Philip Polkinghorne's sister has described a catastrophic scene when she arrived at her brother's Remuera home on the day Pauline Hanna was found dead. Ruth Hughes was not called as a witness at Dr Polkinghorne's 2024 murder trial, where he was found not guilty, but today she was called on to give evidence at the inquest into Hanna's death. An inquest into the death of Pauline Hanna has begun in Auckland today - with a reminder that her husband, Philip Polkinghorne, is not on trial. Hanna was found dead in her Remuera home five years ago. A jury found retired eye surgeon Dr Polkinghorne not guilty of murdering Hanna after a high-profile criminal trial in 2024. The inquest will attempt to determine how Hanna died and the circumstances surrounding that. Reporter Jess Hopkins spoke to Melissa Chan-Green.

Maybe my head is in the sand, but all this excitement about fuel prices isn't making me any more inclined to buy an electric vehicle. Tell that to the people who are getting all excited and buying them. In big numbers too, it seems. So we've got the government warning that petrol prices could hit $4 a litre and EV dealers saying they're being run off their feet because of the ongoing situation in the middle east. BYD sold 80 on Saturday across the country. Normally they'd sell 25 on an average Saturday. So that's a major increase. Here in Christchurch, EV dealerships are reporting a major leap in sales too, with one of them selling out entirely in just two days. People are coming from as far away as nelson to get their hands on electric vehicles too, apparently. How things can change. In November, the EV dealers were ripping-in to the government for the changes it was making to the clean car standards for imported vehicles and we were all talking about the EV bubble busting. Fast-forward four months and throw in a bit of good old fashioned kiwi over-reaction, and the picture is very different. This war has only been going two-and-a-bit weeks but that's enough, it seems, for some people to want to go all EV on it. I drive petrol cars. And, at this point, i have no intention of switching to an EV. One of my vehicles, especially, is a real gas guzzler. But despite that, I have never had any interest in owning an EV. I can‘t tell you exactly why. It's not a protest of any sort. It's not climate change denial. It's none of that. I'm just not interested. And I am no more interested now, despite the war and the fuel prices. And i reckon that, once the oil tankers start sailing again through the strait of Hormuz, most people will still be happy with petrol and diesel vehicles. The other thing too is, that if i was buying an EV, I'd spend quite a bit of time looking into it. You wouldn't get me seeing a few days of petrol price increases and going all knee-jerk on it. But the ev people are loving it that some people are. DTR motors in Hornby had six cars on the lot on Friday night. By Sunday, they were all gone. Alex Wu is the sales manager. He says: “people just showed up, even from nelson, paid and drove off.” He says the weekend was the most “explosive” sales period in the nearly two years that DTR motors has been operating in Christchurch. And that's without any rebate assistance from the government. Which Finance Minister Nicola Willis said yesterday wouldn't be making a comeback. Saying: "i simply don't accept the idea that giving subsidies to millionaires in Remuera would help those afflicted by high petrol prices." Nevertheless, EV's are in demand again. Day three of Phillip Polkinghorne's murder trial has featured testimony around an orange rope and investigations after the death. Polkinghorne is accused of killing his wife, Pauline Hanna, in 2021 with debate in court today about a rope found on scene. Dog walkers in Auckland's Remuera and Pt Chevalier have been leaving poo bags where rubbish bins used to be. The council's been removing bins with low historical use since last November to save money. Police say a spate of petrol stations robberies across Auckland could be connected. There have been 5 such aggravated robberies in the city since Sunday; in Western Springs, Green Bay, Papatoetoe, Glen Eden and Remuera. Reporter Luka Forman speaks to Lisa Owen.

As if 3 gold medals wasn't enough this year for Matt, he also added the Bisset Shield with Remuera, the Te Puke Mid-Amateur and the Walton Masters to his wins – what a year! Matt also shares insights into the new up and coming players in the region and shares some of the things he's learnt from the young guns! Matt has represented Auckland Golf for over 20 years and is Blue and White through and through, not only as a player, Matt is also Senior Men's Captain and has just been unveiled as the new President of Auckland Golf, helping the wider Auckland Golf community as well as the teams, this is his way of giving back to the game. More than 300 build-to-rent homes are set to be built next to Ellerslie Racecourse after a KiwiSaver provider bought the land. Simplicity is now the owner of a 1.4-hectare block of land in Remuera. Managing director Sam Stubbs says it's the type of project KiwiSaver funds should be investing in. He spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

The owners of some of Auckland's most prestigious clifftop homes are frustrated and worried about the future. The storm that hit the city on 27 January broke all previous rainfall records and flooding and landslides caused widespread damage. Reporter Mohammad Alafeshat went to the suburb of Remuera to talk to residents.  

Whether it's fresh berries for dessert or baby potatoes for the Christmas roast, fruit and vegetables are a crucial category for the holiday shopping list. But with costs up after a year of tumultuous weather and supply chain struggles, the Christmas shop might be a little bit trickier than usual. Remuera-based green grocer Jack Lum shared his tips and tricks to finding the best fresh produce.

Auckland mayor Wayne Brown has announced councillor Desley Simpson as his deputy. Simpson is the councillor for the Ōrākei ward which covers Mission Bay, Kohimarama, St Heliers, and Remuera. Brown says Delsey Simpson was not only his pick, but has the support of other councillors.
