The New River Farms Sawmill opened July 19, 2024, offering customers many species of logs as boards and beams up to 25 feet in length to the customer's specifications. The company can also mill individual logs onsite. More than 100 people attended the Fayette County sawmill's Open House at Clifftop (near Babcock State Park) in mid-September. This year's ornament features a detailed depiction of the iconic West Virginia State Capitol, as seen from the south side overlooking the Kanawha River. The design also includes the likeness of Gov. Jim Justice's dog Babydog and the state flag. The limited number of 1,000 ornaments are priced at $20 each and are only available at the Tamarack Marketplace at The Culture Center in Charleston. The asking price is $1.795 million. The former Salt Sulphur Springs resort, known as “Old Salt” by its 19th century clientele, is tucked into a shady, narrow Monroe County valley through which spring-fed Indian Creek meanders, a few miles south of Union. Since the early 1800s, the house has provided lodging for guests drawn to Salt Sulphur's healing springs. A chapel, five cottages, a bathhouse, a spring house and a store building were also built of native stone and completed at around the same time. During “Old Salt's” pre-Civil War heyday, nearly 2,000 guests stayed at the Monroe County resort each summer--many of whom were southerners seeking to escape the season's heat. The pair had only been married six months when they embarked on a camping trip in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney. A trip that sadly only Des would survive. Initially he would tell police that Janet had fallen from a 50-metre cliff, but investigators would soon come to realise that the 49-year-old hadn't fallen at all… she'd been pushed. Adam Hurt is an acclaimed clawhammer banjo player and one of my favourite performers in any style and I was absolutely delighted that he agreed not only to speak to me at length about his life and teaching of traditional music, but also perform for this episode some of my favourite music. His albums of gourd banjo music “Earth Tones” and “Back to the Earth” are beloved by a wide range of listeners, I think partly because the sound colour of the instrument is much more mellow than other banjos. You'll hear him play and talk about the fascinating history of both his gourd banjo and one of his favourite antique instruments. He's also a fine old-time fiddler, and although he grew up with classical musician parents, his father a violinist with the Minnesota orchestra, Adam's life-changing musical moment was with a wonderful and dedicated school teacher. The incredibly charming American musician Janie Rothfield is a great traditional fiddler, banjo player, educator, composer, and so much fun to talk to! This episode features quite a bit of music on both fiddle and banjo. The conversation delved into the best ways to teach music, learn tunes, play with ease, accompany dancers and most importantly find connection with others through music! We talked about her childhood, learning violin in one of the first Suzuki classes in the United States with Louise Behrend, figure skating, learning the banjo, moving to Scotland, playing at music festivals, and why she started her unique “Janie's Jumpstart Weekend Camps”. Janie records and tours with many bands and teaches both fiddle and clawhammer banjo. Trevor lives in Pocahontas Co. West Virginia where he continues to pass on the “old-time music” and traditions of the famous Hammons Family. He is the great-grandson of musician, Lee Hammons. Trevor is an award-winning banjo and fiddle player. He started lessons when he was eight years old with Pam Lund of Woodrow. She played with the Hammons and learned from them in the '70s. Trevor has played with bands previously but finds the stories and history of this music need to be presented in a different way, which shows the importance of the tradition and what it really means. He has a show that explains this and wonderful music to accompany and showcase his legacy. He mastered the banjo, playing in the Appalachian Old-Time technique familiar to his great-Grandfather Lee and his friends during the 1800s and early 1900s. As a youth, Trevor took many awards for adult categories with his unique style and musical abilities, playing an eerie and haunting style as performed by his Great-grandfather Lee. He has placed in Vandalia, Clifftop, Galax, VA, Monterey, VA, and more! If you love the banjo and old-time music you must catch him playing! Only a few years ago, Trevor picked up the fiddle and began playing, again placing in contests in WV and surrounding states. He continues to learn from great musicians such as Pam Lund, Dave Bing, Henry Barnes, and John Blissard on the fiddle. He has studied with Tim Bing, Ron Mullennex, Dwight Diller, and so many more wonderful musicians. Trevor teaches music lessons at the Pocahontas Co. Library and Marlinton Wellness Center. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/story-sessions/support

He has called dances, performed, and taught at music festivals and dance events throughout the U.S. and overseas since the early 1970s, including over forty years as a member of the Green Grass Cloggers. His flatfoot dancing was featured in the film, Songcatcher, for which he also served as Traditional Dance consultant. From 1982 through 2004, he toured and played guitar with Ralph Blizard and the New Southern Ramblers. He also plays old-time fiddle and banjo.Over the last thirty years, Phil has done extensive research in the area of Appalachian dance, and his book Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics: Roots and Branches of Southern Appalachian Dance (University of Illinois Press, 2015) tells the story behind the square dances, step dances, reels, and other forms of dance practiced in southern Appalachia. A 2017 inductee to the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame, Phil teaches traditional music and dance at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina, where for twenty-five years he served as coordinator of the Old-Time Music and Dance Week at the Swannanoa Gathering.Click here to download a transcript of this episode.Music and soundbites featured in this episode (in order of appearance):“Blizard Train” – “Blizard Train,” Ralph Blizard & the New Southern Ramblers (June Appal Records, 1989) Ralph Blizard (fiddle), Phil Jamison (guitar), Gordy Hinners (banjo), Andy Deaver (bass).Phil Jamison, Thomas Maupin, and friends flatfooting at the Clifftop festival in 2010Phil calling the Grapevine Twist square dance and a big set dance at the 2011 Dare to be Square in Brasstown, NCHistoric recordings from Phil (view the entire collection referenced in his book here):Mellie Dunham, "Chorus Jig" contra dance (1926)Samantha Bumgarner, calling a Southern (big ring) square dance to "Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss" (1924)Ernest Legg calling "Chase the Rabbit" square dance with the Kessinger Brothers playing "Devil's Dream" (1928)“Zai Na Yaoyuan De Difang” (In That Faraway Place) – “March Celebration: Chinese-Appalachian Collaborations,” Jenny & the Hog Drovers and Manhu (recorded in Shanghai, China, 2017) Maddy Mullany & Clarke Williams (fiddles), Phil Jamison (banjo), Hayden Holbert (guitar), Landon George (bass), Jin Hongmei (vocal)Watch a video of the group performing in ChinaOther LinksPhil's website, where you can also order his book, Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics: Roots and Branches of Southern Appalachian DanceSquare 'em up! Born and bred Tasmanian Mary Jackson, along with her partner Dave, opened the doors to their breathtaking Dodge's Ferry holiday shack, aptly named Clifftop on Park, back in 2016 and since doing so, haven't looked back. In the five or so years they've been operating, they've managed to amass 510 Airbnb reviews, only 4 of which have been less than 5 stars. No mean feat as I am sure even the most seasoned of accommodation hosts will agree. Mary puts this largely down to her ethos of creating a unique space that really reflects the history and passions of the owners, as well as the fine art of under-promising and over-delivering; a simple motto that in today's fast-paced world, seems to have been somewhat forgotten.

Between the beaches of Bondi and Tamarama in Sydney's picturesque Eastern suburbs, lies a steep cliff face. Parks and a walking track sit above, attracting tourists from all over the world. But below is rock and the white, foamy Pacific Ocean, the water appearing black at night time. In the 1980s, there was no railing separating the track from the steep cliff. And at night, sometimes screams were heard by locals. Bloodstains were found along the walkway. And in the very worst-case scenarios, men disappeared… or their lifeless bodies were found below - lives cut tragically short. Some locals nicknamed the area Bondi Badlands - a spot that turned into what's been referred to as a killer's playground. So what was happening to these innocent men? And why did it take such a long time for police to give these crimes the time and energy they always deserved? CREDITS Guest: Greg Callaghan, host of the Bondi Badlands podcast. Festival-goers can join in a barn dance, freedom sing or banjo workshop, and take in traditions from Mexico, Puerto Rico and across the U.S. The day culminates in a concert by Las BomPleneras (an all-female bomba y plena band), Mariachi Sirenas (Chicago’s only all-female mariachi band) and old-time and country blues master Hubby Jenkins (formerly of Carolina Chocolate Drops). I’ve been to this festival, and I had a blast. You should go if you can. It’s all day September 14th. Tickets are only $20 at the door or $15 if you buy yours in advance at https://singandstomp.com/, which I have linked in the show notes.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friends are Jane Rothfield and Nathan Bontrager, AKA Hen’s Teeth! We played some old time music that I’m excited for you to hear. We recorded this interview a few months ago at Clifftop, and I’ve been saving it for a special occasion, which this certainly is, because it’s the last week of Get Up in the Cool month! Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I have a lot of friends this week! Agnes Brogeby, Erling Bronsberg, Lydia Malmqvist, and Kristian Herner, from the bands The Rockridge Brothers, Six String Yada, and Friendly Neighborhood Stringband. And they’re all from Sweden! This session was thrown together pretty last minute, late in the week during Clifftop, but it was exactly what I needed after a week of pretty cerebral interviews and tunes. We basically played a bunch of Old Time song chestnuts, and we had a blast. Tunes we’ll play: Train on the Island Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key Katie Dear Walk Along John to Kansas Gospel Plow Bonus Track: The Strike Song from Pajala Six String Yada at the South Side Cavern in Stockholm: https://www.facebook.com/events/132744920703813/?acontext=%7B%22actionhistory%22%3A%22[%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22messaging%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22attachment%5C%22%2C%5C%22extradata%5C%22%3A%7B%7D%7D]%22%7D The Rockridge Brothers (Kristian Herner) http://rockridgebrothers.com/ https://www.facebook.com/rockridgebrothers/ Buy their albums: https://itunes.apple.com/se/artist/rockridge-brothers/id283781304 Six String Yada (Erling and Agnes) http://www.sixstringyada.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sixstringyada/ Buy their albums: http://www.sixstringyada.com/album/ Friendly Neighbourhood Stringband https://www.facebook.com/FriendlyNeighbourhoodStringband/ Bonefaas Banjos: http://www.johannesbonefaas.com/
Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is Sonya Badigian. I’m not sure exactly when I met Sonya; probably at Clifftop a few years ago, but I really got to know her when she invited me to her birthday party last fall back when she lived in Charlottesville, and I decided to go, on a whim, even though I barely knew her. Old Time music is cool like that. Tunes we’ll play: Blackfoot John Cole Judge Parker, Take These Shackles Off of Me Sally Goodin Who’s Gonna Talk to Dinah Midnight Bonus Track: Prettiest Little Gal in the County Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool Buy GUitC Vol. 1 https://camerondewhitt.bandcamp.com/ Order and download Field Recorders’ Collective albums: http://fieldrecorder.org/
Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This is a very special episode of Get Up in the Cool, because my guest is Seth Swingle. We recorded this interview at Clifftop last year, very late in the festival. Seth was actually my eighth recording that week, so when he said he wanted to showcase solo banjo music in weird tunings, I said, so you mean I don’t have to learn any tunes? I can just sit and listen to you??? I was very excited. Tunes we’ll play Shortenin’ Bread Lost Gander Buck Creek Gals Grigsby’s Hornpipe Whoop ‘Em Up Cindy Rye Whiskey Bonus Track: Rebels’ Raid Buy Seth's new album: http://www.sethswingle.com/store/ RSVP to Seth's Old Time Banjo Workshop and Concert (Facebook event)
Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is Scotty Leach! Scotty was one of the first names on my list when I started asking people to be on my show, because he was basically the first friend I made at my first Clifftop. That was almost 4 years ago, and I think playing with Scotty that week was yet another point of no return for me and my relationship with Old Time music. Scotty’s fiddling… the best way I can think to describe it is “flippantly brilliant.” Case in point: he won first prize in the Morehead fiddling contest last year playing a tune he learned in a jam right before he went on stage. But more than just his fiddling, I really like him. I would go visit Scotty even if he wasn’t an old time musician, which is like the main reason I visit people any more. It was really neat to hear Scotty’s story. Somehow, a lot of the details were new to me, so once again, I’m glad for the pretense of this show to get to know my friends better. Tunes we play: Julianne Johnson Mose Coffman’s Lost Indian Katydid Don Messer’s Breakdown L&N Rag Altamont Bonus Track: Bill Brown Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool
Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is Aaron Olwell! We recorded in Charlottesville, Virginia on my recent trip South. Aaron is a fantastic fiddler and clarinetist, and I’m sure he plays lots of other things too. In fact, I think we met in a jam at my first Clifftop, and he was flatfooting while playing a double slide whistle. That was years ago, and it was the middle of the night, but I’m pretty sure that was Aaron. Anyway, there’s no antics in today’s interview, just some neat tunes of Aaron’s choosing, some hot fiddling, some ambitious banjo playing, a very unique cumberland gap, and a little chat about what makes Aaron tick. Tunes we’ll play: Bumblebee in a Jug Lost Girl Knoxville Rag Cumberland Gap Magnolia One-Step Bonus Track: Grey Eagle Like The Big Dixie Swingers Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/bigdixieswingers Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool
Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is one of the first people I met at my first ever Clifftop, melodic clawhammer banjoist Bertram Levy. We recorded this late in the week at the Keith McManus tent, so there’s a lot of background noise, but I think it makes a nice, bustling ambiance for our competing bum-diddies. And trigger warning: this episode is all banjo duets. Check out Bertram's website: http://bertramlevy.com/ Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool

Up and coming fiddler and singer/songwriter Jen Starsinic’s musical journey has, thus far, been quite impressive. After landing a full-time bluegrass fiddling gig at the age of 14, busking on street corners, studying old time at its source in Clifftop, WV, attending the Berklee College of Music, and hitting the road with top touring Americana bands such as The David Mayfield Parade, Darol Anger and The Republic of Strings, and Nora Jane Struthers, Starsinic is ready to stand on her own two feet. Starsinic just released The Flood and The Fire, her debut record.

From the CD "On The Edge" by the Cliffhangers. Fiddle: Mark Simos; banjo: Brendan Doyle; guitar: Rusty Neithammer; tenor guitar: Jody Platt; bass: Karen Falkowski. Fiddle tuning: FCFC, banjo tuning: FBbFBbC Sources: Hiram Stamper, Hindman, Knott County, Kentucky; and his son Art Stamper. Mark's notes: "I first heard Art play this tune late one foggy night at Clifftop — standing in a muddy clearing amidst a gathered crowd, hat slouched on his head, cross-tuned fiddle sailing the glorious fat low notes out into the dark trees. Though our version here is closer to his dad Hiram’s, we dedicate this tune to Art’s memory."
For a region that has seen generations of young people move away to find work in far away auto plants and steel mills, and in uniform, the song Home Sweet Home has a deep meaning lost on most of us today. The song has been around since before the Civil War, and you will find it in the repertoire of most musicians whose roots are in Appalachia. It is most often played as an instrumental; the song is so familiar, the singing of it is unnecessary. This is from our Clifftop jam with West Virginia fiddler Ralph Roberts. Don Couchie is playing rhythm guitar, and I am following along with some three finger style old time banjo.

This tune comes originally from North Carolina fiddler Martin Marcus (1881-1974), who recorded it for the Library of Congress in the early 40s. The rather obtuse title makes sense once you know that a pig's foot is a blacksmithing tool. Another recording from one of our campsite jams on Geezer Hill. Don Couchie is doing the fiddling, I am three finger picking in open G tuning on my semi-fretless Tubaphone.

This is my contribution to the Old Time Tune of the Week for October 28, 2011. This is a recording I made at Clifftop with my pal Don Couchie. Don is on fiddle, leaning on those double stops just the way I like it; I am three-finger picking on my short scale, semi-fretless Paramount, in open A tuning.

This is another recording made with Don Couchie on Sunday morning at Clifftop 2011, after we had packed our gear to leave. This is from the repertoire of the legendary West Virginia fiddler Edden Hammons. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the title of the tune refers to a baby being born. That would explain the lyric "Fine times at our house, Katie’s got a little one, bless its little soul, it’s another little pretty one." That's just how I always felt about it, I remember those moments like it was yesterday. Key of A, sort of mixolydian; Don is playing fiddle, I am playing three finger style banjo on my short-scale, semi-fretless Paramount.

I had a nice jam session early on at Clifftop this year with my good friend Tim Rowell (clawhammertim here on the Hangout and on YouTube). Tim has established and now runs the Traditional Music Program at the Real School of Music in Burlington, Massachusetts. We see each other a lot at jams around the Boston area, but had to travel 800 miles to West Virginia to find some quiet time to do play some nice double banjo togrther, clawhammer and three-finger style. This is our take on Gary Harrison's fine twisty fiddle tune.

(Producer: Shea Shackelford + Jennifer Deer) We hope you enjoy our second piece from the Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop, West Virginia. This piece was a fun experiment for Jennifer and me. We basically wanted to take you on a walk through the campground, because it's a trip (like "that's trippy, man"). One of the amazing things about Clifftop is that once the music starts, it keeps going 24-7. And it's not just one or two bands, it's 5, 10, ... 30 small jams playing all over the place. There's a constant hum of music. You kind of tune in a band when you walk up on them. And when they stop playing or you walk away, you suddenly start to distinguish some new song from another group 20 feet away in the dark (well, it was pretty dark when we did this, anyway). This little tour starts at 2AM ... and that was still early at Clifftop.
(Producer: Jennifer Deer) HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHAPNICK!!! This piece is a birthday shout out to my brother ... here's a musical snapshot from Clifftop, home of this year's Appalachian String Band Festival. More music from Clifftop on Big Shed in the next few weeks ...
