by which all others must be measured. We must remember that Jesus is the standard not you.
An IFB church in Charlevoix, MI live stream them kicking out 2 young men of the church who had been talking to Pastor Phil Green about King James Onlyism. After the Pastor was unable to convince these 2 men that there was any Biblical basis to KJVO, he makes them resign publicly on the live Church's live stream. The Church Split recorded the live stream (as it was taken offline after we commented on the video). This is a perfect example of the legalism in the IFB and a prime example of what we fight against here: tertiary issues that are elevated to a breaking-fellowship topic. As James says, "these things ought not to be so".
How many times do you find yourself relying on other people or external factors to feel happiness, worth, or success? The truth is, my husband James recently pointed out that I can fall into the trap of doing that from time to time— I know I'm not alone. Many females (especially entrepreneurs) get too caught up in things out of their control. They let those things dictate their feelings of happiness and worth and use them to measure their success. What if I told you the key to changing this, the key to increasing genuine feelings of happiness and worthiness, lies in the present moment? (Hint: It does.) Highly driven people are often hyper-focused on the future, thinking of all they still need to do to achieve their future vision. The result? They forget to pay attention to the steps they can take to become that future version of themself. They make themselves wrong for the space between where they are and where they want to be. Or they find themselves held back by the past, using it as evidence as to why they can't achieve their desires. Either way, they're missing out on an imperative component of life, happiness, and success— the present moment. That's why I'm so grateful to have James taking over this episode to teach you all about developing more presence. The truth is, feelings of happiness, worthiness, and success thrive in the present moment. Why? Because it's where we are. It's what we can control. When you're more present, you can start generating feelings of worthiness because you can recognize how successful you are now. Then you can create more happiness. If you're someone who easily gets stuck in the past or caught up in the future, the good news is it is possible to change that thought pattern. Follow along in this episode as James takes you through his tips for being more present in your day-to-day life. You'll want to take notes as he dives into the different facets of consciousness that significantly impact your progress, performance, and success. He shares numerous questions that you can ask yourself to help determine where you're currently at and how you can continue to move forward with more consciousness and intentionality. He even walks you through a meditation practice that can help you feel more rooted in the present moment. This episode is all about being aware of yourself and your circle of control. As James points out, true progress can only come about once you take ownership of recognizing your worth and generating your happiness. The moment we give that control to external forces, we're limiting our capacity for success and fulfillment. Remember, you are in control of your response to life. Once you recognize that, nothing gets to throw you off track. In turn, you can feel happier, more worthy, and ultimately more successful. If you're ready to free yourself from the shackles of the past, take a step back from the overwhelming notion of the future, or simply take your happiness back into your own hands, be sure to press play on this one. In this episode… [05:22] The power of intrinsic motivation. [09:24] Why a lot of people don't feel worthy or successful. [11:25] The emotional pandemic and what happens when we're not present. [13:34] Tips for being more present. [16:06] How to be more conscious of your thoughts, feelings, and energy. [21:00] Being conscious of your behaviors and others. [25:19] Are you conscious of the progress you are making? (Why you should be.) [28:45] The consciousness of the moment. [30:30] Being conscious of your intuition. [32:18] The importance of loving yourself. [36:50] James walks you through his practice for being more present. Quotes: “The moment I started progressing was the moment that I took responsibility for recognizing my worthiness for generating my happiness and for showing up with a successful attitude.” -James Williams “When we're not present, we're not taking action in the one place that we can actually progress. If we're stuck, we're constantly thinking about what next, what next, what next? How are we ever going to register and be grateful for and feel worthy and accomplished for the things that we are achieving now? And if we're constantly stuck in the past, how are we ever going to generate the courage to do those big, scary things that we really want in our future?” -James Williams “You must measure what's working [and] what's not working so that you can do more of what's working and less of what's not working. That's how you progress your business. And it's the same with the business of you.” -James Williams “The more problems you can find, the more solutions you have the opportunity to find. And the faster you will progress. So the perspective shift is [to] be excited to measure your progress. Be excited to figure out how many steps forward and how many steps back you've taken so that you can get information to take action on.” -James Williams “You are your number one client. That's a contract for life because how well you serve that client— that inner you— is a reflection of how well you can show up [and] how successful you will be.” -James Williams Links & Resources: Stay up to date with the latest episodes: Follow the I Heart My Life Show on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/i-heart-my-life-show/id1569047758 Subscribe to the I Heart My Life Show on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/1Zw6fI37FrfVjZMXlMiZZ6 Download Jame's “3 Rooms Theory” practice for becoming more present here. https://thegrowthedge.com/downloads (It's FREE!) A Sermon for the Fourth Sunday after Easter St. John 16:5-15 & St. James 1:17-21 by William Klock Our lessons today continue to carry us through the Easter season. In our Gospel we see the story moving us gradually from the events of Holy Week and Easter to the Ascension and to Pentecost and in our Epistle St. James points us to the practical outworking, to the implications for the Christian life of what Jesus was explain to his disciples. Our Gospel today isn’t the easiest passage to understand, but it helps to have a sense of where the Jewish people were coming from in the First Century. There were times when Israel prospered and flourished, but most of her history involved difficult times, whether that was her slavery in Egypt, internal conflicts, conflicts with her pagan neighbours, or her exile to Babylon. Through these difficult times, God’s people cried out to him, whether it was the nation as a whole crying out for God to give them justice in the face of wicked enemies or the righteous within Israel crying out for God to judge the wicked kings or priests or false prophets in her midst. God’s people pleaded for their day in God’s court. They knew he was the just Judge, they knew his promises, and they knew that if and, more importantly when, they had the opportunity to stand before him, he would hear their case, that he would hear their evidence, and that he would judge rightly—that he would find his people (or the faithful remnant among them) to be in the right, that he would vindicate them, and that he would punish their enemies and set things to right. Through the Psalms and here and there in the Prophets we get glimpses of the heavenly courtroom and hear Israel pleading with the Lord to let her stand there and to hear her case. And things were no different in Jesus’ day. The people pleaded with the Lord to hear their case against the Romans, or against the corrupt Herodians, the Romans’ puppet local rulers, or against the men who had corrupted the priesthood and the temple. This desperate longing for God’s justice is what Jesus draws on in the Upper Room as he speaks to his disciples, preparing them for what’s to come. Let me read part of our Gospel to you again and see if you can hear it. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. Jesus is telling his friends that he’s going to have to leave them and this leaves them with all sorts of questions. The Messiah was supposed to set everything to rights, but how is that going to happen if he leaves? And now Jesus is saying that the problems are going to continue. His people will face rejection and persecution. But he also promises that they will know the vindication that Israel had always longed for. This is, in fact, just the reason why he’s got to leave. You see, they thought that the Messiah would be the one standing as their advocate when they had their day in God’s court. That he would be their lawyer—to put it in our terms. They expected Jesus to be their Perry Mason. If he were to leave, who would make their case? But Jesus is going to do something even better. Jesus will send the Helper. The Greek word is parakletos. Jesus is referring to the Holy Spirit, but the word he uses here refers to one who will stand as a mediator or intercessor or an advocate. The Spirit will stand before the Judge like Perry Mason to make the case. But here’s the critical thing: Jesus the Messiah will by the one in the dock. He will be the one on trial. And this is why Jesus had to leave them. He was arrested, falsely accused, and unjustly executed. The world issued a verdict against Jesus: he was a false messiah, he was in the wrong. But by raising him from the dead, his Father overturned that verdict and declared that he is, indeed, the Messiah. And the disciples were overjoyed to have him back—but then he had to leave again. Why? They need their Messiah with them, so they think, to set things to rights. But, no, he’s got to leave again. Why? Because his vindication is not complete. Jesus’ vindication is completed in his ascension, as he returns to the Father to sit as his side as Lord of all. And so Jesus will be raised from the dead and he will ascend to his throne. And this these things will be Exhibit A and Exhibit B when the Spirit makes his case in court. The Spirit, Jesus says, will bring the evidence to convict the world of sin. First, the Spirit will hold up the world’s rejection of Jesus himself and its continuing pursuit of its own values and agendas as evidence. Second, the Spirit will bring evidence to convict the false justice of the world. Most translations make this already difficult passage more difficult by translating dikaiosyne as “righteousness” when “justice” suits the passage far better. The world believes itself to be just or in the right. We see this supremely in the false conviction and execution of Jesus. But the world’s verdict on Jesus was overturned that first Easter and God’s verdict in regards to Jesus is confirmed at his ascension. Third, the Spirit will bring the evidence to show that the world’s judgment or condemnation of Jesus and his people is wrong. Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension reveal the defeat of the “ruler of this world”—of the satan, of sin, and of death. In short, what the Lord has promised and what Israel had longed for is about to be fulfilled in and by Jesus himself and will be known by those who have united themselves to him in faith. Brothers and Sisters, here’s the wonderful thing here. Jesus is the one who will stand in the dock to face the judge. The Spirit will make his case. The judge will find him—from our perspective today, had already found him—to be in the right. And then we find out that Jesus invites us sinners to join him in the dock as the Father issues his verdict. We have done nothing. Jesus has done it all. But when we by faith step into the dock and identify ourselves with Jesus, his vindication becomes our vindication. He reality becomes our sure and certain hope. Jesus exhorts his friends in verses 14-15: He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. “He will take what is mine and declare it to you.” But, Brothers and Sisters, it’s more than the verdict in favour Jesus that the Spirit declares and passes on to us. Let’s look at our Epistle again. Again, this is James 1:17-21. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. The work of the Spirit that Jesus describes in the Gospel is not limited to the heavenly courtroom or to esoteric knowledge about Jesus. This should be obvious if we remember Israel’s story. Her relationship with the Lord had always been meant to work out in her life and her life was meant to be a witness to the world of life in the presence of God. If the Spirit will come alongside Jesus’ people to see them vindicated in the heavenly court, and if the Spirit is to give them understanding into just what it is that Jesus has done by his death and resurrection, St. James knew that the Spirit will also cause the life of God to well up in this new Israel that is rooted in Jesus. James is well-known for his stress on the works that necessarily accompany faith. God doesn’t merely save his people from sin and death, he saves them to be his stewards. It seems likely that when today’s Epistle was chosen to be paired with our passage from John 16, an association was meant to be made between Jesus’ promise of the Spirit and James’ statement that “every perfect gift is from above”. While James does not speak directly of the Spirit, the gifts from above that he does address are those conferred by the Spirit and his exhortation here closely parallels Jesus’ exhortation in the Gospel. James speaks first of the wisdom God bestows on those who ask (v. 5) and then, after urging his readers to stand firm in the face of persecution (v. 12), he reminds them that God is not the source of our temptation (vv. 13-14). Just the opposite, in fact: God only sends us good gifts. In our fallen state, our disordered desires lead us to sin and sin to death, but God has spoken his “word of truth”—his logos, surely a reference both to Jesus and to God’s word in a more general sense—to bring about a work of new creation in us. If we in Jesus, the new creation that has begun in him is beginning in us as well. Even as we face trials and struggle against sin, the firstfruits of God’s new world are manifest in our lives. But Friends, this leaves us with a choice. Will we pursue sin or will be pursue the life of God? In the heavenly court we have been declared by God to be in the right, because we have united ourselves to Jesus in faith. His vindication is our vindication. The Spirit has given witness on our behalf. But woe to the one who names Jesus while manifesting anger, filthiness, and wickedness. Try as we might to claim the vindication of Jesus for ourselves, a life characterised by wickedness rather than the Spirit reveals any such claim to be superficial. As James will write in 2:20, faith without works is dead. Brothers and Sisters, when we are united with Jesus the Spirit not only makes the Father’s verdict that Jesus is in the right our verdict, but he also does a work of transformation—of regeneration and renewal in us that gives evidence of that verdict. The evidence that we have taken hold of Jesus in faith is God’s new creation welling up in us as we manifest the fruit of the indwelling Spirit and produce good works. And so, even as we grasp Jesus in faith, we also pray in faith as we do in our Collect today, for grace—for grace that will rightly order our sinful and unruly hearts, for grace that we will love what he commands, and for grace that we will desire what he has promised. Let us pray: Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the many and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
As James writes these Christians Jews scattered, he starts with how to handle trials. Too often we do not view trials as God working in our lives, but rather view them as hindrances. When a trial comes, we often are quick to pray for deliverance from the trail instead of thanking God for loving us enough to teach us in the trial. We must have all joy in trials.
1 Kings 3:1-2 ESV Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt. He took Pharaoh's daughter and brought her into the city of David until he had finished building his own house and the house of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem. 2 The people were sacrificing at the high places, however, because no house had yet been built for the name of the Lord. PRAGMATISM Taking Pharaoh's daughter in a marriage alliance was no doubt a political measure of Solomon in order to strengthen his kingdom's influence. A pragmatic move to foster relationships with the most powerful of his neighbors. But, should political advancements be considered even in violation to the laws of God? Was not Solomon charged by David to ‘walk in God's ways and to keep his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses'?[1 Kings 2:3] “God had strictly forbidden his people to form alliances with heathenish women, lest they should lead their hearts away from him into idolatry. Let us hear the law: Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son; for they will turn away thy son from following me, etc. Exodus 34:16; Deuteronomy 7:3, Deuteronomy 7:4. Now Solomon acted in direct opposition to these laws; and perhaps in this alliance were sown those seeds of apostasy from God and goodness in which he so long lived, and in which he so awfully died.” [Adam Clarke] It's not surprising that the world operates prejudiced towards pragmatism. In an environment of ‘survival to the fittest', pragmatism thrives. As somebody said, “Hindi na ngayon panahon ni Kristo kung di sa mga listo.” What works at the moment may not be right. In other words, the end does not justify the means. Solomon may had found success in befriending the world. But, he estranged himself from God. As James said, “You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” [Jas 4:4] At the end of the day, he had to settle this with Jehovah. Doing what is right and pleasing to God must be our pursuit. It may not be practical. In fact, it may cause us to receive oppositions. However, let us remember that those who honor God , He will honor someday. [1 Sam 2:30] ------------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram
1 Kings 2:1-4 ESV When David's time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, 2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, 3 and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, 4 that the Lord may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.' SHOW YOURSELF A MAN These "last words" of King David were especially significant. He charged Solomon, “Be strong, and show yourself a man.” Unlike David, Solomon grew up in the palace. David had fought ferocious animals as a shepherd, even killed a giant as a young lad. But, Solomon did not. What does it take for Solomon to become the man of God? He must be a man of courage.. And, this is qualified by tests and trials. A typhoon does not make a building strong, does it? It is proven strong if it stands after the storm. Thus “If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.” [Prov 24:10] As James articulated, “ Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” [Jas 1:2-4] What should he be courageous about? Solomon has to ‘keep the charge of the Lord his God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses. David's reference to "The Law of Moses," is in the very terminology of Deuteronomy 18:17-20. The conviction to uphold the truth at all cost is a demonstration of manliness in God. Lastly, there was a corresponding promise. Should David's sons ‘walk before God in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, David shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.' To preserve His kingship, Solomon has to uphold the truth in his heart faithfully. ------------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram
“Life Situations” May Cause a Focus on Yourself; but a Prayer Focused on Yourself and Not Considering Others Needs Constrains Your Prayer Relationship with God MESSAGE SUMMARY: When you are experiencing a "life situation" AND you stop just focusing on yourself and your situation, then you can enter prayerful communion with God. TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, Nothing compares with knowing. (Philippians 3:7f). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. (Philippians 4:14). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Ephesians 5:20-21; Romans 1:16-17; James 1:5-6; Psalms 109b:16-31. PODCAST EPISODE 40: James Dorey, scientist, PhD candidate, and re-discoverer of the native Pharohylaeus lactiferous bee species We do a lot of talking about the wonderous, superhero honeybee. However, Australia is home to a huge 1654 species of native bees that don't get anywhere near the attention they deserve. Coming in all shapes, sizes and colours, with a range of behaviours and living habits, native bees are fascinating, nuanced and mystifying creatures, even for beekeepers. In some ground-breaking news that's hot off the press just this week, an incredible re-discovery has been made in Queensland: a native bee species, Pharohylaeus lactiferous or the rare cloaked bee, was found for the first time in 100 years! So, I am completely thrilled to bring James Dorey – the scientist and PhD candidate who found the cloaked bee after its long hiding – to the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast for episode 40. As James described recently in his article on The Conversation, the cloaked bee (its name, “pharo” meaning “cloaked”), has three abdominal segments that overlay one another in a cloak formation. And as a bee wearing a big cloak might suggest, this mysterious little insect has always been tricky to find – between 1900 and 1923, two bee collectors found six specimens of P. lactiferous, but no more have been discovered until now. James describes: “I found the cloaked bee P. lactiferus during a major east coast sampling effort of more than 225 unique sites. The discovery, and what I learnt from it, helped me find more specimens at two additional sites. It also made me wonder why P. lactiferus had been missing for so long. Is it naturally rare, hard to find, or perhaps threatened?” Interestingly, the cloaked bee was found on two plants, both with fiery red flowers: the firewheel tree and the Illawarra flame tree. As bees don't see red, red plants are often pollinated by birds, and scientists therefore potentially don't sample this type of flora. Who knew, this would be where James would make his remarkable discovery. Tune in to hear James and I discuss the fascinating and rare cloaked bee, how James made his discovery, and the wonderous world of native bees! https://www.jamesdoreyphotography.com.au/
Welcome! As James, Tim, and Cheska continue through the first series of Terrace House, they recap episode 34 of BGND, titled "One Sided Love," in which Tim makes a crazy comparison between two current and former housemates, we talk about the two similar but contrasting dates, and James and Cheska argue over who is in the wrong in this growing situation between Hana and Daiki.
You know I love a good story! On this week's episode, I sat down with my dear friend James, as he takes us on his experiential journey through job loss, massive failures, and ultimately finding his true passion, power, and purpose! As James would say, "There really isn’t a choice; failure just really isn’t an option!"
Scripture Reading: Luke 18:1-8 Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. Luke 18:1 The widow in this parable has been called many things: troublesome, annoying, irritating, irksome, pesky. Yet Jesus applauds her for being persistent. Her relentless pursuit of justice eventually convinces the judge to help her, even though he doesn’t really care about her. Of course, Jesus isn’t suggesting that God is like the judge in this story, or that we will have to be irritating to get God’s attention. In fact, as Jesus points out, God is the opposite of the uncaring, unfair judge. Persistence in prayer, though, raises an important question about prayer itself. God reigns over the cosmos and pays attention to every detail, including even the hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30). So why would we need to pray at all? God knows all our needs, and his purposes and plans are set. Can we really, then, change God’s mind for a different outcome? There is no easy answer to this question, but we can affirm several things the Bible teaches. Yes, God reigns, and we can take great comfort in that. What’s more, God can use our prayers as a means to his ends. As James 5:16 says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Our prayers bring us into fellowship with God and align us with his will, and they play a role in bringing God’s righteous and just kingdom on earth. So let’s be persistent in prayer, trusting and believing that God hears and answers. Father, help us to pray and to keep praying for your kingdom to come, trusting you in all things. Amen.
On this week's episode, James explores the consequences of putting our grief on the back burner. If we let it sit for too long, will it burn? As James walks us through this idea of confronting the hard stuff, he imparts the tools we need to face the grief and let it go. We all have it in us. But sometimes we're not sure how to get it out -- how to express it -- how to unlock our kindness. And let's face it. If there's anything the world needs more of right now -- it's kindness, empathy and respect.Let's say you're White and you want to reach out to a Black friend, deeply affected by racial injustice. What should you say, or not say, to express your support? Or maybe you're a boss at a loss for words on how to encourage your employee to reach her potential. Where should you turn for advice? There are any number of tricky scenarios and relationships we must all navigate, hopefully without getting tripped up. My guest on this week's Our Voices Matter podcast is on a mission to help us all get it right, and bind the connections that make us human. As the Chief Encouragement Officer of EncourageX, James Brown and his team give us the language and the tools to say I see you -- I hear you -- you matter. In our polarized world, perhaps this is a place to start. Whatever your political persuasion, we are all hurting. We are all struggling. As James said in a recent LinkedIn post, "your people need you now more than ever". It's time to encourage strong.Support the show (http://patreon.com/OurVoicesMatterPodcast)
We can do a lot of damage with these tongues of ours. It's no wonder James describes it as a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father. And with it we curse people who are made in his image. As James wrote, "these things ought not to be so". This raises the question, how do we tame the tongue. I can tell you this. It doesn't happen through self-effort. I bet you've already discovered that truth. No, the tongue is tamed when it comes under the control of God's Spirit. If you want your words to build up and give grace to those who hear, walk in the Spirit. He will not only give you the words to say, but how to say them.
In this edition of "Sunday Morning with Love In Action," Ken talks about the importance of obedience. We must obey God’s Word. We must put it into action in our lives, not just listen to it. As James writes in James 1:22, "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." "Sunday Morning with Love In Action" airs every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on The Joy FM thanks to a generous donation from Weed Man.
As James is drawing to the close of his letter to the scattered believers, we take a moment to examine how NT letters were written, consider James’s situation, and work through the closing remarks with the letter framework in mind.
As James concludes his brief greeting, at the commencement of his epistle, he immediately lays down a great challenges to every believer in verse 2- My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations. The Believer's initial reaction might be one of confusion and consternation - how can difficulties be a source of Joy. James continues to explain why and how in the following verses--1. Rejoice In The Face Of Trials--2. Know The Reason For The Trials--3. The Perfect Results Of These Trials
https://slatestarcodex.com/2017/02/27/a-modern-myth/ 1. Eris A middle-aged man, James, had come on stage believing it was an audition for American Idol. It wasn’t. Out ran his ex-lover, Terri. “You said you loved me!” she said. “And then when I got pregnant, you disappeared! Twenty years, and you never even sent me a letter!” The crowd booed. As James tried to sputter a response, his wife ran onto the stage. “You cheating jerk!” she shouted at James. “You lying, cheating jerk! Twenty-five years we’ve been married, and I never…” She picked up a folding chair, tried to swing it at James. “Stop!” cried James’ teenage daughter Katie, joining in the fray. “Mom, Dad, stop it!”
Churches are full of hypocrites. Sadly that sentiment is too often true. Christians do not practice what they preach. Psalm 50 speaks to this issue. It demands a faith that acts, what the Bible refers to as faith and obedience. As James said, “faith, if it has no works is dead… show me your faith without the workds, and I will show you my faith by my works” (James 2:17-28).
Prayer Is a Bridge Over Today’s River of Fear Through Prayer in Faith, Without Doubt, and Asking God’s Help MESSAGE SUMMARY: Even when you are experiencing a "life situation", you can enter prayerful communion with God by NOT FOCUSING ON YOURSELF. In your communion with God, God will tell you how to pray for the "situation". As James tells us in James 1:5-6: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. Do not give up on God; do not doubt the power of your prayer; and pray in faith. TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Heartlessness. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit’s fruit of Kindness. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). [Comment: Evil Tongue] Friends of the Rosary, Wisdom comes from above. And wisdom, as St. James writes in his third letter of the New Testament, is peaceable, gentle, full of mercy, and good fruits. Here on earth, as we stumble we regrettably follow unspiritual, even demonic practices. One comes from the lack of control of our tongue. As James, the Apostle says our tongue is full of evil and deadly poison, especially when we curse people. Too many times, our tongue sets on fire the entire course of life. This is evil, contrary to our desired path to holiness. We must humbly ask for help from Heaven to avoid having a poisoned tongue. Podcast Name: Practicing the Art of Faithful PresenceEpisode 20: James S. Poore, II – A People Loving McDonald’s Owner/OperatorIn this episode, podcast host Dr. David Wright speaks with James S. Poore, II, an owner/operator of four McDonald’s restaurants in Indianapolis, Indiana. James explained that his earliest wish was to be a small business owner - a seed that was planted at his first job, a landscaping business.Following college where he played football on a full athletic scholarship, he began his professional career with Monsanto. During that time, he got his MBA at Indiana Wesleyan University. He left Monsanto to be a Vice President and Director of Marketing at a bank. All the while, he continued serving in his church, Eastern Star.As James likes to say, “it all starts at the church” because that is where he met his wife, grew tremendously in his faith and was initially invited to join the McDonald’s owner/operator business. He was teaching a class at church when a student approached him about the idea. From that point, it took four years before James and his wife Pam bought their first McDonalds restaurant.James also speaks about the source of his hope in life. As an African American man, the events of this year certainly have their impact on him and many others. James speaks about the support system that he has had all of his life – from his parents, to coaches, fellow players, aunts and uncles, pastors. They have all played a very important part in his life. So many people saw things in him that he did not see in himself. He has made a point of going back to those many people who have invested in his life to thank them. When speaking of the lessons he has learned in his business career, the number one value that has emerged for James is the importance of loving people. When you love people, it makes a world of difference. It is not just about what they can do for you, but who they are and wanting to help them. For the Poores, the McDonalds restaurants they own and the people they employ become their extended family.James explains the ins and outs of owning a McDonalds restaurant, the impact that COVID-19 has had upon their restaurants and how the owner/operators interface with corporate and the many McDonalds suppliers. With great passion, James speaks about the realities of the day when it comes to racial injustice. As a leader in Indianapolis, he gets asked often for advice from peers and youth. He is thankful for the businesses he owns that gives him a platform to be an influence and to have impact in his community. He speaks of the importance of having conversations between people who are different and holding to peaceful protests to make our voices heard. In the end, he believes that if we can focus on what we agree on, we can have a much better relationship with one another. It is also important to address educational and digital divides that have become highlighted during this pandemic.Learn more about James S. "Are you pitching today?" asked James's older brother, Jackson. James grinned. "Yep. And I'm gonna strike out all those guys." Jackson laughed. "I hope you're right." Jackson had recently gotten his driver's license and was taking his younger brother to the baseball park. As James talked about the upcoming game, Jackson smiled and nodded his head now and then. "I hope I get good enough to play in the major leagues someday! Wouldn't that be great?" asked James, eagerly turning to look at his big brother. He frowned. "Jackson, you're not paying attention to me! You don't even look at me when I'm talking to you." "No, but I hear you," Jackson assured him. "It's important for me to keep my eyes on the road and not be distracted. Dad always reminds me of that before letting me borrow the car." "Oh. I bet he reminds you of something the Bible says about driving too," said James. "Dad seems to find Bible verses for everything." Jackson laughed as he pulled into a parking space at the ball field. "Actually, Dad did say that driving is sort of like living for Jesus because it requires focus. Just like I need to keep my eyes on the road so I don't get in an accident, it's important for Christians to keep their eyes on Jesus." "What does that mean?" asked James. "It means we can't let anything distract us from Jesus and what He's doing in our lives," replied Jackson. "This world is full of distractions, and we're often tempted to chase after things like money or popularity, thinking they'll make us happy, or do things our way instead of doing what God wants us to do. But when we keep our eyes on Jesus, we remember that He's saved us and is using us to help others know about Him. Then we'll remember that only He can satisfy us, and we can focus on what He wants us to do in every situation." James grabbed his mitt from the floor. "Well, in baseball, you have to keep your eyes on the ball." He grinned at Jackson. "But I'll keep my eyes on Jesus too and remember I'm playing for Him." Betty J. Thomas How About You? Do you keep your eyes on Jesus? When you have a bad day, do you go to Him for comfort? When you have a need, do you trust Him to provide for you? We all experience pain and grief and in these seasons, we can feel depths of emotion that are hard to resolve. How does unresolved grief affect your sales potential? Let's learn about dealing with unresolved grief today with Herdyne Mercier. Herdyne Mercier is the Chief Grief Crusader and host of Redefining Grief Podcast with Herdyne Mercier. Her job is to create safe spaces so that broken hearts can be seen, heard, and validated. The process helps you get unstuck from your unresolved grief and get you to a place of purposeful living. Redefining grief Herdyne defines grief as experiencing any kind of loss. This isn't limited to losing a loved one to death. Grief can also be felt when you move to a new place, experience job loss, go through divorce, or when filing for bankruptcy. Herdyne had the exact feeling when along with her husband, they filed for bankruptcy back in 2007/2008. The real estate market crashed and they couldn't sell their home. Her husband, James Mercier, could not find a job with a Master's Degree. Herdyne had to become the main provider for the family while James delivered newspapers and sushi. As a new mother, she grieved having only thirteen days to spend with her newborn son before she realized she had to go back to work. As James adjusted to being a stay-at-home father, he too grieved as a man because of the job he'd lost. The grief almost cost them their marriage when Herdyne told her husband that she needed a divorce but James, in his wisdom, suggested they go to counseling together instead. The process of overcoming her own grief helped her create a brand that represents a woman who had forgotten to put on her MASK (an acronym we'll explain) but is now healed. In her healing, she is now able to serve others. Days of grieving Many are grieving loss due to the pandemic. People have lost their jobs and some have lost the people they love from this illness. We have all lost something in this pandemic and are trying to figure out how to navigate this new normal. There's a lot of frustration and pain in the process. The first step is to not compare your grief story to someone else's. We may feel that our loss is greater than others but in truth, we can't actually quantify loss. Our culture does not teach us how to deal with loss. Instead, we focus on aiming for the top and shooting for number one. We want the biggest house and the nicest car, but we aren't told what to do with our emotions. We're not guided toward healing when loss occurs. This is nobody's fault - not your parents, not your grandparents, or any other people around you. Circumstances are what they are; however,Herdyne teaches to be still and know your purpose. How do you go about doing that? The truth and connection anchor Emotional anchors will set you free. The first, is truth. Be honest about your grief. The next anchor is connection. Look for that person in whom you can confide and be totally transparent. One of the biggest myths a griever has to overcome is the belief they have to do it alone. Overcoming your truth They say time heals all wounds but Herdyne doesn't believe this to be true. Time doesn't heal all wounds. While time may pass on, you can remain emotionally stuck. Some also believe that keeping yourself busy will help you forget your grief, that if you stay busy, the grief will eventually fade. The truth is, grief won't just disappear. Left unchecked, it will manifest in other ways. These alternatives are just pacifying and soothing behaviours. Giving a hungry baby a pacifier only means you've helped to delay, but not address, the real problem of hunger. In the same vein, you need to heal and not just soothe by taking time for yourself, finding a community, possibly hiring a grief coach or a therapist, and finding a wisdom circle. Seeking wisdom in your situation is how you'll see the beauty of restoration. The restoration anchor is the phase where you've already managed your grief and taken care of the pain and the loss. Your grief Everyone's grief journey is different, so we can't compare or police anyone's journey. We all have our own time frame and can even experience grief flare-ups. Anchor into your truth, your sadness, and your heartache. In seeking the wisdom within your situation, you can begin healing the grief. #Healing The importance of dealing with your truth Oftentimes, people can be tempted to “go with the flow” in order to ignore the pain. For example, you may be hurt because your friend wasn't there when you needed him/her. Instead of talking it out, you decide to get on with your life to get over it. You think you're okay until your friend calls and you don't answer your phone. Because you didn't address the root cause of your pain, your feelings haven't been resolved. The first step toward healing is to seek wisdom. Herdyn has many free resources about how you can find wisdom. This resource has 61 different ways you experience grief and how you can deal with each one. Once you know how to deal with grief, you'll be closer to setting yourself free. When we were children, we were told to go to our rooms when we cried. As parents, it's our job to let our children grieve. Instead of asking why they're crying, ask them to share what their tears represent. Allow them to express themselves and let them tell their story. Follow the MASK At one point, Herdyne was wondering why she wasn't selling the shirts from her brand. She was wearing the product, sharing it on social media, and once in a while, had it in her Etsy store. Still, the shirts weren't selling. Herdyne sought wisdom by enrolling in the TSE course where she learned that she needed to do more than just wear her items, she needed to promote her brand, Wifedence. She realized she needed to share that her brand means standing up and showing love, offering support, and living life with a purpose. It means standing up and having the life you deserve. When you're grieving, remember MASK. M - maintain your peace A - acknowledge your emotion S - seek community K - this too shall pass When facing grief as a salesperson or as an individual, don't just ignore it. Address your grief and overcome it. “How To Unlock Your Sales Potential By Dealing With Unresolved Grief” episode resources This episode is brought to you in part by Crmble, the easy-peasy CRM for Trello that helps you manage your contacts and leads without investing in complicated solutions, sync all your data, manage custom fields, and get powerful reporting on your sales. In episode 193, Kestrel welcomes James Bartle, the Founding CEO of Outland Denim, to the show. Outland crafts premium denim jeans designed to bring the worlds of their seamstresses and their customers closer together. They made history as the first-ever denim brand to win the Thomson Reuters Stop Slavery Award in 2020. “It’s like they absorb history — they’re kind of like a song where they take you back to a memory and it’s for that reason that you don’t throw out a beautiful, premium pair of jeans even when they’re worn out — you want to leave them in your cupboard because of those memories that are associated with that product. And again, I think that’s what gives it so much power in being able to impact people.” -James Bartle, Founding CEO of Outland Denim On this week’s show, James shares more on how he went from being a freestyle motorbike rider to building a denim brand, after learning more deeply about the realities of human trafficking. James also shares that with Outland Denim’s model, their seamstresses are trained on all the intricacies to construct a beautiful pair of jeans, so in their manufacturing, their employees actually sew entire garments. Typically in factories, sewers only sew one component of the garment repeatedly. As James says, “I guess the reason that we don’t see that as a viable or sustainable option is that it really does trap her into a much smaller variety of opportunities for her to be able to progress in her career and work life.” The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: “I think one of the keys in the success that we’ve been able to have on a social level is that we recognize that we can’t make the change for them — we just need to give them the tools for them to make the changes in their lives themselves.” “You know — often a brand will have a sustainable collection or a sustainable line — you know, to me that just says you’re not a sustainable brand.” "Sustainable brand Outland Denim feels the Markle effect with a 948% increase in traffic", article on Harper’s Bazaar, October 2018 Outland was able to employ 46 new seamstresses as a result of Meghan Markle wearing their product Outland Denim’s equity crowdfunding LIVE webinar on April 2nd, 2020 at 9am PST // register here > Follow @consciouschatter for more details on the LIVE series launching on The Sustainable Fashion Forum's Instagram next week!
James Richardson is the founder of Premium Growth Solutions, a strategic planning consultancy for early-stage consumer-packaged-goods brands. As a professionally trained cultural anthropologist turned business strategist, he has helped more than 75 CPG brands with their strategic planning, including brands owned by Coca-Cola Venturing and Emerging Brands, The Hershey Company, General Mills, Kraft Foods, ConAgra Brands, and Frito-Lay as well as emerging brands such as Once Upon a Farm, Mother Kombucha, Bobby Sue’s Nuts, Rebel Creamery, Zaca recovery, and others. He also hosts his own podcast—Startup Confidential. His thoughts appear regularly in industry publications such as Foodnavigator. As a kid, James aspired to become a college professor, as he puts it, a Professor of Something. And so he did. His career journey started on the academic path as a cultural anthropologist, studying the analysis of value systems, symbol systems, and how those do or do not get enacted in different cultures. He specialized in Southeast Asia and lived in India for three years where he studied and witnessed their caste system. It took nine years to get a Ph.D. in anthropology, and after all of that, he made the difficult choice to leave the academic track to work in the private sector. Fortunately, he joined a small startup company that needed someone with his credentials to work with consumer packaged goods product brands. He spent 17 years with them and today runs his own consulting business and recently published his book, Ramping Your Brand. In this episode we discuss: How James spent 9 years achieving his Ph.D. in anthropology, including three years in India and two near-death experiences. He dreamed of being a professor as a child. Toward the end of his degree program, he realized he had become disenchanted with the academic path. James then spent significant time investigating the options available for Ph.D. anthropologists in the private sector. Fortunately, he identified a startup company, The Hartman Group. They needed someone with his credentials to work with consumer packaged goods (CPG) product brands. As James grew with The Hartman Group over 17 years, he went from Senior Analyst and then finished there as a Vice President of the company. He has helped more than 75 CPG brands with their strategic planning. Today James runs Premium Growth Solutions and recently published his book, “Ramping Your Brand, How To Ride The CPG Growth Curve.” Listen, subscribe and read show notes at www.tammygoolerloeb.com/podcasts/ - episode 066
