According to the National Weather Service, there will be patchy frost before 8 a.m. in the Cedar Rapids area. Otherwise, it will be sunny, with a high near 67 degrees. On Thursday night it will be clear, with a low of around 40 degrees. University of Iowa Health Care leaders have notified employees that nurses in the coming weeks will face “some of the most challenging” staffing to date — warning that nurses in some units at times will have to take on five patients at once. He faces a maximum sentence of one year in federal prison, a $100,000 fine and one year of supervised release following any prison term. According to the plea agreement, the defense and prosecution agreed to recommend Smith receive probation, but the judge can decide whether to accept that recommendation. Smith, in the plea, admitted that on Sept. 25, 2017 he attempted to catch up with a motorcycle driven by Bryce Yakish, then 20, of Davenport, who was traveling at 84 mph westbound on Interstate 80. Yakish eventually exited and crossed the interstate southbound and Smith turned on the overhead lights and siren of his patrol vehicle. Yakish pulled into the entrance of the West Liberty Travel Plaza. Yakish stopped and was getting off his motorcycle as Smith got out of his vehicle and quickly approached him, he admitted in the plea. Yakish was standing next to his motorcycle and had his hands in the air when Smith hit Yakish in the chin area with an open hand palm strike. Yakish was wearing a helmet with a face mask but the force of the strike caused Yakish to fall backward over his motorcycle. In his plea said the strike was intentional. However, he also now admits in his plea that in his initial report and in subsequent testimony he claimed the strike was unintentional, and that he had only been trying to grab Yakish by the shoulder when he missed and hit him in the helmet. Smith was terminated from the Iowa State Patrol following an internal investigation of the arrest and allowed to retire in 2018, according to testimony. In this episode, Dan talks with Aaron Mears from Lulu's Perch Permaculture. They discuss what permaculture is, how and why Aaron got involved and even start to go into BioDynamics a little. Aaron is a Permaculture teacher and consultant on the Sunshine Coast who strives to build self-sufficient food growing gardens across the world. He is the manager of Lulu's Perch Permaculture Farm that he runs with his family, and has documented his gardening journey on his YouTube Channel. In 5 years, he has converted a 5-acre ornamental property into a thriving permaculture farm with market gardens, food forests, animal systems, compost engine rooms, bio char and microbe brewing. Aaron began his gardening journey as a nurse, then became a teacher and then found himself growing food in the Jordanian desert with renowned permaculturalist Geoff Lawton. He has recently begun sharing his knowledge and experience with people; teaching them how to design, build and maintain their own nutrient dense gardens on his Permaculture Design Course. Also, with an awesome team of teachers, Aaron and his friends are taking it to the next level by introducing permaculture to the public school system with the “Living Classroom Project” and teaching children as young as 5 how to grow their own food and be self-sufficient. The revolutionary program is now 18 years old and is growing from strength to strength and has attracted the attention of educators and businesses from around the world. Aaron believes that the only way to secure the future of the human race is to teach children how to reconnect with nature, grow their own organic food and get their hands back in the soil. But although the season is changing, local organizations remain in need of one of our state's most important resources: volunteers. Roger Williams Park's “Drive-Through Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular” seeks nightly volunteers for Oct. 1 to Nov. 1 to help the zoo run a ‘spooktacular' way to enjoy the Halloween season during COVID. Ticketed attendees will stay safe inside their cars while viewing thousands of intricately carved pumpkins. RI Free Clinic is in need of doctors and individuals who speak Spanish.
