Congratulations on deciding to become a blogger! Do you need to write your first blog post but you don't know what to write? You've probably never classified yourself as a writer at all. To put it bluntly, you don't see why anyone would ever be interested in your content. The English Literature class at school was super boring for you. Writing English compositions and similar essays were the least pleasurable homework assignments during high school. If only you had a pet dog that ate your homework it would've been a good idea and the perfect excuse. Tell me if you can also relate to these. Despite your checkered past when it comes to writing long form essays, you want to give blog writing your best shot. There's so much information out there about what to write that it has left you confused. Technical blogging terminology sounds too scary to understand and you feel a little lost. You just need a way to start your blog off right to avoid future regrets. In this post, you'll learn everything you need so that you can write your first blog post confidently and get your first 1,000 blog readers as well. Latest Blogging Statistics Before diving into this first blog post guide let's spend some time looking at the statistics when it comes to blogging. It's important to look at blogging statistics because it will give you a frame of reference. So, you already know that there are close to 8 billion people on planet earth at the moment. However, you may not know that there are over 1.7 billion websites and about 600 million of them are blogs. That's about 13 people for each and every blog. In terms of active bloggers in the US alone there are about 32 million. If you will be blogging for the USA, don't let that number worry you because blogging categories are endless. The current rate of newly created blog posts stands at 70 million new posts a month. While that may all sound overwhelming you also need to be aware that there are close to 90,000 searches conducted on Google every second. Those searches include people looking for content that you have not even written yet. Bloggers who spend 6 hours or more on a blog post report a 31% increase in results. If you can't see yourself spending that much time on a blog post yet don't worry right now. Here's a strange statistic, 73% of people prefer reading articles less than 1,000 words long. On the flip side of that, blogs earning $50,000 or more a year have blog posts averaging 2,500 in length. To summarise these statistics in a lump, profitable bloggers are those who spend 6 hours or more crafting blog posts that are 2500 words long as they attract some of those 90,000 searches per second. This will all make sense in a bit so stick with me until the end. Types of Blogs If you have been doing some research you'll notice that there are all different types of blogs that you can create. In fact, when I first started blogging over 10 years ago these blog types weren't as clear cut. After creating over 100 blogs I can tell you that getting this right is super important. The reason for this is that your blog type will determine the type of blog posts that you create for years to come. Here's a list of the different types of blogs. NicheGuestTeachingJourneyLifestyleCuration Let's briefly look at each one to help you decide your chosen blog type. Niche As the name suggests a niche blog is one that is super focused on one specific topic. When I say super focused, I mean that the topic is very narrow. A great example of a super-focused topic is gaming mice for left-handed gamers. What is unique about this blog type is that there's no need to write hundreds of blog posts. The flip side of that is that you may need to create 10 different niche blogs to achieve your income goals. FREE! How many of you like free stuff that is actually worth something? I am Ron Ramsden, a DYB coach, and a painting contractor in Massachusetts. I like things that are free, as long as they are going to help me save time or help my business down the road. What am I talking about? I am talking about Banana-Tag. Some of you might be thinking, “What is Banana-Tag?” and some of you might be thinking, “I already use Banana-Tag.” There are 3 different perks of Banana-Tag. I am only going to talk about the free version today, to get the most out of it. What is Banana-tag? Banana-Tag tracks emails, lets you schedule emails, and it also gives you email templates. These are the three points we are going to look at today. What is it and where do you find it? Go to Google chrome store and type in “Banana-Tag”. You open it and you just hit install. It works both with Gmail and Outlook. I use Gmail but you can also use it for Outlook. When you’ve installed the plugin, it will automatically sync with your Gmail account. You can turn it on and off anytime. You’ll find the Banana-Tag symbol right at the top and if you want to turn it off, you can slide the little bar and it would shut itself off. What is it going to do for you that’s going to make your life easier? The following are a few points that will help you understand it better: 1. Schedule Emails Why would you want to schedule an email? Maybe you’re up late at night or up early in the morning and you are doing your jam session. A jam session is a time when you really concentrate on a few things in your business and get them done without any distractions. So maybe you send something out at 5 o’ clock in the morning, there is a good chance that the person you are sending it to might have gotten 30-50 emails over the evening, depending on what kind of job they have, and yours could possibly get lost in the shuffle. You might want to send it at 8:15 or 10:30 or 11 o’ clock. You might be typing something which is not important and they shouldn’t actually get it until Wednesday or Thursday of this week, you can schedule it out to be sent at that time. It’s free and it works great! 2. Track Emails When you have installed the Banana-Tag plug-in and you see an email, there is going to be a little check box at the bottom you check off for tracking an email or not. For the free version you can use this 5 times per day. If you want to do it more than that then you would have to upgrade. I believe it’s $20 a month and that will give you 200 emails tracked per day. You might have 5 emails that you think are the most important ones, you can track them using this plug-in. You might be sending someone an invoice and you want to make sure that they got it. You are not only tracking it but when they open that email, Banana-Tag is going to send you an email back and tell you that they have opened it. Whether you are sending a proposal, an email, payroll or you’re sending something to your lawyer, and you want to make sure that they’ve received it, it’s only the click of a button. It’s a possibility that you might have sent a proposal through Gmail, for whatever reason, and you haven’t heard from them in quite a long time. If they ever open up that email again, you are going to find out that they’ve opened up that email again, automatically. They might have opened it up 6 months ago, but if they open it up now you’ll be notified by Banana-Tag immediately. I have actually received email notifications of opens that are over a year and a half old. When you get something like that, maybe it’s time to send that person an email at that point and say, “whoa, what a coincidence!” 3. Templates If you are like me, some of the emails you write will be the same. Today I was asking someone for a Google review and the subject of my Google review email says “Could you do me a small favor?” After that I tell them how important reviews are and then I put a link in there so they can easily click through it. A few years ago, I used to have this format and I would just copy and paste it. Now, I just write a template for it and when I want to send an email, I just put their name in the subject line, go over to the template bar and I click the template. It drops down the few emails I have I there. I click on it and it auto-fills the entire email for me. So easy! It’s a great way to save time if you are sending the same emails over and over. It might be an email you only send once a week, or an email to your payroll company. It can be an email to your entire crew, it can be a newsletter, or it can be something you want to send to your past customers. It might be a “thank you,” email or something like that and you are sending the same one over and over, then why write it? It’s a template and it’s free. These were the 3 different points I wanted to explain. You can track your emails. You can track them from now and as long as you have that tag on it, it will just keep telling you every time they open it. You can schedule an email. Great times so you don’t get lost in the midst of things. Then last but not the least, your template, so you are not writing over and over again. In the last episode, episode 83, we talked about three different types of blogger's block. Those were coming up with ideas for your blog post, writing the blog post themselves, then completing your blog post. Three areas where I know bloggers do get stuck. This whole series is really about getting unstuck, battling that blogger's block that so many of us face. This particular area of coming up with ideas to write about is probably the most common area that I find bloggers are struggling with. After it happened about a year into your blog when you've been through many of those initial ideas that you had when you started out, you generally have a whole heap of ideas. Sometimes, too many ideas. Then, you run out. You feel like sometimes, you've written everything there is to say, you've written everything that you know to talk about, and everyone else has already written everything and you come out against, "What could I write that's fresh? What could I write that's going to have any impact upon my readers? What could I write that's going to stand out from everyone else?" This is something that many of us struggle with. It's actually one of the reasons a number of bloggers that I've come across over the last year or two have given up blogging. It’s actually like they have nothing left to say. It's all about answering that question 'what should I blog about today???' that may bloggers struggle a lot with each day when they sit down to blog. The idea today is to spend some time ahead of time answering that question so that next time you sit down to blog you can get straight into creating some great content. In todays Episode A trap that many bloggers face when it comes to coming up with ideas for their blog Two reasons why brainstorming ahead of time what to write about is so important A process I used on Digital Photography School to come up with hundreds of blog post ideas (enough for my first couple of years of blogging) A variety of other techniques and suggestions for coming up with blog post ideas - some which are based upon some of the previous episodes in this podcast series including setting up alerts and subscriptions you set up yesterday, emailing a reader, heading to the forum or group you've joined, social media accounts etc How to tap into your own problems, questions and challenges to get content ideas The challenge to set up an ideas collection system (I mention I use Evernote) A couple of visuals from the exercise I suggest today: 1. describe the change you want to take your blog readers through: 2. break down that change that you wish to bring: Your Challenge Today Brainstorm at least 10 blog post ideas that you could use in the days and weeks ahead.
