Join host Steve Perkins and Greenhouse Team members Gabe Smith and Chris Payne for a transformative dive into mindset on the Roots Up Podcast. Cutting through the buzzword noise, this episode explores how thoughts, emotions, and awareness shape leadership and personal growth. With humorous hiking anecdotes and raw insights, the trio unpacks the brain's role in processing emotions, the shift from victimhood to agency, and practical tools to foster mindfulness. Steve challenges shallow positivity, Gabe advocates slowing down, and Chris offers strategies for navigating workplace challenges, empowering listeners to take control of their mindset and growth journey. Key Discussion Points: Mindset's Physiological Roots: The brain processes sensory input through emotions before logic, shaping how leaders perceive and respond to challenges. Emotional Vocabulary Gap: Many lack language for emotions, leading to suppressed feelings or relational disconnect; tools like the Feelings Wheel bridge this gap. Thoughts to Beliefs Cycle: Daily thoughts form beliefs that drive behavior, making awareness of thought patterns critical for growth. Victim vs. Agency Mindset: A victim mindset blames external factors, draining energy, while an agency mindset embraces choice, fueling creativity and action. Energy and Mindset: High-energy states (playful, joyful) arise from agency; low-energy states (shame, fear) stem from feeling powerless. Beyond Growth vs. Scarcity: Workplace “growth mindset” narratives often oversimplify; true growth requires radical honesty and mindfulness, not forced optimism. Practical Mindset Shifts: Journaling, rituals (e.g., changing clothes to transition), and candid workplace conversations help leaders reclaim agency. Action Items: Self-Audit: Pause during daily transitions (e.g., morning routine, between meetings) to journal: How am I feeling? What thoughts are recurring? Use the Feelings Wheel for clarity. Team Check-In: Start a team meeting with, “How are we showing up today?” Use the Feelings Wheel or cards to foster emotional awareness. Find Agency: In tough situations, ask, “Where do I have choice?” Identify one step, like a candid conversation or renegotiating a role. Build Rituals: Create a small ritual (e.g., changing clothes after work) to trigger a mindset shift during transitions. Resources Mentioned: Greenhouse Coaching: Discover holistic coaching at Greenhouse Coaching. Feelings Wheel: Build emotional vocabulary at Feelings Wheel. Quotes: “Mindset is about reality—naming what's true in the moment, not just seeing the positive.” “Adults make agreements. If the agreement isn't working, renegotiate it.” Timestamps: (00:00:00) Intro (00:01:03) Hiking Stories (00:02:49) Why Does Mindset Matter (00:05:37) How Feelings Play Into Mindset (00:09:26) How Aware Are We of Thought Themes (00:10:15) The 2 General Mindsets (00:15:09) Growth vs. Scarcity Mindset (00:16:17) How to Shift Mindsets (00:23:45) Do We Always Have Agency? For this episode of Post-Growth Australia Podcast, we go international by welcoming our esteemed guest Timothée Parrique, who is based in France and Sweden. Timothée is an economist at the School of Economics and Management of Lund University (Sweden). He has built a steady reputation as a colourful writer and speaker on the fallacies of our growth-based economy and is a loud and proud advocate of Degrowth, Post-Growth and Steady State based solutions. Topics discussed with Timothée in this episode include: Reflections on the Degrowth movement within Europe, with particular focus on the 2023 Beyond Growth conference held at the EU parliament. Why “green growth” and economic decoupling are fallacies that are not backed by scientific evidence. Why demography is not an economic problem and why tinkering with demography won't provide economic solutions. Timothée's personal vision for a post-growth world (involving much more social equity and much less advertising). We think you will agree that Timothée is a fantastic speaker on these issues, whose colourful use of metaphor and imagery makes for an engaging conversation. We encourage you to read his article: “A response to The Economist: Shut up and let me grow (https://timotheeparrique.com/a-response-to-the-economist-shut-up-and-let-me-grow/)”. This was an assertive response The Economist who wrote a critique of the 2023 Beyond Growth Conference (https://www.beyond-growth-2023.eu/), titled “Meet the lefty Europeans who want to deliberately shrink the economy (https://www.economist.com/europe/2023/05/18/meet-the-lefty-europeans-who-want-to-shrink-the-economy).” Indeed. There are many great YouTube videos highlighting Timothée's impressive public speaking legacy. This Tedx Talk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gfulzow1LGU&t=22s) (which has attracted nearly 130 000 views) is in French, but if you don't speak the language, you have the option of English subtitles. We also recommend his talk at the Beyond Growth conference: “How to finance welfare without growth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Jpe4HVGJsI)?” He has also been interviewed on the Steady Stater Podcast. Otherwise, check out Timothée Parrique's website here (https://timotheeparrique.com/). PGAP has been delighted and humbled by the fantastic listener support that we received for our last episode with First Nations cultural educator Larry Blight. Milyen változást hozott 2023 a nemnövekedés népszerűségében? Mit gondolnak a nemnövekedésről az Európai Parlament képviselői? Leválthatja-e a nemnövekedés a jelenlegi zöld gazdasági növekedésre fókuszáló politikai ideológiát? Milyen változást hozott 2023 a nemnövekedés népszerűségében? Mit gondolnak a nemnövekedésről az Európai Parlament képviselői? Leválthatja-e a nemnövekedés a jelenlegi zöld gazdasági növekedésre fókuszáló politikai ideológiát?
In our quest for self-improvement, it's easy to focus solely on measurable progress—faster times, more significant achievements, and tangible results. However, growth extends beyond these external markers. In this episode, running coach Mario Fraioli joined me to discuss a topic we are both deeply passionate about: doing an activity for its own sake. As an elite athlete, writer, and coach, Mario has deep insight into how process, dedication, and commitment can bring satisfaction, regardless of the outcome. He shares the powerful shift in perspective that consistency comes from commitment and how much our mood can determine our understanding of progress. Plus, we talk about the significance of relationships and lifestyle in finding true fulfillment. Mario's wisdom has left a lasting impact on me, and I hope it resonates with you too. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The work itself can be the reward, not just external achievements or metrics. Growth doesn't always mean measurable progress - it can be internal too. Consistency comes from commitment to your values and goals. It's important to find fulfillment from relationships and lifestyle, not just outcomes. Pivoting requires honesty about what still serves your values and purpose. C40 and the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy are providing an opportunity for cities to rethink conventional economic systems, like capitalism, that have led to the climate crisis. It is abundantly clear that the economic rules and systems created after WWII have led to twin crises: climate change and continued inequality. It's necessary to unpack these theories to better understand their impacts and relation to climate breakdown and figure out more effective economic strategies that cities can use to restore justice and health to our planet. But what exactly do cities need to understand - and do - to make this happen?Featured guests:Sandrine Dixson-Declève is the co-president of The Club of Rome and an international climate change thought leader. Last month, Aotearoa had its own version. Environmental historian and author of 'Beyond Manapouri: 50 years of Environmental Politics in New Zealand' Dr Catherine Knight is asking us to reconsider what our financial system looks like. Has time run out for the Titanic sub? The chances of a rescue, if there ever was any chance, are very slim… The “Beyond Growth” conference in Europe advocates for the end of prosperity... Dennis talks to Ashley Rindsberg, investigative journalist. He presents the new PragerU video, “Russia Collusion and the Death of Journalism.” Dennis talks to Peachy Keenan, writer and housewife. Her new book is Domestic Extremist: A Practical Guide to Winning the Culture War. The LA Times is thrilled that Drag Queens are performing in front of small children in Laguna Beach, CA… Dennis returns to the Beyond Growth conference and plays a clip. There's a European Union supported group called Beyond Growth. They're on a mission to make everyone poorer. Prosperous people consume too many resources… The CEO of the company that made the Titanic sub doesn't want old “50-year-old white guys” on his team. He wants young people. They're more “inspiring.”…For the left, it's not merely enough to tolerate deviant behavior. We must celebrate it. Take pride in it… What happens to your life when your husband goes trans? What are the consequences to friends and family of someone going trans? This is one question that no one seems to ask. Dennis talks to Ann Atkinson former executive director of the T.W. Lewis Center for Personal Development at ASU's Barrett Honors College. Following a speech by Dennis and Charlie Kirk, ASU shut down the Lewis Center. Ann's WSJ piece about her travails has gone viral. Thanks for listening to the Daily Dennis Prager Podcast.
with Alix Geard. Recorded at Auckland Unitarian Church 4th June 2023. I wanted to share something about what the future might look like: especially something new about what's going on in the space around climate change and degrowth. I've been finding that quite depressing, though. I admit that I even asked ChatGPT for some examples of what I might say. The homilies it came up with were familiar, reassuring, anodyne and almost completely pointless. They did sound good, though. Instead, I want to throw some ideas at you about what people are like, and how we work together. The ideas are all a bit flawed – they're working notes and patterns to look out for – but I've found them useful. Seán Ó Conláin and Caroline Whyte exchange some initial thoughts on the European Parliament's recent conference, ‘Beyond Growth: Pathways Towards Sustainable Prosperity in the EU,” which they both attended from May 15-17. They considered it a seminal event and felt it was far too rich an experience to sum up in a half-hour podcast, and so they plan to discuss it further in future podcasts. In this podcast they shared their overall impressions, placing the conference in the context of highly unbalanced world trade system that strongly favours the Global North, and of a potential and very worrying swing to the right in next year's European elections. They also exchanged views on talks from the conference on economic models, the fiscal framework and the financial system, which were given in Plenaries 5 and 6 by Gael Giraud, Phillipa Sigl-Glöckner and Ann Pettifor.

We are joined in this episode by Richard Heinberg, one of the world's foremost experts on energy and sustainability. Using his latest book, Power: Limits and Prospects for Human Survival as the basis of our conversation, we unpack how humans have come to overpower Earth's natural systems and oppress one another and how we might address this. Richard challenges the techno-utopian absurdity of “green growth” and explains how unfettered human expansionism, even with a “green” tint, is incompatible with natural limits. We discuss how we might deliberately rein in our power, starting with an urgent transition away from fossil fuels, and move from a culture of unabated growth toward a culture of sufficiency, simplicity, and resilience. See episode website for show notes, links, and transcript: https://www.populationbalance.org/podcasts/richard-heinberg ABOUT US The Overpopulation Podcast features enlightening conversations between Population Balance Executive Director Nandita Bajaj, cohost Alan Ware, and expert guests. We cover a broad variety of topics that explore the impacts of our expanding human footprint on human rights, animal protection, and environmental restoration, as well as individual and collective solutions. Philippe Lamberts is advancing one of the most progressive agendas ever to reach the upper echelons of the EU power structure. This month the co-head of the Greens at the European Parliament will convene a conference that seeks to change, well, just about everything. The conference is called Beyond Growth — an umbrella term for thinking about how growth in a materially finite world is reaching its limits. All 1,500 seats have been snapped up and thousands of people are expected to watch via the Internet. But what's more remarkable is how Philippe got some of the EU's heaviest hitters to come along too. Among those expected to address the conference: Ursula von der Leyen, the conservative president of the European Commission. Her presence shows the growth debate is no longer "for loonies," says Philippe. But Philippe may also be cover for von der Leyen: she may want to be remembered as someone who at least tried to seek alternatives to growth models and metrics like GDP before the climate crisis worsens. For now, most policymakers are stuck on the idea that we'll be able to find a source of nearly unlimited high efficiency low carbon energy, and that we'll do so in time to avoid sharp declines in standards of living. The resulting inertia infuriates activists like those who disrupted the Brussels Economic Forum this month. They are demanding that the EU jettison an "ideology of infinite economic growth" without delay. But such demands sit awkwardly with winning steady and sustained buy-in from lobbies and voters. So how to face the future with the odds stacked so heavily against a satisfactory outcome? Philippe starts this episode with thoughts on how his Christianity informs his thinking on Beyond Growth — and on how his faith helps him deal with the existential questions we all must now live with.Support the show

Intractable racism, increasing inequality, and intensifying climate change—for author and environmental activist Bill McKibben, these are some of the legacies wrought by the growth of American suburbs during the past forty years. On this episode, McKibben joins Commonweal associate editor Griffin Oleynick to speak about his new memoir, The Flag, the Cross, and the Station Wagon, which identifies the 1970s as the pivotal decade that marked a definitive shift toward individualism. Our problems are real, but not insurmountable, McKibben argues. Our situation can be improved by organizing for change, and reclaiming American symbols of patriotism, faith, and fairness. What?? State, County and Local governments have budgets way above their population growth and inflation combined? How can that be? Kendall Cotton of the Frontier Institute explains.
Most leaders want to grow their business. And many work too hard to make that happen. But purpose-driven leaders and entrepreneurs look beyond growth to consider the impact they want to make through their business. They want to make the world a better place. The good news is they don't always have to work so hard in the process. Clear focus on priorities is key Find the full show notes at: https://workmatters.com/Going-Beyond-Growth-to-Make-the-World-a-Better-Place-with-CEO-Chanie-Gluck
Nothing is so intertwined with human success and folly as economics. The economy, for better or for worse, drives much of our fate from our household budget to our national policies to the outbreak of war. But economic activity also has profound effects on the environment and a close inspection of economics opens the question of whether humans can live sustainably on the only planet we have. The field of economics that focuses on sustainability and the environmental costs of economic activity is ecological economics. With us to discuss this field is one of its founders, Herman Daly. Herman received a B.A. in economics from Rice University in 1960 and a PhD in from Vanderbilt University in 1967. He was a professor of economics at Louisiana State University until 1988, and then served as senior economist in the environment department of the World Bank until 1994. He then joined the faculty at the University of Maryland in the School of Public Affairs. Herman is the author of over 100 articles in professional journals, as well as many books, including: Toward a Steady-State Economy (1973), Steady-State Economics (1977), Valuing the Earth (1993), Beyond Growth (1996), Ecological Economics and the Ecology of Economics (1999), Ecological Economics: Principles and Applications (2004), and Ecological Economics and Sustainable Development (2007). He is co-author with theologian John B. Cobb, Jr. of the award-winning book, For the Common Good (1989). He also co-founded the journal Ecological Economics and the International Society of Ecological Economics. Herman has received too many awards to list here, but they include Sweden's Honorary Right Livelihood Award, the Heineken Prize for Environmental Science from the Netherlands, the Sophie Prize for Environment and Development from Norway, the Medal of the Presidency of the Italian Republic, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Council for Science and the Environment, and the Blue Planet Prize.
Five months ago, Gaya's work led to headlines like Yep, it's bleak, says expert who tested 1970s end-of-the-world prediction. The 1970s predictions weren't exactly predictions, but the headline refers to the book Limits to Growth. If you're not familiar with it, we start by talking about it. We both consider its views and analysis among the most important. The book simulated possible outcomes for humans on Earth. Those outcomes varied from lots of happy people to billions dying. The authors' goals were to show what patterns we might expect.Still, people since have wondered if we and Earth have tracked any of those outcomes. Gaya's work does just that and shows that we have a slim chance of avoiding collapse, but a good chance of hitting it. I am amazed at how well those models track so many measurable outcomes in disparate areas. Our conversation covers her research, what it means, how to understand it, her work with companies, systems, solutions, and how these things affect our personal lives. Limits to Growth, Gaya's work, and what to do about them are among the most important things we can understand.
