Over the last two months, Turkey has thrown its weight behind Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the victorious Syrian rebel group who ousted Bashar al-Assad's government from power. Westen countries have labeled HTS a terrorist organization – yet, despite HTS's jihadi roots, Turkey has argued the group is capable of establishing a state that brings law and order and is dedicated to serving Syria's diverse population. For Syrian Kurds and other communities opposed to HTS governance, Erdogan's embrace of the Sunni government foreshadows a grim future where Turkey is the dominant foreign power in Syria. For Turkey's neighbors, Western allies, and fellow NATO members, Erdogan's actions are a warning sign that Turkey is trying to fundamentally restructure and reshape regional boundaries. In light of its ambitions for the Middle East and Arab world, how can Turkey's expansionist ambitions be best understood? What are the potential consequences for Turkey's neighbors in the Mediterranean? Will Turkey's NATO status mean less as the U.S. changes its relationship with the alliance? Can Turkey be trusted to be an honest power in Syria, or will Turkey's dreams yield a new sphere of influence? To explore these questions, FDD hosts a sideline session during the 6th Annual Delphi Economic Forum featuring the Cohen Chair in International Relations at Lehigh University and adjunct senior fellow for Middle East studies at the Council on Foreign Relations Henri J. Barkey; FDD Non-Resident Fellow and expert on Turkish domestic politics, Sinan Ciddi; former Minister of Migration and Asylum of Greece and current member of the Greece-Cyprus-Israel-US Interparliamentary Committee Dimitris Kairidis; and FDD Executive Vice President Jon Schanzer. The panel will be moderated by Lena Argiri, Washington Correspondent for Greek Public TV (ERT), with introductions by Endy Zemenides, Executive Director of the Hellenic American Leadership Council. For more, check out: https://www.fdd.org/category/events/

EPISODE 97 | Üst akıl – Totally Turkey Turkey is a place with a complex history and a diverse population, which can lead to a sense of uncertainty and instability. Conspiracy theories that offer simple explanations for complex events and interactions, seem to take hold easily there, especially lately. This can make it difficult for people to distinguish between reliable information and propaganda and can contribute to the spread of false information and conspiracy theories. All told, Turkey seems to be particularly susceptible to the spread of conspiracy narratives. Which is a darned shame, since the country is absolutely fascinating, with a long and rich history stretching back more than 40,000 years, fantastic food, a varied landscape and incredibly hospitable people. Kev and James return for the first of our monthly podcasts. Yes, in this inaugural Premier League season, we now release pre and post-match episodes every week but, as the longest-running Luton Town podcast, we have always delivered a bumper episode and we're not going to stop now. So, we hope you're enjoying our new content, including our video podcasts which you can find on YouTube, but as we're in the boring international break, the boys got together to offer our usual focus on two Hatters. In this episode, we look at two players that are already dividing opinions on social media after their summer switches. They are club record signing Ryan Giles and England international Ross Barkley. And with the transfer window shutting and those two additions just two of 12 new recruits, the boys discuss the deadline day signings of Teden Mengi from Manchester United and Albert Sambi Lakonga on loan from Arsenal. The move for the latter could hint at a change in the way Luton play and with one listener question asking us about a formation change, the boys drill down into what we can expect to see in the not too distant future. Having seen Premier League rivals up close, Kev and James also discuss what we've learned so far in the top-flight, plus the departure of fan favourite midfielder Glen Rea while also giving a shout-out to the Bury Park community for their patience as the Hatters spent 13 weeks over the summer upgrading their Kenilworth Road stadium to make it Premier League ready. ---------------------------------------------------------------- The Luton Town Supporters' Trust Podcast is now available as a video on YouTube and as an audio podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Soundcloud, Google Podcasts, Podbean, Podtail, Castbox, or wherever you get your podcasts. Karen Barkey talks about her research that stems from her fascination in the empire. She discusses how cultural diversity shaped the Ottoman empire. Karen Barkey's research has been engaged in the comparative and historical study of the state, with special focus on its transformation over time. Her work has explored state society relations, peasant movements, banditry, and opposition and dissent organized around the state. Her main empirical site has been the Ottoman Empire, in comparison with France and the Habsburg and Russian Empires. She also pays attention to the Roman and Byzantine worlds as important predecessors of the Ottomans.Created & Hosted by Mikey Muhanna, afikraEdited by: Ramzi RammanTheme music by: Tarek Yamani https://www.instagram.com/tarek_yamani/About the afikra Conversations:Our long-form interview series features academics, arts, and media experts who are helping document and/or shape the history and culture of the Arab world through their work. Following the interview, there is a moderated town-hall-style Q&A with questions coming from the live virtual audience on Zoom.
