The Latest on Signgate Starts at 1:00 The developments that have developed are basically nothing. Feels like we know pretty much what there is to know, it's just a matter of what happens next from the NCAA. Michigan could be the first program hit with the NCAA's new rule of "if a staffer gets in trouble, the head coach also gets in trouble". There's some failure on the part of Warde Manuel. What is the actual competitive advantage of stolen signals? College football coaches are the most paranoid people in America. Based on how the NCAA has handled these issues, it seems extremely unlikely that anything will happen to Michigan this season. Worst case scenario would be Jim Harbaugh gets a show-cause a year or two down the road. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Michigan Men's Basketball Backcourt Starts at 22:37 Dug McDaniel is the most established guard. Freshmen point guards can be shaky, McDaniel's trajectory for his sophomore year is encouraging. Jaelin Llewellyn is your next most established guard. We didn't see a lot of him last year since he tore his ACL but he should be full go by now. Hard to know how much we're getting back from him after his injury. Nimari Burnett transfers as a rotation player from an Alabama team that was the 3rd best defense in college basketball last year. His offensive upside is unknown, Charles Matthews is a good comparison. George Washington III was described by Dug McDaniels as a good shooter but probably won't see more than 10 minutes per game. Jace Howard is listed as a guard but it's unlikely that he'll be a lot more than he was last year.  3. Michigan Men's Basketball Frontcourt Starts at 45:38 Takes hotter than Edward Norton Jr. after seeing Connor Stalions on the sidelines at CMU and he's like "I GOT THIS ROLE. THIS IS ALL ME, BABY". Tarris Reed is your starter, who is also Not Hunter Dickinson. He was slightly better defensively than Hunter Dickinson but the offensive drop-off was much bigger. Also needs to be better than 40% at free throws! Olivier Nkamhoua was a big contributor for the #1 defense in the country last year. That is already a huge upgrade defensively at the 4. He won't solve all your problems but is a very good, veteran basketball player. Seth thinks the final starting spot is Terrance Williams II, Brian thinks it's Tray Jackson. Will Tschetter: exists. Youssef Khayat could be a guy.  4. 2023-2024 Men's Basketball Overview Starts at 1:21:19 Making the tournament is a reasonable goal for this team. Where is Michigan going to get their points from? This gets made up by the massive defensive improvements. Michigan loses Jett Howard to the NBA but Michigan was a better team without Jett Howard. Juwan Howard is still recovering from heart surgery and has not been available in the pre-season coaching. There are going to be some hiccups with this team but all the transfers coming in are very experienced players from good teams. The vibes were awful last year but should be much better this year.  MUSIC: “U-Love”— J Dilla “Crosshairs”— Dangerdoom, MFDoom “Smooth Aisles”—  Michael Nau “Across 110th Street”

Men's Basketball vs Wisconsin starts at 1:00 Not firmly in the tournament but firmly on the bubble. Brian talks through the various scenarios that would work to get into the tournament. Who else got flashbacks during the Wisconsin banked 3?? Dug McDaniel hasn't quite turned the corner yet (he has the worst shooting at the rim of anyone in college basketball) but he also had consecutive Kenpom MVP performances. Able to keep winning without Jett, thankfully. Still just feels like they're a player short of being a top 20 Kenpom team.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Men's Basketball vs Rutgers starts at 22:08 Brian did not watch this game live because he did not have power (and two children). Shout out to the Ann Arbor District Library. It's a lot more pleasant watching basketball when you know it's going to be ok! Rutgers goes 5 of 16 from the free throw line, 9 of 22 at the rim. The key to beating Rutgers is forcing them to take long twos. Michigan is tied for second in the Big Ten. Looking ahead at Illinois, the Illini have been kinda meh recently. Winning that game would still be a much needed Quad 1 win.  3. Hot Takes and Hockey vs Notre Dame starts at 36:22 Takes hotter than Crisler Arena after they show a clear foul on Tyler Wahl that's, the ball's out of bounds and you're just like "it's gonna be Charles Matthews again" and everybody's really mad and then they bank in a 3 and it's just [inarticulate yelling]. Not enough pressure is put on the zamboni drivers. Michigan only gets 2 points out of Notre Dame in this series. Notre Dame's goalie stole the whole weekend, shots in the 3rd period of the Saturday game were 27-6 in favor of Michigan! Penalties called have not been consistent with keeping players safe, it's more about avoiding bad press. Who's excited about Allentown, Pennsylvania?  4. Football Spring Bits starts at 58:43 The least interesting Spring Practice of our lives? Not much chatter since most of the team is decided (selecting the starting five on the offensive line needs to be decided?). Pretty much everything else is set besides cornerback. Amorian Walker is a cornerback now! There's been some hype, how much can we believe it? The rest of the chatter has been along the lines of "yeah! Donovan Edwards is good at football!" Otherwise, just trying to figure out which new guys are going to be good.  MUSIC: "Edge of the Edge"—Panda Bear and Sonic Boom "Easy On Your Own"—Alvvays "Water in Hell"—The Broken Social Scene “Across 110th Street”

Things discussed: Miggy Theater 3000 Terrence Shannon would be a perfect fit—Charles Matthews with better outside shooting and not as good at bad shots. 97%ile on spot-ups, is a 6'6" wing defender who played for TTU. If Diabate goes to the NBA, you bump up Houstan to the four and Shannon is a three. Admissions? That seems to be the real question. He might lose a lot of credits. Is there a scholarship? No way you get another 8 months without losing at least someone on the team right now. If they do, can one of Juwan's sons (Jace, probably, because of NCAA rules for blue shirts) redshirt? Football scholarship situation? They're at 87 by my count, and they know they'll lose a couple more before the season. Jay Wright: Didn't make it about himself. Can you name another coach who knocked us out of the tournament twice and each time we were like "Yeah, he deserves it." Is the NIL/transfer system good? Complaints from those who benefited from the rot of the old system (Saban, Dabo) you can ignore right out. As for the rest, the NCAA needs to look at how to regulate this with incentives to stay at your school, and incentives for the schools to develop their own. Who are the NCAA serving? The guys who want labor to be cheap. If Michigan loses both Dante Moore and CJ Carr, there's a major problem with recruiting.

Football things discussed: Kirk Herbstreit should have had to play QB for Ohio State Warde's presser: recruiting clearly is not their top priority. If Harbaugh wanted to come back for what Michigan wanted to offer it'd be done now. Behind the scenes: Harbaugh probably testing NFL, Michigan likely checking out the alternatives. The entire sky isn't falling: they'll still have most of a class signed on Wednesday. Nobody's going to take a coordinator job on a sinking ship unless he wants the top job after. Whatever you do you have to get a recruiting titan. If Michigan's going to pay they're not going to get Isaiah Wilson. Is there a Juwan Howard of college football? Franklin hires guys because they have hot wives. If you're a recruit and you have an opportunity to sign on to a transition class, you are going to get more of an opportunity to start. Buyout doesn't seem plausible, so bottom line is if Harbaugh has an NFL exit he might take it and if he doesn't they sign an extension that Michigan can get out of if there's a bad year. Hoops things discussed: Big Hunter Dickinson! His +/- keeps going up. Just slicing through Toledo. Who in the B10 verse can stop him? Perimeter communication needs work on defense. Chaundee Brown shootin like that: Charles Matthews with a shot? Prefer him to a 5-star. Around the Big Ten: MSU looks tough, Illinois's shooting is unsustainable but Adam Miller can play.

We also break down what we think of Michigan adding Eastern, of Eastern's tenure at Purdue, what went wrong and what kind of impact we think he will have in Ann Arbor. Answering questions from listeners, we tackle comparing Eastern to former Kentucky transfer and Michigan captain Charles Matthews — and caution why that comparison may be unfair — while assessing the fit Eastern provides. For the second week in a row, our podcast is centered entirely on basketball. We open by reflecting on Michigan’s weekend in Des Moines, looking at Des Moines as a host city, how the Wolverines fared in blowout wins over Montana and Florida and what some our lasting impressions of the weekend were. Included are looks into Charles Matthews, Jon Teske, Zavier Simpson and Isaiah Livers’ progress. Then, we turn the page to Michigan’s Sweet Sixteen trip to Anaheim, where the Wolverines will face the nation’s No. 1 defense in Texas Tech. We dissect how the Red Raiders’ defense is so good, what Michigan can do to get around it, other things Texas Tech brings to the table and what the biggest thing the Wolverines can do to help their chances is. We also discuss what Michigan needs to accomplish as a team to get out of Anaheim unscathed and make it to the Final Four, while taking a look at the state of the Wolverines after the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. This week’s podcast, live from Des Moines instead of in studio, is full of Michigan basketball talk. With Steve Lorenz unable to make it on the show, Zach Shaw runs things solo, opening with his thoughts on the Michigan basketball team’s runner-up finish in the Big Ten Tournament, its loss to Michigan State and how concerning it is to lose to the Spartans three times in four weeks. Then, Shaw opines on Michigan’s NCAA Tournament draw, beginning with the Wolverines’ first-round rematch with Montana. Shaw discusses how the Grizzlies are different than they were last season, and what each difference means for Michigan’s ability to avoid an upset loss.Following that discussion, he breaks down the potential rest of the field, which lacks big-name programs but does have a number of solid, experienced and defensive-oriented teams that it could face in every round. He makes his pick for which opponent would be the toughest matchup for Michigan, while also running through scenarios and how the bracket looks similar to last season. Then, Shaw turns things over to the Michigan locker room, where he was able to record interviews with Luke Yaklich, Jordan Poole, Charles Matthews and Zavier Simpson. The four discuss Michigan trying to bounce back from a championship loss, regaining confidence after another defeat and their thoughts on the matchup in addition to much more. Included our thoughts on the officiating, on Xavier Tillman, on how much Charles Matthews was missed, on how concerning Michigan’s second half was and more. This week’s episode actually discusses all three categories surrounding Michigan. We begin by discussing the Michigan basketball team’s 1-1 week, looking into what doomed the Wolverines in their loss to Michigan State, how significant it was, the latest with Jordan Poole and Charles Matthews and how much of the loss was the Wolverines playing poorly versus the Spartans playing well. Then, we break down Michigan’s dominant home finale win over Nebraska, looking into the Wolverines’ push to play through the post, their defensive adjustments and how much can be read into a blowout of the reeling Cornhuskers. We also dissect the latest in Colin Castleton and David DeJulius, and what kind of role they can play for Michigan down the stretch. Following that discussion, we next look at Michigan football two weeks out of spring practices starting. We first review our rankings earlier in the week of where each position group stands, dissecting why Michigan’s passing offense may be solid, why the defense has some questions to answer — especially up front — and what to make of Michigan’s inexperienced running backs corps. We also break down which Wolverines may be due for a big season, and which skill position player we think will get the most touches. Finally, we close by looking at the Michigan perspective of the latest 2020 football recruiting rankings, including which rising targets the Wolverines are in on, other recruits to keep an eye on and more. What’s happened to the African-American community in San Francisco is a much more complex tale than just being pushed out by young and transient up-and-comers. Instead, it involves a deeply-rooted history spread across generations with a comet-sized impact that is still being felt today. Nacre was composed for the experimental music festival 'Skanu mezs' in Riga, Latvia. The premiere of Nacre was held there on 23rd May 2009 in St. Saviour's Anglican Church. [With thanks to Viestarts Gailitis.] For a church organ and light organ Composed by Hildur Gunadttir Performed by Charles Matthews and Hildur Gunadttir Installation by Eln Hansdttir and Hildur Gunadttir Light organ programmed by Derek Holzer Nacre is dedicated to Hildur's grandmother Margrt Gunadttir, who celebrated her 80th birthday in July 2009. The title refers to her name, since both the noun 'Nacre' and the name 'Margrt' mean 'Mother of Pearl'. Nacre is a written for 2 types of organs; a church organ and a light organ, therefore the score is twofold. 1. Church Organ/DNA: Nacre's score is in the shape of a 360 degree helix of a double strand DNA. This form was chosen as a connection to Margrt's passionate work as a virologist. DNA forms the basis of inheritance in all organisms, except viruses, although DNA can be found in a few viruses such as herpes. DNA also connects grandmother and granddaughter, whereas it holds genetic information to be passed on from one generation to the next. 2. Light Organ/Newton: The basis of the light organ is Newton's color circle. He was the first person to connect colour to wavelengths of light and made the colour circle based on that theory. His circle consists of 7 colours and he assigned musical notes to each colour. Newton's scale starts with red, to which he assigned the note D. The scale continues as a diatonic scale from D (also known as the Dorian mode); E=orange, F=yellow etc. A light system was made specially for Nacre, which reads the frequencies being played on the church organ and triggers coloured lights for each note in Newton's color circle. When the note D is played on the organ, for example, a red light shines in the light organ. The light organ hangs above the audience. 70 LED lights are arranged in mirror-origami modules that are held up by giant balloons. The floating lights are therefore multiplied and create a slight spatial distortion. Score/Performance: The 21 angstrm width of the DNA is divided into 3 sets of Newton's 7 colour circle. Each set of colours are played on different manuals of the organ; one set is played on the pedals, another set is played on the 1st manual and the third set is played on the 2nd manual. The 34 angstrm length of the DNA serves as a timeline for Nacre. The form of the DNA determines when each note should be played. When the DNA rises or falls to a note in Nacre's score, it should be played until the DNA rises or falls on the same note, then the note is released. All the notes are indicated in the score with corresponding colours lighting up in the color organ. The result of this is a giant chord, where the overtones engage in a war as to which note shines the brightest in the light organ. Newton's colour circle is also spread horizontally over the length of the DNA, starting at red with low frequencies and working its way up the frequency scale up to purple. The "musical colours" of the chord are controlled by the 2nd performer next to the organist, who pulls or pushes the church organ stops in and out, creating an overtone resonance beat according to the horizontal colour circle. Starting with the lower stops and slower beat, working its way up to the higher stops and faster beat.

Known in electronic music circles for his releases on Seed Records, Charles Matthews, aka Ardisson has spent much of the last few years immersing himself in music from the Indonesian islands of Bali and Java. This, the seventh installment of Spannered's Oddcast series, is a selection of music from Bali.   'This is a mix of various styles of Balinese music you can find on CD outside of Bali. Some of my friends complain that gamelan sounds a bit samey so I wanted to make sure there was a nice variety of timbres. There's a bit of genggong, gambuh, beleganjur, kecak... gamelan gambang, angklung and gong gede... it doesn't even scrape the surface though. I had fun mixing it so a couple of bits have come out a tad weird. I can't find the tracklisting right now but if you like this then a good place to start is Music From the Morning of the World on Nonesuch Recordings.' Ardisson, London 2009
