Oppenheimer was an indie pop band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. The band was made up of musicians Shaun Robinson and Rocky O'Reilly. Robinson and O'Reilly were previously members of the now disbanded Belfast group, Torgas Valley Reds. They met in 2003, in Belfast. O'Reilly had been mixing sound and recording Torgas Valley Reds, whom Robinson drummed for. Inspired by their mutual love for Moog synthesizers, vocoders, and airhorns, O'Reilly and Robinson formed Oppenheimer in late 2004, using O'Reilly's spare room to record three songs, which they sent to their favourite labels. And lucky for us, they found a home at Bar None Records. Many thanks to Mark at Bar None Records for making this happen.

Today's guest makes me feel velvety. And that works on a lot of levels here. Welcome Stan Demeski, drummer for The Feelies. They've released their first ever live album. But there isn't a Feelies song to be found on it. It's all Velvet Underground, all the time. But before we get there, Stan talks about his early days; being a product of New Jersey school bands, his early recording history, and how he started playing with The Feelies.  He also talks about how the band was dropped by A&M records…in a fax! But after that, he landed a gig playing with the band Luna. He talks about how he met and began playing with Dean Wareham and the band. And after years of being disbanded, The Feelies reunited. And both Sonic Youth and REM played a big part in getting that done. All of this resulted in the bands new release on Bar None Records, Some Kinda Love. As stated earlier, it all live and all Velvet Underground covers. Stan also talks about the time the band played with Lou Reed! So check out Some Kinda Love on Bar None, wherever you listen to new music. Get updates on The Feelies Facebook and Instagram pages. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. You can show us support with coffee money at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety or buy merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Darren Jessee is a gifted singer-songwriter and troubadour whose captivating melodies and poignant lyrics have earned him a dedicated following in the world of indie and folk music. Darren's songwriting prowess was evident as the drummer for the critically acclaimed band Ben Folds Five. The band's fusion of alternative rock and piano-driven pop produced hits like "Brick" and "Song for the Dumped," and gained the band a loyal fan base.   After he departed from Ben Folds Five, he formed the band Hotel Lights. Formed in 2000, Hotel Lights released a series of albums that allowed Jessee to explore his songwriting in greater depth. Hotel Lights' music, often characterized by its contemplative themes and heartfelt narratives, has struck a chord with fans who appreciate Jessee's ability to craft songs that are both introspective and universally relatable. His enduring commitment to his craft and his ability to create music that touches the soul and speaks to the heart make him a respected figure in the singer-songwriter genre. Darren stopped by Thunderlove Studio to chat with Keith about Hotel Lights, his solo career, and the release of his new album, Central Bridge. This is a really cool episode. My guest today is Mike Leonard. He plays guitar for The Magnolias, but that's not what we're discussing today. Almost 30 years ago, Mike was in a band called The Bleeding Hearts with Bob Stinson of The Replacements. Mike tells me how he got into music and how The Bleeding Hearts formed. He tells me about how he got Bob to join the band. It wasn't exactly easy. But once he did, he went all in, including moving in with Mike. That, in part, led to the band getting time in the studio and label interest. But soon after the sessions were over, trouble started brewing. Mike talks about all of this, and why it took 29 years for the album to come out. Check out the album on Bar None Records, especially if you like straight up rock and roll. Interview with Avery Mandeville of Little Hag.   This was a great conversation , but due to file corruption the audio isn't 100% . Don't let that steer you away because this was a very inspiring conversation!!     Little Hag, the artist formerly known as Avery Mandeville, was conceived in a New Jersey basement and born again in quarantine. Under the Mandeville mantle she released a number of EPs and put many miles on other people’s vans touring the US. What started as a sarcastic Instagram handle (@littlehag) slowly became serious and somehow a small, vulgar crone took over all of Avery’s social media accounts. Signed by Bar/None Records just as everything was shutting down, Little Hag emerged with “Tetris”, a 2:17 slice of pure pop pugnaciousness with a bummer end of summer vibe. “Tetris” was written in the dog days of quarantine, where you still can’t legally kiss anybody but at least you can get a sunburn. The truth is blistering, as she whimpers: “Everyone wants to fuck me / No one wants to see me cry”. The song is as confident as it is pathetic, a glimpse at a sane and totally chill person who lives to be tormented by things they can’t change. Following this release is a compilation of older tracks titled “Whatever Happened to Avery Jane?” The album chronicles Mandeville’s many pleasures and pains, from insulting your ex to calling out your abuser. She’s a songwriter with a penchant for brutal honesty, imagery, profanity, and the taboo. Many old men have said "I don't get it". In her previous incarnation she was named one of 8 New Jersey musicians you need to know by the Asbury Park Press and the #5 Best album of 2018 by NJ.com. Passion of the Weiss calls Little Hag “…a thrilling songwriter, untethered from time and place, sending DMs and shade, not greetings, from Asbury Park.” Little Hag is Avery on guitar and complaining, Matt Fernicola on guitar, Owen Flanagan on drums, Chris Dubrow on bass, and Noah Rauchwerk on keys and emotional support.   Avery's Info ! https://www.littlehag.com/ http://www.bar-none.com/little-hag https://www.instagram.com/littlehag/?... https://littlehag.bandcamp.com https://www.facebook.com/littlehagmusic

I had a blast chatting with the incredible Winter for Episode 128 of Look At My Records! I’ve been closely following her music since the release of her amazing collaborative album with Triptides, Estrela Mágica, back in 2018. Next month, she’ll be releasing her third album, Endless Space (Between You & I) on Bar None Records. We chatted all about it! Plus, you’ll hear about making the new record with Ian Gibbs of Vinyl Williams, the aforementioned collaborative album with Glenn Brigman of Triptides, and how the pop-music of her native Brazil has influenced her sound. We also played some records from Twin Sister, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Yo La Tengo, and Teenage Fanclub! The episode wraps up with “Staying In,” one of my favorite songs from her 2019 EP “Hazy,” - it features Justus Proffit! You can pre-order Endless Space (Between You & I) on limited edition purple vinyl, cassette, or compact disc via Bar None Records. You can also peruse Winter’s incredible back catalog via Bandcamp or stream it on your platform of choice, including Spotify. Follow Winter on Instagram!

OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY "Gotta Get Back Inside Your Mind" Meet You In The Shadows Burger Records (2019) https://burgerrecords.11spot.com/outrageous-cherry-meet-me-in-the-shadows.html Outrageous Cherry combined psychedelia, folk rock, art rock, and bubblegum music across more than 12 albums and nearly three decades. They attracted an international cult following and were a longstanding fixture in the Detroit rock and roll scene since their first gigs in 1991. MEET YOU IN THE SHADOWS is their final studio album, completed before the passing of founding lead guitarist Larry Ray. Some of the songs, like "Lies Feel Good" and "Creeps Retreat", address contemporary social and political turmoil, while "The Beginning of the End of the Night" and "Complicate Me" are more of a psychological hall of mirrors. The title track, "Meet You in the Shadows" is all of these things at once. The musicians are the same lineup that recorded the previous Outrageous Cherry album on Burger Records, THE DIGITAL AGE: Matthew Smith- vocals, guitar, keyboards Larry Ray - lead guitar Colleen Burke - bass Maria Nuccilli -drums ...with backing vocals by everyone. Outrageous Cherry began in 1991, playing gigs in coffee houses, bars, and art galleries. Like the Gories, who were on the Detroit scene a few years before them, O.C. used a minimal drum kit with no cymbals, which allowed the full range of their guitar tonalities to be heard without having to turn their amps up to 10. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1994 on Bar/None Records, followed by a sequence of albums on different labels, including a couple of years signed to Alan McGee's Poptones label. O.C. toured the USA and Europe, and were sometimes an opening act for bands like Wilco, Yo La Tengo, Stereolab, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Guided by Voices and others. The New Pornographers were also fans of the group and recorded an e.p. of Outrageous Cherry covers. Despite their prolific songwriting tendencies, Outrageous Cherry's best known song is probably their cover of Junior Kimbrough's somewhat psychedelic blues number "Lord Have Mercy on Me", which appeared on a 2005 tribute LP with the reformed Stooges, and later was used in the opening credits of the film "Black Snake Moan". Outrageous Cherry's music also reached a wider audience thanks to Little Steven Van Zandt, who regularly plays O.C. on his radio show, and also curated a CD compilation of his favorite O.C. tracks. The band was always working on new songs and new recordings, even while Matthew Smith was busy producing artists like the Go, Andre Williams, Nathaniel Mayer, and touring with Rodriguez, Crime and the City Solution, and the Volebeats. The band had a few personnel changes through the years in the rhythm section, but Matthew and Larry had a solid musical chemistry. The blend of Larry's lead guitar and Matthew's lead vocals was always inspiring them to keep cranking out records. MEET YOU IN THE SHADOWS finds Larry's guitar solos blasting over and under the vocal melodies and harmonies in as good an example of this chemistry as any of their previous records. On "The Last Nice Guy in Detroit", you can hear Outrageous Cherry in their kitchen rehearsal space and studio, playing a song they've just learned how to play, and then mixing it immediately with no overdubs at all, because it sounded fine right there in the room. In this track you can hear the band doing exactly what they would've been doing at their first rehearsal 25 years earlier. They didn't take these musical happenings for granted, knowing well that it's not easy to keep a musical entity thriving and relevant for so many years. They would look at how long Slade stayed together, or the fact that Kraftwerk were soon coming to town, and this was all the encouragement they needed to keep jamming and writing and recording.

Episode 64 of Look At My Records! is the fourth in a series of episodes previewing the upcoming North Jersey Indie Rock Festival. The annual festival is now in its third year and is happening at White Eagle Hall on Saturday October 6th.For the fourth and final installment, I chatted with the wonderful Glenn Morrow. I can't think of a more fitting way to wrap up this series of preview episodes, as who knows where music in Hudson County would be without Glenn? Would we even be having this festival on Saturday?!Glenn got his start in the late 70s, when he moved to Hoboken and formed The A Band with Rob Norris, Richard Barone, and Frank Giannini. They would be the very first group to ever play at Maxwell’s, paving the way for countless other bands and musicians to grace its stage. From there, Glenn fronted other bands including The Individuals and a solo project, Rage To Live, in addition to his work as President of Bar None Records.Glenn currently fronts Glenn Morrow’s Cry For Help, who released their debut self-titled album in 2017 on Rhyme or Reason Records. They just released a brand new song, “Yellowed Pages,” and have a slew of other new songs up their sleeves!Lots of awesome stories in this episode, so tune in to hear all about how Glenn turned Michael Stipe on to the Replacements, his discovery of They Might Be Giants, some Alex Chilton stories, and much more!Don’t miss Glenn Morrow’s Cry For Help tomorrow at the North Jersey Indie Rock Festival! You can purchase the band’s debut album via Rhyme & Reason Records.
