On this episode the Founder of Cathartic Realism Films Claire Chubbuck stops by to share her amazing story of how to turn Tragedy into Purpose. Claire shares some of the unique projects she's working on and her views on the Metaverse. Don't miss this special episode. Who is Claire Chubbuck? Claire Chubbuck is an emerging female director that creates mission driven content that creates catharsis for those working on it - she calls it “Cathartic Realism”. Cathartic Realism is a genre where artists tell the story of their personal traumas to find healing through catharsis. A take on the “true story” trope, this genre allows artists to depict their truths - the way it felt to them, but with an ending where you win for the purpose of cathartic release. The only way we can let it go is to feel it. She works with actors to use the traumatic events in their lives to make art. Born in Los Angeles, California, Claire Chubbuck is the daughter of internationally celebrated acting coach, Ivana Chubbuck, and award-winning director/producer, the late Lyndon Chubbuck. After going to Scripps College in 2007 for Economics, she graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with honors (recipient of the Founders Award) and a BFA in Filmmaking in 2012. Straight out of the gate she worked at AMC Networks as a Programming and Scheduling executive. While working there, Claire began creating short form content for SundanceTV's International channels that was broadcast worldwide. In 2013, Claire worked as a producer on “Pussy Riot: The Movement”, the first comprehensive film that tells the full story - from arrest through release from prison and beyond - of the remarkable women who defied a strongman, survived Russian prisons and rallied the world behind them. The documentary also examines the perversion of the Russian Constitution by ex-KGB officer and President Vladimir Putin. In 2014, Claire moved to Participant Media, whose films include Good Night, and Good Luck, Syriana, An Inconvenient Truth, Food, Inc., Waiting for ‘Superman', The Help, Contagion and Lincoln. There she worked to launch a linear television network, Pivot. In 2015, Claire found her fiancé dead of tragic circumstances and, in one second, everything changed. Since then, she has been trying to help other people find an explanation for their traumas - enough to move forward without shame - with a unique community of artists that want to create. She found this community when she began teaching at Ivana Chubbuck Studios. As a teacher, she has found great pleasure in being part of inspiring others, many to great success. After spending time teaching, Claire reemerged with a new directorial debut in 2019 with ‘how I lost my virginity', a short film detailing her best friend's real-life experience of kidnapping and rape - intended to provide catharsis while looking at the systematic problem that allow for the victims of sexual assault to far outweigh the perpetrators. In 2020, “how I lost my virginity” won over 17 awards and was shown at several high-profile film festivals including Beverly Hills Film Festival, Chain Film Festival, Santa Monica International Film Festival, SF Indie Fest, Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival, Marina del Rey Film Festival, among others. Claire personally won “Best Direction” at the Best Shorts Competition in addition “Best First Time Director” at Canadian Cinematography Awards, New York Cinematography Awards (NYCA), and Top Shorts Awards. The first theatrical showing of the short was at Marina del Rey Film Festival, where the short won the Audience Award for “Best Short”. During the quarantine of 2021, Claire made an experimental film called (Corona) Viral Monologues, which had it's theatrical premiere at the Chinese Theater as part of the Silicon Beach Film Festival, where we were awarded the Audience Award for Best Narrative Short. This hour long special won “Best Artistic Film” at the Atlanta Award-Qualifying Film Festival 2022, “Best Narrative” at the Washington Film Festival, was a semi-finalist for “Best Ensemble” and “Best Experimental Film” at the Los Angeles Film Awards, and was an official selection for the Global Indie Film Awards. Claire also won Vegas Movie Award's Prestige Award for “Best Female Filmmaker” for this film. Claire currently has 2 short films in post-production, 2 short films in pre-production, and a feature film in development. “Hire me to direct!” Maria Capp knows that to get what you want you have to ask. She's been doing the big “asks” for years/ whether to pitch a project to Tubi, Hallmark, or Netflix, or to raise funds for original movies she is producing and writing, or to ask for the best cast members to lead one of her movies for TV. With a family-centric and female-centric approach to movie making, Maria Capp has always made it her business to be inclusive and to employ people of all colors, ages, and represent people of different ethnicities, being cognizant, respectful and sensitive to stories that are culturally specific. She wears different hats including that of writer, producer and director, and she loves directing the most. She has a musical theatre background so she thinks with music and plays out scenes in her head before she blocks them with actors. She considers herself an actor's director, and immersed herself in technique classes in the Ivana Chubbuck method of acting. Maria's movies are generally feel-good and she loves stories about families and coming of age and real relationships. She's directed with top actors that are loyal to her as they enjoy their on-set experience with Maria. What's next? Maybe a Western, or Psychological Thriller...Maria is currently pitching several movies for TV and in post production on a film she wrote and directed on Long Island, where she grew up, with an indigenous story line based on a myth, "lady of the lake," on the Island, "Lake Ronconkoma." Patricia Velásquez is our very first supermodel turned actress on the show! You Might Know Her From The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, The Curse of La Llorona, Arrested Development, Liz in September, American Family, and The L Word. Patricia opened up about her decision to publicly come out in her memoir Straight Walk : A Supermodel's Journey to Finding Her Truth on the heels of headlining Liz in September, the first Spanish language film about lesbians. We talked about how The Mummy Returns is lesbian canon, why her character on The L Word didn’t get more to do, and what it was like to be on the set of Arrested Development with a bunch of comedy men (and Liza!). All that, plus Patricia gives us the dream exercise that she used to make peace with La Llorona, and tells us tales of making history as the first Latina (and lesbian) supermodel, who happened to be in a relationship with Sandra Bernhard in the 1990s. Chris is an American actor, from New York but lived the last 10 years in LA. Having landed a lead role in the Steven Soderbergh movie The Girlfriend Experience, after intiially being a consultant for the film due to his fitness instructor background, Chris went on to feature in Perfect, another of Soderbergh's works. He also thinks he would be a friendly vampire muppet! Bio: Chris Santos, one of five children, was born in Long Island, New York. His first foray into acting was at the age of 12 in esteemed writer and producer Rob Weiss's (AMERICAN PSYCHO, “Entourage”) film AMONGST FRIENDS shot in his hometown on Long Island. Santos is best known for his breakout role in the feature film THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE (directed by Steven Soderbergh) where he played the male lead opposite Sasha Grey. The film, which centers around a high-end escort 'Chelsea/Christine' (Grey) and her boyfriend 'Chris' (Santos), has since been turned into a Golden Globe-nominated drama series, airing on Starz. Santos was introduced to the film by its acclaimed writer David Levien (OCEAN'S THIRTEEN, "Billions") who at the time was his client as a personal trainer living in New York. In fact, the character 'Chris' had so many similarities to Santos, that Levien and Soderbergh decided to cast him for the role. The film further solidified his taste for acting and since then, Santos has been working ferociously to fine tune and perfect his craft, training and completing master classes with Hollywood's premier acting coaches including Ivana Chubbuck, Deborah Aquila, Lesly Kahn, and Margie Haber. Chris went on to work with many great Hollywood actors, including Betty White. Chris has returned to the film festival circuit, co-starring in his second Steven Soderbergh film PERFECT which premieres at SXSW. Written and directed by the award-winning Eddie Alcazar, produced by Academy Award-winner Steven Soderbergh, and composed by Los Angeles based experimental multi-genre producer and rapper Flying Lotus, PERFECT tells the story of a young man with a violent past as he enters a mysterious clinic where the patients wildly transform their bodies and minds using genetic engineering. Co-starring Abbie Cornish, Martin Sensmeier and Maurice Compte, the psychological thriller fully captivates its audience, steering them along a thought-provoking journey while also providing a luxurious treat for science fiction fans. Santos additionally has the beautifully shot film SOMEDAY starring opposite Dominican actress Katherine Castro, which recently wrapped filming. The film follows two strangers who meet on a 14-hr flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. 'Adam' (Santos) is a world-famous composer, but 'Melody' (Castro) doesn't recognize her flight companion seated next to her. Along the way they pour their hearts out, forging a connection that is more beautiful, precisely because of its simple, fleeting nature. Santos currently resides in Los Angeles. When he is not acting or writing, the fitness enthusiast enjoys Thai boxing and Brazilian jujitsu. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Acting coach and writer Ivana Chubbuck has become one of Hollywood's most important one-to-one teachers. Over the course of a 30 year career, she has worked with some of the most famous A-list film stars. Instructing them in her own acting theory, the Chubbuck Technique, it's her aim to empower students to remain creatively strong in an industry as intense as the movies. Ivana's methods have been so revolutionary that her students are annually nominated for Academy Awards, Emmys and Golden Globes. Ivana's book, The Power of the Actor, was an instant bestseller. It outlines The Chubbuck Technique. The technique itself draws on real psychology and human behaviour as a basis for creating authentic characters and engage with the story. It's a 12 step program that helps actors immerse in their role, bringing scripts to life. There are hundreds of different coaches with hundreds of theories and techniques to choose from, but Ivana's masterclass is simple and extremely effective with the results to prove it.
