In this week's episode, we are checking in with Dr. Kate Stafford about the state of the Arctic. Dr. Stafford talks about her latest trip back and what's been going on with the Bowhead whale in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, north and northwest of Alaska. Dr. Stafford talks about the rapid pace of the melting ice, and the impact this is making not only to the sweet Bowhead whale but to the Inupiaq people of Alaska. It's a chilling recounting of what she is seeing out on the melting ice. We are left with more questions than answers but one thing we know, the Bowhead whales are in trouble. We last spoke with Dr. Stafford in our previous episode #11 called The Song Birds of the Ocean. Please listen to that conversation if you haven't already. Lots of Love. Think Out Loud
How melting Arctic sea ice is affecting the migration patterns of bowhead whales

Think Out Loud

Bowhead whales are an endangered species of whale that spend their entire lives in the icy waters of the Arctic. They migrate north through the Bering Strait in the summer and fall to catch krill and other tiny crustaceans, and then travel south for the winter to the Bering Sea. But now, the rapid rate of melting Arctic sea ice due to climate change appears to be changing those migration patterns. Using 12 years of underwater recordings of bowhead whale songs, scientists at Oregon State University recently discovered that the whales have been delaying their migration through the Bering Strait in the fall, or opting to not pass through it at all during the winter months. Kate Stafford is an associate professor at the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute in Newport. She joins us to talk about the findings and what they mean for the health of bowhead whales, the ecology of the Arctic, and the Indigenous communities that embark on biannual whale hunts off the coast of Alaska.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I listened for a long time to the field recording.  There is the haunting sounds of the Bowhead whales, buried deep within the ambient sounds surrounding them.  I was inspired by the melody and musical slides (or moans!) I could hear in the whale calls. The constant ambient sound of the environment, and perhaps of scientific equipment also, was a sonic companion within the field recording, and I imagined a seascape of musical ideas playing with the whale sounds under the ice, for the composition. I sampled acoustic musicians to create a composition to weave around and play with the whales' calls, at times imitating the various melodies and ambient noises.  I also played with subtly panning the various sampled instruments - as a kind of echo to the whales' songs which often signal geographic locations to others. All the while, also informing the composition, is the tragic  rapidly changing environment these beautiful animals are navigating. Sampled musicians: Gideon Brazil: saxophone & bass clarinet Rodrigo Salgado: double bass Elissa Goodrich: vibraphone" Bowhead whale reimagined by Elissa Goodrich. "Bowhead whales are magnificent creatures that can grow to 60ft long and can live to around 200 years.  They are predominantly solitary creatures or found in small pods of up to six.  These aspects of age, solitude and memory (they were commercially whaled up until the 1960s) have inspired my submission.    "I've created a chord progression and used layered orchestral sounds with a fairly sparse arrangement.  Part of the whale's call from the recording has been processed with delay and reverb but I wanted to include the whole recording in its entirety to highlight their vocalisation." Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I was mesmerized by this field recording. The bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) is the only surviving member of the genus Balaena. The song is inspired by my own encounter with a bowhead whale in the coastal Alaskan Arctic. I was on station in an ice field in September 2018, to do some field research. I remember seeing some object in the water and pointing it out to my colleagues. We decided it was a floating log. A few minutes passed; our boat had drifted closer to the object, bringing it into clearer view, transforming it into a sleeping bowhead whale. Each of us took a great pause and marveled at its breath just a moment before it gently disappeared into the depths. "The first part of the piece has a sort of muddiness to it that plays off the separation between us and these massive oceanic mammals. In the second part of the piece, there is a clarity which echoes one I've had when experiencing the imaginative leap required to enjoy something like whale watching. We really see so little of these creatures, even during the rare breaches. To seek out a whale is to seek out a glimpse made powerful through imagination and understanding. The last part is what I imagine swimming in the ocean as a whale is like.  "The sort of negative space heard in many underwater recordings is so full and encompassing. I thought it was important to leave some of that “noise” in with an added filter and slow modulation to simulate the ocean waves. Beyond the noise, the song of this bowhead whale was also quite majestic and inspired me to harmonize with it while allowing the original bowhead song to fade in and out. There was also some interesting aliasing going on with the field recording which I mirrored in the first part of the piece. There are many layers to this piece, and, for me, it is quite fitting knowing that the ocean is deeply multidimensional and dynamic." Bowhead whale reimagined by Daniel Koestner. Part of the Polar Sounds project, a collaboration between Cities and Memory, the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"My collaborator Hansine and I were surprised by the expressiveness of the Bowhead Whale call and how the spacing between the calls seemed to be awaiting a response. Our idea initially was to have a conversation with the whale, with Hansine's vocals personifying a responding whale. "We were recording alone in a cabin in the hills of Santa Cruz with just ourselves, a bass, a drum machine, and the sample and the song came together in just a few hours, eventually becoming a sort of love song. It ended up making sense, as Bowhead Whales are typically most vocal in mating season, and otherwise are often solitary, and maybe lonely? "Based on the love song aspect and the species latin name Balaena mysticetus, we named the track. The whale call can be heard looping throughout the track, is sampled to create percussive elements, and also feeds a granular synthesizer to create textures." Bowhead whale reimagined by Avery Bick. We've got a great show for you today, but first, we think a little context is important. Please listen to Daniel's monologue in the introduction to this podcast.
As a podcaster, Daniel's always been interested in topics that flirt around the edges of the taboo. And today's episode certainly qualifies. Hunting itself has become controversial in our modern era, which, given that this was our primary food acquisition method for something like 300,000 years — in other words, our entire existence — until just recently, seems strange. But even where the general public has accepted it as a legitimate pursuit and method of protein procurement, there are some animals that — despite the long legacy of hunting them — are just too off-limits to talk about. Usually, these animals fall into a category we call “Charismatic Megafauna,” and you know these species well, since they're the subject of documentaries, calendars, cartoons, and stuffed animals. Often, the public is so opposed to the hunting them that, even when management is required due to deprivation, attacks on humans, or localized carrying capacity issues, they'd rather pay state-funded shooters to kill them as part of a management program than to allow hunters to pay into the state to harvest them through lawful hunting. Because, it's about optics. Someone enjoying the experience is just too distasteful to them. Things get even more complex when there is an indigenous tradition of hunting these charismatic species. Beluga and Bowhead whales come to mind, or African elephants, or — as is the case with today's podcast, Polar Bears. Today's guest is Jen Shears. Jen is a Newfoundlander, mom, wife, adventurer, business owner, blogger, traveler, and hunter — and she has been confronting the very same issues that Daniel speaks about in this episode's intro monologue for years. Recently she visited the arctic to hunt a polar bear herself, and Daniel was incredibly interested to talk with her about the experience, the politics, the science, and, of course, the meat, which he's been curious about for years. Jen is, in our opinion, incredibly brave and fearless in her willingness to publicly confront the media-driven, unscientific public rhetoric and even to weather the frenzied reactions of the activists who support the anti-hunting agenda being promulgated by the pseudo-scientific wing of the environmentalist movement. Jen, thank you for taking this issue on, being willing to due so publicly, and for talking about it here on this show. We appreciate and value what you are doing and saying. In this special inserted episode of Shaping The Future, we are discussing the 15th National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (or NOAA) Arctic Report Card that was published this week giving a detailed overview of how climate is changing the Arctic. Zack helps to break down the complexity of this annual report and highlights some of the major impacts that climate change is bringing to the polar Arctic region. With melting sea ice, extreme wildfires and the expanding population of Bowhead whales, the Arctic is a region changing before our eyes and one that has direct implications for weather patterns at lower latitudes. What is happening in the Arctic is literally the bellwether for the accelerating climate trends we see throughout the biosphere. It is also a ringing reminder for why we need to drastically cut emissions immediately and reduce atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases. Zack also gives us his personal view on whether geoengineering should be considered as part of a wider strategy for cooling or refreezing the Arctic. Thank you for listening to Shaping The Future - the Arctic report card is linked to in the notes below. Subscribe to the podcast on any of the main podcasting channels. We return to the Arctic to talk about the oldest living mammals on the planet, the Bowhead Whale. These incredible aquatic mammals can live well over 200 years old and were hunted to near extinction in the early 20th Century. Today, the Bowhead is on the rebound but still needs our attention as the Arctic continues to suffer due to climate change. We discuss all sorts of interesting facts, to include how they determine the whales ages, and how these whales can even benefit humanity. Patreon: Please considering supporting us at Patreon HERE. The Wheelchair Mountain Bike – Bowhead Corp (Chris Bagg and Will Gill) – Ep67 23 years ago, Chris Bagg broke his back snow boarding. Chris was very into outdoor sports and wanted to continue his activities as a parapalegic. Chris built his own custom wheelchair first. He needed this because all the stock chairs were too small for his 6 foot 8 inch size. Next, he started working on his off-road wheelchair bike. He “modeled” the bike first using paper and foam, just to work on the concept. Then he started getting prototypes made from using Solidworks and creating waterjet cut parts. Chris later brought in a Solidworks expert and engineer Will Gill. This is when their company Bowhead Corp was born. They now have a few products such as the Bowhead Reach and the Bowhead Traveler. You should go to their website and check out their pictures and videos in action.
