Sheila McDonough chose to enlist in the U.S. Amy when she was a 30 year old mother of two. She found it to be the perfect place to be as she searched for her path in life. And she has written this book to help young people consider letting Army training open their eyes to possibilities. Or share it with their parents who may be resistent to the idea. It was the Army that led Sheila to make Alaska her home for close to 20 years. It was the Army that gave her management skills. She has a B.A. in journalism from the University of New Hampshire and, in true jounalistic style, made copious notes of her experiences in the Army that led to this personal look at the benefits of military training.

Gen. McGonegal most recently served as the Division Chief for Strategy and Policy in the Joint Manpower and Personnel directorate for the National Guard Bureau. The Strategy and Policy division provides personnel accountability of National Guard Service members during Domestic Operations. The division develops and coordinates Congressional, OSD, CNGB, JS-J1 and NGB-J1 products on National Guard manpower and personnel readiness concerns.Brig. Gen. McGonegal enlisted in the Virginia Army National Guard in September 1997. Upon completion of Basic Training, she attended the Virginia State Officer Candidate school in Ft Pickett, VA. While serving with the 229th Military Police Company, she deployed in support of Operation Noble Eagle in 2001, Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, and put on State Activation in support of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. During this time, she spent four years working as a county police officer but was deployed two years of that time. Her time as a police officer enhanced her career in the military but due to the deployments, she transitioned to serve in military full time. In April 2005, she was hired by the Army National Guard Bureau's Comptroller directorate as a Budget Officer.In 2012, Brig. Gen. McGonegal transitioned from the Virginia Army National Guard to the West Virginia Army National Guard to command the 151st Military Police Battalion. After battalion command, she served in a joint assignment with the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Policy, Homeland Defense and Global Security from 2014 to 2018. From August 2019 to July 2021, she served as Brigade Commander to the 77th Brigade Troop Command in the West Virginia Army National Guard. In recognition of her strengths in relationship building, communication, multi-tasking, and organizational leadership, Brig. Gen. On January 31, Film at Lincoln Center opened a landmark new retrospective titled Frederick Wiseman: An American Institution. The series showcases new 4K restorations of over thirty of the filmmaker's works, which together form a monumental survey of modern American life—with a frequent focus on the intersections of individuals and institutions. Wiseman just turned 95 on New Year's Day, and the FLC series comes on the heels of similar retrospectives in Chicago, Portland, Maine, and Vancouver—with more planned for Paris, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Boston, and beyond. How does one even begin to consider a body of work so sprawling, so rigorous, and so significant? Bob joined the United States Army (USA) in 2002 as part of Airborne Infantry, and served for 4 years, reaching the rank of Specialist (SPC).In this episode Bob talks about his journey in joining the U.S. Army, and what it was like going through Basic Training, then onto Army Airborne School. He shares what it was like being sent to the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment (1st of the 508th - Red Devils), in Italy, before being deployed to Iraq. This deployment saw his unit parachute into the country, being his 1st jump since Airborne School, and his 6th jump ever.Bob also shares what it was like returning home after 1 year away in a war zone, and then getting orders to join the 101st Airborne Division, at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. After arriving at the 101st, he deploys to Iraq for the second time, ahead of his transition back to civilian life. The cadets who graduated were part of Class 86 and received certificates from Commissioner William Marshall during the ceremony in Glenville. According to Gov. Jim Justice's office, the WVDCR has welcomed a total of 429 graduates into its ranks so far this year, nearly equaling the total amount in 2023, when 483 officers and staff graduated. In 2022 and 2023, the total rose to $10 billion, which includes planned projects promised to bring hundreds of new employment opportunities to the state. Form Energy, which manufactures multi-day, iron-air renewable batteries, announced its plan to invest in West Virginia at the end of December 2022. Form Factory 1 is expected to create a minimum of 750 new full-time jobs and will represent a total investment of up to $760 million.  In Mason County, Nucor continues to make substantive progress on its $3.1 billion sheet steel mill. The mill will employ as many as 2,000 workers during construction, and there will be up to 800 full-time employees when it becomes fully operational. The company has purchased additional property in the Northern Panhandle where it plans to contract a “trans-loading facility,” Carmichael said, adding another 75 to 100 jobs. The land will be added to the Monongahela National Forest adjacent to Blackwater State Park. State Division of Natural Resources Director of Technical Support & Services Travis Long said the purchase will help in the development of the Blackwater Loop Trail. The trail will connect near Douglas Falls and then take users on the other side of the North Fork of the Blackwater River where it will connect with the Allegheny Trail. An old rail grade, the trail will feature historic coke ovens at Coketon and Douglas as well as scenery along the Blackwater River. The completion of the loop trail is in conjunction with the completion of Corridor H in Tucker County. The DOH is wrapping up the environmental clearances for both the Parsons to Davis and Wardensville sections of the highway. I'm joined today by Air Force MSgt (Ret) Craig Kim.  Craig attended Taylor-Dewitt Middle-High School in Pierson, FL. After graduating in 1998, he spoke to an Air Force recruiter and decided to join at 17 as a 3P0X1 Security Forces. He attended Basic Training and Tech School at Lackland Air Force Base, TX. He was first assigned to the 45th Security Forces Squadron at Patrick AFB, FL. During that assignment he was deployed twice. When he returned he re-trained to Information Management and attended Tech School at Kessler AFB, MS. Upon graduation in 2002, he was assigned to Goodfellow AFB, TX. During that assignment he deployed to Jordan in 2003. In 2005, Craig's next assignment took him to NORAD-USNORTHCOM in Building 2 at Peterson AFB, CO.  In 2008, his AFSC was consolidated and he was placed in the IT Field.  He was next assigned in 2011 to the 39th Comm Squadron at Incirlik AB, Turkey.  Upon returning in 2012, he was assigned to the 460th Space Comm Squadron at Buckley AFB, CO.  In 2017, he was promoted to MSgt. In 2018, he took his final assignment at the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Organization in Reston, VA. Craig retired from the Air Force on 31 July 2020.

I sometimes surf social media in search of someone I think might be an excellent guest for this show. When I found retired US Army soldier Orvie B. Baker, Jr. I knew I had found true excellence! See, Orvie is a former SARC, Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, for the Army SAPRO (Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office). He has tons of experience as a sexual assault victim advocate and supervised and trained other Army SA victim advocates. Something even more extraordinary about Orvie is that after he retired from the Army, he went back to school and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Digital Cinematography! And now he's using that new-found love of movie making to produce a full-length documentary about the nation's first , located at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That was the post I found that made me want to reach out to Orvie…and I'm so glad I did! The fact that there is a Survivors Memorial blew me away! What a phenomenal idea!...but then to have someone with as much passion and zeal for victims and survivors as Orvie to come up with the idea to produce a documentary about the Memorial…boom!...mind blown! I just had to reach out to Orvie to see if he would be a guest on SASS, and fortunately for all of us, he agreed. Orvie goes into detail about how he found out about the Memorial, and what he did to start production of his documentary. This is a fascinating story, so don't miss this episode!! Accompanying Orvie's idea to produce his documentary, he also has a push going to get others interested in this project so that other memorials dedicated to survivors of sexual violence could be built in each state.
