Bio Caroline Wright is a cook, writer and terminal brain cancer patient. During her undergraduate education in Paris, Caroline was inspired to turn a life-long interest and passion for food into a career. Caroline attended the La Varenne culinary program with Anne Willan in Burgundy, then started her career writing and styling recipes as a food editor for Martha Stewart's Everyday Food magazine, which folded in 2012. Her original recipes have appeared in a variety of national magazines since, including Cooking Light, Southern Living, Every Day with Rachael Ray, Real Simple and Health. While writing articles, she authored three cookbooks: Twenty Dollar, Twenty-Minute Meals (Workman 2013) and Cake Magic! (Workman 2016), two personal books that capture her fresh and friendly recipe style, plus another that transformed the recipes of a Catalan chef and restauranteur into home cooking, Catalan Food (Clarkson Potter 2018). Then, in 2017, Caroline was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. After her diagnosis, Caroline shifted her diet, started a vegan soup club for her friends in Seattle who cooked for her when she was sick. She began writing personal essays regularly about her cancer as it relates to food on her blog called “The Wright Recipes,” as well as on other major online publications including Food52, The Kitchn and Bon Appétit. She wrote a children's book for her sons about her enduring love, entitled “Lasting Love,” published by Rodale Kids (a Random House imprint) in August 2019, and has another children's series about baking by HarperCollins called Little Bakers that was released in Fall 2021. Caroline lives in Seattle, Washington with her family. My guest this week is cook and author Caroline Wright. At the age of 32, Caroline was diagnosed with a brain tumor and given one year to live. Three years later she’s beaten the odds, and is full of enthusiasm and hope and vitality. We discussed her very moving children’s book Lasting Love (affiliate link), which is a love letter to her children and also to any family dealing with the loss of a loved one. To be honest, this was not the conversation I was expecting. I thought we’d talk a lot about the pain and sadness of saying good-bye, but instead we talked about things like the profound lifestyle changes Caroline has made since her diagnosis, her ongoing work as a cookbook author, learning to live with fear, and finding what makes you happy regardless of circumstance.

How do you talk to kids about death? Author Caroline Wright wondered the same thing when she was diagnosed with an aggressive, terminal brain cancer as a mother to her young sons. Now, having lived a year past her prognosis and written a children’s book to help children know the undying love of a parent, Caroline joined us at Town Hall with a mission to help other parents find hope and agency with similar diagnoses. Wright was joined by a panel of leading experts in the fields of children’s bereavement and cancer to discuss the complicated issue of what to say to our kids to comfort them when facing loss. They outlined strategies for talking about tragedy with children, and highlighted the importance of building community during times of loss. Wright offered us tools for helping our children navigate grief—tools which we can use to face tragedy in our own lives and overcome grief ourselves. Caroline Wright is a cook, author, and terminal brain cancer patient. After her diagnosis she focused her career on her two sons and the connection that comes from telling her story. She’s written three cookbooks and is the author of Lasting Love, her children’s book about the enduring love of a parent. Caroline lives in Seattle, Washington with her family. In 2017, Caroline Wright was working on her third cookbook and raising two kids with her husband. Life was busy and full in only the way it can be when you have two kids under the age of five. Then one day everything changed. It was the day she was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor, and given a year to live. After surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and radical changes to her lifestyle and diet, Caroline is now considered cancer free. Since her diagnosis she’s written a memoir about her experience based on the Caring Bridge site she used to keep family and friends updated. She also wrote and published a beautiful children’s book, Lasting Love, as a way to help her children know her love will always be with them, no matter what happens. www.carolinewrightbooks.com

When you don't sweat the small stuff and just write I was lucky enough to get connected to Caroline Wright and immediately wanted her to come on the show. She has that groovy job so many of us have dreamed of, food stylist, recipe creator and big glossy cookbook author. Swoon! However, there's much more than meets the eye to Caroline. Several years ago, she was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor and given a very short prognosis by her doctors. Miraculously, she's surpassed their expectations and is currently healthy. But what changes about your career when you've just spent more than a year setting everything aside and trying to get well. How does your work change when every day feels like bonus time? I am so grateful to have had this conversation with Caroline and I feel even more excited about it because I get to share it with all of you. Caroline really is a gift. In this episode the sisters make it clear that Strega Nona has committed a cardinal sin. Not the creation of magic (the priest and nuns seem a-okay with her on that point). Food writer Caroline Wright talks cake and answers the random question, is cheesecake a cake or a pie? Plus Legos love the Beatles. This bite-sized chunk of Episode 293 is sponsored by Aquasana.
Today's show is tasty and delicious. Let's start with our interview with Caroline Wright, which isn't until the segment 6 of today's show...but worth waiting for. Her book, Cake Magic, offers up 100 recipes for cake. CAKE! Seems like enough for a show, but there is so much more, like General Contractor supreme, Steve Cederquist from HGTV's Flip or Flop with all kinds of tips about flipping houses and buying a house, what to look for in the construction of the home and some funny stories about stuff he's found. Travel Guy Gary Warner has tips on holiday travel and he explains why he doesn't recommend sites like Priceline. Bob Duke, PhD, one half of the show, Two Guys on Your Head, answers the most (and least) pressing questions about your mind. Manny the Movie Guy reviews Ben Affleck's new movie about an autistic accountant who kicks butt. AND, find out why Manny checks in from a suite in the Four Seasons Hotel, Beverly Hills. #Swanky! And there's breaking news! We get a news-maker call from the husband and wife team who are the new North American Wife Carrying Champions. What? Plus gonzo Greg and Phil Hulett offer their stories, including: Bob Dylan: Nobel Laureate, National No-Bra Day, Recreational Marijuana on the November ballot, Cuban Cigar restriction lifted...kind of, Samsung Note 7 fire and explosions trumped up by operatives at Apple? Creepy Clown update, Brain implant restores feeling and movement, Lego goes Fab and Gear with a special Beatles design, What's worse than getting your lady a teddy bear for her birthday? It starts with a Poke and ends with a Mon and THEY are Enormous! And finally, here's one way to keep the riff raff out: a Social App for rich snobs that'll cost you $1,000 a month to be a member.

There is a cake soulmate out there for every person and every moment, if you just know where to look. Take chocolate. A purist savors its pristine richness, yet for others chocolate is best enjoyed married with fresh mint, bourbon, caramel, coconut, chiles, or perhaps just a hint of salt. If cake is a canvas to paint our flavor fantasies upon, then a cookbook that treats its endless variations and delightful possibilities with the proper reverence is long overdue. Ingeniously applying a Choose Your Own Adventure–style methodology to the art of baking mouthwatering cakes for every taste, CAKE MAGIC! Mix & Match Your Way To 100 Amazing Combinations is an utterly new, highly-visual kind of cookbook that showcases beautiful color photos of every cake in the book to choose from in the front, followed by core recipes in the back. And, to ensure that everyone really is able to have their cake and eat it, too, Wright includes gluten-free and vegan variations for nearly every cake, syrup, and frosting in the book. She also shares indispensible tips on adapting the method to all pan shapes, measuring ingredients, making substitutions, troubleshooting wonky cakes, freezing baked cakes, and extremely simple frosting and decorating techniques. Armed with a plethora of delicious flavor adventures to choose from and easy-to-follow instructions for how to get there, the cake’s destination is up to you. CAKE MAGIC! just offers 100 great reasons to make the trip. Introducing an innovative and remarkably easy new way to make 100 delectable, flavorful cakes, author CAROLINE WRIGHT shares a simple five-ingredient homemade dry mix that forms the foundation for every cake in the book. From there, it’s just a matter of mixing and matching a batter, a flavoring syrup (the professional baker’s secret weapon that imbues the cake with additional flavor and moisture), a frosting, and the occasional topping. By following Wright’s mix-and-match method, it’s possible to introduce nearly endless changes on the same basic cake batter just by switching up the flavoring syrups and frostings.
