Jesus is Absolutely Sufficient for Every Situation
This event we are looking at today in Jesus' life is often called the Triumphal Entry. We all know the scene well: Jesus entering Jerusalem accompanied by the waving of palm branches, the cheering of the crowds and great anticipation. If you were a visitor to Jerusalem on this day, if you were unfamiliar with Jesus' life and teachings, you would probably be wondering what this was all about. You might even ask, “What makes Jesus worthy of worship?” I) Jesus Reveals that He is the Messiah (28-34) There are three ways Jesus reveals himself as Messiah. A) He starts from the Mount of Olives (28-29) The starting point of the Mount of Olives is important because the Mount of Olives is more than just a geographical marker here. The Mount of Olives has Messianic implications. Ezekiel 11:23 and Zechariah 14:4 B) He rides the tethered colt (30) For the Jewish person in Jesus' day, steeped in the Old Testament as they were, this tethered colt here in Luke's gospel would evoke associations with this prophecy in Genesis 49:10-11 and provide yet another reason to see Jesus as the Messiah. C) Jesus alludes to the position of “Lord” (31-34) The name “Lord” was a title that was used for the coming Messiah. For example, Psalm 110:1 “The LORD says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.'” II) The People Reveal Jesus as Messiah (35-38) We see this in a number of ways. A) They place him on the donkey (35) By placing him on the donkey and then going before him into the city of Jerusalem, the people clearly proclaim Jesus as Messiah and king. B) They spread their cloaks before him (36) The spreading of the cloaks was a sign of respect for the king. (2 Kings 9:13) C) They shout his praises (37-38) The word “hosanna” literally means, “Lord save us!” (Matthew 21:9) The praises of the people are the third way that the people proclaim Jesus as Messiah as he enters Jerusalem. III) Jesus Relishes their praise of him as Messiah (39-40) Not everyone was happy about Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. A) The Pharisees object to the people's praise of Jesus (39) They understood the implications of all these things. Jesus was revealing himself as Messiah, and the people revealed Jesus as Messiah. And so, they tell Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples. Tell them to stop!” B) Jesus relishes the people's praise (40) In fact, instead of rebuking them, Jesus relishes the people's praise instead. Look at verse 40: “I tell you that, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” I love that phrase. It is wonderfully ambiguous, and yet at the same time such a clear affirmation that Jesus accepted the people's praise of him as Messiah. In Closing: We started out asking the question, “What makes Jesus worthy of worship? So, what does Jesus' triumphal entry say to us today? Let me leave you with three words of application. 1) Believe that Jesus is the Messiah. 2) Serve him as King. 3) Proclaim his praises. How do you respond to Jesus' Triumphal Entry today?
In this teaching, which is a continuation of the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 18, the Lord Jesus offers a simple guide on how to deal w/ Sin, when two or more Believers are gathered in His Name. Plus, the Lord teaches on the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant - Be blessed!
In this Bible study, which is a continuation of the expository Bible preaching of the Gospel of Matthew chapter 16, learn how and why the Lord Jesus began to talk openly about His death - why did Jesus wait so long to reveal this Truth to His disciples? Listen and find out!
In this session, Dr Ruth continues with her expository Bible study teaching of Matthew chapter 14, explaining how the Lord Jesus walked on Water - displaying His authority over Creation. Plus, learn how God wants us to surrender even the “little things” in our lives to Him, so that He can multiply them – Be blessed!
In this session, which is a continuation of the Lord Jesus' instructions to His First-century disciples and us today when out in the world proclaiming the Gospel Message, you will learn how the wisdom of God is essential in preaching and teaching God's Word to others. Be prepared to learn more.

I) Possess the Same Humility as Jesus (5) That phrase “your attitude should be the same” means “to think or direct your mind” in a certain direction. II) The Humble Journey of Jesus (6-8) The humble journey of our Lord Jesus' descent from Heaven to earth. A) Jesus started out at the highest place (“equality with God”) Long before Jesus was born at Bethlehem, long before he created the world, from all of eternity Jesus shared eternal glory with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. B) Jesus traveled to the lowest place (“made himself nothing”) The phrase literally means that he emptied himself. He poured himself out in love for you and for me in humble obedience to the Father. He gave up those rights and privileges in coming to earth as our Savior. Exactly, what rights and privileges did He give up? 1) He took on the life of a servant The word servant can also be translated “slave.” And what is a slave? A slave is someone who has no rights. One of the early Greek writers wrote that whoever is permitted to do whatever he wishes is a free man and whoever is not is a slave. Jesus took the attitude of a servant or a slave, and he said to the Father: “Not my will but yours.” The first step downward for Jesus was becoming a servant, submitting himself to the Father's will and willingly giving himself in humble service to others. 2) He took on the form of a human He became a human being. In Genesis 1 man was created in the likeness of God. Here we find God being made in the likeness of man. The invisible God became visible. He took on flesh in full view of all. He laid aside his glory as God to become human. He was truly God and truly man. 3) He was obedient even to death This verse shows us how low Jesus was willing to go. He became obedient unto death. This doesn't mean Jesus was just obedient up until the time he died, but that his death was part of his obedience. He was obedient even to God's command to die, to willingly give up his life for others. (Matthew 26:42) 4) He endured the humiliation of the cross Notice the cross was Jesus' destination all along. All the other steps down the ladder were simply necessary steps to get him there. The cross was the heart of Jesus' mission, and it is the heart of the gospel. Apart from Jesus' death for us on the cross, there would be no salvation. III) The Glorious Exaltation of Jesus (9-11) The gospel is the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection. God did not leave Jesus in the grave but raised him from the dead and exalted him to the highest place. A) God exalted Jesus to the highest place Notice the change in direction. God exalted him to the highest place. Jesus humbled himself, but God exalted him. The journey down was all the things that Jesus did. But the journey back up is all the things that God the Father did. Jesus humbled himself; God exalted him. B) God exalted the name of Jesus above every other name “God gave him the name that is above every name.” (Philippians 2:9b) Although we often think of “Jesus” as being the name above all names. We see that Jesus was named “Jesus” at his birth. But at his exaltation he was given the name “Lord”. C) God exalted the worship of Jesus Every knee will bow. In short, you can bow before Jesus now, or you can bow later. But one day everyone will bow before him and confess him as Lord. In Closing: Let me leave you with three application points. 1) There is no task too small to do for Jesus. 2) There is no obedience too difficult for you through Christ. 3) There is no reward so sweet as that which God gives. God calls you to have the same attitude as Jesus. God calls you to step out of your comfort zone, let go of your rights, and humbly serve each other out of obedience to God. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, Bartimaeus began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” Mark 10:47These words from Bartimaeus, the blind man, present us with the perfect prayer for a few reasons.First, this prayer reveals the deep humility of Bartimaeus. By praying this prayer, Bartimaeus expresses the fact that he knew Jesus was the source of what he needed and that he was unable to help himself. Bartimaeus knew that he was weak but that Jesus was perfect strength. Thus, Bartimaeus humbly turned to Jesus in his need, recognizing Him as the source.Second, it is a prayer that cries for “pity.” Pity is the feeling of sorrow and compassion caused by the suffering of others. Pity is mercy and is the form of love given to one by another who has no need of giving it. In this prayer, Bartimaeus asks the all-powerful Lord to show him kindness and mercy, even though he is unworthy of such a gift. This prayer reveals the fact that Bartimaeus knew he was undeserving of help from our Lord, but he cried out for it anyway in the hope that Jesus would help. And, indeed, He does.Third, this prayer reveals a certain and deep passion. It is not just a request for God's help; rather, it is a cry for help. It's a plea and a form of begging. It's an opening up of one's soul to God, without concern of displaying one's own weaknesses or worry that others will witness it or what they'll think. This shows the depth of the blind man's prayer. Reflect, today, upon these three lessons from Bartimaeus' short prayer. We must be humble, beg for mercy, and do so with deep passion and longing. Praying this way will most certainly dispose us to the grace and mercy of God.Lord, Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me. I do humbly beg You with all my heart for Your mercy and compassion. Though I am unworthy, I seek Your grace and trust in Your goodness. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. I) Jesus Offers the Possibility of Freedom (31-32) Jesus makes one of the most amazing Inspirational claims in history. Consider for a moment the incredible hope expressed in the promise that Jesus can set people free. To those living in bondage, Jesus offers freedom! A) The freedom offered by Jesus is spiritual. True Spiritual Freedom is not dependent upon physical circumstances that may have led or contributed to your bondage. One of the main truths of divine freedom is Jesus is more concerned about setting your soul free than defeating the Roman Empire or some other external force in your life. B) Jesus' freedom is also purposeful. Freedom is not a lack of restraint that allows one to fulfill any selfish desire, but genuine freedom takes place in the arena or stadium of divine truth. As we abide in Christ we are released from the chains of the world and released to be all that God created us to be. (Romans 6:1-2) Christ is the only one who can set us free to enjoy the life as a child of God instead of living as a slave of the world. II) The Obvious Perils of Freedom (33) Even though Jesus clearly declared that freedom was possible, the sad reality is that very few experience it. (Matthew 7:13-14) The following is not an exhaustive list, but several perils or roadblocks hindering freedom are identified in the text. A) The first peril is Ignorance. Jesus is declaring a new truth to some who did not know that freedom was available. (Romans 10:3) The Bible describes those who lacked knowledge of Christ's ministry as "living in darkness". B) A second peril is arrogance. The Pharisees' statement that they had never lived as slaves is not just inaccurate; it is arrogant. (Romans 3:23) They were unwilling to admit that they had failed to meet God's holy standard. C) Reluctance to change. This group was not ignorant. They were not arrogant because they recognized a need for Christ, but they were unwilling to surrender to the lordship of Christ D) Complacency in life. Contained in the text is the exhortation to be free indeed or complete freedom. This exhortation seems to stand in contrast to those who would accept marginal freedom. I am convinced far too many individuals who call themselves "Christians" live complacent lives choosing blessings from the bottom shelf when abundant freedom is available. (John 10:10b) Are you living "fee indeed?" III) Understanding the Process of Experiencing Freedom Jesus identifies a process for experiencing true freedom with the words, "If.. then." The little word "if" is a big concept in the kingdom of God. The word represents an invitation. True freedom will not attack you; rather you must respond to God's invitation to accept His complete freedom. Jesus declares that true freedom is found in, "MY word." Two concepts emerge from the text related to abiding in truth. 1) Abiding refers to perseverance. True freedom is not found through a casual glance at the claims of Christ, but one must be willing to "dwell" in the Word of God (v.31). 2) Abiding in a place or location. Abide comes from the root word abode meaning home or dwelling place. The word picture communicated is one of moving to a new home. In Closing: Just as the 4th of July represents our freedoms as Americans. We know that you don't have them if you are not a citizen living in the USA. The same applies to God's freedom, we must abide in His Word to experience it. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.” Luke 24:45–48 (Year B)This was the final appearance to the disciples as recorded in Luke’s Gospel. In this appearance, Jesus showed the Apostles His hands and His feet, explained to them that He had to suffer, die and rise, as was foretold by the prophets. He exhorted them to be “witnesses of these things,” He explained that very soon the Holy Spirit would come from the Father, and then walked with them to Bethany where He ascended to Heaven. These, the final earthly words of Jesus, set forth the mission of these Apostles as well as the mission of all of us.“You are witnesses of these things,” Jesus said. What things? The Apostles were to be witnesses to the Paschal Mystery: Jesus’ suffering, death and Resurrection. The proclamation of these truths are the central mission of Jesus’ Apostles and all of us.How often do you think about the Paschal Mystery? Perhaps you have heard those words but do not fully understand what they are. What is the “Paschal Mystery?” The Paschal Mystery was what Jesus told the Apostles to be witnesses to. They were to be witnesses to others that Jesus came from the Father, suffered death for our sins, rose from the dead to conquer sin and then ascended into Heaven to invite us to follow. This is the most central message of our faith.Sometimes our Christian faith can be treated more like a book of “do good lessons” than as the saving truths of our redemption. Though it’s essential to understand the moral laws and the call to charitable works, we must always remember that the heart of the Gospel is about salvation. It’s about Jesus dying for our sins and rising victorious so that we can enter the glories of Heaven. We do not enter Heaven simply because we are good people; rather, we are able to enter Heaven only because of the saving act of the Paschal Mystery. And though this saving act calls us to a life of charitable service to others, that charitable work is more of an effect of salvation than it is the central purpose of our faith. The Gospel passage quoted above also says that Jesus “opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” Therefore, if we, like the Apostles, are to understand the Gospel and the central purpose of Jesus’ life and our own lives, then we must allow Him to open our minds also. We must allow Jesus to reveal to us the Paschal Mystery, because it is not something we can comprehend or figure out on our own.Reflect, today, upon how clearly you understand the purpose of the life of Christ. Do you understand the mysteries of His human life, suffering, death and Resurrection? Do you understand how these truths of our faith must change you at your very core? And do you understand your duty to be a witness to these mysteries of faith to others? Sit with these questions and allow them to sink in deeply so that you may join the Apostles in both the gift of redemption and the call to evangelize the world. My saving Lord, Your life, death and Resurrection is the greatest gift ever given. Through this Paschal Mystery, we are set free from sin and become children of Your Father in Heaven. Open my mind to more fully understand this great gift and give me the grace I need to become Your witness to the world in need. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

Dean waits till we get up there to let me know about this thing called, Fat Mans Squeeze. Do you know about this? It's where you have hiked up this mountain, almost going straight up it, I mean, I'm dying. And you get up there and there is this passage that you have to squeeze through one at a time. This is me on my way up through it, note that my body is wider than this thing I'm about to walk into… Piper, my daughter was making fun of me because it looked like I was going to get stuck, all my kids were like, “Look at me dad, we can just walk through…” ME:I wish I could say that my life didn't have pinch points like Fat Mans Squeeze, but the truth is, I've got the same kind of squeezes all the time when it comes to my relationships… One of the biggest squeezes that Jenni and I have faced is with finances. Finances can put the squeeze on a relationship like almost nothing else. WE:-Maybe you know what I'm talking about - your hours got cut in half and now you are fighting all the time about money-You keep your money separate, your spouse doesn't know it, but you are jealous because after all the bills are paid, they have all kinds of money and you feel like you have nothing-You are the saver in the family and your spouse is the spender. There is a constant tension between the two of you and your difference in how you handle money There was a study done that found that 36% of couples were stressed about money at any given time. -the numbers went up the younger the couple was…that means that over 1/3 of the couples in this room and online are stressed about money RIGHT now.-My guess is the numbers are even higher with Covid. Money and finances can put the squeeze on you. Today, I want to suggest to you a biblical mindset when it comes to dealing with money and then share some practical things you can do to put yourself in a better position relationally when it comes to finances. Gaining a Biblical Mindset When it Comes to Finances: Jesus tells a parable about the Kingdom of Heaven in Matthew 25 using money and resources as an example. Mt 25:14-3014 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[a] each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,' he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.'21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,' he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.'23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,' he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.'26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' ILLUSTRATION: When I was a kid, my parents thought it would be a good idea for me to get a job, so they convinced this couple to let me babysit their kids when I was like 11. This was a bad idea… I only lasted a couple days. One day we took booby trap fireworks and booby trapped the whole house, my thought was, what parent doesn't want the excitement of random doors exploding when they open them, and the kids thought it was a blast. I think the final straw was when I had the kids in the garage throwing darts into the ceiling. The youngest kid walked under one of the darts at the exact perfect moment, I watched in utter delight as the dart fell out of the ceiling, turned to point downwards and stick straight up in this kids head. Ha, it was awesome! he turned an looked at me and started screaming. I just pulled the dart out and told him not to tell his parents… Ha, ho takes the most precious thing in the world and gives the stewardship of it to a goober? You know what stewardship is, right? Stewardship is managing someone else's property or resources Jesus is saying the Kingdom of Heaven is a stewardship responsibility B Jesus' question is, will you invest your life for the Kingdom or just burry it? B If you are a follower of Christ, your time, your treasure, your talents - have ALL been given to you by God for one purpose, to Advance the Kingdom of God. b But most of us see ourselves as more of a bucket than a funnel. Get this, God has entrusted you with the resources you have, whether it's a lot or a little, and His expectation is that you will use it for the Kingdom, not just sit on it. He doesn't see you as a goober, He sees you as an integral part of his Plan of salvation. b I guess the question is do you see yourself that way? Getting a biblical perspective of stewardship with your finances will completely overhaul the issues you have with money in your relationship.-all of the sudden, you won't be fighting over who spent what, you'll be talking about how much you should give to a single mom-you will see your money as an overflow from the King, so, when you give, you know that He can give more-you will see increases in your financial resources as greater opportunities to give and advance the Kingdom-You will unite around the Kingdom rather than dividing over trying to build your own personal kingdom So, what are some practicals to get there? You will never be able to be generous in an ongoing manner till you develop a strategy for handling your resources. b Here is an easy strategy to help you get to your goal of using your resources for the Kingdom: Give. If you don't give first, then there will always be something else to take it's place. In our family, we give 10% to the church and then give above and beyond that to some other endeavors. So, if 90% becomes my new 100%, guess what, I will always have enough, but if I try and give that 10% at the end of the month. I will never have it. It's really a question of priority, for me, I've learned that I can't out generous God. Save. You need to be wise in this department as well. Savings is not just about being able to have money for yourself in desperate times, it's also a means to be more generous. We were recently faced with an opportunity to help a family and were able to help in a way more significant way than we would have if we didn't have savings built up. Spend. The rest is for you to spend on yourself and your needs and wants. God is not opposed to Christians having things, He's opposed to those things becoming what we treasure. The best way to get to this point, is to develop a budget. b If you've never done this before, you take what you make, and what you expect to spend, and work out where each and every dollar will go.-We've put a budget together that you can download and work through on our website to get started. I will post a link on FB for you to access it-We are also starting a Financial Peace University course, YOU NEED TO GET INTO IT, if you have never done anything like this. CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: If you aren't a Christian, you are probably like, these Christians are crazy… why would you give up your money, why would you give up what you have like that? It's crazy till you realize what we already know was given to us. God, became flesh, made His dwelling among us. God, who had everything, came down to give to give it away to those who had nothing, so we could experience everything. Christians aren't crazy, we are just already full! If you aren't full yet, let me invite you to a relationship with Jesus. Get your perspective changed in a proper way…

Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. Mark 1:25–26This passage from Mark’s Gospel could be the scene from a horror movie. Well, at least if Hollywood were producing the film. In truth, it’s the scene of an act of great love and mercy and reveals the power and authority of Jesus! It’s the story of a man with an unclean spirit, a demon. The demon is tormenting him. So, Jesus looks at the man with great love and compassion and expels the evil spirit, setting him free. This truly is an act of love. But one question this clearly brings up is the role of the evil spirits in our world and their ability to control, manipulate or, at least, tempt us. They are powerful spiritual beings created by God with free will, and they exercised that free will to turn away from God. One of their primary duties, granted them at the moment of their creation, was to care for humanity. Those spirits who fell from grace by their pride and sin still retain their natural spiritual power. But because of their fall, they now only have hatred for mankind and seek to destroy us. This is real. And this is something we should be keenly aware of.But there is no reason to lose hope or to give in to fear. These beings are, of course, ultimately subject to the power and authority of God. They can do nothing without God permitting it—and, in the end, they can have no power over our lives. But for now, we need to be aware of their natural spiritual power and influence. We need to understand that they can and will try to wreak havoc in our lives. When we let fear weaken our faith, and lack trust in God’s almighty power, we slowly allow them to have more influence over us. But when we allow the grace and mercy of God to overshadow their evil influence, we hear Jesus rebuke them and order them to cease.Reflect, today, upon the fact that the spiritual battle is a real one. However, the victory is assured if we only humble ourselves before God and trust in His power and authority. Humility is the key to this spiritual battle. It’s the key to overcoming the attacks and temptations of the evil one. So, humble yourself before God when you feel oppressed or tempted. Humble yourself by admitting your weaknesses. Acknowledge that only God has the authority to strengthen you. Put your trust in Him. He will not let you down!Lord, I am weak and nothing without You. Help me to know and believe that. Help me to humble myself before You and to be strengthened in that humility to overcome the temptations and influences of the evil one. Jesus, I trust in You!Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2020 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

We all get those, right? You've been asking for a remote control car, and you get a hot wheel… This Christmas, I wanted a Jean Jacket… You know that's right, I look good in a Jean Jacket. It was the 80's… I'll never forget, my grandma handed me a package, I could feel it was a thick JC Penney box. When it was my turn, I ripped into it. I opened it up and saw this perfectly stone washed, if you don't know what that is, sorry for you… Jean Jacket! It was perfect. I took it out and looked at it. I put my arms in it, and as I'm slipping it on, my grandma says, “I know you have short arms, so I took the liberty to hem up the sleeves…” as she said that, I slipped on the coat and realized that my grandma believed I had the arms of a 6 year old. I'm standing there with sleeves half way up to my elbow. Every adult is looking at it and going, “oh, ah,” but I felt dejected, like Christmas had been ruined. But what do you do in that moment…We all know what you are supposed to do, right? You smile and act like the gift was exactly what you wanted… So, I tried, I put on the best fake smile I could and I said, “thanks Grandma, it's exactly what I wanted…” I lied like a dog… Truth be told, I'm terrible at responding to Christmas presents. I've learned, thanks to people telling me, that I'm kind of picky when it comes to getting me gifts. And I am definitely terrible at responding well when I don't get what I was really wanting… WE:I think most of us have that problem, especially when it comes to spiritual things… Most of us have a Christmas gift wish from God. Things we have wanted to have him answer that may or may not have gotten answered the way we wanted… -God, heal my mom-God, I really need this raise-God, help me right now, I feel so lost We get stuck in these moments, not knowing if God is really for us, if He really loves us or not… Can, I help put that question to rest and take you back to Christmas one more time? THE BIBLE: We enter into the Christmas story again. Not the one from Christmas songs, but the real one. The one that is full of spiritual battle in the spiritual real, full of babies being born into unlikely places, full of bright nights and shepherds seeing angels while Bethlehem is completely quiet. 8 days have passed, the Jewish law required Mary to wait 7 days after giving birth in order to perform purification rituals under the law of Moses. Luke 2:22-2422 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[a]), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons. ”They have brought Jesus to undergo a rite Himself. Little baby Jesus will be circumcised and Mary and Joseph will offer a sacrifice both for her purity ritual and to redeem Jesus… According the Jewish law, Jesus had to be redeemed. To understand this, we have to have a quick history lesson… When God brought the Jewish people of out Egypt, the final plague that came upon the Egyptians was the plague of the death of the firstborn child. The death angel went through all of Egypt and any family that did not have blood on their doorposts and the mantle above the door would have wake up that next morning to the first born child dead. Not only their children, but their animals as well… God told the Israelites that from then on, the first born son of every family and the firstborn of every animal was the Lords. They were to bring the animal to sacrifice and they were to bring their son to be consecrated - made holy to God and to be redeemed… Mary and Joseph are consecrating Jesus (committing Him as a holy offering to God) and redeeming Him - purchasing Him back through the substitution of an animals life for His life. This is where we get off the history train… All of this is a set up for what Paul says in Galatians when He's describing the work of Jesus… Listen to this, this is where Paul describes Christmas… Galatians 4:4-54 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. ILLUSTRATION: I'll never forget the November of 2010, it was a chili day in Wichita, KS. All of Jenni's family was in the airport in Wichita. We were waiting for her sister and our brother-in-law to get in from their flight to the Ukraine. They had flown over to adopt our nephew. He's an amazing young man now. At the time, he was an 18 month little boy in an orphanage in the Ukraine. He had severe health problems. His kidneys didn't function properly and they had literally drilled holes into his back to allow his kidneys to just drain urine into his diapers. He is a super smart little boy, but in the Ukraine, his physical condition would have meant that as he aged he would have been put in a mental hospital and left there. He was a little boy that society had abandoned. Thankfully, my in-laws didn't know that you were supposed to bribe the officials in order to get the pick of children that were healthy, so when the book of children they were given included my nephew. They picked him out and at incredible financial strain they flew over and brought their son home. I'll never forget meeting him in that cold airport, watching him be overwhelmed by all the love being poured out on him. All of the sudden, I was overwhelmed by what God had done for me… Can I read you that scripture again? Galatians 4:4-64 But when the set time had fully come, This was the exact right moment in time for Jesus to come… Someday we will do a sermon on just how full the time was, how everything in the known world was ripe for Jesus to come… God had been waiting for THIS moment! And it was “now” that He struck his blow! God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, Jesus was born, just like I was, just like you were-under the law…What this means is that Jesus was subject to the exact same law that you and I are subject to-the law of knowing Good and evil -the law that points out when we have sinned and gives sin it's power Jesus came like you, to reach you…Paul says it this way…5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Remember redemption? Mary and Joseph redeemed Jesus who had come to redeem us. B Jesus came to redeem us from the law- He paid the price owed to the law to make us children of God. Let me take you through Paul's Logic: b In the Garden of Eden, we gave up knowledge of God for knowledge of good and evil. b The purpose of the law is to point out good and evil. b Adam and Eve chose to reject God as their authority and to live under the authority of the law of good and evil. b Paul calls living under the law a curse, because no one can perfectly keep the perfect law - it's an impossible task b So, Jesus came to pay the price for that sin - to buy us back to sonship in Him… CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: So man of us have had a hard time responding to God because we were looking for something he may never have intended to give you anyway. God's promise is not an easy perfect life. God's promise is a new life, a new heart. Ezekiel 26:36I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. This is how Paul ends that passage in Galatians Galatians 4:5-65 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” God didn't come to fix every bad thing you go through, He came to fix YOU and to walk through life with you. That's the promise! Some of you have responded to Jesus like I did when my grandma gave me that coat. Like, “Thanks for the gift…. but…” When what you really got, was more like my nephew.. You got a God, who stepped out of heaven to be born into this world, just like you were - at the exact moment where it would make the most difference, and to give His life for you… This morning, you can literally reverse the curse in your life…It's the curse that has captured your thinking and the way you treat people-you can be made new-to walk through this Christmas having actually accepted Jesus-Don't walk away from this Christmas gift, respond today.
Hebrews 12:1 12 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us The Christian life is not a stroll through the park. Nor is it a 100-yard dash. It is a long-distance marathon, and we are called to run with perseverance the race marked out for us. I) As a Christian God does not promise you an easy life A) We live in a fallen world. Romans 8:18-21 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. 20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. B) We should expect trials John 16:33; Acts 14:21-22 “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) 21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, 22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. (Acts 14:21-22) II) As a Christian God does promise to be with you "God never promise a smooth flight just a safe landing". (Howard Jones) A) Jesus gives you his peace. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your earts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) B) Jesus gives you His presence "lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:20) III) For the Christian God promises great benefits to those who persevere A) Sticking with it shows our faith to be genuine 1 Peter 1:6-7: 6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: “7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:” B) Sticking with it develops character James 1: 2-4 says this: “2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” C) He who stick with it to the end will be saved “12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. 13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” (Matthew 24:12-13) “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.” (James 1:12) Daniel 3:16-18: 16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. 17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up Watch us on our YouTube channel, our website or our Facebook page https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi7C66QudDzbTDtA-DaSQBw/ https://midwaybaptistnc.org https://facebook.com/midwaybaptistnc
Be patient and keep walking with Jesus.
Jesus' return is a blessing to believers and judgment to unbeliever's.
Marge Singleton - "Lie To Me" Live "Lie To Me"
On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, [Bartimaeus] began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” Mark 10:47These words from Bartimaeus the blind man present us with the perfect prayer for a few reasons.First, this prayer reveals the deep humility of Bartimaeus. By praying this prayer, Bartimaeus expresses the fact that he knew Jesus was the source of what he needed and that he was unable to help himself. Bartimaeus knew that he was weak but that Jesus was perfect strength. Thus, he humbly turned to Jesus in his need, recognizing Him as the source.Second, it is a prayer that cries for “pity.” Pity is the feeling of sorrow and compassion caused by the suffering of others. Pity is mercy and is the form of love given to one by another who has no need of giving it. In this prayer, Bartimaeus asks the all-powerful Lord to show him kindness and mercy even though he is unworthy of such a gift. This prayer reveals the fact that Bartimaeus knew he was undeserving of help from our Lord, but he cried out for it anyway in the hope that Jesus would help. And, indeed, He does.Third, this prayer reveals a certain and deep passion. It is not just a request for God’s help, rather it is a cry for help. It’s a plea and a form of begging. It’s an opening up of one’s soul to God, without concern of displaying one’s own weaknesses or worry that others will witness it or what they’ll think. This shows the depth of the blind man’s prayer.Reflect, today, upon these three lessons from Bartimaeus’ short prayer. Jesus, I trust in You.

Introduction ∆ Jesus is bigger & better! ∆ What we know about Hebrews ∆ Why they needed to hear this message ∆ God should be trusted and obeyed – but why? Because God has spoken to us (1-2a) (A) Through his word (1) (B) Through his Son (2a) Because the message spoken is the most important, life-giving, hope-instilling, obedience-producing message ever (2b-3) (A) Jesus is the Creator and Sustainer of the entire universe (2b, 3b; John 1; Col 1 (B) Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory & the exact imprint of his nature (3a) (C) Jesus provided purification for sins (3c; Heb 10:12-14)
Some Notes for the message on the ascension for May 17, 2015Please listen to the audio message as these notes are not a transcript, but are only here to help provide a framework for the message. Also - please see the questions for discussion and reflection at the bottom of the notes. You can use the comments below to discuss or go to the Message Discussion Group on Facebook 1) John Calvin in the Institutes of Christian Religion says this about the ascension of Jesus into heaven: “...he withdrew his bodily presence from our sight [Acts 1:9], not to cease being present with believers still on their earthly pilgrimage, but to rule heaven and earth with a more immediate power." Institutes II, 16, 16 (pg. 524-525) Summary of Calvin’s benefits imparted to our faith by Christ’s ascension A) Jesus opens heaven to us. “Since he entered heaven in our flesh, as if in our name, it follow, as the apostle says, that in a sense we already ‘sit with God in the heavenly places in him' [Eph. 2:6], so that we do not await heaven with a bare hope, but in our Head already possess it. B) Jesus, in the presence of the Father is our “advocate and intercessor.” “He turns the Father’s eyes to his own righteousness to avert his gaze from our sins. He so reconciles the Father’s heart to us that by his intercession he prepares a way and access for us to the Father’s throne." C) “When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive,” (Eph. 4:8), and despoiling his enemies, he enriched his own people, and daily lavishes spiritual riches upon them. He therefore sits on high, transfusing us with his power, that he may quicken us to spiritual life, sanctify us by his Spirit, adorn his church with divers gifts of his grace, keep it safe from all harm by his protection, restrain the raging enemies of his cross and of our salvation by the strength of his hand, and finally hold all power in heaven and on earth. All this he does until he shall lay low all his enemies [1 Cor. 15:25; cf. Ps. 110:1] (who are our enemies too) and complete the building of his church. This is the true state of his Kingdom; this is the power that the father has conferred upon him, until, in coming to judge the living and the dead, he accomplishes his final act. 2) Our misunderstanding of this third from Calvin point started with the disciples that day. The disciples ask: “is this when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” They misunderstand something. What is the nature of their misunderstanding? Commentators don’t agree. Some say that the disciples have missed that the kingdom is for more than Israel. b) Most say that the disciples are still thinking of an earthly kingdom, and have missed that Jesus’ kingdom is heavenly or spiritual. c) Some say that the only mistake the disciples made was one of timing. Is now the time. Jesus says, its not for you to know the times set by the Father. Maybe they missed all these things. Something not right about these when framed as an either / or. But these are all characteristics of the kingdom when seen as both sides being true. The kingdom is either for Israel or the rest of the world. No - its for both. b) The kingdom isn’t an earthly kingdom, its heavenly or spiritual. Actually - its both. And the final promise is not that we will simply all be taken up to heaven as Jesus was. It is that the Kingdom of heaven will be fully realized on earth. We pray for this in the Lord’s prayer. Your kingdom come. Its both. The hoped for physical reality of the kingdom of God on earth, and the heavenly kingdom where Christ is present now. c) The kingdom has not yet come. The time is not now. Some believe it is. Its actually both. The kingdom is now, and it is also not yet. We have a reigning king on the throne of heaven. We have experience of being his subjects, we experience the kingdom of God in part now. But its not yet. 3) The disciples’ misunderstandings help us learn about the nature of the kingdom. But the misunderstanding by the Church over the centuries was actually around Jesus’ answer to their question about the kingdom, and that misunderstanding has sadly had devastating effects: - Jesus tells them - it is not for you to know the times that the Father has set by his own authority. God is in control. Not us, not the Church. - You will be my witnesses. Not - you will make people convert. Not - you will attempt to civilize and assimilate people into your own version of the kingdom. 4) A theology of progress and expansion What is a theology of progress and expansion? Why did it break down? The historical answer Because it was based on human work. Hymns and militaristic/expansionist imagery. 5) Calvin’s insistence on kingdom building and church building being the work of Christ from on high. The third point is entirely focussed on what God is doing, and not at all on what we are doing. In that third point, Calvin ultimately goes to Christ returning to judge the living and the dead. The same event the angels point to "This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Acts 1:11 Jesus’ return is the true invasion. If we are going to use militaristic imagery, we need to know that 6) Our job is to point to Jesus, not to implement a plan of progress. How then to be a witness? Martyr. Point to Jesus. He is on high, and we are not. Cruciform witness. Dying for others. Others are put first. A servant mentality. Lead with grace. Love, listen, proclaim. Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life. Questions for Reflection/Discussion: 1) What does it mean to lead with grace when we are witnesses to Jesus? 2) When someone says that a lot of terrible things have been done in the name of religion or God, how do you think you might respond? 3) Calvin states: "He therefore sits on high, transfusing us with his power, that he may quicken us to spiritual life, sanctify us by his Spirit, adorn his church with divers gifts of his grace, keep it safe from all harm by his protection.” How is this true in your own life, or in the life of your community of faith?
