The Genesis Collective's Community Theatre Project Our Stories: A Play for Beaver County Voices On episode 22 of the TSVP Radio Theater Podcast, we present a special preview performance of The Genesis Collective's inaugural community theatre project: Our Stories: A Play for Beaver County Voices. Performed in the radio theatre-style before a live audience at the sold-out Beaver Train Station in Beaver, Pennsylvania, this show represents the dramatic arts feature of The Genesis Collective's 2022 Art Madness Celebration in Beaver County. Visit The Genesis Collective Episode Cover: Artwork by Jacob Swanson. Previous Next Photos: Erin Ninehouser/Rustbelt Mayberry Photography About this Play The performance featured here is a special preview of Our Story's future stage presentation to be held August 20, 2022 at the Black Box Theater in the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center, Midland, Pennsylvania.  This is the inaugural production of The Genesis Collective's Community Theatre Project--an innovative initiative designed to support the dramatic arts in Beaver County by creatively revealing and showcasing the voices and stories of our time and in our communities.  Our Story: A Play for Beaver County Voices does just that.  The subjects, incidents, characters, and dialogue are all based on actual interviews and recorded conversations with Beaver Countians--our friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens.  We make no apologies for the sometimes uncomfortable truths borne out by these lived experiences. We stand by our sources and lift up their voices and stories from the marginalized shadows, where far too many of us would rather they stay "out of sight, out of mind," as our play's Maggie Kowalski says.  These stories are bad for business, bad for attracting new investment.  What town wants to damage their reputation by talking about . . . food insecurity, homelessness, human trafficking, or the psychological traumas brought on by the Pandemic?  These Beaver County stories make us wince, naturally.  But we can't ignore them.  Only then can we meaningfully address the issues facing us today and with hope and possibility transform our communities--our entire county--into a better place to be.  Ars vitam meliorem facit -- art makes life better. Cast & Crew Robert Hugh Harper Hugh plays the part of Walter Montegomery. Hugh is a Beaver County native and professional voice actor specializing in audiobooks. He played in a number of movies including a Cannes Palme d'Or winner, NYC short film festival award winner “Stock Footage,” and numerous co-costing spots for Seto Nakai Media and NHK in Japan. He is married to Kristi, and father of Abby Harper – they love in Beaver, PA Keith Zagorski Keith plays the part of Tom Robinson.  Keith is a 25 year veteran actor with multiple Western Pennsylvania theatre companies.  He is a founding member of The Bobcat Players (Beaver, Pa).  His favorite roles include The Drawer Boy (Angus), Old Love (Bud Mitchell), and Harvey (Elwood P. Dowd) with the Bobcat Players; A Fine Bright Day Today (Milton Farnsworth) and The Grand Manner (Guthrie McClintic) with the Little Lake Theatre. Jenn Rian Jenn plays the part of Charlotte Wilson.

“I don't think I've ever encountered this in my life before, writing something like this. It was so direct. Even though I didn't know him personally, I was living in the same situation, and I could feel how he must have felt, the whole business of him being brave, and trying to tell the truth which was a hard thing to do at that time and in that place. And then, being sick and dying, which I could only imagine. He called it the dust: finally, the dust has come down to the ground. I am diagnosed, he said.”It's February 2020. The beginning of the coronavirus pandemic worldwide.China has been in lockdown since January. The doctor who blew the whistle on the pandemic, Dr Li Wenliang, has been denounced by the authorities and forced to sign a retraction: rumours are swirling about what this virus actually is and what on earth is going on; everyone is frightened, and everyone is glued to the doctor's blog which bravely chronicles his descent into illness. He is dying. And it is on the day of his death, February 6, that Gao Ping gets a message from one of his friends that says, “Well, as a composer, as a musician, don't you have anything to say about our current time?”Dr Li Wenliang died that night. The next morning China woke up to huge Chinese characters carved into the snow on a riverbank: Farewell Dr Li Wenliang. Gao Ping was immediately inspired to write Bitter Cold Night, finishing it very quickly, an experience he says was unlike any in his life before. In this programme, he speaks about what lockdown was like in the interior of China close to the epicentre, as one of the first to go into lockdown in the world. He speaks of the tragedy and martyring of Dr Li Wenliang, later named a National Martyr by the government; he speaks about what it is like to be a musician working under the auspices of China's Communist regime; and he speaks about his piece, Bitter Cold Night, and the struggle of searching for words.Host: Charlotte WillsonGuest: Gao PingBrought to you by SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music--Moments in timeA composer's response to critical moments in time: The moments when time pivots and history changes course. “Solidarity is a hugely important thing, in life, particularly in this period of ghastly late capitalism. If you don't have solidarity within the cornerstones of justice and what's right for people and workers, you don't have very much to base a society on. So I think that's the root of what I enjoy about protests. It's the people, where everyone is feeling as one, and marching with a purpose. There's something very powerful about that to me as a creative individual.”New Zealand's biggest city has seen its fair share of protests and noise. And who better to capture the voice of that city than a composer who has never been shy of politics, who has a deep fascination with soundscapes and colours, textures, and the possibilities of the human voice. She is Eve de Castro-Robinson, and in 'Cries of Auckland', she begins with the cries that punctuated her childhood — the cries of the 'Star' newspaper boys on Queen Street — as a springboard for the cries that she herself has chanted in protest marches through the streets of Auckland through the decades. In this programme, Eve talks about her relationship with Auckland, protests, sonic art, graphic design, her composing philosophy, and her development of a creative persona and voice that is always arresting — beautiful, colourful, thought-provoking, and above all, rooted in the real world.Host: Charlotte WilsonGuests: Eve de Castro-RobinsonLinks & ResourcesMore details on the composer and the associated work here.Link to the film of Cries of Auckland This episode was brought to you by SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music.Special thanks to RNZ Concert for providing the audio of Cries of Auckland performed by the Karlheinz CompanyProduction teamExecutive Producer: Diana MarshProducer: Charlotte WilsonSound Engineer: Phil Brownlee--Moments in TimeA composer's response to critical moments in time: The moments when time pivots and history changes course. “I have no concept of what it is like to be involved in war. I can only experience it through their related experience. We have letters from them, very very dry day-to-day nuts and bolts, an insight into how boring it is for them in the trenches waiting and waiting and waiting for days. And then all of a sudden – WHAM !! Everything happens and people start dying. It's unimaginable.”In 1917, three New Zealand boys — brothers — were sent to the western front to fight in World War I. They never came home. They died in the Chemin des Dames, a place of legend, now a place of unimaginable horror carved into trenches, where infantry from both sides sheltered in caves. Their names were Charles, Vince, and Frank, and they were the great-great-uncles of Gareth Farr, composer, and percussionist. When former Adam International Cello Competition winner Sébastien Hurtaud approached Gareth with a proposal he couldn't resist (“I'll be your Rostropovich, and you can be my Shostakovich”), Gareth said, “You're on!”. The result is Cello Concerto ‘Chemin des Dames', a work that is as much about the men who died fighting WWI as it is about the women who suffered unbearably while looking after the home front.Host: Charlotte WilsonGuest: Gareth FarrLinks & ResourcesMore details on the composer and the associated work are here.Link to the film of Chemin de Dames This episode was brought to you by SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music.Production teamExecutive Producer: Diana MarshProducer: Charlotte WilsonSound Engineer: Phil BrownleeSpecial thanks to Rubicon for providing the audio of Chemin des Dames performed by Sébastien Hurtaud and the NZSO.This podcast is supported by funding from The Stout Trust.--Moments in timeA composer's response to critical moments in time: The moments when time pivots and history changes course. After successfully navigating the highways and byways of continental Europe, a tanned but not so fit Sean Whipp re-joins the Down the Track team for Episode 22. Joining Sean and Tim in the DTT hot seat is Hamish Beaumont – a man who needs no introduction. The episode kicks off with Sean enlightening us on his European tour as an athlete manager, culminating in Catriona Bisset’s record breaking 800m performance at the London Diamond League. Sean also reflects on the World University Games in Naples before moving on to an in depth analysis of the Australian performances in London. XCR’19 moved to balmy Ballarat in the depths of winter, where unseasonal conditions provided a great opportunity for runners to post fast 15km & 6km times around the Lake Wendouree circuit. DTT caught up with race winners Kiah Fry and Andrew Buchanan to discuss their runs. And as we move to the latter stages of XCR’19, Hamish delivers an honest assessment of the various Premiership and relegation battles across the divisions. Athletics Victoria CEO Glenn Turnor also provides some comment and thoughts on the XCR series by way of an interview recorded immediately after the Lake Wendouree race. Lisa Weightman lit up the Australian running scene in Sydney last weekend by running a World Record for an 40 year old over the classic 10km road race distance. Lisa’s time of 31:55 was a PB for the three time Olympian who is looking toward Tokyo to join a very elite group of four time Olympians in athletics. We hear from Lisa about her run and the next phase of her preparation. Joining Lisa as a World Record breaker, Steve Moneghetti ran a big race on his home circuit to take the World 55 to 59 record for the 15km. Mona joins DTT for a quick chat about the Lake Wendouree event. In another feature interview we catch up with Sam Rizzo, the Ballarat based wheelie who under the guidance of Richard Colman has his sights set firmly on the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. We round out the feature interviews by catching up with Nick Earl at the Tasmanian Cross Country Championships at Pontville. Nick agonizes over being beaten by someone half his age and having heckling directed at him from across Bass Strait by Hamish Beaumont. In the Hot Topics Sean, Tim and Hamish tackle the issues around Shayna Jack and the current crisis Swimming Australia now face, while the Caster Semenya case continues to attract headlines, this time due to the fact she will not be competing in the upcoming World Championships. So that’s Episode 22 – the best 3hrs of listening you’ll get this week! 0:00:00 to 0:01:19 – Intro and welcome to co-hosts Sean Whipp and Hamish Beaumont 0:01:20 to 0:35:37 – The European wrap and insights from Sean on his European tour 0:35:38 to 0:53:34 – Review of XCR’19 round 7 at Lake Wendouree in Ballarat. Cody is joined by producer and comic Meredith Kachel and comic Melody Kamali to finally figure out what the whole deal with women is! Amirite fellas?! You can find the book on Amazon and at your friend from middle school’s—you should probably admit to yourself that the two of you have grown apart as you’ve matured and maybe it’s for the best if you made new friends.    The Alpha Female's Guide to Men and Marriage: How Love Works by Suzanne Venker   America is in love with the alpha female. She’s the quintessential modern woman—assertive, razor sharp, and fully in control. Her success in the marketplace is undeniable, a downright boon to society. But what happens when the alpha female gets married?   She becomes an alpha wife, of course.   An alpha wife is in charge of everything and everyone. She is, quite simply, the Boss. The problem is, no man wants a boss for a wife. That type of relationship may work for a spell, but it will eventually come crashing down. Since 1970, just as women became more and more powerful outside the home—more alpha—the divorce rate has quadrupled. And it is women who lead the charge. Today, 70% of divorce is initiated by wives.   Do men just make lousy husbands? Not at that rate, says Suzanne Venker, bestselling author of The War on Men. The truth is that women don’t know how to be wives. Why would they? That’s not what they were raised to become.   But women can learn. There’s an art to loving a man, says Venker, and any woman can master it. An alpha female herself, Venker learned how to be a wife the hard way—through trial and error. Lots of error. And here’s what she knows today—the set of skills a woman needs to pursue a career, or even to raise children, is the exact set of skills that will mess up her marriage for good. No man likes to be told what to do. And no woman respects the man who does.   The Alpha Female's Guide to Men and Marriage gives women who are used to being in charge the tools they need to make their marriages less competitive and more complementary. Part memoir, part advice, this brave manifesto argues that while marriage is more challenging for the alpha female, it is possible to find peace in your marriage. In fact, it may be easier than you think.   Show Notes:   Previous Episodes:  40. 'A Christian Guide to the Sexual Marketplace' w/ Chris Sowa & Meredith Kachel 60.
